Guest Reviews
- Nihal (8/5): Excellent views in the heart of Haputale - Nice, spacious, and clean room with a large bathroom and breathtaking views from the garden.
Close to the city centre and in a good location.
Nice breakfast and good service from the owners. We had issues with the hot water, and loud music was being played outside by workers carrying out extension work.
I’m not sure whether the new extension building has been constructed to proper standards, as the surrounding beams do not seem very stable.
- Ankita (10/5): - The owner of the homestay is such a genuine guy, he tried his hardest to help us out our entire stay. He helped connect us to a lovely tuktuk driver who did everything at an amazing price and told us so many amazing facts along the way. The food and family style eating was also so lovely. The view from our breakfast spot outside the garden was also amazing. Due to the current construction at the minute the property did not have WiFi. This thankfully didn’t affect us as we had data on our phone but for travellers who need WiFi this might make it harder!
- Judy (8/5): - Lecker Frühstück. Gute Lage. Ein tolles altes Haus. Freundliche Gastgeber.
- Megumi (8/5): -
- Oleguer (9/5): - Familia super maja.

- Louis (10/5): Nice stay, i recommend - Nice stay in belview, interesting English house, good breakfast and hot shower
- Clair (10/5): Good luck with the projects! I look forward to seeing photos. - Lovely family, great food, well looked after and much appreciated! Many thanks for having us to stay
- James (9/5): - Mohamed is a really nice host, the room is big, the view is great, and the place is only 15min walk from the center. I don't know if you can find better in Haputale for this price
- Evelyne P. (8/5): A welcoming family quite close to the city of Haputale. - The family sent us a tuck tuck to pick us up in town ( they didn't charge us).
They gave us a warm welcome.
The room was large and the meal and breakfast were pleasant.
The view when not misty. It was a bit old but I guess that's what to expect from an ancient colonial house.
Hot water wasn't very hot.
But nothing too bad.
Good luck for the future.
- Ruth (1/5): The owner stole my money - avoid this place at all costs! - I usually read reviews carefully before booking accommodation, but at the time of booking, the option to view all reviews wasn’t available on my phone. If I had seen them, I would absolutely not have stayed here.
I have very serious concerns about this property regarding money being stolen from guests. After we left the guest house, I realised some cash was missing, including a few 5,000 LKR notes. I only noticed this after we had left Haputale and arrived at our next destination. Based on my calculations, the money could only have gone missing during our stay at Bel View, but at the time, I didn’t believe the owner and his family would steal from guests and assumed I had miscalculated or overspent.
After later reading the reviews on Booking.com and google, I was shocked to see multiple reports over several years describing money being stolen. Many guests reported the owner going through belongings while they were eating in the dining room. I believe this is what happened to me. Our room was very close to the dining area, and we left the door unlocked while eating, assuming it would be safe in a family-run guest house. Other guests have described the same situation - leaving the room unlocked during meals and later finding money missing.
A week after our stay, the owner contacted me claiming he had “found” my money “under the floor” after cleaning our room. This is not true, as I had kept my money safely in a pouch and had thoroughly checked the room before leaving. It seems this explanation was offered to avoid being suspected of taking the money. He also claimed he had tried to contact me multiple times, although we never received any calls on the sri lankan number we provided. Other reviews describe a similar pattern of the owner suddenly “finding” money after guests realised it was missing.
I have reported this to Booking.com and the police. I hope the police investigate this fully, as this appears to be a repeated pattern affecting many guests. Aside from my money being stolen, we experienced several other issues. The family’s young child was very noisy, especially in the evenings and at night, making it difficult to have a peaceful stay. During one breakfast, the child was under the table being disruptive while we were eating, making loud noises, and the owner, who was present, did not intervene. There was no hot water, which was particularly unpleasant in cold mornings and evenings, and on one day there was no water at all, so we couldn’t shower. Laundry service was provided, but some clothes were not washed properly and had a bad smell. Some of the food served was disappointing, particularly one breakfast that consisted of just three sugary pancakes; a choice of breakfast would have been appreciated, for guests who don't like to eat sugary foods.
Overall, this was a very disappointing experience and left me feeling deceived. We did not expect anything like this from a family-run guest house. If you choose to stay here, be very careful with valuables. Honestly though, I would recommend not staying here at all - it is not worth the trouble.

- Veronika (8/5): -
- alegarciavaz (10/5): - Great place and best people
- Pol (7/5): - Habitación grande y cómoda. Baño privado grande. Vistas bonitas. No agua caliente.
- Peter (10/5): Amazing view and lovely owner - The owner Mohammed was such a.nice person and waned to help in any way possible. Rooms were big and bed and pillows comfy. Water pressure was not great but at least it was hot. We had curry and rice from his wife and the chicken curry was one of the nicest I've had. And I've had plenty. But the biggest selling point is the amazing view.and it is stunning. Theres a number of new rooms being built and some will have that spectacular view from their room.
