Guest Reviews
- Keith (2/5): - First off, as we pulled in we got a 'Hills have Eyes' vibe of the place as there was no one and no vehicles around. The office door was locked with a notice to call for check in, called and got an automated response that kept saying 'tell me' and then silence. after a couple attempts to talk to it I gave up and we moved on and stayed at The L'Anse Motel, better price, better vibes, human service and much cleaner.
- PAULA (10/5): - When traveling with a dog it's often hard to find a place that approves their admittance, but Bear Paw Inn graciously did and without imposing a ridiculously high fee. The young lady at the desk when we arrived was pleasant, friendly, and very patient with this road-weary traveler who was somewhat confused over whether we'd already been charged (we weren't).
We ended up with a VERY clean, exceptionally comfortable room (2 queen beds) that was rustic yet cozy. I would recommend and certainly would return if ever in that area again!
- Susan (10/5): - This motel is older and the rooms are charming. The sink and toilet are newer. The area is pretty: a big lake is across the road. Despite the motel being on highway 41, it was quiet enough at night that we could leave the windows open. The young woman staffing the motel told us that it is owned by her grandparents. The motel is between Michigamme and L'Anse. We went into L'Anse for breakfast. I recommend filling your water bottle at a restaurant for drinking water as their well water wasn't tasty.
- John (2/5): - This place is a dump. Flies everywhere..
Air conditioning noisy didn’t work windows stuck shut flies everywhere. The places are complete dump.
- Marjorie (8/5): - Cozy rustic area
- Mike (8/5): Clean room. Rustic ambience. - Really enjoyed this place. Great location. What makes it fun is the outdoor area. You can fish off the docks. Take a kayak or canoe out on the lake. Have a campfire. Relax in the hammock. All included..very very cool place. Down the road is Carla's Cozy Inn. Excellent fresh fish. Typical UP friendly atmosphere
- Jaret (10/5): - I'm actually at the Carla's Inn. It's the nicest roadside motel I've ever been to. The owners are very nice people and made room for me when I needed it. If I ever came back to the area I would definetly stay here again.
- David (4/5): - They didn’t even have our reservation. They don’t serve breakfast anymore but sight says they do. Room smells very musty. Can’t turn on heat, it’s not hooked up.
- brandon (8/5): - It's a rustic Motel in the middle of nowhere. If that's what you're looking for it's great. Clean and quiet and close to side by side trails. Property is really cool, right on a lake. Shower is a little tight if you're tall.
- JACOB (10/5): - Very nice setup! Lodge type feel!
- Dennis (6/5): - I loved the place, nice place to stop, had lots to do on the grounds, and pond, had great views of lake Ruth from second floor, great place to eat 4 miles west
- PEGGY (2/5): Unacceptable - Place should be condemned, stunk, rooms are outdated with extension cords running things, smelled like pot cause owners grandson smoked with everyone that checked in then after he came back from the bar rode a motorcycle through the parking lot late at night waking us up,left a day early cause of conditions
- ken (4/5): - Room was fine for the money...the management of this place is troubling...
- Donald (8/5): - Nice hot water.
- tara (10/5): vintage up motel— basic but good - quaint old UP place w/ cedar interiors. reminds me of family’s old up north cabin. nice location.
had to do work calls so wifi was really good. thanks
- Ashlee (8/5): - I wish I would have had more time to hang out at the property because it's gorgeous but it was perfect for a quick night's sleep. The bed was very comfortable. The room smelled a little musty but was clean.
- Danielle (8/5): - Great location. Pet friendly. On the lake. Kayak's/Canoes to use. Places to hangout outside.
Room was good. Beds okay. Bathroom needs a bit of updates but like the funky blue tile. Tip to other travelers, theres no blow dryer and the outlet in bathroom is on the light and its a pull string. Water takes a bit to get hot bit once it does its boiling. Shower is small but doable. Bring your own shampoo and conditioner. They have packets, not good.
Manager laid back. You won't be hassled. Might not be overly friendly but check in was easy.
- Justin (10/5): - It was a nice place to stay. It was peaceful.
- Bruce (10/5): - The view was outstanding and the staff was very helpful
- Dallas (2/5): - Smell of room was musty couldn't get rid of smell left a day early not happy couldn't talk to no one didn't see anyone pay for 3days stayed 2 was enough id like my 93 dollars back
- Karen (10/5): Sufficient for road trips - Arrived after office hours but they had printed out my receipt and put it and our room key in an envelope taped to the office door. Thank you! Property had horseshoes, corn hole, chaise loungers for use. It's an old property still in the 60's. But we were there to sleep not get fashion tips.
