Guest Reviews
- Ralitza (9/5): -
- Camila (10/5): - Muy
- Fabienne (9/5): - Atmosphere: calm and relaxing Food choices at the restaurant could be better and are overpriced
- Patricia (10/5): - Todo Nada
- Natalia (10/5): -
- Andrew (7/5): Lovely setting, great staff, amazing wildlife nature experience but poor management of restaurants. - Wonderful experience glamping on a beautiful island. Great being in amongst nature sleeping and awoken with the sounds of the forest. The management of the restaurant was poor. Whilst the staff were wonderful they lacked direction and organisation. Our food experiences were very poor. Main meals arrived whilst we were still eating the starters. The wrong starter and main meals arrived another night so we had to eat our meals individually whilst the other waited for their correct meal to arrive. Also my wife had really bad sickness after the first nights meal.
- Markus (10/5): -
- JuanSangre (10/5): Go Glamping at Isla Chiquita - Isla Chiquita Glamping resort provides an experience like no other! Book an A/C cabin/tent-it’s going to be hot. Book excursions to Isla Tortuga and Curu park. Book a message. Enjoy the ice cold Pilzen and Imperial beer. Chill out. Pura Vida on island time. Our meals were excellent at the restaurant. The staff went the distance to make us feel comfortable. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The sunset views from the top of the island are epic. I highly recommend this place.
- Tour54383183216 (10/5): Loved our stay at Isla Chiquita! - We spent a week at Isla Chiquita and had the most relaxing vacation! I loved so many things about it - our “tent” was super comfortable and clean, the views were beautiful, we enjoyed swimming in both the pool and ocean, and loved the cool soaking tub on our deck. We also did several of the fun and educational activities (Isla Tortuga trip, bird watching, bioluminescence boat trip, Curu Bio Reserve and fantastic massage) But the best part was the staff - so friendly and helpful throughout our stay - I didn’t want to say goodbye when our week was over!
- Ian (9/5): - Food generally pretty tasteless, poor and over priced. the food. I couldn't have stayed there for more than 2 nights.
- gayleforman (10/5): Low key high end glamping - I'm reluctant to write this review because I don't want to spoil this place but it is truly magical. If you are looking for a low-key, low fi , relaxing trip to a beautiful, carbon neutral spot this is it.
It's a bit of a pain to get here. A few hour drive from San Jose airport then an hour plus ferry ride and then a short water and once you're on the island there's really not much to do except for swim laze kayak paddleboard hike her a massage or facial and eat but there are tours off island that they will set up.
The menu is small the food was delicious. They also do a private dinner on the beach for special occasions which was magical.
Not all of the tents have AC and it can get hot at night especially higher up on the hill and further from the ocean breeze is but with the fans on we were fine.
Staff was uniformly lovely and warm.
- Rosa María (7/5): A couple of days max 3 days would do,, it lacks of cosy places to chill,,and the workers are not trained enough to give - The proximity to wild nature Overpricing of everything, and the petty breakfast,, if needed a new portion of even bread , the charged extra,, apart from everyday offerings the same thing
- Dor (10/5): - The staff! They were perfect! They were receptive and helpful with every ask we had. The intro when we checked in was very welcoming and made us feel we came to paradise. The room we ordered did not have A/C. We didn't notice, but that's what we ordered. It was way too hot. We were offered a room with an AC with a small additional fee immediately.
- Sue (9/5): Great opportunity to completely relax in nature - Great! -
- Elizabeth (10/5): We enjoyed our short stay and wish we had longer. Loved snorkeling! - Beautiful location and great service. The glamping tent was a little oasis we didn’t want to leave.
- Lina (10/5): -
- Paul (9/5): -
- Lise (10/5): Gorgeous gentle times - Everything Nothing
- Sunshine787887 (10/5): Paradise - Absolutely amazing experience! From the moment we arrived the staff made us feel so welcome. The food was always delicious, and they even prepared a fish we had caught during our excursion. We saw howler monkeys right from our deck! For someone looking for paradise for a few days, this is the place!!
- Lisa (8/5): - I love this property. Beautiful island, well maintained and the food is excellent! I’ve stayed here a few times before and once with a large group. There is a huge communication gap between the people that do the booking for the reservations/excursions and the staff onsite. Each time the staff is running around trying to accommodate things that were already communicated prior to arrival.
