Guest Reviews
- Helen (5/5): -
- Jan (7/5): - loud permanent low frequency noise in the room.
- Rob (9/5): A beautiful and unique hotel in a beautiful city. - My room was right at the top of this converted church and really beautiful and unusual. Facilities were very good and the bed very comfy. Breakfast delicious.
- Judy (10/5): - All of it Not applicable
- Mary B (8/5): Ryan and his staff were very welcoming and took great care in fulfilling any requests that I had. It - One of the best Eggs Benedict that I have had.
- Katie (8/5): - Friendly, helpful staff, great food.
- Michael (3/5): Very disappointing. - The location is excellent. Shrewsbury is a pleasant town. We were very disappointed in the St. Nicholas Boutique Hotel which is located in a remodeled church in the pleasant town of Shrewsbury. Although we had hoped to eat in the restaurant, it was closed for dinner (despite online signs to the contrary) and the sole staff member left for the evening - although he said we could call him if we had problems. Thus, it is not hotel, but an Air B&B, without the second B. Rooms were clean, but poorly planned and indifferently renovated. The toilet seat was detached, for example, and little to no thought had been given to installing the shower so that it did not intrude into the rest of the bathroom. Water for the shower was activated by pulling an unmarked string; no instructions provided. We cannot recommend the hotel.
- NICK (3/5): , absolutely NO views whatsoever as windows were covered with an obscured adhesive film!! - Location The room was NOTHING like the arched roof on the photo and that I had paid more for ,to ensure a better experience and city views!!
I was extremely disappointed as this was supposed to be a lovely break for my partner.
- Colin (3/5): never again - The location is excellent and the one member of staff we met was very helpful. Outside the property is dirty with endless cigarette ends; it is not welcoming.
The bed was awful; we hardly slept at all.
The shower was awful; it was an old fashioned mixer tap.
the furniture was uncomfortable and was some very eclectic mixes of styles.
We stayed two nights and house keeping did not even turn up.
no glasses in the room.
from the sofa you could not see the TV.
There was no information pack about the locale; restaurants, places of interest, trips, etc.
No food or coffee available in the morning until 8.30 am.
no parking.
- Luke (10/5): -
- Nia (2/5): - Beautiful building Cheap finnish of rooms
- Lisa (8/5): Good break, quirky accommodation and great location - Quirky - converted church
- Dennis (7/5): - Excellent location, a few minutes away from the train station and town centre. Staff were all really friendly and helpful, from the young man at the door on arrival through to the staff we met on departure. Looking a little tired in places.
- Nicola (5/5): -
- Rachael (8/5): -
- Magc15 (10/5): A little peice of history with a modern twist - Beautiful building that kept original features from its previous life as a church! Quite, clean, very central location with train station, shops, food places and local points of interest all within a stones throw away. That we didnt stay longer
- Bev (8/5): Easy no hastle stay - Great location friendly staff Character
- Mark (10/5): -
- Steven (9/5): Very good experience and would stay here again - Very quirky and beautiful Nothing bad to say
- Lorraine (8/5): -
- Nathan Evans (9/5): Exceptional - DO NOT STAY HERE IF YOU LIKE STAYING UP ALL NIGHT (sleep is 1Million% guaranteed)
The mattress was exceptionally comfy to the point where me and my wife fell asleep straight away which says something due to my wife having fibromyalgia she struggles to sleep
Bathroom was great
Complimentary drinks in fridge and tea and coffee available
Clean carpets
Great embroidered towels Bath was thin but ok to use if a thin person and shower was good also
TV had no channels but was smart TV
Pillows were thinner than ours at home but did sleep well
Was very warm even tho radiators were off
Doesn't have Aircon (maybe a fan in each room)
For the price we paid £140 would've been better if breakfast was included but either way we enjoyed our stay and would gladly visit again
- scott (10/5): -
- Robert Byron (6/5): Nice for a short stay - Good location Breakfast not so good
- Michelle (10/5): Great value - enjoyed the stay - Unique and clean
- Graham (8/5): -
- Ranger Long (10/5): What a delight! - The property is beautiful. Our room was large and comfortably furnished with kettle and refrigerator. The location was perfect. The food at the restaurant was delicious. The best thing about the St. Nicholas was the staff. The staff were absolutely outstanding. So friendly and helpful. The owner Ash was the BEST. Would stay there again and again.
