Guest Reviews
- Ray (10/5): Great location and excellent staff - A great location. All of the staff were professional and very helpful. We were particularly impressed by Amanda who worked so hard and sorted out the issue with our booking Nothing- we really enjoyed our stay
- Alice (8/5): Historic building, short drive from Castle Howard - Nice historic building. Easy to walk into town. Sunday roast!! No fridge in room. Bar very loud on Sunday
- Wayne (3/5): - Location and cleanliness No remote for TV and shower inadequate for what I expected
- Alan (8/5): Very good location for cycle tour of the Wolds - The room was a good size and dinner and breakfast were very good.
The hotel was an excellent location as part of my cycle tour of the Wolds. Car parking was very good. I was in the annex which wasn't as close to the main hotel as I would have liked - tricky storing the bike and moving between annex and hotel.
- Christine (4/5): The staff were lovely. The room was very very small and the music was extremely loud. I don’t think it was worth the mon - The location of the property was nice The room we were allocated was very small. Although we were emailed before arrival to inform us there was a function and music would be playing, we didn’t realise the music would be right below our bedroom and it was so loud the walls of our room were vibrating.
- Graham (7/5): Probably not again - Nice grounds
Good location Mediocre breakfast
Not much heating
- Basim (10/5): -
- Philip (9/5): Beautiful building and grounds, excellent location. - Excellent location, a few minutes' walk from bars, restaurants. Free parking. Beautiful building and grounds.
- Alex (10/5): Outstanding - Everything Nothing
- Peter (8/5): -
Baren koselig. Dårlig renhold rom. Ikke støvsugd. Dårlig frokost. Mugget brød gammel ost og frukt.
- Michael (4/5): Expected better for the price - Nice grounds & a historic building Carpark was like a builders yard & scaffolding around the building - which in itself wasn’t a problem but we were told the builders didn’t start until 8.30am , which would have been fine - but in fact they started at 7.30am & we woke to find a stonemason & scaffolder working outside our bedroom window.
So we had to bathe & dress with the curtains closed so couldn’t enjoy any of the views & tranquillity.
In addition, wasps kept appearing from the bathroom light fitting

- Ray (10/5): A perfect place capturing the essence of yesteryear. - The Old Lodge is a beautiful place set in acres of lush green countryside. Car parking is ample, friendly staff, rooms clean and comfortable, and the food is excellent. If you like olde world charm, this place has everything. There is no shortage of things to do in Malton, with a great concert venue in The Milton Rooms. There was nothing not to like,
- Charlie (1/5): -
- Cheryl (8/5): - Location great very friendly staff and food was very good grounds very well maintained Looking a little tired and dated in places and had a slight sewer smell in bathroom shower wasnt very powerful but overall we had a great stay
- Guest (8/5): -
- gary (9/5): -
- Graham (7/5): - Staff first class, good value Building under major repair, and very tired
- Dawn (8/5): -
- David (7/5): - Lovely location Saggy bed, creaky floorboards!
- Elaine (2/5): Website says 4* but 3* hotels we stayed in this trip,Harrogate,Goathland,&Saltaire where much better - Didn't have the breakfast because we hsd been so disappointed with the room The decor shabby & tired & was something from the 60s. The radiator didn't work in the bedroom. The lamp didn't work. The other lighting was very dim. The shower was very weak & the TV was from the turn of the century plus the hotel is a building sire with scaffolding outside our bedroom window. Had to go to reception for the WiFi & at check-in weren't told about the building works outside our window. This is not a 4* hotel & the website is very misleading
- le-roi-des-cons (10/5): An elegant gem undergoing careful restoration - This is an elegant and striking building which is undergoing extensive refurbishment and renovation. The buildings and rooms are full of character. You will see signs of the work on the exterior of the building during your stay. However, the character of the property makes it well worth a visit despite this minor inconvenience. It is clear that the new owners are determined to make a thorough and professional job of this long-term project.
In addition, the service throughout our stay was nothing short of exceptional : a special mention to Lucy in the Reception area who was welcoming, charming and unfailingly helpful.
- Rachael (10/5): We would definitely book again. - We loved the historic old building and had been there for a family function several years ago but hadn’t stayed. The rooms were large and the beds comfy. The staff were welcoming when we turned up early, they said our rooms were ready and let us check in. Breakfast was made to order so the food was freshly cooked and hot. Although we did not have an evening meal there the menu looked appealing.
- John (6/5): - Location Stairs were quite a challenge for my wife
- George (5/5): -
- Karen (10/5): - lovely friendly staff great location views lovely food good room clean & comfortable.
- Foreman (6/5): Comfortable 'historic' venue and stay but certainly not 4* - Lovely gardens, we had a downstairs garden room which had a lovely sitting space that faced onto the gardens. Staff seemed very friendly and helpful. The hotel bar has a good atmosphere. It is an easy walk down the hill into the centre of Malton. The room was comfortable, but, like many of the reviews here, the cleanliness wasnt great. We came home from a day out in York, to find that housekeeping had been in (tea and buiscuits replaced! which is how we knew!) but the bed wasnt made, the cushions not plumped; bins not emptied - It was pretty poor! I did complain (nicely) to the front desk, and they were very receptive to the feedback and they did offer us a free drink at the bar, but it was certainly not a 4* service. If it had been me on reception, I would have popped back to our room and made the bed myself - and certainly offered more than just a free drink. Our table at breakfast was dirty, as was the crockery. It was more like a 3* hotel and service...