- Gary (8/5): - Wonderful outdoor activity area featuring: horse shoes, corn hole, kayaking and fishing
- Joe (10/5): - Very Peaceful
- Mark (8/5): - A very good value happy with our stay
- Patrick (8/5): - Very convenient for lake access
- Jennifer (8/5): - This was a cute little off the road place but the rustic cuteness that we like for the UP of Michigan. Other than a small leak, where there was a spot of wet carpet, the bed was comfortable. The TV was good and a clean shower was all we needed. Price was fair as well.
- Mark (6/5): A mixed bag - 100% honest review here. Office as you walked in, wreaked of marijuana. The young gentlemen appeared to be high. The room at the motel however surprised us, it had knotty pine wood all over and it was extremely clean. It honestly belies the appearance of the outside of the motel. When I drove up, I thought oh, oh, and was a bit worried about the room but it turned out ok. The garbage cans at each end however were filled with trash, couldn't even fit ours in so we left it on top of the garbage cans and this was on Monday morning. So the rooms were nice, but the rest didn't do much for them. A little care to the outside, including lawn cutting would do them wonders.
- Melisa (6/5): - This property is conveniently located. The check in process was nice and it was a quiet place to settle. The outside area had a nice ambiance with a fire pit, docks, kayaks to use and a place to sit near the water. The beds were comfortable and the room was cozy. There was a mildew/mold smell in the room that was helped by turning the air conditioner on.
- Angela (8/5): - I love all of the activities available at the property
- Terrell (8/5): - Nice attractions.. will be back
- David (4/5): Wow Bear Paw inn - I generally never complain, i have to say there was confusion from the start... disconnected phone number, sounded like my room was in the town of Baraga and not Michigamme, all i wanted was to sleep and shower no more no less. I slept for 5 solid hours and awoke to the owner outside our door tslking about us. Decided i wanted to go to the bathroom and the seat was so loose it was almost a rodeo . Opted for a shower and ran the rotten egg smelling water for ten minutes and it never got warm and ran faucet at same time and no hot water hmmmmm. Thanks so much and who is the red hot chili pepper looking people riplin around in the gravel ??? Thanks for the experience.
- Robert (4/5): - I believe they are trying to make it nice. There are yard games available, a rowboat, and chairs by the water. At first glance the room looked Ok. But the bed did not have a top sheet, there was a missing light bulb, the power did not work in the outlet we wanted for charging our devices, and the password for the internet did not work. All easy to correct.
- mary (2/5): Only stay at this dump as a last resort - Room was not clean. Neither the WiFi nor TV worked. There was mold in the coffee pot. The room was moldy smelling. Rust in the bathroom which had a single pull chain light.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Quaint and comfy - Rm was what to expect from a small independent hotel. It was dated but clean and comfortable as any motel Could use more electric plugs. Don’t know how to travel without our electronics!
- Elizabeth (4/5): - Toilet didn’t work! And it smelled and was stained. No hot water. Internet password listed didn’t work. No one on the property to complain to.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Tired accommodations - Room was old, had a musty/moldy smell, will not stay again.
- Tina (10/5): - Awesome...never bothered lots of boats to take out for free...nice grill...fire pit...and games 😀
- suresh (2/5): - Worest experience
- Jing (6/5): - The drive way and parking lot is gravel road, it was very muddy when we arrived, mud were all over my shoes and luggage.
- Piyaporn (6/5): - Nice place, visited late in the season so it was quiet.
- Alex (4/5): - No staff available for check-in or check-out!!
- Raymond (6/5): - Could be much better with a little more work
- Tom (2/5): - Not like it pictures. Lobby so Smokey, internet couldn’t connect and credit card machine wasn’t working. Very dissatisfied. We didn’t stay. We went to another motel
- Sherry (2/5): - This property was just plain odd. Got there and the desk clerk handed us breakfast for the next day - 2 packages of powdered sugar donuts and a couple cans of juice. The room was very small, the wifi was worthless, and the satellite TV kept stopping and starting. There were cords and power strips with too many things plugged in. The toilet made a horrific noise after it flushed. I went to make coffee in the in room pot, and there was a used packet of coffee left in it. There was a baggie with some sugar packets, but no creamer or anything to stir with. The property is old and run down, but the little things that could have made it better weren't done. No hair dryer. The bed was okay, and the refrigerator and microwave were good. The outside area was pleasant and had plenty of room for pets to be walked and there were chairs to sit in, a fire pit, hammock and a corn hole game. However, the location is right off the highway, so it was noisy. I would not recommend this place unless you're desperate and have no other choice.
