• Roxie (8/5): Anniversary retreat - The bathrooms were completely renovated and in very good condition for a historic property. The small restaurant menu was excellent for a smaller facility and the food was excellent. Being a historic property did mean there was no elevator and the stairs were steep especially for older guests but not unexpected.
• John (7/5): OK, but not the old Charlotte - Still a charming little inn in a charming little town. When Gary owned the place, it was obviously the labor of love of a person of taste: he ran an excellent restaurant in a small resort town, mixed the drinks himself, and somehow kept the place well-staffed. The new owners have sold off the old dining room, and what used to be the breakfast room--charming, don't get me wrong--is both breakfast and dining room, and breakfast is no longer complimentary. My daughter and I were the only guests for dinner on a Friday night (off-season); the food wasn't bad, but the laminated menu was garish and one had an overall impression of a tarnished jewel. Always sad when that happens.

Will not stay here again The room was tiny! No place to even put suitcase. Shower pray was bad hard v to get soap and shampoo off. Tiny tv. Not a relaxing place to stay. And Pricey ! Will Not stay here again
• Steven (8/5): This is the only well-located and reasonably priced lodging option in adorable historic Onancock - Location is excellent.... right in the center of the (quite small) town. Everything was as expected. Though no separate lot, street and public lot parking is right nearby. It is an old building but pretty well maintained. Heat, hot water etc. worked well. Rooms are cozy but cute and functional. Complimentary coffee and snacks in the lobby was a bonus. No on-site staff. Didn't need them and assume they are only a call away. Could have used a microwave; if not in the room in the lobby (where there is a communal fridge). They had no operational restaurant (though one physically exists) but there are decent options across the street and around town.

• James (8/5): A Very Enjoyable Get-Away - Small but comfy, quiet, and clean room. We enjoyed Mallards for dinner & sunset and The Foggy Place and Corner Bakery for breakfast. A short drive to catch the ferry to Tangier Island, where we had an enjoyable day.
• John (10/5): Comfortable stay in an Iconic Landmark. - Restaurant was closed when we arrived, but snacks and drinks were available in the lobby. Mini-,Bar in room. Did not have an elevator. 2 floors.

• jacqueline (9/5): Very comfy cozy place to stay. Been here in spring, summer and fall., summer and fall - Always stay here going to and back NJ yo Emerald Isle NC. Very quaint town and love grabbing a bite to eat and drink at the Wharf. Usually have a lovely breakfast but restaurant was closed.

Walk to the marina , coffe bar art studios and eclectic shops. Savor the slower paced friendly hometown feel of the village and than dine and relax in an elegant historic charm of The Charlotte Hotel , a hidden gem .
• Denise (7/5): The Hotel met our traveling needs. - The hotel was conveniently located near the ferry we were scheduled to take the following morning . Hotel restaurant was not opened & it wasn't shared prior to our stay that it was closed. Bed was rather small.

• Verified traveler (10/5): - This is a quaint b&b-style hotel in a charming town. The room was comfortable and sufficient. There's no fridge or kettle in the room, but there's a Keurig downstairs and baked goods from the bakery next door. There was a pub across the street, and we thought the festivities might keep us up, but everyone turned in early and it wasn't an issue. Overall, a very pleasant stay.

• Sarah (10/5): Can’t wait to go back! - The room was bright, comfortable, and clean. We loved the location and its walkability. Every little detail of the room was so sweet. We particularly liked how the shades were tied up, there was stain glass in the room, and the best was SO comfy. It’s the little things!

• Maria (8/5): In the center of town, comfortable bed. - Very clean room (there was a small hole in the ceiling in the corner, looked like damage). Comfortable bed, small sink (difficult to wash my face in). Only a few staff members but they were all friendly and very helpful. Restaurant was very small, decent food. We were there on a first Friday during the summer - the immediate street was closed and a local band was playing until around 9pm. Bar downstairs was busy during that time. We made several different day trips around within 15-20 minutes drive. Thin walls, can hear other guests in the hallway easily, but everyone was polite and not obnoxious during our stay. Very limited breakfast options, and overpriced.

• Nduku (9/5): Loved the vibe - I like they have kept the historical aesthetic. The check in process was a bit weird, no one at front desk but they left instructions and were available on phone. You can get locked out of your room if you leave your key - it's so easy to forget to carry them since we are used to Key cards.
• Michael (4/5): - No one at desk for checkin. We were unable to get in room because it was locked. Had to call and walk back down 3 flights of stairs for master key after driving 8 hours. AC dripped on floor in plastic cup with paper towels. Water stains on ceiling and window shades. Water in kuerig seemed like it was there for a while, not drinkable.

