• Adrian (1/5): - I wanted to canceled in advance and then booking gave me the option to ask for the whole cancel fee to be not applied. So I did that. They declined and it took them 24 to do so. After that I wasn’t event able anymore to get 50% down which is a normal process and they weren’t helpful.

• Jane (1/5): The place is falling apart, mould everywhere, and bad ventilation. - We didn't eat the food onsite, the only available food was seafood and some of our family don't eat seafood. There were no other options close by to feed the family so we had paid $700 a night to stay at a hotel and had to feed our family from Seven 11 a microwave dinner. Black Mould everywhere. So Bad you couldn't shower in your room. We raised this with the front desk to contact us and they have ignored our messages. We also reported this to Booking.com who have told me that the Hotel is not responding to them.

• Giulia (7/5): beautiful location, fair price, good food - the location of the facility is great, the onsen also and it was not crowded at all, which we appreciated. The food was very good and the portions huge. the room interior and the facility in general were clean. it was a pleasant stay and if the few points i mention later will get improved, i'm sure it will be a perfect stay for the upcoming guests. we understand it probably is hard to keep the big windows clean with all the salty air and rain water, but it would deffinitely make a huge difference in the overall impression of the Ryokan as the panorama is undoubtedly the key point of it. For both the rooms and the sentō side. Also new table cloths in the dining room would be an easy but big upgrade. oh and removed partitions between tables, which obscure the view.

• Verified traveler (4/5): In Disrepair - We got a suite with a private jacuzzi on the balcony - the view was great, but the place is falling apart a bit. The tub was leaking in places and had a slime-y residue inside, and multiple floorboard soft the balcony were rotted through and gave way underfoot. The photos here aren't quite reflective of the property's current state. Even in the public onsen, the windows are covered with salt on the outside, obscuring the view. Beautiful place and the food they serve was good, but some updates are much needed and we felt a bit gipped.
• Steven (8/5): Very good - Excellent view and nice room. Friendly staff. Evening meal was excellent. My wife got may mosquito bites while in the private bath. (14 bites in 20 minutes). Staff were helpful and gave us ice and bite cream - which helped. Breakfast was good but very salty.
• Michelle (9/5): Superb - The ocean view from the room was spectacular as you can see the tombolo in all its phases. The lobby also offers free drinks during certain hours of the day so you can also sit in the lobby and enjoy a cup of coffee while overlooking the ocean. The private bath is reservable on a first-come first-served basis during check-in so you should get there early to reserve your spot. The interior is a bit outdated but the room was clean and comfortable.
• Steven (10/5): Great Sunset View - One of our favorite hotel if you like to experience an outdoor onsen with crashing waves and great sunset sea view. You can reserve an onsen for private use (only once per night stay, unfortunately). We also found the kaiseki means of excellent quality. I understand some guests did complain about the structural integrity and conditions of the building and rooms, especially the molds and the handrails down to the open-air onsen. However, I did not find this an issue during this visit and was very satisfied with the wooden handrails provided. Unless you have major sinus issues, do not miss this hotel if you need a stop at the Dagoshima area. Nothing serious.

• Mizuki (7/5): Great views but needs better maintenance - The view from the hotel is the best I've experienced. All of the rooms have the sea view with the islands so is magnificent. The outdoor onsen is very close to the sea so we loved the view and sound of the crashing waves while sitting in a hot onsen. We went off-season so it was very quiet and got the onsen to ourselves! Breakfast was very traditional and was served per person. The hotel seemed very old and not well maintained. I think because of the age of the hotel, maybe it's harder to clean, so there was mould, rot and cobwebs in a lot of places. If you're looking for a sanitised hotel then maybe this isn't for you, but for the large part it was fine and we didn't mind.

• Vincent (9/5): Amazing views and good food in old fashioned hotel - Amazing views over Dogashima bay, spectacular outdoor onsen, excellent food at diner and breakfast. Staff was very nice as well. As everyone else mentioned, the hotel is slowly falling down. It gives it extra charm and it’s great they maintain very good food service but it could definitely do with a refresher. Pity also the outdoor onsen area got partially closed as this must have been fantastic.

The onsen is also superb, right on the sea. My partner developed really bad itchy spots on the naked/exposed parts of her body in contact with her futon. The doctor confirmed must have been some sort of insect bite. We think the futons were not clean enough. It's a shame because the place is really amazing. Please WASH YOUR FUTONS, because we want to come back.