- Robert (10/5): - We enjoyed our three night stay here. The room was clean. We did some fishing off the dock. It was nice to have a fire pit to use. The front desk was friendly. They have a grill, horseshoes, and some other amenities. We ate at the bar/restaurant a couple times. Its just down the road. Played some Keno. I would stay here again when in the area.
- Craig (10/5): - Close to family
- Laura (6/5): - Our room had clean towels and sheets, but it smelled like a smoking room, we did not get any service between our two days, and no one was in the office the two times I approached it. It had a cute lamp and bedspread. The fridge froze our vegetables. Very expensive for what you got.
- Grant (4/5): - Needs updating.
- Janet (4/5): Clean for the mosquitoes - We were eaten alive by mosquitoes. Must have gotten 30 of them. If I'd wanted that, I'd camp.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Horrible establishment - It was so disgusting I couldn’t even stay. The ad and pictures are very deceiving. The young man working the desk was a jerk and the lady that is responsible for cleaning was as well. I would NOT recommend anyone to waste their time or money. Called owner, Doug, he said he would refund the charges, still waiting on that. Did dispute the claim with my card though.
- Paul (10/5): - Very nice, clean room.
- Maurine (2/5): - Place was like a fire hazard. Not sure of heat. Had an odor about it. Unacceptable. We left the key an the table and left. No point talking to the girl at the desk. (I hope she doesn't fall through that floor in the office.)
- Amy (8/5): - Cozy
- Gwen (2/5): - This property was the most uncleanly place I have ever stayed. There were dead flies everywhere, dust & stained sheets. I would not recommend staying here to my worst enemy. Checking in should have told me to run.. the man came out after waiting 5 minutes and ringing the bell without a shirt on & smelling for weed. Incredibly rude. Do not stay here!
- Karen (2/5): Do not stay at the Bear Paw Inn - I’m clean room. Lots of flies. Drippy shower, after the room finally warmed up, could cool it down. Pinched my butt on the broken toilet seat. I would not ever recommend this motel to anyone. The only nice thing was the view. But the windows were all dirty. And the young girl that worked there. She had a wonderful personality and listened to our concerns. She should be in charge of that motel and restaurant. Things would change.
- Hershell (10/5): - We totally enjoyed our stay at the Bear Paw Inn. Our room was clean and comfortable. The staff was friendly. There’s kayaks and fishing available on the property. You can have a campfire or use their grill to cook out. Nice place to get the up north experience, if you don’t have your own cabin on a lake. We will come back again.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - We arrived to check-in, a mistake on their part from earlier in the day made it look like we had already checked in & another guests paperwork was stapled to mine. The office smelled of marijuana so strong. Supposed to have a room with 1 queen bed but got a room with 2 full beds. It smelled like wet dog & musty/mildew. The bedding was damp from the moisture in the room. The AC didn't work & was caked with dust. The carpet was stained & obvious it had been like that for awhile. The beds are old & hard, felt like sleeping on a piece of plywood. Pillows were paper thin. The shower was so small you barely had enough room to turn around & there were a few spots of mold in the bathroom & the screened entry door. Being part of the hospitality industry there's no way I'd ever let a guest stay in these conditions.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not what we expected - If I have a bad experience I usually just let it go. I can’t on this. First on check in Jeremy at the front desk couldn’t find our reservation. He said he could provide a room and charged us about $30 more than the price on Hotels.com. The room was clean but we couldn’t get the TV to work correctly. There aren’t phones in the rooms so I had to call the hotel using my cell phone. I got an answer machine and left a message. Jeremy came up and attempted to get it straight. Without checking if he actually fixed it he just handed the remote back to us, gave a nod and left. Great except he didn’t fix it. It wasn’t worth trying to get him to come back. Our Wi-Fi signal was good so we watched Netflix on my laptop. We’d never stay there again.
- Elias (4/5): - Recommend looking elsewhere, poorly ran, outdated motel
- Paul (10/5): Great place to stay for a great price - Awesome place to stay more then one night you can go fishing on the property kayaking and just about thirty minutes to the casino in barega hour drive Houghton I saved just under two hundred dollars staying at bear paw inn the staff are fantastic why pay more when can get more for less near paw gold mine to stay at
- Peter (4/5): - Such great potentional but sadly the effort was not there. Outside - a little paint, clean the bugs out of the light fixtures, sweep the bugs and webs away for room doors.