• kristen (4/5): - No one was there when we arrived to check in so we had to call the phone number they left at The front desk, on the hotel phone since our own phones had no service. Once we finally got checked in. The room was fine but door hard to lock/unlock. No fridge in room and no coffee. WiFi was not good. We kept getting kicked off and couldn’t make calls or send texts unless we went to the Irish pub across the street. When we got back to hotel after dinner, no ice or water in lobby and no cups or water for tea. In the am, Keurig was empty and no cups. Tv kept buffering. It’s a cute place but needs better wifi and an ice maker and water/coffee.

Always closed We were locked out of front door on 1st night Could not access room. We just got an apology but no compensation and the staff didn't even tell the customer not to lock the door. No signs to not lock door 1.Old mattress, dips in middle,2 burnt lightbulb in tall lamp, 3. had to lift toilet lid and jiggle lever to get flapper to stop 4. leaking, old stained blinds, 5. room was on 3rd floor and no help with heavy luggage up both stairs. 6. Staff not present most of the time

• collins (8/5): - A nice little hotel. In a cute little town. It’s an old property, but it is very very clean. Do to the nature of the building you can hear everyone talking and walking. We were woken at 8:30 this morning by the room above us being vacuumed, which was very loud. Overall a nice stay!
• Verified traveler (8/5): 4* could easily be 5* - Honestly, we loved it! Cute, quaint, clean and very well maintained. Our room was great, the location was excellent and the town was beautiful. Downside: our TV didn't work, there was no coffee in the lobby, and we saw no hotel staff from the time we checked in at 5:30 p.m. until literally when we we're checking out at 9:00 a.m. ...and the receptionist is very pleasant! Will definitely go back.
• Coralene (9/5): Quaint rooms in historic property - Had a self check-in when I got there at 6:00pm. The restaurant was also closed. The room was quaint, had a mini-split for climate control, very comfortable bed and pillows. Had a mini fridge in the lobby for guests, as well as a Keurig and oatmeal packets for those of us who had to leave early. For dinner there were two locations across the street. I didn't like the high-wattage light bulbs in the bedside sconces. I prefer a nice, soft, low watt bulb for a reading light. Those were just HARSH waking up to in the morning!

• Christina (10/5): - Beautiful hand-painted walls and stairs. Very comfortable room & bed. No staff present at all for check-in - not a problem, but no one to ask questions. I forgotten a toothbrush- no place to get one anywhere nearby. Also - they had lovely Pellegrino waters, but no opener for them! Coffee in the room would be a huge plus. Otherwise it was wonderful!
• Verified traveler (6/5): - I had stayed at this property once before and found it absolutely charming, and convenient for family visit. However, this time, when I entered my room, though it was made up and ready, it was obvious that someone had been laying on the the bed as the top was rumpled. In addition, I had a problem with the key during my last visit. This time, when I stepped out of the room just go retrieve my bag from my car out front, I closed the door, and was unable to unlock the door with the key provided. If it weren't for the chef who was resting in the room across the hall and heard my efforts to open the door, I would have been stuck (did not have cell phone with me) until someone working at the property showed up. At 3pm, when I checked in, there is no one there, hence the self check-in process. Otherwise, I appreciate the property's unique charm and location in the hidden gem that is Onancock.

• Patricia (4/5): - The hotel looked charming on the website but it loses its patina quickly once you get inside. Very dated furnishings, staff not at desk & then didn’t answer the phone number left to call for an issue. No mention on website that 3rd flare rooms required a climb of 40 stairs. The most problematic was heating that did not work - way too hot, nothing could be done to fix so we slept with window open & heat turned off. Not enough value for the price.
• Amanda (10/5): - This Hotel is a gem. Quaint adorable. Comfortable beds. Caution to those needing elevators- there is just a chairlift that looks dated and narrow staircase. But super adorable
• Leighette (8/5): Very good - Loved the location. Very friendly staff. Two flights up, and on the first flight, you had to clear a broken down chair lift. Should over a few free bottles of non sparkling water.
• Gloria (6/5): Be warned - there is NO FREE BREAKFAST!! - I really wanted to like this hotel. It is quaint and has the perfect location in Onancock. It is also very quiet. But two issues. First I booked a room that said it included a free breakfast. When I inquired about this in the morning, I was told guests get a 15% discount for breakfast. Despite having paperwork indicated that I booked a room with breakfast, they would not honor it. By the way - the cost for an omelette there was $20. Second, there is no staff at the hotel other than at breakfast and dinner. They have a "self check-in" with an envelope that awaits you after you enter with a note inside saying your room is open and the key is in the room. Glad I was traveling with my husband because if I was solo, this would make me uncomfortable. Also, if something goes a bit off-kilter as it did for us during your stay, you need to call an 800 number to have someone help you out. This created headaches for us as we had things to do and had to wait a half hour or so before things got straightened out. So if you feel the price is right given not honoring your booking with breakfast and you aren't worried about no one being on premises, then this might work for you!