- Candice (10/5): -
- Doreen (9/5): - Really nice guesthouse in Haputale in a quiet location. The host family were lovely and we enjoyed our stay there. Recommended.
- Chamara (5/5): -
- Ihalavithana (1/5): - ★☆☆☆☆ – Terrible experience
The room was dirty and poorly maintained. Bedsheets had not been washed — old hair still on them. Stains on the pillows, dust everywhere, and the whole room had a bad smell. The bathroom smelled awful too, making it hard to even use comfortably.
Definitely not worth the price. Would never stay here again or recommend to anyone.
- Portia (7/5): Convenient location for starting a leg of the Pekoe Trail. Great views from the garden. - A house with plenty of history, an old tea plantation house with the original concreate bath ! They are planning 10 new rooms so it was a building site really. Unfortunately WiFi was broken.
- Stewart (10/5): excellent - Breakfast was great, staff went above and beyond nothing
- Carsten (8/5): Very good - Somewhat dated but cozy room with a nice bathroom. Unfortunately it was quite foggy, otherwise it must be a great view from the terrace. Small breakfast was included. The host was friendly and helpful without being intrusive. I used my own lock. The city center and train station are a 10-15 minute walk away.
- Jonathan (9/5): Superb -
- Sarah (1/5): Not worth it, get the good views and lovely Sri Lankan people anywhere else - DON’T STAY IN THIS PLACE!! Many THEFTS reported including myself.
For breakfast we were asked to come eat inside their house (even though there’s a lovely view with tables and different seats just outside the room). When we came back to the room, since we were checking out, we grab our bags and left. We notice money missing from our wallet just around 30 minutes later around 30.000Rs. I booked through booking.com just to after check their Google reviews, there’s a a few of them mentioning previous thefts. I contacted the owner since I had seen the other reviews and he said he “found our money” on the bed as ask us not to contact the police, similar to the other reviews I had seen, they seem to take your money while you’re eating breakfast. Before we check out from accomodation I always, including this one, check all places in the room INCLUDING bed sheets. We reported to police and thankfully they helped us. I hope no one else has to “forget their money” on this place. Save yourself from trouble, we love the people in Sri Lanka and won’t let this experience ruin it for us.
- Ron (1/5): Don’t do it - Nothing I can’t say anything good about this property, so I will leave it there.
- János (8/5): Very good - The entrance is on the main road, but the room is in the backyard, so it’s really calm. It was a simple, economy room for a budget price. The dinner and the breakfast was delicious.
- Leo (9/5): Peaceful views - The guest house is in an old colonial building, once owned by a tea plantation owner and Mohamed’s family have been living there for the past 60 years.
Some of the rooms are in an extension to the property and have superb views over the hills and down to the plains, really love to bird watch and see the clouds creeping up the mountain side. The other rooms are more grand and inside the original building.
Mohammed and his family are very friendly and welcoming, they helped us organise a Tuktuk to go on a long hike through tea plantations. The walk from st Catherine’s back to Haputale is easy to follow and very beautiful (8 miles).
The room was small but had lots of character and had a mosquito net and blankets. We liked it a lot and extended our stay, Haptuale is a wonderful little town. Nothing really. We originally thought it was right next to the train station but you can’t walk over the tracks, so it takes about 10-15 minutes to walk around from the train station/there’s lots of Tuktuks.
- Vlada (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rozaliya (9/5): Superb - Spacious rooms with hot water shower, amazing view, good location, good value for money. The owner helped me to get a Tuk-Tuk to Horton Plains National Park for a reasonable price. The driver was amazing, a very nice and professional man. The owner also helped me with my next destination and told me which buses I needed to take and where to change buses, super useful information, and made my journey super easy. Thank you! All is good!
- Marie-claude (8/5): Very good - Good price for a private room with a hot shower and breakfast. Close to the Pekoe trail for those hiking it. Nice view on the garden.
- Tomas (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice family, super friendly host who offered a dinner and a breakfast, very good location and fantastic view.
- Barbara (8/5): Clean room in colonial building with stunning views from the garden. - Beautiful old colonial building, full of character. Huge room and very clean. Stunning view from the outdoor seating area. Quiet location but only 5 minute walk to the town and bus station. Comfortable bed and pillows. Nice Sri Lankan breakfast. Hot water shower. Nothing. All good
- Lauren (8/5): Very good -
- Pascal (10/5): Accueillant et très bien situé - The bel view is comfortable if you take the most expensive rooms. Mohamed is very welcoming. The weather was pouring rain and we asked if we could prepare a meal in the family kitchen, which he accepted with his big smile. The bel View is 7 minutes from the train station and the center. Compared to Ella, everything is much cheaper (fare, meals...). The Pekoe Trail passes through Haputale, which allows you to make excursions on both sides. If you go down to the south coast, regular buses to Wellawaya (1 hour 30 of pretty road) then change buses (direct bus to Tissa number 99.6 - duration: 3 hours). Direction Ella: train or bus, duration 1 hour. Rien
- Alegarciavaz (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice place and staff, i will back sure
- Nathalie (10/5): A wonderful time ! - Super friendly and welcoming, Mohamed and his wife make you feel comfortable and at home. Special note for the mattress, brand new and so comfy ! Breakfasts are excellent and new everyday and the view is stunning ! 5 mn walking from town and railway station, easy ! Seriously...nothing !