- Robert (10/5): Great location and a decent price. Staff great - Quirky hotel still with the features of the church Bathrooms a little small but functional
- Tim (10/5): - Good location, good price, big room, comfortable bed, good shower, very good breakfast Nothing, we love it
- Rosemary (8/5): Excellent location , staff and breakfast but small room for three night stay. - Intriguing building in an excellent location. Staff were excellent - kind, courteous and helpful. Breakfast was also excellent. The double room was narrow with little space for clothes. No space for a chair in the room.
- Adam (5/5): Over sold - Location Tired. Rooms very basic. 2 star
- Russell (8/5): -
- Brendan (10/5): Awesome Shrewsbury stopover - Fabulous stopover at St Nicholas, very comfortable room.
Ideally located for exploring Shrewsbury.
We opted for a Sunday dinner there while waiting for train, it was an awesome dinner. All excellent
- richard (7/5): A lively place full of character - Great Location. Friendly staff. Staff smoking by the front door meant our first impression on arrival was not the best as the lobby and stairs smelt of cigarettes.
The round window in the top floor room on the right was jammed shut so we were unable to get fresh air to cool the room on a warm day.
- Steve (10/5): -
- Vikki Haines (9/5): - Fantastic gem of a hotel, staff so helpful and room "Queen Victoria" was just perfect
- Ferguson (10/5): Wonderful hotel in the heart of Shrewsbury - Amazing well sized breakfast with quality food. Excellent customer care throughout and perfect location for visiting Shrewsbury and very near train station.
- Matthew (6/5): Great location. Clean, quiet, expensive but convenient. - Nice, warm, clean quiet little room high up in a converted church. Very expensive for what it is though. Shame about the hatchet job done in the bathroom to accommodate part of the original pillar. The owners will know what I mean. Food options were limited and overpriced too, so we went out of town instead. The location is perfect though - it's a short walk from the town and station - practically next door to the castle/museum. Surrounded by ancient, beautiful buildings. Easy to check in and pop back and fore when needed. There's no channels on the TV because it's a listed property - but good wi-fi, and I managed to pair my phone with the TV for casting streamed content. Expensive for what it was. We'd maybe stay here again if a full English breakfast was included in the price.
- Antony (7/5): -
- lee (10/5): - Location and staff were brilliant Leaving. I could of stayed there another night
- stephen (8/5): Would stay again - Location was great Traffic noise but it was expected in the location so didn’t bother us too much
- Harris (10/5): -
- Steve (10/5): Lovely place, lovely staff and grea location - Fantastic hotel. Staff were all great as well
- Mel (10/5): - Everything, the staff were very attentive nothing too much trouble, very polite and friendly wuth a welcoming atmosphere. The food was exceptional. And the hotel is absokutely beautiful. Lkvely and clean. Would higjly recommend and would most definately stay again. Thankyou There was nothing not to like.
- Derek (8/5): - It is beautifully located in the centre of Shrewsbury 2minute walk into centre No parking but parked opposite the prison tour only 6.50 for 24hours and a five minute walk across the bridge along the castle wall above the train station
- Lisa (9/5): Very pleased - Perfect location, in the town.
Comfortable bed and spacious room.
- Jennifer (5/5): Was disappointed as gas was off no water no heating. Staff blaze about curtains x. Heater in room not working so not goo - Location No hot water no heating curtains falling down x
- Guest (4/5): -
- Liz (10/5): Lovely stay in a unique building - Unique - loved the windows and high ceilings. Staff attentive and friendly. Really appreciated the little fridge in the room.
- Adam (8/5): Comfortable and clean short stay! - The room was great and worked perfectly for one night. Getting to the 3rd floor wasnt possible via lift. Due to needing a key.
And it was a maze to find when you got off at 2.
The lack of parking isnt the hotels fault but is an issue if you travel that way and are new to Shrewsbury.
- Philip (10/5): -
- PaulH73 (10/5): Excellent stay - Excellent location right next to the castle 5 min walk from the centre. Room was really nice loved the stain glass windows be worried about temperature in freezing conditions but must say the room was really warm . Nothing everything was excellent
- Katherine (8/5): -
- Andrew (9/5): -
- Anthony (10/5): - The staff were excellent, communication was great and they went above and beyond to make our stay fantastic.