- Nuria (10/5): A perfect romantic getaway - The location is very beautiful and the tents are very well equipped. The stag is super friendly and helpful. A little paradise worth a visit.
- Severin (10/5): -
- Alice (10/5): -

- parknaturalist78 (10/5): Great Stay - My family and I stayed here and had an incredible time! We did have one of the fancy tents with AC that we used at night, however there was good airflow. We saw iguanas and howler monkeys around the resort regularly. We also went on the night bioluminescent tour and Tortuga Island tour. Both were wonderful! We really loved our guide, Jorge, for both tours. And we saw some puffer fish as we paddle boarded near the beach. All the staff were friendly. My husband and I both got massages too at the Nimbu Spa. Angie gave an incredible massage and was very kind!
- Road39991329288 (10/5): Lovely place to recharge in nature - We loved glamping at Isla Chiquita. The property is very well designed for what it offers: an immersive nature experience in beautifully appointed permanent tents. The tents are extremely comfortable, with air conditioning, fans, and lovely bathrooms—ours even had a jacuzzi on the deck, which was a wonderful bonus.
The food at the resort’s restaurant is high quality and consistently delicious. The beach is pleasant—more gray sand than white—but the sea itself is beautiful and inviting. There are plenty of activities to enjoy, including kayaking, paddleboarding, bioluminescence tours, hiking trails, and more. Isla Tortuga is also very close and makes for a great excursion.
The staff truly makes the experience special. Everyone was warm and attentive, and I especially want to highlight Angie, the massage therapist—she is outstanding. I would happily stay longer just to book additional sessions with her.
Overall, a fantastic experience that we would gladly recommend.
- Q5419XTsamanthak (10/5): Incredible Glamping Experience - An amazing glamping experience with incredible food and views! A quick taxi boat ride over to paradise. The service was 10/10 with so much to do around.
- ChicagoBri (10/5): Legendary property - An incredible and memorable experience!
Beautiful private island with unbelievable service. Manny and Astrid were so attentive and accommodating to our group of 24 — including 8 kids between 4 and 11 years old. Celiac? They have it covered.
Rooms were lovely and modern tenting lodgings, meals were delicious for all ages. Drinks? Enjoy the best mojito I’ve ever had.
It’s in the jungle so be prepared for the late night and early morning anima parties :)
Small pool and beach favor a relaxing time on the many cabanas and hammocks when not paddle boarding or kayaking, or touring the activities nearby via boat transfer.
What a stay — hope to return one day.
- R8293OLbriant (10/5): Relaxation and adventire - Such a wonderful time relaxing between adventures. Belen, Michael, and the entire staff made sure we had the best time possible. I highly recommend visiting Isla Chiquita. Put it on your bucket list.
- 194martijnz (8/5): Top notch setting, but the hotel needs maintenance - Let's start with the positives: the scenery is top notch and the staff is extremely kind, even if some struggle a bit with English. There are very few places that can beat the setting of having breakfast right next to the sea in between the tropical trees and birds. Being woken up by howler monkeys is actually a pleasure, even if it is 4:30 in the morning.
However, for the price (which is usually over $300 a night) you expect everything to be near perfect and it definitely isn't. The beach is often polluted by plastic. I know that is not the hotel's fault, but for that price I would expect them to clean it daily at low tide because it's really unpleasant to see.
Also, the details were off. The restaurant uses sponsored and mismatched tableware (like Netflix branded table lights?) and the tents need attention. Our insect screen door was broken and the shower handle came off easily. Don't get me wrong, it is an amazing place, it is just not "$300 amazing".
- cameronq705 (10/5): Honeymoon in paradise! - The entire experience was perfect! Zero complaints from me or my wife on our honeymoon! The food was excellent! The service was amazing and the masseuse was incredible!
- O6321GKnicolef (10/5): Wonderful lomy lomy massage - I had a wonderful massage at the nimbu spa of the chiquita glamping hotel. With aroma therapy, nice oil and a good amount of pressure the masseuse understood to loosen every sore muscle in a lomy lomy massage. It was no problem to book the massage even though we weren‘t hotel guest but just visitors for the day. I can highly recommend it! Many thanks!
