- myke (10/5): Living in Auntie's place - Its a simple well appointed older japanese home and very well located. The shower room is a bit chilly but we were there in February.
- Hoang Minh (9/5): Good experience - Never tried a machiya, so this time (my 2nd time in Kyoto), I decided to try one. The place is nice, about 20 mins walking from Sanjusangendo, which was a main destination of this trip. The house was in a good shape and clean. Everything we needed was there. We cooked breakfast and did the washing at ease. Heating worked well, no problem sleeping through winter nights. A little pity there were no tree in the tsuboniwa. I understand they cannot maintain a garden without rising cost. The main problem was that the toilet and bath room were both in the back of the house. And the lobby leading there were OPEN. Both toilet and bath were modern, but the walls were so thin I had to wear my woolen hat when p**ping. The hot bath felt great, stepping out of it was another thing. But I guess it is expected at a machiya. Should be way better if it was in summer. So I still think I will recommend this place to friends.
- Marc (10/5): Maison japonaise typique à bon prix.

- Giovanni (8/5): - Esperienza carina all'interno di una casa tipica. Posizione un po decentrata.
- Pedro (6/5): - Tatami room experienced was nice. The bathroom and toilet has difficult access, and probably needs a pest control.
- Marina (9/5): -
- Jorge (10/5): - Nice Tipical house
We enjoy our stay very much
Clean, well mantained
Highly recomended
- Per-axel (10/5): A very warm welcome from two staff, good communication with the host before, during and after our stay in this lovely pr - Its genuinely traditional style and relaxing spaciousness
- Harith (10/5): Exceptional -
- Darren (10/5): - Great decor and art work inside the Kumano House
- Toshio (10/5): - 今回は、ありがとうございました。
レスポンスも早く、説明も丁寧で安心して宿泊できました。
- Howard (10/5): Exceptional - It's a traditional style Japanese house. Beautifully upkept. It is conveniently located in Tofukuji which places you a station or two from Fushimi-Inari, Kiyomizu-Dera, Toufukuji temple, and also 1 station away from Kyoto Station. It would be a 30 minute walk if you wanted to do that which is relatively easy. I loved this house. It's full of charm and character. This is an old house, so don't expect the Hilton.
- Maria (8/5): Wonderful experience in this traditional Japanese house! - A well maintained traditional Japanese house with tatami flooring. The house had all the comforts - a well stocked kitchen; comfortable beds (including the ones on the floor!); lots of space for everyone (2 adults and 2 kids). We loved the experience and the house! The biggest detractor was the bathroom situation. Although the toilet was heated and very comfortable, the area of the house for the toilet and the separate shower were off the back in an unconditioned part of the house. Unfortunately we were there when temperatures were hovering around 0 (freezing), so showering wasn’t so comfortable.
- Nicolas (3/5): Would not recommend :( - The owner seemed nice
The bedroom upstairs was spacious and clean and well done The house was very dark and very cold, with poor soundproofing from the outside, even though the street is quiet.
The bathroom and toilet are outside of the house proper.
In some spots (in front of the bathroom floor or the garden or the tatami room downstairs) I felt like my foot was going to go through the floor.
The area with the mirror and the sink was dirty. Some spots in the tatami room downstairs and elsewhere in the house looked dirty and unfinished.
The stairs are very steep.
Nothing really going on in the neighborhood, we had to walk quite a way just for a convenience store, and not much else to see either. Some of the close neighborhood was dirty, with trash around (only time I saw that in Japan), not well maintained at all, ugly buildings, and we met a lot of people who were obviously struggling quite a lot, including old people. It was a shock to us.
Maybe fine for one or two nights, but no more, and definitely not for older people or people looking for real comfort.
I do feel bad for leaving such a low review score, maybe we were unlucky, maybe we were expecting too much, maybe I should've known better, but at the end of the day we only stayed one night out of our 13 planned nights and the whole thing felt pretty depressing. The photos are still accurate, but at the same time some of the issues with the house cannot be seen on photos, and even then some of the more dirty areas aren't shown either. So the photos aren't really misleading per say, but it still wasn't at all what we expected to find from looking at them initially.
- Romilly (9/5): A great quiet city spot. - Lovely little cosy home that felt very traditional. The location is in a nice quiet area, and good access to areas we wanted to see.
- Ashley (8/5): We were happy with our selection of Kumano House, it suited our needs well. - It presents as more of a traditional Japanese place to stay which was nice. Separate bedrooms suits a small family well. Fairly close to a train station and bus stop. The tiolet was on the ground floor and the bedrooms were upstairs, stairs were steep. The property perhaps is not as suitable for older people.
Toilet and bathroom are out the back and cold in winter. Bath was small but fun for a short stay.
All the doors had low head heights so there was a lot of ducking between rooms and knocking of heads for the taller members of our party.