- Giacomo (9/5): Superb - Great view, big and clean room. Laundry service. Very kind owner Just a bit of mold (no bad small) on the top, but it's a common problem in city...
- Alegarciavaz (10/5): Exceptional - Nice place, very friendly, 100% recommended
- P (1/5): Bad -
- Anthony (9/5): Superb - Mohamed allowed early check-in, arranged a scooter, called my next hotel & served dinner. most helpful..
- Seyed (10/5): Amazing views, quiet and tranquil, very peaceful and within easy short walk to the town. - The hosts were very attentive and always followed up on all requests.
The breakfasts were very satisfying.
The views were really amazing right outside my bedroom.
The home is located on a hill top, withe the valley below as far as the eye can see. Everything was as expected and described on the website.
- Noriyasu (8/5): Very good - Dinner was excellent
- Altaf (8/5): A great place to stay - Views from the property.
Bed was so comfy
Breakfast Nothing
- Aleksandra (9/5): Superb -
- Christian (8/5): The best budget choice in Haputale. - A simple Sri Lankan breakfast was included in the excellent price. The location is excellent, and off the road so nice and quiet. The rooms suffer from damp. Some of the beds are more comfortable than others, and the blankets are too heavy.
- Vilém (8/5): Very good - Place, delicious dinner, pleasant owner. Lipton seat visit done for us by the owner. Old equipment, no water pressure, cold bathroom.
- Anna (6/5): A Mixed Stay with Room for Improvement - The view from the property is stunning, and that was definitely a highlight.
A standout moment was when we were invited to join the owner’s child’s birthday celebration, which added a personal touch to our stay.
The bathroom was very clean.
We also really appreciated the interaction with other guests by the common table, a proper hostel feeling! Our stay at Belview Homestay in Haputale had its highs and lows. The rooms are basic and a bit worn, which some might find charming, but we found them in need of some attention.
The wifi had was quite unstable.
However, there was an unsettling incident that really impacted our experience. Shortly after breakfast, we noticed the owner (Mohamed) checking the locks on our door. When we raised the issue, we didn’t receive a clear explanation, and the situation was quickly brushed off. This lack of transparency left us feeling uncomfortable.
While Belview Homestay has potential, especially with its view, we would likely choose to stay elsewhere on our next visit to Haputale.
- Nakandalage (4/5): Disappointing -
- Ryan (6/5): Pleasant -
- Dilum (1/5): Bad -
- Saju (1/5): Bad -
- Kasun (8/5): Very good -
- Anett (9/5): A calm staying in a private room, with breakfast included in the price. - Privat rooms with bathroom at a place with a superb view.
I really liked the breakfast. At bed weather you can't enjoy the view.
- Infaz (8/5): Very good -
- Rafael (9/5): Superb - Lovely 2 night stay. Very welcoming family, great location & delicious dinner available
- Arutselvan (5/5): Cleanliness need to improve - Easy access to main road, Ample parking
- Yves (9/5): Superb - Great location, in a house built during the mid 19th century with a big terrace overhanging the southern valley. By clear weather, it might be possible to see the sea. The owner Mohamed and his family are very kind people. We really appreciated our time there. The bed in the room where we spent the first night had a depression. We later upgraded our room to another one much more spacious and with comfortable beds.
- Hiruni (1/5): Our staying will be more warm and comfortable if they provided us with a good facilities and service - There weren't options for the breakfast. Only took what they provided for us Beds were very uncomfortable to sleep and got a terrible back pain by sleeping in there
Hot water showers were turned off sometimes during our stay. Bathroom and the room were not cleaned properly and provided old dirty towels. Power switches of the room were not working properly
- Pasan (8/5): Very good -
- Hiruni (1/5): I am not going to recommend this place to anyone because of poor services and facilities. - There is not anything I particularly liked about this place Hot water shower turned off during the stay.
Power switches also not working properly. Had to wait few hours untill they prepare the room for us. The room was not cleaned that much to our expectations.