- ORLANDO (10/5): -
- 527maias (10/5): A Place Like No Other <3 - I could not have picked a better place to spend a week on a solo adventure to Costa Rica! Everyone at Isla Chiquita is helpful, kind, and amazing! As a solo traveler, I felt so safe and genuinely welcomed by each person I met here. The island itself is beautiful, filled with lots of cool animals and gorgeous views. Kayaking around the island, hiking the Symbiosis Trail, dining at the restaurant, enjoying the view from my tent, going on excursions with the phenomenal guides, and seeing Angie at the spa were all some of the best experiences I could have asked for on my trip!!!! I highly recommend staying at Isla Chiquita - and I cannot wait to return myself! <3
- monika (10/5): Super Personal! Tolles Essen! Preis absolut in Ordnung! -
- Diana (10/5): Amazing service. -
- Luis Alonso (10/5): - El restaurante y habitaciones excelentes
- Mateus (10/5): Perfect - Staff super atentive and friendly, amazing location easy to find, many activities Nothing it was perfect
- Gerard (10/5): - We had an amazing and unforgettable stay at Isla Chiquita for our two night stay! The property, views and staff were absolutely incredible with a special thanks to Joksan! We also did several activities including kayaking and the bioluminescence tour at night which I can only recommend! Thanks again - pura vida!
- jodyv7 (8/5): Great glamping resort - The glamping room was very nice and comfortable. There were some miscommunication issues, but they all worked out. We did a bioluminescent tour with a group across the bay and the Curu bio reserve tour. Both were great! Our tent cabin was way up the hill and walking down was a bit difficult at times, but they will transport on golf carts if you want. We asked for transport up the hill since I had a bad knee. There were only a few guests there so it was easy to use. With more guests I would think there would be wait times. The food was delicious and the staff were all great and very accommodating. Be prepared to enter their boat to transport to the island by getting in the water during low tide. The pool was nice too especially since we basically felt like we had the place to ourselves. There were small things that could be improved: the screen door didn’t shut completely, there was no bottle opener for the mini bar, the safe didn’t work until we had to call someone to come up and unlock it, and the miscommunication on our tour date was inconvenient, but ended up working out in our favor since the owner of Curu bio reserve ended up giving us a tour and it was great. All in all it was a great experience.
- RileyV25 (6/5): Great for the most part, can definitely improve, communication isn’t great, lots of mistakes that could’ve been avoided - There were issues from the beginning. I had a hard time connecting with them and not getting responses to all my questions. Our tour was booked incorrectly by them and we almost missed it, luckily one employee made sure we made it work! The room was missing obvious things like a bottle opener for the bottle in the fridge and the safe being locked and not working. It’s an amazing property but could have been better organized. Especially since it was low season and hardly anyone there, it was disappointing to deal with miscommunications and confusion. I would only recommend if you are incredibly flexible and open to last minute changes
- YURY (10/5): Paz y felicidad - La naturaleza, confort, atencion del personal, comidas, limpieza.
- leod836 (10/5): Great island hotel with exceptional feeling, attention and food! - Great hotel, great food! We went for the birthday of my girlfriend, and everything was great! We make the trail, enjoy the food, and even reserve an on the beach dinner... Everything was a great experience!
- Ernaldo (10/5): - Very nice place
- A9011HUjorgem (10/5): I really like the stay, the view and the units are very confortable. - I highly recommend the hotel, love the food and all the water sports.
My family and I have a great time during our stay, the view is amazing.
- catrionas239 (10/5): Wonderful Family stay on Isla Chiquita - We had such a wonderful stay on Isla Chiquita. The whole team were so welcoming and friendly. Nothing was too much to ask and the hospitality was second to none. The whole team made sure we were well looked after!
We loved the tent, super comfortable and really did feel very luxurious.
The island itself was fun to get to and explore once here! We kayaked, paddle boarded and walked around the island as well as doing a night time bioluminescence tour which was fab.
The kids loved the pool and we all had a great time! Will be sad to leave and would definitely recommend!