Bathroom floor stepping out of the shower was very soft - expect it was rotting underneath.
Overall the rooms were clean though.
The lone staff that we dealt with spent his off time speeding around the dirt parking lot in a 4 wheel buggy spraying up loads of dirt and dust and coming very close to our vehicle. Not impressed.
- Bryan (6/5): - Clean rooms, beaver swimming next to the property and an eagle over head.
- Joel (6/5): - The interior and cleanliness was nice. I did not particularly like how the hot water wasn't consistent as it cooled significantly during a shower. For the rate I was charged per night it was not satisfactory.
- Karl (4/5): - No hot water. Window air conditioner was not sealed properly so there were many mosquitos that got in during the night. Smelled musty and damp.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The young man who managed the property was great. He was very friendly and helpful. The room was full of mosquitos. We couldn't find how or where they were getting in.
- Jill (2/5): - Marijuana was recently smoked in the inn office.
- Melissa (8/5): not bad little place - Cozy liitle motel very quaint a million miles from no where . Clean and great staff My son hated that the lady bugs were everywhere
- Jim (10/5): - Great value for price. Quiet and comfortable. Exceeded expectations.
- Thomas (4/5): - Room was full of flies. Next door had a large dog that barked a lot, and when people left at about 12:30, they stomped out and started up a loud car.
- Peter (2/5): - Great location and that was about it. Some random dude kinda working front desk, room had at least 40 flys, smelled bad, could be a nice place with very little work, but doesn’t seem like they care to do it
- Leigh (2/5): -
- Krista (2/5): - This was the worst place I have EVER stayed at. The check in office smelled like cat pee, there were dogs locked up in the back yard that barked a lot. Cigarette butts and garbage all over the parking lot. When I pulled the sheets backs to go to bed there was sand all over the sheets, I don’t believe that were ever changed. The windows did not shut completely so there was NO feeling of security. The people that live in the upstairs were blasting music and singing loader then the music, I believe they were the staff of the hotel. I would not recommend staying there.
- RAYMOND (2/5): - Check in was a little difficult. Had to track someone down to check in and was disturbed that everybody’s credit card info was just laying on the front desk in the open and accessible to anyone. Room was ok for cleanliness but air conditioner was taken out and no screens on the windows to get air without the bugs. The water in the shower smelled something awful which stunk up the room a bit. 2 guard dogs barked at any movement which gets old after a while. The place served its purpose for me since I was gone all day and just needed a place to sleep. A lot of disruptions with moving furniture and banging in other rooms. A lot of improvements need to be done before I would ever stay here again. Cute name though.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The first night people upstairs kept me awake stomping atound up stairs. 2nd night - its steam heat eith no way to turn it down or up.
- Jenna (2/5): - The man working the front desk was extremely unprofessional - checked me in while smoking a joint and almost immediately started hitting flirting. Came back after dinner and this same man (also residing on the property) was screaming profanities and slamming stuff around in his room. The bedding was stained and appears to have bugs in between the sheets. When attempts were made to contact someone on the property (office was closed and locked) several of the phone numbers were disconnected and no one answered. The lady working the front desk shortly after and was beyond rude to me when turning in my key. Absolutely did not feel safe here - packed my stuff and LEFT.
- Dayleen (2/5): - Layout was nice. No hot water, two young people running it that were incompetent . Not enough outlets, Tv didn't work properly...3 phone calls about confirmation...then when got there...told is that they made a mistake...then changed there mind again and said we had a room.
- Kimberly (4/5): - Room not very clean. Coffee pot with left over coffee yuck. Never seen anyone that worked there. Not worth what i paid. Not by far. I spent the first half hour killing flies. I would have left but they had already charged me before i even showed up. And like i said i never seen anyone. My key and recipient was pinned to a board by the office.
- Donna (2/5): Wet and soggy. - It was in poor condition. Theyhaven't been keeping it up. The carpet was soaking wet From water coming in around the air conditioner. Window leaked dripped all night long.
- Brad (8/5): - Nice location, nice decor, nice outdoor area
- Belinda (10/5): charming out of doors area - Very attractive grounds. Proprietor easily available when needed.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I actually stayed at Carla's Inn in Baraga -- another property from the same owners. The location on the shore of Lake Superior is incredible! The fact that the motel is in Baraga -- kind of isolated and quiet and away from crowds -- is an added bonus. Carla was really kind and helped me check in late by clearly communicating the check in process with me. The room was comfortable and quiet. I look forward to returning here and enjoying the lakeshore.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Location between several lakes makes it very peaceful. Great place for stopover while travelling thru the U.P. Not much sound protection between our room and the stairs so it was noisy when people used them.