• Margie (4/5): I understand it's an old Hotel with a lot of old charm, overall, it did not meet our expectations. - We arrived at requested time, and received a note to self check in, call if a problem, glad it was communicated. Room was clean, nice bathroom, bed was very comfortable, and staff was very nice. We had trouble getting into the room, struggled w/the key, after working it. We noticed a musty old smell, and there was no bedside table to put a drink on. Later on there was loud machinery running next door late at night, fortunately it went off.
• Trip55566499030 (2/5): A big dining disappointment. - Made reservations at this boutique restaurant in the hotel. It was a disaster. Took some time to order drinks, then the wine ordered needed the manager to get it from another location. Fine, but how about offering us the option to choose a different bottle. Grandson ordered a Shirley Temple, they were all out! What? The glass of red wine was served chilled! Not a good sign. Let's say, it went from bad to worse. After 50 minutes, still waiting for food. And we were the only customers! With our patience running thin, we asked to speak to the manager. She came to the table dripping with attitude. So we paid for the beverages and left before our food was served but not before being called "entitled"!!!! It may have been the worst dining experience ever!

• Charles (7/5): Unusual experience. - I would have mixed reviews here. The room was nice, although pretty small. It was also clean and comfortable. The bathroom was more spacious. No one was around when we checked in - a key and a note were left at the front desk. We liked the town and we had parking right in front of the hotel. There are plenty of places to shop and nice areas to walk around. We love the Blarney Stone Pub across the street. No one was available at first. We finally saw some staff the next morning. Also, the hotel advertises a restaurant on site for dinner and breakfast but it was not opened at either time during our stay.
• Verified traveler (4/5): - I am newly divorced and this was my first mini getaway solo. I was so excited about staying here for a night. Sadly when I arrived there was no staff and the restaurant and bar were closed and blocked off. I was able to call the manager but sadly she wasn’t even informed of the restaurant and bar being shut down and no staff on site. One of the biggest excitements was being able to enjoy the amenities but there were none.

• 113shawne (10/5): A birthday get away - Took the love of my life to the Charlotte Hotel for the second time & this visit was even more special than the last. She had the ultimate birthday weekend. I purchased the romantic package & they went above & beyond! The hotel has awesome displays of unique art, drawings, paintings, etc. Hospitality is top notch. You cannot be disappointed here!

We arrived with a warm welcome and instructions for self check in. We had dinner at the restaurant and it was delicious. The manager went above and beyond to meet our needs and was very personable and nice to chat with. We highly recommend.

Tried the afterhours number but they could not get in touch with the innkeeper. Left my number with the hotel and drove an hour away to find a place to stay for the night; never got an apology or even a contact. What a horrible, horrible little place

• john (10/5): - We had king size bed room 325. Great room with 4 windows, good size and great bed and shower. Highly recommend. Great neighborhood. Recommend Mallards on the pier for dinner. Nice wine and cheese shop next door. Very quaint town. Breakfast was excellent but...supposed to open at 800--did not open to 815 and we did not get served to 845 even though we were the only diners.

• Alice (10/5): Excellent location, helpful manager, and the hotel restaurant has amazing food and drinks. - Fantastic location and lovely hotel manager. We discovered the ferry was not functioning and she went out of her way to help us hire a private boat to Tangier. The food and was delicious and the cocktail was also fabulous. We'd definitely recommend this hotel to others who are interested in visiting this fascinating area.

• 622AlisonK (8/5): “Charming” hotel, read: it’s fine for what it is. - This is a local hotel that has comfortable rooms. I was in a queen + full room with a decent sized bathroom. Don’t expect a great night sleep as the walls are paper thin. You’ll hear the people below you cough all night and the person next door start their shower. It is historic so expect grandfathered amenities. Like a chairlift on stairs. And use of physical key that is always hard to figure out how to lock and unlock door. But it is part of the “charm” of being on eastern shore. And it is walking distance to all things in Onancock. We arrived at 8:30 at night and did shelf check in (note on desk telling us room number to simply go in).