- clarecN3630VF (10/5): Amazing island glamping experience, we loved it! - Our family of four (with two teens) absolutely loved this beautiful place, situated on an a lush island, with such a relaxing atmosphere - it was the perfect place to end of our Costa Rica adventure. The staff were so super friendly and attentive, they made our stay so enjoyable. And the food… it was amazing, so fresh and delicious, with lots of choice for vegetarians and lovely fresh seafood. We ate so well! We stayed in premium tents, which were so comfortable, with stunning views, hot tub on the deck, and lovely decor - there is something so special about sleeping under canvas! We didn’t want to leave! Thank you Isla Chiquita for a fabulous stay!
Dommage !!!
- Yevgani (8/5): - We like that place in the island, nice and well organized, quiet and , located in the middle of beautiful harbor !
We didn't like the local restaurant at all! It's too expensive and no alternative around! Tourists don't have any alternative - they cannot go to any other place for dinner! Besides that, we didn't like the clearness of ocean water surround the island , it's quite dirty in the morning and nobody is taking care about it
- H8906QHlarar (10/5): Amazing place—environment, staff & experiences - An absolute gem. Such a beautiful, peaceful, happy place. The staff are exceptional, as are the experiences they facilitate.
- ardilena (6/5): They could provide better service... - I've stayed there several times, and these days they have much lower rates, so it's a good value for money. The staff is good, but I think they're following instructions from terrible management...
I think Jet Skis are not welcome...
Restaurant trop cher !
- Kathleen (10/5): Fabulous location, staff, and luxurious stay. - Loved the luxury and comfort of it, yoga mats were a great inclusion. Liked the seclusion, the location and the activities — lovely to do paddle boarding, kayaking and trail walking. The food was lovely. N/A
- Emma (7/5): Interesting concept, specifically for those looking for gateway to stress. - The tent was very well equipped. Furnished with quality stuff and good taste. The bed was extremely comfortable. Very nice breakfast. We found it a bit noisy even though the hotel is on an island. We could hear the ferry to Puntarenas and the electricity generator. The swimming pool could be a bit bigger.
- I9101AJcathyc (10/5): Luxury glamping and phosphorescent beauty! - A highlight of our Costa Rica trip. The facilities here are perfect. It was luxury glamping in every way. The phosphorescent bay boat ride was truly spectacular. There was zero light pollution in this area, so the glowing waters were stunning.
- Liz (7/5): Good -
- Jolinda (10/5): Super romantic environment, we paid for the AC and private pool. Saw monkeys! - Delish!
- Tasia (10/5): - We always enjoy Chiquita and we do bring lot of our client and family
You always have great worker
This time the breakfast quality was not that great
Then we propose the tour for the lumino to our clients 40$ per person was way deceiving for what our client saw
Then it seems that you are short in employes
Could not order drink in front of the lagoon
For sunset
Had to go at the bar
Small things that we never had to complain about before
Just saying it to help you keeping the quality standing of Chiquita
We love your place and enjoy every time
- Kuhlenschmidt (10/5): Incredible, unique, relaxing, and would come back again - This place is truly unique and special. Everything on this island is done with intention - from the incredible food from the restaurant that utilizes local ingredients and produce, to the water dispensary that is literally inside of a wood stump. The entire island is calming and magical. The staff is kind and incredible - a special shout out to tour guide Josue who is extremely knowledgeable and amazing. It was so cool to be able to take out the kayaks, paddle boards whenever. We also loved the abundance of lounge chairs and hammocks scattered across the beach area. It really felt like you were on your own island.
- Er (10/5): Special Place in the World - The Gulf of Nicoya is one of the Jewels of Costa Rica. A paradise where you can do all kinds of water activities. The island itself captures you from the moment you arrive and makes you never want to return from where you came from. We are Booking Genious travelers and I can openly say that this amazing place is a 10 out of 10. The rooms have a million dollar view.
- LindaG733 (10/5): Wonderful place to stay. - Excellent stay. We had two nights in a premier tent which had a nice cool outside tub and a stocked mini bar upon arrival, definitely worth the extra if you can stretch to it. The tent had a glorious view over the ocean which we had also booked. Super comfortable bed and nice organic bathroom items, loads of space.
Arrival was by a 5 minute boat ride and the welcome was lovely.
Restaurant beautiful overlooking the water, great food and as two vegetarians we had plenty of choice. All freshly cooked.