- Munzir (10/5): Exceptional - Everything! None
- Mae (9/5): Superb -
- Jimmy (6/5): Very convenient location and good amenities for the price. - The cleaning lady was very nice and the space was well set-up, with multiple rooms. The code that was given to us to unlock the box with the keys was incorrect and the shower’s temperature and pressure were inconsistent.
- Darren (4/5): Tired home with poor beds - The house is run down
Doors don’t close and the floor feels like in some areas it’s about to collapse
- Volk (8/5): We really enjoyed our stay as we were looking for that authentic Japanese feel. Yet, you had all the modern comfort as w - Communication with the host was excellent and instructions shared beforehand. As advertised, the house was very traditional throughout in a very quiet und cute neighbourhood in Kyoto. As mentioned by others the stairs to the bedrooms are very steep und narrow. So are probably not ideal for mobility impaired guests or with very young kids.
- Terra (5/5): It was ok - It was in a quiet suburb close to temples. It has separate bedrooms so we didn’t have to go to sleep when the children did. It also had a kitchen and laundry facilities. The floors and sliding doors were very creaky, making it very noisy to move around. The toilet was downstairs and far from bedrooms making for a long and noise trek to the toilet in the night. The house was in need of a deep clean with the kitchen a bit grotty. The back area where toilet and bath were located were a bit smelling of damp and sewage. The bath was not comfortable for larger people. Would not recommend house for anyone with small children or elderly people or those with mobility issues as stairs are very steep. It’s fine if you don’t mind a rustic cottage vibe. Lots of electrical outlets looked overdue for a safety check.
- Vasil (9/5): Superb -
- Laura (10/5): We absolutely loved the authentic Japanese style and atmosphere of the home. We also really appreacited our host, Danie - The authentic Japanese style of the home was a hit with my family. It felt like we were staying in a genuine Japanese home. It was also very spacious, with enough room for a family of five. The stairs were very narrow and very steep. My feet could barely fit on each step. This wasn’t a problem for our young family, but it could be a problem for an older person.
- Rikesh (8/5): Very good -
- Juan Jose (10/5): - Nice and quiet house. Very clean and traditional looking.
- Ariel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Albone (7/5): Very enjoyable stay in Kyoto, visiting temples, shops, the Nara deer and discovering super pizza at Salu Tori - Traditional Japanese style in a neighbourhood with small alleys on a hill. We liked the tatami rooms. Creaky beds, bathroom needs renovation, low doorways, but partly expected in a traditional Japanese home.
- Oleksandra (10/5): It was a nice experience in a Japanese styled house. Very recommended! - It is possible to leave your bags from 11.00h.
- Merari (8/5): The house is quiet and well mantained. Good kitchen amenities - The place is so charming with all the Japanese decor and it is bigger than i could expect For the taxi driver was always dificult to find the correct adres of the house
- Leighton (10/5): Night at the museum - Authentic Kyoto house that felt historic. Personal introduction on arrival was nice. I had a payment issue and he was very accommodative in helping me sort it out. As stated in other reviews the toilet and shower are on the bottom floor and are exposed to open air between the house and the facilities (like a metre or two).
- Earl (10/5): - The owner is kind, courteous, and amazing. The area around the property is absolutely beautiful from the people to the scenery, the grocery store is really close by and everyone is so friendly. The house is beautiful and everything from the decor to the amenities were very easy to use.
- Kaja (10/5): All in all a great experience, a warm welcome to a very clean and cosy hostel. Would definitely recc -
- Belinda (10/5): - Accommodation was lovely - felt like a Japanese home. Beds were comfortable. Plenty of pots and pans to cook meals in the kitchen. Host was very helpful and friendly and responded quickly to any questions. Highly recommend.
- Tomomi (9/5): Superb - We could find everything what we needed, and it was a great experience to stay in a traditional Kyoto house. Good location and a wonderful host. Once you find the location of the house and the parking, you’d realize you’re lucky to have found this place.
- Omar (8/5): Very good - Handy location and great to stay in a Japanese home as opposed to a hotel or tourist apartment. Daniel, the property manager, is awesome - super helpful. Steep stairs up to the bedrooms could be challenging if you have mobility issues. The toilet and shower are out the back - not a big deal but a little inconvenient at times.
- Mario (10/5): Exceptional - It felt like sleeping in a museum. Very traditionell but speacas. Everything was spottless clean. Very well equipet. Everything was perfect.
- Lee (9/5): quiet location and good sleep - nice staff and clean
- Tommaso (9/5): Superb - The charm of old traditional Japanese house, Japanese style room, furnitures and living room. Location is also good. The only drawback was the toilet located in a garden which is actually outside the house and so was a bit hot and wet, but it wasn’t a big problem
- Max (10/5): Exceptional -