A couple of hours after we checked ourselves in, I went downstairs and a young woman was at the desk.I asked her about the chair lift, knowing we would have to negotiate the 37 steps after returning from dinner. She fiddled with the lift but it did not budge or make a sound. She said she would make some calls. When we left for dinner she said she was waiting to hear back about the lift. I hoped it would be operational and there would be a note with instructions on it when we got back from dinner. At around 9 we returned and there was no information on how to operate the chair on the counter or on the chair. Very disappointing.
• Rebecca (4/5): - The toilet flushing mechanism was broken. Despite telling the staff and sending an email to management, we got no response. I was told when we discovered the problem immediately after checking in, we were told there were no other rooms available. When we left this morning, the maid said it had been broken when she cleaned yesterday and the repairman hadn’t shown up. There was other small problems it nothing was couldn’t have lived with.

• RivahBob (6/5): Don't go if you have a broken foot - This hotel was quite disappointing. Due to an accident, I was in a special foot device. I could get around, but with difficulty. We had made our reservation before my foot situation. My husband both emailed and called the hotel to ask for a room on the lowest floor so I wouldn't have to climb stairs. He was informed that the lowest rooms were on the second floor, but they were all reserved -- we had a reservation too but had been assigned to the third floor (why they couldn't just swap us for someone with a reservation they had assigned to the second floor isn't clear). They said I would only have to confront stairs between the second and third floors since there was a chair lift between the first and second floors. When we arrived, there was an envelope telling us how to find our room on the third floor --no human being was there to greet us or help us. The chair lift was either broken or we couldn't figure how to work it --there were no instructions on the device. We called the 800 number provided for help, but the person on the other end had no idea that there was a chair lift, but said she would check and someone would call us back. When we left for dinner, there was person on duty, but she couldn't make the chair lift work either. No one ever called us back. Bottom line -- I had to climb up and down 37 steps to go to and from the room. It was slow and painstakingly difficult. I'll never return ... the lack of customer service was shocking.

• 1Buffettfan (4/5): Disappointed - My wife broke her foot a month ago. I called a day before our planned arrival to ask for a lower level room so she would have as few stairs as possible. I was told our room would be on third floor and no second floor rooms were available, BUT “there is a chair lift from floor 1 to 2.” Arrived at hotel. No personnel are here. Can’t get chair lift to work. Called the help number and person who answered knows nothing about it. Nobody has called back in an hour. Susan hobbled up 2 long flights of stairs.

• Kurt (10/5): - The property centrally located to shopping cans food and entertainment. Property is well maintained and clean. I disliked climbing the two sets of fifteen stairs to our room on the third floor. Overall enjoyed the stay all will recommend it.
• tigerwhale (10/5): Great couple of nights in Onancock - We recently visited the Eastern Shore for our anniversary and spent the first couple of nights in the lovely waterfront village of Onancock. Having never been there before, we were lucky enough to select the Charlotte for our stay. The hotel is nicely renovated, but still has its historic charm. Room was comfy and quaint, with a very good AC unit (thankfully...it was near 100F both days). Location was great, in center of downtown, with only a short walk to waterfront. Brunch was delicious and very reasonably priced. The proprietors were friendly, helpful, and service was great. We would definitely stay there again if ever back in the area.

• Maria (6/5): OK and charming, but will probably look for other options when next in Onancock. - The staff was very friendly and helpful. And, the location is excellent. I didn’t have a chance to try the restaurant this trip, but it had enjoyed a great reputation in the past. The room could have used bedside tables, though I realize there are space constraints. The biggest problem was lack of coffee-making facilities. One coffee maker on the ground floor had run out of water by 7:00 am, and there’s no available sink or water supply to fill it. Ideally, each room should have a coffee maker or, at least, each floor. If that’s not possible, put extra carafes of water out, so the coffee maker could be refilled. Also, no creamers were there either — they had run out by 7:00 am also. And the waste bin was full to overflowing. That was the biggest disappointment and drawback.

• Abdelaziz (3/5): Not friendly at all - The staff were not friendly , very stiff and automated kind not talkative or without a smile type. Not very welcoming at all . I called couple days before to change my 2 bookings to king beds and the manager that answered the phone supposedly changed it to 2 California kings rooms after i agreed on the $20.00 extra but when we got there nothing was done . Weird .
• SR-1007 (10/5): Quaint bayside Inn - A quaint and welcoming inn, in a scenic waterfront town. Great service (we loved Cheyenne) and wonderful breakfast. Clean rooms and free WiFi service. Comfortable bed and a very clean bathroom. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
• Dana (8/5): - Perfect location and the hotel was clean! I like the early check in feature as well. Our only problem was we were told we didn't need to make reservations for the restaurant on site. So at 6 we came down to eat and they said due to short staff they are only taking the reservations on the books and that was it. I was shocked that they wouldn't even seat or serve the hotel guests. I understand they were understaffed and was possibly a rare occurrence but it was the main reason I choose this hotel due to them having a bar/ restaurant so I was a little disappointed in that. I would still definitely recommend and stay here again.
