Guest Reviews
- Veronica (10/5): - Buen servicio
- Herbert (10/5): - They're always friendly and helpful.
- Siobhan (10/5): - Nice staff and helpful. Our plane got in hours later than it was supposed to and accommodated us genially.
We enjoy the breakfast courtyard and all the plants
- ZaruW (2/5): Locked us outside and didn't let us in & scam tactics - This hotel has 2 address listings for some reason. I'm reviewing on both.
If you book a room for 2 people, they expect you to pay an extra 200 quetzales per person that VISITS your room. So if you want to bring an additional friend over for 10 minutes, you must pay. If you switch the person you're going to share the room with, it's extra 200... Pretty ridiculous, but that's not the best bit.
My friend and I were starving because we skipped dinner and it was near 1am. We asked them if we can leave the locked premises to get food for 1-2 hours, they said it's fine and just knock or ring the doorbell and they'd let us back in.
Well, we got back and no answer, tried to call them, message them via the booking service, knock and rang the doorbell for 30 minutes with weird people around feeling a bit unsafe... Nothing. They didn't keep their word. We had to stay in the $2 per person hotel across the street with cockroaches around the room. pfff (This is not an exaggeration)
- Mario (10/5): - Me encantó, un lugar sencillo pero acogedor y un personal muy amable y dispuesto a ayudar.
- Jessica (10/5): - Hermosa estadía
- Karen (6/5): - staff was great - looked after providing early morning transportation to the airport, ensured it was on time.
- Christian (8/5): - Un hotel muy centrico, seguro. Sus habitaciones son sensillas va de acorde al precio.
- rene (10/5): - very good for the price
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Not too clean. Rooms laid out in awkward ways. Rude staff.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Muy lindo el hotel y el desayuno muy rico lástima que el último día aunque dijimos q salíamos más temprano desde el día anterior no nos prepararon nada.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The receptionis was very efficient. But the cleannines of room disatisfied completely. Noises all night long. No TV working, no Wi-fi. I don't recommended it any more. It was a good place to stay, no more.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very helpful staff, spacious room and well kept up.
- billdublin (6/5): Very basic - OK, it’s cheap and in a very convenient location for city centre sightseeing. However, it’s lacklustre, just about clean and the staff are civil but not friendly.
The coffee available in the cafe area by reception is tolerable.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - It was close to the main plaza in Zona 1. I felt safe there.
Nice patio filled with plants - colonial style.
I wasn’t happy about the receptionist, a nice girl trying to do her best but unfortunately unable to help her customers with the essentials like : where to find a travel agency open on Sunday, and knew nothing about transport out of town. Seemed only to know about one specific driver who could take us places and have us pay a lot for his services.
Also the breakfast served the hotel was quite decent but way too expensive.
- Louis (8/5): - Although the street on which the hotel was situated looks a bit derelict, the hotel is a short walk to a nice street with lots of shops and restaurants. In general, for the price, the room was a good deal.
- burwof (10/5): I would highly recommend it - I stayed before change of ownership and about a two year lapse of going back. The old owners did nothing and it was an uncomfortable hotel, reason for the two year lapse. Went back and big change, for the better. I live in Guatemala and use this hotel quite frequently, good value for your money.
- Dave (6/5): Reasonable hotel if you are alone and on a budget - We decided to stay here in an attempt to save a little money. This is a reasonably nice hotel, but I can not recommend it due to their unusual surcharges. We arrived late at night (around 10:30pm) and the entire hotel was completely dark inside. There were no lights on in any of the hallways or the lobby, and they did not turn them on for us when we arrived. If it was not for the “flashlight” option on my phone, I would have had a hard time climbing the stairs to my room. The room was comfortable, however I didn’t notice when I booked the reservation that there is a “surcharge” for the “airport shuttle”. (Every other hotel I have stayed at in Guatemala City has offered a complimentary airport shuttle). Their “shuttle” was actually just a taxicab they called for us, who directly charged us Q180 for the ride. This is much higher than the usual rate we have paid for a similar cab ride in the past. Also, buried in the fine print, which I failed to notice until later, was a $15 surcharge, per night, for having a second person in the room. Add this all up, and our stay here was actually more expensive than it would have been at our preferred hotel in the same area, the Hotel Royal Palace. My recommendation is to skip this one and just stay at the Royal Palace instead, especially if you have more than one person with you. The Royal Palace has a much better location, better facilities, better service, a better restaurant, free airport shuttle, and no unexpected surcharges.
- bianca (8/5): Confortable and inexpensive - The Hotel is small but very quiet it’s clean and found what I needed a clean and comfortable bed hot water and working bathroom. I don’t recommend the restaurant it’s expensive for the kind of menu they have
- David (8/5): - Good location in Zone 1. Clean. Secure. Accessible. Friendly staff.