We did the early morning birdwatching boat trip which we thoroughly enjoyed, the guide was very good. Not as many birds as in the forest areas obviously but still lots to look at.
I had a massage which was excellent.
Would highly recommend for a relaxing break.

- zoranav128 (2/5): Limited options for exploring, the price is steep for the quality received - This is a very small island with the 18 glamping sites, the restaurant and nice beach area with canopies, and lounge chairs/tables. For me + family, this was disappointing experience.
Pro: the glamping sites are neat, and nicely distance one from another with greenery and trees so the sitting areas in front of the tent are private. The tent was fine, furniture is high quality, but the bathroom lacks light and the toilet did not have either light or door, so that was a bit uncomfortable. The included breakfast was good, and luckily for breakfast there were no reservations needed.
Cons: apart from taking tours with the hotel, there are very few things to do. The water in July was full of trash and green looking (I was told it is seasonal), and not inviting at all for swimming. We did kayaking (complimentary) and paddle board (complimentary) but that is 1h each. The walking tour was cancelled twice, so we went alone and it was muddy mess, but again 1h max. As for the hotel staff, everyone was super nice, but if you need anything it will be 45min or 1h. For fresh towel, (we stayed 3 nights and no towels were changed), they needed 1h, for getting our luggage from the reception area to the tent 5 (very close), 45min, for getting another portion of veggies in my dinner plate (have garlic allergy and even that I asked for no garlic in my meal the veggies came with garlic) 45 min. If this was some camping price place I would not have such high expectations, but the price was close to 400$ a night, and meals were about 80-90$ for 4 people.
- Vanessa (10/5): - Our stay at this property was great. We were well cared for and had the perfect mix of fun and relaxation during our say. The staff were very attentive and friendly. A big thank you to Andre and Antonio for getting us settled. We were at the hotel during a local holiday (Annexation of Nicoya) and the restaurant staff went out of their way to tell us all about the holiday and many other cultural details. During our stay we were able to use the kayaks to go around the island during the day and go on the bioluminescence tour at night. Our guides Josue and Oliver were so knowledgeable and even though we had a lot of rain during our bioluminescence tour, Josue and Oliver’s great attitudes and wealth of knowledge made it just another part of the adventure. We stayed for two nights with our two sons (8 and 12) and it was just the right amount of time to enjoy the islands flora and fauna, hotel amenities, and get some relaxation in. The highlights of our trip were the Howler Monkeys right outside our Glamping tent, the amazing staff, and seeing lighting, bioluminescence, jumping fish, and firefly’s all at the same time. All that is to say that we highly recommend this hotel. :)
- Torbjorn (10/5): - Amazing place, with wonderful staff and incredible food. Not cheap, but worth every dime.
- Denise (9/5): Beautiful setting, great service, memorable accomodations - we enjoyed it! - The customer service was exceptional, everyone was friendly and went out of their way to ensure we had a great time. My kids loved kayaking around the island and paddle-boarding; we saw rays and puffer fish! The "tents" had everything we needed, including coffee to enjoy on the balcony. They accommodated our very early departure and even packaged up our included breakfast on the go which was lovely. The restaurant is very pricey, as an example around 6 dollars for a soda. It would be nice for there to be a range of price options that started a little lower, particularly when travelling with kids. The food was very good so this is not a comment on the quality, but given that there are no other food options on the island, it does make you feel stuck.
- Jessica (10/5): - Very unique experience. Wonderful staff and food.
- Tasia (10/5): - Siempre excelente, very friendly staff
Great place
- Vincent (10/5): Exceptional -
- Randall (10/5): - Un lugar muy diferente. Tranquilo.

- Bacchgirl (10/5): Beautiful hotel, extremely kind staff - Beautiful hotel with extremely kind staff that took care of my family when my husband fell ill and needed medical care. Their kindness and assistance made saved us from a great amount of stress and unease during a difficult part of our trip.
The tent cabins were beautiful. Monkeys hanging from trees made my kids' trip. I will return.
- DebbyT (10/5): Paradise on earth - This place is as close to paradise as I can imagine! Not only is the ‘tent’ spacious and comfortable, but also feels really private, despite being close to another one. The view from the deck filled my heart every time I looked! The layout of the relaxation area with hammocks and sun beds worked really well too, all made even better by the stunning sunsets. The staff were such lovely people, cheerful and attentive. My daughter was unwell during our time there and one waiter in particular, Manuel, was so kind in preparing her healing tea and asking after her each day. It meant a lot.