- Richard (8/5): We had a lot of fun here - An old and ramshackle motel, with the charms and lack of some modern conveniences (very slow wi-fi, no internet media) associated with such, this was, nonetheless, a very enjoyable place to stay. The surrounding lakes are beautiful, canoes are available to all, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. More like a home than a hotel in some ways, don't expect ultra pristine corporate-style accommodation, but do expect a solidly satisfying and very good value visit.
- Patricia (10/5): - Excellent Place. Clean, kayak, canoeing, pontoon, yard games
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Comfortable bed. Convenient parking. Charming country location with areas to enjoy the outdoors. Wi-fi was less than ideal, but it is very patchy in that area generally. A nice place to get away from it all!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice people. Bonfire in evening
- Verified traveler (4/5): - This place was really old. The guy upstairs just walking around kept us awake. There was a constant dripping we couldn't figure out where it was coming from. NO HAIRDRYER!! And no one would answer the door at the office when we went to ask if they had one. I can't believe we had to pay the going rate for this room!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Well when we got here the key was pinned to the door with a note, and it was only 730 pm. Our neighbor Jeremy was a big help to us. The second day here we pulled into the lot and the managers boyfriend was physically fighting with Jeremy and his girlfriend. From what I gathered and witnessed the boyfriend I think his name was Dakota was out of control and didn’t seem to care that we drove up, it was very concerning to my friend and I. We sat by our room and still witnessed Dacota being belligerent. I think it was rude and totally unprofessional for us to have to witness such a sight.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice place - We arrived later in the evening and the office was closed, they had our room key a s a note attached to the door which was very convenient for us. Our room was very clean and the decor is adorable! There is a fire pit outside along with some yard games, and the sunset was beautiful as you can see it right from the hotel. Unfortunately, we had a group of young kids in the room above us, so we didnt get much sleep walls are pretty thin. But overall great place to stay
- Verified traveler (2/5): - When I arrived to check in, there was loud music blaring from the room behind the lobby and no one to greet me. There was a note on the desk to press button if no one was available, but there was no button to push. As I was trying to figure out how to get help with checking in, three people walked out from the back, all very surprised to see me. They only came out into the lobby because they were about to head to the store, not because they had a customer to help.
The woman who helped with check-in was having issues getting the credit card machine to work and used quite a bit of profanity due to her frustration. Meanwhile her two friends stood in the lobby waiting for her. One of them was a very drunk younger man who was stumbling around on crutches and kept talking to me. At one point their dogs got into the lobby and the drunk man stumbled around on his crutches yelling at them trying to get them back in to the house and other woman tried to help him...all the while the loud music continued to blare from the other room.
The issue with the credit card machine required someone to come from over an hour a way to fix it, but it did get fixed so I was able to come back and pay a bit later, but the entire time I was waiting initially was a very unprofessional and unpleasant experience.
While the rooms are clean and comfortable, they need to address the issues at check in. I have stayed here previously and expected a better experience this time. Not sure I'd stay again
- Darlene (2/5): - It is a bad place to stay unless you want mice in your room, leaky toilet, cabinet falling down, waiting long time for hot water, no fuel to cook on grill, office stinking like urine from cat or dog possibly both, no room if you don't hold room with credit card. No help from staff if they don't want to deal with you & will hang up plus not answer door. I would never ever stay here again nor recommend anyone else to stay here either. It is not worth it. I also had to deal with not being able to see by where you lite a campfire & dog crap all over
- Verified traveler (4/5): Remodel office and get ride of flies. - The review about cat urine in the office was correct. The cat wanted to rub on me and I am uncomfortably allergic to cats. I wanted to leave the office as soon as possible, but needed to wait to find out what room we were assigned.
- Donald (4/5): Don't expect much - At registration it was unwelcoming and the office was disgusting once you got the lady to come out from behind the curtain. She was intent on proving to me she didn't have an online reservation. Which I had printed and was holding in my hand because I made it 2 weeks ago. When we got to the room there were hot dogs in the fridge, I had to wash out the microwave so we could heat up some soup it had cheese melted in it, we killed at least 20 flies that were buzzing around the room, and bring your own shampoo because they give you little packets that are hard to tear open in the shower. I would not recommend this place if you're looking for a clean place.
It is kind of cute and has good potential, at least they provide a fly swatter.