- Genebuk (8/5): Clean and Quiet, Close to walking mall - I recently stayed here 2 nights, a week apart as we traveled to Nebaj. The rooms were clean and quiet but basic. The staff doesn’t speak English but were very helpful and friendly. Our breakfast at the cafe was good. It is only a couple blocks to the walking mall Street with churches, shops and restaurants. It was nice to have something to do on our last night nearby. On my second stay, we had to leave by 5 a.m. for a flight. The night watchman opened the doors and stayed with us for twenty minutes until our ride came. It is not a long ride to the airport, only 88 Q or $12.00. I would stay here again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Clean and safe - Very close to main plaza, not fancy but clean and the team is very helpful.........
- Rene (8/5): Very good choice ! - Super clean ! Nice and quite!
- Carlos (4/5): Just for spending the night before going to hotel - Relative close to the airport (15 minutes with no traffic). It seems it is located in a not safe area since I asked the receptionist if I can go out for dinner (restaurant is only two blocks from the hotel) and she told me not to go because it was not safe at that time (9:00 pm). Only one UBER working at 3:00 am, so, you maybe need to go in taxi.
- PhilippM1043 (6/5): Average Hotel - I stayed one night with my girlfriend as we had a flight the next morning from Guatemala City. First of all we went to the wrong hotel as there is also a Hotel Ajau (not Colonial). A hotel staff showed us then the way to the Colonial just the next block. Staff is friendly and rooms are spacious and clean. We've been given room no 1 right next to the reception. It was really noisy till late and again very early in the morning. In the shower only cold water was available. As it was a hot it wasn't a big issue for me this day but generally not acceptable for this price. The bathroom was also a bit old and used (not dirty). In the end I think a bit pricy but with another room, not having the issues above, I think it's ok.
- alexisl370 (8/5): Clean and elegant if also basic - We stayed for one night at Hotel Ajau Colonial, and were very happy with it. The building itself is gorgeous with a sun lit courtyard with a fountain. The room had everything we needed, nice beds, TV and hot water in the bathroom. If we were to stay again for longer, maybe I'd spring for one of the more luxurious rooms - but for this we just needed something basic. I would definitely go back. Staff was friendly and helpful and they have a basic restaurant for breakfast and snacks.
- lily_och (10/5): Nice and cheap - Hotels are expensive in Guatemala city, so you don't really have many options. We stayed here a few times, if you ask people where you could stay they'll recommend you this hotel. Many people recommended me here. It is close to la sexta so you can go walk, and it is safe. Plus it is clean and has nice architecture.
- 256tm (2/5): Only stay here if desperate - there are way better options in the city - Rooms are filthy and in a state of disrepair with broken furniture, lamps, wires sticking out, etc. Public bathrooms are disgusting, and the shower/bath facilities are therefore unusable. The first room we received had 1 bed that was rock hard (I could not press into it with 170+lbs of weight) and 1 bed that was incredibly soft (I sat and immediately sank to the springs). Staff is friendly but the combination of abysmal conditions and a pretty high $/night means that you should avoid this hotel.
- M9679ETalexm (6/5): Colonial type with helpful service - We came to Guatemala on a budget and planned to see a lot for less. If you looking for high end this isnt the place as the high end hotels are in Zone 4 ranging from $90us-$250 a nite. If you looking for somewhere to get a quiet rest after site seeing for between$18-$50us then this is the place in Zone 1. It has 5 floors and no elevators so if you get a room anywhere from #301 to 510 the stairs are a killer. Small cafe downstairs has excellent local dishes. Yes the place is run down as it has seen its better days but the staff is exceptionally helpful to your needs.
- GlobalRunaways (6/5): Average - Old school charm in the heart of Guatemala City. Comfortable & large rooms. Security door to street front. Free water, coffee & tea. Breakfast is not included but there is a cafe on site. The showers are freezing, otherwise ok for couples or groups. Also has good wifi. The last night was rather noisy with the hotel lending it's rooms to some pretty racy clientele. Not sure whether we'd stay again, service was fairly average and we're pretty over cold showers!
- justdoit001 (2/5): don't go there - just staying one night but just want to get out of it
motel feel
got welcomed by a grumpy receptionist
rooms old ,small and uninspiring
really not a good pick
this hotel is ranked 40 out of 47 - just discovered it now - there was a reason
- refaelnn (8/5): a nice budget hotel - I stayed in this hotel in august 2014. the hotel is situated in a beautiful colonial building. it's in the center of the town. they have wifi (but not in the rooms). cost me us 20 for a big single room. I recommend.