Our main reason for choosing the destination was for the bioluminescence which was an incredible experience but my husband and son also went fishing from the island. The chef prepared their catch and the staff joined in with celebrating their success!
An amazing experience we will not forget.
- pureveganfood (10/5): Hidden Gem for Family Vacation - What a great weekend we had at Isla Chiquita! It was unforgettable!
We have been living in Costa Rica for a few years and love a family gateways exploring this beautiful country. Some trips lead us to mountains and waterfalls, others to hot springs, but our always favourite is to explore the islands.
Isla Jesusita is such a stunning little island in Gulf of Nicoya, we paddled all around it on kayaks and admired so much wildlife and rock formations, the most epic one is Praying Hands.
We also were mesmerized by magic of bioluminescence during night tour.
Waking up in the comfortable glamping tent with all the comfort of luxury hotel was a magic too!
I’ll never forget Hot Stone massage in the spa overlooking the ocean. So relaxing and peaceful there!
The food was incredible. We are all plant based, and all vegan creations by The Chef were truly delicious and beautifully plated!
We have already planned to come back in September for another round of bliss, adventure and relaxation!

- breeannaj2018 (10/5): Amazing, private, Costa Rica pura vida - We had the best time here for 3 nights as a family of 5. Our 3 daughters ages 11, 7, 2 had a blast. The staff is incredible and the resort has a very happy vibe. All the people that stay here are very outgoing and love to chat. We also did a private boat tour to La Isla tortuga that was one of our highlights of the stay. We stayed in the spacious master suite and it was well worth it with the extra space and wrap around porch. The food was delicious at every meal. It is glamping so be ready for the only downside was not having AC. Everything outweighs not having AC. The resort is clean and the rooms and bathrooms are nice and spacious as well as clean. We had monkeys walk over our porch and all through the trees around dusk. There were 3 momma monkeys with babies that we all enjoyed seeing. We enjoyed paddle boarding as a family. The resort arranged for us to see the bioluminescence and that was incredible at night. Everything was very easy here. We definitely recommend and will dream to return.
- Johnson (9/5): Very nice. People were excellent - Remoteness The hills although there was nothing that could be done.
- Giorgia (9/5): Sustainable tourism at its best! - We picked this hotel for their sustainable credentials and we could see once there that they tried their best to follow a much more sustainable approach. The location is just unique and the views are stunning. We gad tent 14 and it was everything and more we could ask for. The room was really comfortable and the monkeys, lizards and racoons kept us entertained! I highly recommend the spa. The massage was great with views to go with it. You order breakfast from a limited list of options. We asked to add one egg to avocado toast and the answer was: yes but you have to pay extra… we were not impressed!
If you are taking the ferry I recommend you get there one hour or more if you haven’t booked it in advance. The hotel didn’t mention this and generally I found they weren’t really good to explain things about the hotel and help with practical advice (conditions of the roads with sedan to major routes such as from Monteverde and Quepos and advice on ferry/routes).
- kiran Kumar (6/5): - It was unique experience and so was the bioluminiscence tour. It ws very hot when we visted and lack of air conditioner made it worse for us. We wanted to do a tour offered by the hotel but that was cancelled. There is an additional $60 environment fee over the regular room cost. Considering everything, I probably won't visit again.
- SmithMatt08 (10/5): One of a kind experience that shouldn't be missed - My wife and I stayed for 1 night while traveling through Montezuma to Nosara. We enjoyed the relaxed environment with limited people on the island. The service was exceptional and they catered to our every need. We took the bioluminescent tour and the experience did not disappoint. Definitely take advantage of this as the experience is memorable. The restaurant over looks the ocean and is aesthetically beautiful. We had great service and the food was delicious. Very surprised to read about some not so favorable food experiences as everything we had tasted amazing and was cooked perfectly. Maybe they corrected any issues that may have been in the past. We had ceviche, tuna, coconut shrimp, chicken sandwich, brownie dessert, and their breakfast. The tents were next level and felt like staying at a resort. We were surprised each tent had hot water and his/her sinks. Definitely a complete luxury feel. As we woke up, we had a family of monkeys cross our deck area of the tent and it was such a special moment that we will cherish forever. This is a one of a kind experience that you should not miss!