• Xander (2/5): Extremely Disappointing Stay - Avoid This Hotel - Spectacular Location: The hotel is in a fantastic location with breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Friendly Staff: The staff were polite and tried to be helpful, although they were unable to resolve the major issues we faced. Uncleanliness: The room was not cleaned properly before our arrival, with hair on the bathroom floor, stains on the bed and a dirty sink drain. Dust and debris behind furniture suggested poor housekeeping. Inadequate Repairs: Towels were stuffed above the entrance to our room, indicating makeshift repairs for leaks. There were clear leakage stains in front of the door, which is unacceptable and did not address the underlying issues. The exterior walls were cracked and damaged. Exterior and Structural Issues: The air conditioning unit on the balcony was rusty and deteriorating. The balcony itself felt unsafe due to damaged railings and extremely poor maintenance. Misleading Photos: The pictures on Booking.com do not reflect the current state of the hotel. It feels like the photos are either from a much better time or have been heavily edited. Overall Maintenance: Various maintenance issues, such as peeling wallpaper, old furniture and a rusted door frame, were prevalent throughout the room. Mold and Water Damage: There were visible mold stains on the ceiling and walls of our room and bathroom ceiling. Water damage was evident, indicating leaks that had not been addressed. Neglected Onsen: The onsen area was greatly neglected, with mold on the ceiling and walls. The entire area smelled damp and musty, which made it unpleasant and unhealthy to use. We reported all these issues the morning after our arrival and received apologies, but the promised thorough cleaning was not done. We paid over € 325,00 per night, expecting a high-quality experience that aligns with this price range, but we were deeply disappointed. **Note to Booking.com**: I urge Booking.com to take adequate measures to ensure that the photos and descriptions on their platform accurately represent the current state of the properties listed. Misleading advertising not only affects the trust of customers but also tarnishes the reputation of your platform.
• Melissa (7/5): Great ocean views, onsen, and a littles outdated. - Great ocean views, and the public bath was fully stocked with nice products to use. The staff were exceptional and very helpful. I enjoyed the traditional Japanese room, and decorative hallways. Bus access is convenient, and you are only a 5 min walk to a bus stop that can take you into town or all the way to Shimoda, or Shuzenji. The hotel is kind of outdated, and there were signs of mildew and dampness around the air-conditioning in the hotel room, and public bath. There also was no access to the beach at the hotel, even though it looks like it used to. The outdoor facilities from the pool, to tennis court and one of the outside onsens were condemned, and not abled to be used. There is no restaurant, but I believe you could order dinner but didn't understand how to access it. We were never provided a menu. Access to food is a 7-eleven down the hill from the hotel, or a bus ride into town to access restaurants.

• Elias (1/5): Bad - - First, even though they had rooms available, they didn’t want to let us check in before 3:00 pm. But that’s ok. When we got back to check in, I asked about dinner since the hotel is 15 minutes away from a small town and 30 minutes from a larger town with many restaurants. They told me it was impossible to have dinner at the hotel because we needed to make a reservation at least a day in advance. No one from the hotel contacted me to ask if I wanted dinner, so how was I supposed to know about this requirement? After arguing for a while, the front desk manager didn't try to solve anything, so I gave up and asked about breakfast. To my surprise, we couldn’t have breakfast either, even though I was asking a day in advance. It was the same story again. Then I tried to make a reservation for the onsen for the next morning, but he told me it was impossible because I already had one the day before. Why should I have limited access if I’m paying for it? By the way, the onsen is full of bugs.

• Nazara (3/5): Not good - The views from the room and onsen, the sound of the sea. The room itself was very spacious. The photos on the website do not reflect reality. The place is in poor condition, with broken parts everywhere that haven't been repaired. There's a smell of humidity and years of use in the corridors and elevator. Going to the private onsens is an adventure, recommended only if you're not afraid of strange insects and other sea creatures that might appear, and if you don't mind the abundance of spider webs. The corridor to the private onsens is almost falling apart; don't look up at the ceiling. Even the amazing view from the room was spoiled due to the balcony being completely destroyed with rotten pieces of wood sticking out and the railing broken and rusted. The indoor Onsen walls were black with mould, most of the lockers were broken and the wooden parts were rotten and falling apart. In the hallways there were small counters that we imagine at one point in the past might have functioned like small bars but at the moment they were unmanned and a quick peek behind the counter revealed years of grime and stains around the taps and lower walls. We felt that many of these issues could have been easily addressed, like removing the spider webs in the private onsens or replacing some broken handrails, so we concluded that the hotel doesn't really care. That's why we decided to cancel our last night and go somewhere else. To our surprise, even though we had paid for the night, we were asked to leave at 10:00. I wanted to take a shower and pack my things but didn't have time, even though the night was already paid for! We complained about this but were still asked to leave by 11:00 at the latest. I wonder if they intended to put our room back for rental that same day. By the way, the shower in our room was clogged and the water didn't drain properly. We tried the breakfast, but we weren't surprised that we didn't like it, given the state of the hotel. It feels like no one cares there.