- Nora (10/5): Alround dream package to enjoy the mountains of Sri Lanka - Favorite accommodation of my travels! - The view just in front of the room is amazing and peaceful. The bathroom of my room was great, big and pretty designed with a hot shower. Also I appreciated the heavy blanket of my bed, as it was really comfortable for a little cold nights in the mountains. The family was specially kind and I felt really good and safe staying at there property as a solo traveler. High recommendation also for the Tuk Tuk Guide (connected to the bell view guest house), offering fair prices and bring you to lipton’s seat, waterfalls or even to Yale national park. well guided!
- Dileepa (10/5): Exceptional - Best view, and comfortable room and clean
- Wickramasinghe (10/5): Exceptional -
- Thihan (1/5): Bad -
- Constanza (8/5): Nice - the view and the kindness of the host There is not much of a boundary between the privacy that the guest wants and the host's family life.
- Klara (9/5): Superb - Having read some of the reviews we came with some reservation, but it turned out to be a very nice place to stay. It is a small family run business in an old atmospheric colonial building. Rooms are spacious and clean. It is close to the town, but very quite, with a stunning view. The owner is very diligent.
- Dulce (8/5): Very good - The staff were very nice and the food was amazing!!
Very helpful and they prepared our lunch box. A bit humidity smell in some rooms which is because of the mountain weather
- Bendeguz (10/5): The view and the atmosphere are really amazing here and all of these for very affordable prices. Fun fact: if you reach -
- Ibrahim.issa (9/5): Superb -
- Helena (10/5): Exceptional - Definitely the nicest accommodation I've had throughout my trip. Georgeos room and likewise the view. The owner was so kind that he picked me up from the station upon arrival. Decent breakfast. OK location. The room and the view ❤️ There's nothing I did not like.
- Amanda (7/5): Good -
- Bart (7/5): Good - The family was friendly and helpful.
The homemaid diner was super!! Breakfast was good, but basic.
The bathroom was clean, but old. The house is an old British colonisers house (which has its charm offcourse)
Not a lot of luxury, but the price was very fair.
Nice view and nearby the city! We hiked from Lipton's Seat downhill. Beautiful hike and stunning views!! We would advice a tuktuk to bring you to Lipton's Seat in stead off organised by the hotel. It works very well, very reliable and the price is much lower.
- Kristýna (10/5): Very kind host and the most beautiful view here. This place is peaceful and quiet and they cook the best dinner here. Yo -
- Joao (10/5): Exceptional - The place is up a hill so the view from the garden is really incredible. Bathroom is really cool. Room is big and bed is comfortable. Nothing
- Edu (10/5): Exceptional - Extremely friendly owner, helped us with everything we asked for. Even went to the shop to get us some things so that we didn't have to go ourselves. Room was great, spacious and very comfortable beds. Dinner and breakfast were also good. -
- Hana (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was perfect
- Dupuis (9/5): Nice stay with a nice view - The guesthouse is very good located. Our host was very helpful and always indicates us the cheapest way to get around. As Backpackers we really appreciate it! We had a really nice view! The bed was quite comfy but with a "hole" in the middle, so that with my friend we were always meeting in the middle of the bed.
- Buddika (9/5): Very pleasant atmosphere - The place was very pleasant and calm. I really enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and the staff was really helpful. Great value for money
- Mallikage (1/5): Bad - Clean and Smile faces from staff.
- Diane (6/5): Alright for short stay could be improved - Lovely view from our room Bathroom was clean and good hot water, the curry in evening was delicious Bed and pillows very hard could have had a fan for damp ness not the best breakfast
- Ravindu (7/5): Good - outdoor view is beautiful, room is good water didn't drain properly in the bathroom's commode area
- Tamás (10/5): Lovely - The location and the view was really nice, the city is only 5 minutes by walk and there are stores and restaurants as well. They offered good breakfast and dinner. The family is so nice and very kind, always open to a chat and the kids were so lovely, i really felt the part of this lovely family during my stay. -
- Hendrik (10/5): Coming back! - Perfect location if you like hiking or walking. Very friendly family is running the place.
The food was very good, I had dinner every night in the guesthouse.
Stayed a week, was brilliant.
- Lahiru (10/5): Exceptional -
- Cornelia (7/5): I had a great time - Price-performance ratio is great, I mean this place is not luxury, but it’s totally fine and the breakfast was amazing! The view is also great! To be honest, the owner was not the friendliest person. Of course, anyone has sometime a bad day but you should try to give your guests the best feeling.
- Dujardin (10/5): Exceptional - I had a great time in Haputale, staying in the Bel view hostel
The family is adorable, very helpful. I could eat dinner during my stay and enjoy delicious breakfast.
Most importantly: i have rarely seen such a clean place! Mohamed spends around 2 hours cleaning the room from floor to ceiling whenever someone leaves (i have seen him!). And it is not always clean in other places i have been to, so this is why i mention it particularly!
Thank you so much for the hard work and great food 🙏
- Ross (1/5): The worst place I stayed during my one month trip to Sri Lanka. Room is filthy -