- Julie (10/5): Perfect in every way. - The breakfast was not included in the price but was excellent. The location was superb opposite the historical library and a short 5-10 walk to town. Fabulous service at St Nicholas’s - kindly upgraded us as it was our 47th wedding anniversary. Evening meal was also delicious. Fantastic history and our Dom Perignon room stained glass window was stunningly beautiful. Very memorable. Just s couple of glasses would have been lovely for the cold drinks but otherwise perfect. A real gem,
- Ashley (5/5): Amazing building and location let down by no running hot water or solution. - The building is amazing and really well located in the town. Easily within walking distance of everything and close to the train station. Unfortunately, we had no running hot water for the entirety of our stay, which meant we were unable to wash properly. When we alerted the hotel on arrival, we were told the boiler was being serviced and that hot water would be available within a couple of hours.
When we returned later that evening, there was still no hot water. We waited until the morning, but the issue persisted. I sent a text message to both contact numbers provided in the room but received no reply from either(still haven't).
At checkout, I raised the issue again. I was met with blank looks and told that various tradespeople had been on-site the previous day. There was no apology and no offer of a different room to use for washing. We were offered a complimentary breakfast, but we had to decline this as we had prior plans.
It was incredibly disappointing to spend the weekend unable to shower. I messaged the property again via Booking.com to request a partial refund but received no response. Booking.com eventually provided a 10% credit as a gesture of goodwill.
The hotel itself is lovely, and we would have been very happy with our stay had the basic facilities worked. It is a real shame that no effort was made to resolve the situation or communicate with us effectively.
- Roberta (10/5): Great escape - Location and friendly staff Rooms were warm
- Mark (8/5): Highly recommend. - The food is excellent. Very slight problem which the staff sorted. The two lads running the hotel were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The location is ideal. A nice quirky hotel. That’s worth eating in as well (which is rare for a hotel) As mentioned in the review there was a slight issue out of the hands of the staff but they rectified it and were friendly and courteous about it.
- Delaney (10/5): - Great location . Central to everything . Great staff . Ash the owner made sure we had everything needed and went above and beyond . Will definitely be coming here again . Food was 10/10 . Faultless
- penny (5/5): - Friendly host very helpful, location, look of hotel from outside Inside was more like a premier inn, a real shame with such a lovely building, very noisy room host did explain that beautiful stain glass windows were very old but no sound proofing at all so lot of noise, bathroom smelt horrid at times
- Laura Jane (9/5): Birthday getaway - Warm welcome Ryan and his team provide a fabulous venue for a stay in Shrewsbury. They have complimented original features with comfortable rooms with modern facilities, there is even a lift to the top floor. This boutique hotel also has a bar and restaurant serving a delicious breakfast ad meals/ drinks throughout the day. We will return and recommend to friends and family xxx
- Daniel (10/5): Who doesn't love a converted church! - This hotel is an amazing little find. Really beautiful decor and interior. We stayed in the top floor room and it was spacious and clean with a great stained glass window (which was a bit draughty but it was expected for a converted church).
The staff were really helpful and friendly, and the breakfast was really high quality.
Excellent location.
- Nick (9/5): -
- Nicola (9/5): Wonderful - The property was lovely. Stained glass windows. Bedroom nice and bright. Lovely breakfast on the morning. Helpful staff. Great location. Bathroom wasn’t as clean as it could be. Very dusty.
- Dave Redford (8/5): -
- Helen (6/5): Could be a great place but it needs updating - Really quirky.
Staff were lovely and the breakfast was excellent. The bedrooms need a refresh. The bed was really uncomfortable and the bedding needa upgrading. It was absolutely freezing as the heating was not on and very drafting as the doors to outside were wide open
- Shaun (8/5): Nice location & historic building, and good value. - Location was perfect. Nice historic building. Comfortable room. Had to repair heater thermostat as it had unscrewed, carpet did not appear vacuumed very well, lift has a very strange operating method - the staff said to operate you need to love a magnet on the face of the panel.
- Steven (10/5): Will stay again. - The staff were amazing, very attentive and nothing was too much for them.
The room was perfect for the price and the building was pretty cool.
If youve had a drink and youre staying on the top floor use the lift 😅 the stairs sent me dizzy! The windows in our room were old stain glass, although one of them looked like it would be ok to open i didnt want to risk breaking it, i can imagine on a hot day it could be a struggle in that room. However it didnt ruin our experience.