• Yannick (7/5): A nice stay, however onsen and rooms need some work to be refreshed - Umibenokakureyu Seiryu is a nice place, however it is relatively old onsen, I guess excellent 20 years ago and good right now but need to be refreshed.
• Bradley (9/5): high quality establishment, great service and great facilities. - both breakfast and dinner were superb - couldn't be faulted except perhaps too large (what a problem). private onsen were great with the most wonderful views. truly superb.

• David (8/5): As with most reviews, the place is showing its age but the food is good and no real deal breakers. - Very good food and onsen facilities. Attention to detail in room cleanliness and appearance. We had the superior room but the balcony was a mess, general furnishings felt old and looked dirty and the washroom facilities were sub standard. Feels understaffed.

• David (10/5): I am planning on staying with my sister and her husband when they come again in April. - The breakfast was great. Not the usual breakfast at hotels. It was hot for a change. So many hotels in Japan pride themselves on getting the food on the table as soon as they can. Result is that the food is sitting there long before the hotel guests come down to eat it. In other words it is cold. The breakfast was far beyond my expectations and delicious. It was perfect
• Verified traveler (6/5): - Hotel is very old, both room & facility, service is really so so, no clear sign for getting to outdoor onset, need taking many steps down to onsen, not convenient for old people, and no towels provided. Food is also not as expected. Overall not really comfortable stay compare to the price.

• Juliette (8/5): It was a good experience as a ryokan ! - Onsen face to sea was amazing ! Alive food in the dinner, they serve it even we ask not to. Some people of the staff were not nice. It was difficult to find outside onsen and we didn’t receive all information when check in (for example when we did a reservation for onsen we staff didnt explain we have to come to take a key at entrance.
• Thomas (9/5): Excellent view, great value & service - Amazing view of the sea from our room. Very clean rooms and super friendly staff. Each day the staff cleaned our room they left a new snack for us. Nice and quiet. Lots of little sea bugs outside (funamushi), they’re very cute and harmless. The rooms get a bit hot in the afternoon but there was an air conditioner and the staff turned it on for us when they cleaned our room while we were out. Has a strange smell but thats normal for authentic onsens (it’s the minerals in the water and the sea)

This is the only hotel that gave us horrible experience in Japan and the worst one we have encount - The SCENE from this location is beautiful. - Pictures online does NOT REFLECTING the true condition of the hotel - Horrible horrible horrible cleanliness - Mold overall bathroom ceiling, water marks on the wall - Moldy smell as soon as entering the room - Very rundown facility and amenities in the room - Dirty dirty open air bath - Blood stain on the bedding - Bugs on the breakfast plate

• Gabocanci (7/5): Relaxing Ryokan night in Izu Peninsula - Staff provided an amazing service, they were very polite and informative. The breakfast met the expectations, it was nicely set in the morning and we could enjoy it with the sea side view. We slept amazingly well with the sound of the waves realxing, be mindful becase if this bother you shou should not book this place. You can feel is an old ryokan, however we encounter two main issues. The shower head did not work as it was clogged and the water was not coming correctly, the water faucet was loose moving around, I notice some mold as well.
• Verified traveler (10/5): 眺めのいいホテル - フロント、お部屋サービス、お食事、その他諸々スタッフの方々、皆さん感じ良くとても良くして下さいました。 昔からあるホテルなのでしょう、建物は古さはありますが、私達にとっては年季の入った感じがして、決して悪くありませんでした。 然るべき所はきちんと清潔にキレイにできていて不満は全くありませんでした。 お風呂は特に露天風呂は、本当に素晴らしかったです。(夜の露天風呂は晴れていて、最高の夜空の中入れました。ただし、夜なので基本的には海の生物達の活動時間。たくさん出てきますが、私達の方がお邪魔する…という気持ちでないと入れないかもですが(笑)) ロビーからの眺めもですが、全体的に眺めの良いホテルで、堂ヶ島の景色を楽しめました。 お世話になりました。

• Peter (8/5): Seiryu... A MUST Place to stay to enjoy personal onsen with breathtaking view. - Excellent island n sea shore view from both our room and the PRIVATE ONSEN! It's breathtaking and the onsen is ONE OF ITS KIND. You basically overlook the ocean and Dougashima shores.. Excellent view. And it's priced reasonably. Ryoken is a bit old, but it was compensated by excellent services by hotel staff.