- Lawrence (10/5): A fantastic, relaxing vacation! - Staff was super patient and helpful. The meals were great. The unit was clean and comfortable.
- Brian (10/5): Phenomenal - Great experience. Service was wonder!ul. Worth the extra expense.
- Diederik (9/5): Great experience! - Great experience to sleep in a tent on a beautiful island Food was expensive for what you get. Room rate also high
- Traveling120487987 (10/5): Fantastic week of floating on the ocean and fishing - I stayed at Isla Chiquita for a week, solo, just to fish from a kayak, relax, and do very little. The place looked fantastic online, great reviews, beautiful pictures, and I went in with high expectations.
I was still pleasantly surprised. I'm in the tourism business, so I know how much work it is to create an experience.
First off, "glamping" is a bit misleading. The tents are about 400 square feet with a full bathroom and pretty much every amenity you'd find in a hotel room. The housekeeping is impeccable. The space between tents is strategically maintained to break line of sight, so you have a surprising amount of privacy.
The staff are incredibly friendly. Speaking almost no Spanish, I was a bit concerned. Xavier, at the front desk, was a consistent English-speaking presence who was always keen to help out, trade fishing stories, and suggest other things to try given my miserable luck of actually catching the big ones.
And the food! The oysters on the menu are literally from the oyster farm across the bay. The mahi mahi isn't just "catch of the day," it's literally caught that day. And if you're looking for even more authentic, if you catch a fish, they'll turn it into your dinner, with fried plantains and salad and all the rest for $10.
My one consistent issue was with availability of kayaks. I'd booked with the explicitly-stated purpose of floating in a kayak and fishing. I'd confirmed that this was possible pretty much all day, every day. I was told it was.
The first day I went to borrow a kayak, I was told I wouldn't be allowed to use one to fish out of. I followed up with several people. I was told the manager was in a meeting, but they'd ask, and within a few hours, I was told that no, the rule stands, I would not be allowed to use a kayak to fish.
....what?
I told them I'd be checking out, given that I had it in writing that I'd be able to do that, and that it was the ENTIRE point of my trip. As I was packing my things and looking for a nearby place to rent, I got the call. The manager had relented, and I'd be allowed to fish from a kayak. Which was GREAT news, because I was already in love with the place.
Over the course of the next week, I noticed the general trend that at almost random times, people would be told they can't borrow a kayak. Why not? It was never explained. Or that it was too windy to go out past the buoys, when the water was almost entirely flat, we were on the lee side of the island, and if you went to the other side, the wind would push you right back to shore.
This turned into a considerable frustration for myself and others, but honestly, not enough of one to deduct a star.
But aside from that, I can't say enough good things about every aspect of this place!
- SarchasmHopper (8/5): Unusual and low key experience - We went to Isla Chiquita to celebrate my birthday. We have lived in Costa Rica for many years, and noted a few outstanding things, and some things that were a bit disappointing.
The tents are very comfortable. We have glamped in other places, and Isla Chiquita excels in tent structure and amenities. The placement of the tents provide for optimum privacy between lodging sites. Yes the paths are steep, but the staff is friendly and never hesitated to give us a ride in the quiet electric golf carts.
The activity center has kayaks and stand up paddle boards for guest use, and making a paddle around the island is delightful. We stopped at a private, secluded beach on the opposite side of the island, and enjoyed seeing spotted eagle rays up close.
It was disappointing that any other activity was prohibitively expensive to book, atop exorbitant lodging costs. Some of the food was tasty, other not so much. To their credit, the staff heard our complaints about food that was not good, and worked hard to resolve the problem. On booking, we were told that special needs such as gluten free food were not a problem, and there were indeed choices listed on the menu. However at each meal the menu option was not available, and other arrangements had to be made.
The pool option is very limited, (there is a small, single depth above-ground area which was too deep for my height) and there are warning signs about entering the ocean due to rip currents. Therefore we only had the option of sitting on the lawn (more shade toldos would be nice) or on our deck, no playing in the water.
The island is quiet and relaxing if one likes reading or napping, and the Wi-Fi works well.