- Huw (5/5): -
- Sue (8/5): Excellent location for an overnight stay. Good value for money and a very comfortable room - The hotel was quirky being an old church.
The staff were very helpful and friendly
The hotel was ideally situated very close to the station and between the station and the town centre No bar service early evening and a rather unusual way to operate the lift
- Katrina (7/5): Perfect location for the town, food was excellent. - Beautiful building set at the beginning of the high street area. Perfect for wandering around the town. Food was very good! We had both evening meal and breakfast. Noisy of an evening, music playing till 11.30. No atmosphere in the bar area.
- Hannah (5/5): -
- Jenny (10/5): Lovely stay, comfortable, clean and brilliant location. Will definitely return. - This was a beautiful property.
- Ciaran (7/5): -
- David (8/5): -
- Peter (8/5): - Location..free water and fizzy drinks in fridge. Small window no view.
- Leigh (10/5): -
- Leigh (10/5): -
- Janet (8/5): - Fantastic location if you’re arriving by train. Room true to images on website. Old fashioned but with a certain charm. Small bathroom. Very helpful and polite staff.
- Donna (9/5): -
- Raymond (7/5): The best hotel in Shrewsbury - Great location, clean The bar/restaurant was shut in the early evening
- Gerasimos (9/5): - Kind staff, fantastic location Bathroom was a bit tight but overall functional
- Matthew (10/5): Comfortable, good value for money - Perfect, central location. Friendly staff. Comfortable bed
- Linda (8/5): Great for a short, quick stay! - Ambiance
Value for money
In room facilities
Location No receptacle in shower for holding shower gel!!
Lack of parking
"Clutter" outside
- Michael (10/5): - Great location. Close to the town centre and close to the railway station. Staff were courteous and helpful. Spacious comfortable rooms. N/A
- Dan (10/5): -
- Damian (8/5): - Ideal location for the town centre and railway station. The room was comfortable and quiet.
- Ian (4/5): Great location. Cheaply done - Good location. Could do so much more with the building. Feels like it’s been done on the cheap Cobwebs. Dirty shower. Tv doesn’t work. Poor WiFi.
- Maria (7/5): Staff was trying its best to help. By Shrewsbury standards it is good but I will not stay there next time. - It is a very old historical building not easy to maintain. It was very clean with a nice small shower room. The room was definitely not 20 m2 as in the website . It was may be 12 incl the shower. It was a tiny place just enough for 1 person. No space for table, wardrobe, no hanger, no place for the luggage. It was an old window mosaic, not windows as such. Very old and dirty. I could hear everything on the street. Not possible to close the windows properly. To have them clean would help I guess.
- Martin (6/5): Great location, friendly welcome, comfortable rooms - Beautiful building and great location Obviously being an old church you feel the cold
- Stuart (10/5): -
- Richard (10/5): -
- Trevor (10/5): Perfect in every way - Our room was perfect , cosy, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent. Checkout time at 11 am was very convenient Nothing
- joanne bamber (10/5): -
- Donna (8/5): Great stay in a beautiful building - This was a beautiful building in a perfect location right next to the castle we planned to visit. We managed to check in early which was great. The building was old but well heated. We enjoyed a beautiful breakfast which was reasonably priced. The staff were pleasant and amenable. Not a complaint more an observation on the bar choice… Lager choice was limited to Camden draught and the pump was broken. There wasn’t a bottled alternative however they offered to send out for some, we had plans so couldn’t wait. Later the lads tried again but weren’t impressed with the draught on offer… and the bottle choice was non alco…maybe stock a wider choice of lager? Just a suggestion to maximise profit..but not a deal breaker for us
- Jennifer (8/5): - It was very clean, staff so helpful.
Breakfast good value and delicious. I think it looked better from outside, sympathetic ally developed.
Just didn't quite work for me.
- Amanda (5/5): Location - Location was great. Large comfy bed. On arrival the first thing that hit me were the curtains which were hanging off the rails. The space was large but lacked the deluxe feel as advertised. No pictures on the walls, dated furniture.
- Sharon (10/5): -
- Paul (8/5): -
- Simon (4/5): Good but flawed - It’s a lovely building and well designed My wife thinks she left a spongebag. Despite a phone call and messages via booking.com we have had no response which I consider poor service.
Otherwise it was lovely