- annet782 (6/5): One night is okay.... - I would only stay here one night, on the way to somewhere else. The hotel is in a beautiful old building, but could do with a renovation. The location is not so good ( everyone will tell you to be careful if thieves) but there is a police headquarters around the corner and an armed guard at the pharmacy next door. The hotel room seemed nasty--I didn't want to touch the floor. However, I can't deny the value, the amount billed to our credit card was like $14 and that's with a bathroom!
- fallwater (4/5): Shabby - The hotel is old and shabby. The bed spreads needed replacing years ago. linens to thin. Blankets old. Feng shway uncomfortable. too much clutter and poor placement of furnishings. Bathroom clean, no pressure in sink took for ever for toilet basin to fill, good shower. Front desk was very helpfull with directions, calling for taxi's etc. I would not stay again.
- FionaC299 (4/5): Will do for one night - I struggled with this review, because we saw 2 other hotels around the area, and this one was the best one...it was late at night, and we weren't interested in walking around anymore. So it's better than what we saw.... but it's definitely not better than what is in Antigua. I wouldn't call this place expensive by any means, but the price does not match the room. I will say the beds were good - a lot of places have very soft spring mattresses, but this one is still soft, but firm enough that my back wasn't put out. The location is reasonable and the downstairs interior is rather cute. Just shame about the room and bathroom!
- Felisuke (6/5): it's alright... - This place probably had its heyday a few decades back. Today, it is dark, a bit run-down, and like a haunted mansion at night.
The workers were very attentive and had good service, but the facilities... there are water and coffee pitchers out in the halls, so that was nice. There are 3 types of rooms (shower & TV, shower & no TV, no shower & no TV), and I had the middle choice. The TV is small and old, so wouldn't see a reason to pay extra. The communal shower is okay looking, but I preferred to have a private bathroom. The internet works well, but you have to use it in the communal area. They have a restaurant, but I never saw it open.
The toilet was fine, but the shower could only provide "hot" water if it trickled on you (a full force shower came out cold). The two beds were uncomfortable (one stiff like a board and the other squeaky and lumpy) and had a slight smell.
Almost all the visitors were Latin American, so I think that this must be the budget choice for anyone who needs to be in the center of town. It has a perfect location to everything in Zona 1, so that's nice. A yellow taxi to the airport is about Q40 ($5).
I would recommend it as an inexpensive choice for those staying in Zona 1 (el centro), and those who want a step up from a hostel.
- mysticmusic (4/5): Dark Room, No Hot Water, Doubt I'll Return - I spent one night here. Although the building had a quaint charm, my room was oppressively dark and lacked hot water. The service seemed virtually nonexistent. It did include access to a single older computer with Internet.
I arrived on a Sunday and took the Trans-Metro to the older part of the city and from there, I went by foot until I stumbled across this place. I payed the cheapest price of about $18. So maybe the $25 rooms are fine. They did offer complementary coffee which wasn't very good.
My biggest complaint is with Guatemala City. A relatively ugly crime ridden metropolis teeming with desperately poor people trying to part you from your money. If you come to Guatemala, head straight for Antigua, unless you must conduct your business in Guatemala City.
- Guest (8/5): Enjoyed the Colonial Hotel and downtown Guatemala City! - Guatemala City downtown has many interesting places but if you read most travel guides you might become afraid and think there is nothing here. I am not discounting the crime problems and if you decide to stay here, I do suggest that you don't walk around after dark. The front desk will call a taxi driver they know. The hotel is secure and it is beautiful. The price is right. The staff is nice. I had a large, old fashioned room facing a quiet hallway. My only disappointment concerned the bathroom, which had a bug problem. Contrary to what you might have heard, the central zone of Guatemala has beautiful churches, a lovely arch over a street by the post office and interesting restaurants. I certainly prefer it to the Zona Viva, where I could be sitting in a shopping in Miami.
- LATriton75 (10/5): Great budget hotel - My father and I stayed at the Hotel Colonial for 5 nights back in July of 2006. The room was clean, the beds were comfortable, and the staff is friendly. The location is very central, right in the heart of Zona 1, close to restaurants and the Mercado Central. The hotel also has parking.
My only complaint would be that for breakfast, the kitchen would run out of fried plantains or cheese. The very nice lady that served breakfast explained that they only make a limited amount of food to prevent waste.
My father is in the process of moving to Guatemala. He's was in Guatemala in October 2006 and again last week. He has stayed at Hotel Colonial both times.
The hotel is housed in a very interesting building, very typical for 1930's Guatemala City style architecture with 2 stories and beautiful central courtyard/patio with seating. The front desk clerk told me that the building was originally an orphanage.
The shops shut down early (7PM), and there's hardly no one on the streets (7a Avenida) after 9PM in fear of the thieves in the area. Dominos Pizza and Pollo Campero does not deliver past 9PM. Take a taxi and go to Zona 4 to Cuatro Grados Norte for late night fun!