- Julia (8/5): An interesting and historic building which was a pleasure to visit. Well worth a return stay - Fairly central position and is within walking distance of the town. Has a good bar and restaurant Unfortunately the building is having new roofing so dusty from the works and view interrupted by scaffolding which is no one’s fault as these works are necessary

- L5259QRalexw (10/5): Super service central to the North Yorkshire moors and a lovely stay the home made chocolate & Cadbury cream is a must - Excellent service the staff are so friendly
The food was very good in the restaurant simple menu but affordable and effective
- Howard (1/5): No contact to tell us we couldn’t stay. Wasted journey! - We arrived and was told that they couldn’t let us stay as there was no other person on site overnight and it wouldn’t be covered by insurance
- Alex (10/5): Staff very friendly the home made cake was super and the food was very nice and the location central - The lodge was very historic and interesting Nothing
- Michael (8/5): Great stay - The old charm Nothing
- Amy (10/5): - Lovely staff, very accommodating. Friendly and helpful.
- Lewis (10/5): -
- Andy-Triker (4/5): Very disappointed - Had an overnight stay with my wife to celebrate my birthday. Stayed in room 14, first impression when opening the door, the room was vary dated, this room has not recently been refurbished, the paintwork was gruby and marked, the room was drab, we nevertheless unpacked , and had a cup of tea, half hour later the floorboards were creaking make a hell of a noise as someone moved in next door, we could hear everything the said, we could hear them go to the toilet, all night we could hear them turn over in bed, did not sleep very much all night. We went down for breakfast, our room number was also our table number, our table was next to another table with a dog the size of a Shetland pony, this dog smelled awful, and was banging against my seat, I got up and moved table, this made me and my wife feel very, very uncomfortable, but I could not sit and eat my breakfast while a massive dog, that stunk, was banging against my chair.
The breakfast took 3/4 of an hour to arrive, but to be fair, was very nice.
I know you said the place was dog friendly, but to have them in the restaurant is a NO for me. It is a large place you need to sort a separate room for guests with dogs,
The other small thing, there was no toilet brush in the toilet, why, not sure, I know you can say you do not mind cleaning when you clean the room, but I like to leave the toilet for my wife to come into as clean as possible.
The price for an overnight stay is not cheap, I expected a lot more when I looked at the Web site, the rooms look a lot nicer than the one we stayed in, obviously selected the nicer rooms for the advertisement.
- Mulder (6/5): - De bedden waren goed! Ontbijt was matig tot slecht!
- Sarah (5/5): poor sleep due to noise - Breakfast was good Bedroom was cramped, decor in room not very good.
Could hear noise from other guests.
Large dog in dining room at breakfast, didn't know hotel was dog friendly.
- David (5/5): - Great location. Comfortable bed and the breakfast was fantastic. When i checked in the room was freezing and the heating wasn't working. Staff checked the thermostat and told me to leave the heating on. I went out for the evening expecting the problem to be fixed. When I went back to my room after midnight, it was still cold. I slept fully clothed under the duvet and blanket and was still cold. It's a shame because everything else was perfect
- Dean (10/5): stuff went above & beyond & incredibly friendly also spend time to talk & share story’s also it’s lovely dog - booking . com it’s under going works currently which it must clearly need but i wasn’t aware @ the time of booking but it didn’t affect are stay in anyway.. just the pictures we taken outside but it’s understandable a building of its history needs tlc..
- Julie (10/5): - Nice setting and full of character Nothing
- Dawid (5/5): Really lovely staff, good location in Malton. In desperate need of some renovation. - The location, the outside of the property is stunning. Good parking. The lady on reception was very attentive and friendly. Unfortunately the rooms are very outdated, the bed was very uncomfortable with clear signs of wear and tear. It does not feel or look like a 4* hotel.
- Luke (5/5): -
- David (10/5): - Everything staff was lovley room was stunning and close to the centre Nothing
- Julie (9/5): Amazing period property in beautiful gardens - Room was dog friendly with a lovely view over the garden they have a cosy bar although we didn’t eat this time we have in the past and the food is lovely location perfect very central plenty of parking we will definitely be returning for another visit
- SADIA (10/5): Nice hotel - Stunning building
- Julie (10/5): Lovely Location and Beautiful Rooms - Central Location friendly staff / clean and comfortable / Beautiful period property amazing rooms Nothing
- Albert (8/5): -
- Sharon (5/5): - Beautiful old building and great staff Tired room, unpleasant smell in the bathroom and way too hot!
- Alison (8/5): Another stay at our Wedding venue - On arrival we were upgraded to a room in the main building by the lovely lady on reception. The room was great and had the largest bathroom I’ve ever seen! Nothing.
- Graham (10/5): Excellent hotel for a short relaxing break breathtaking old building - Lovely breakfast both days comfortable rooms excellent friendly staff Access issues due to problem with perimeter wall but that's all
- Stephen (9/5): Lovely break and really enjoyed our stay. - Very friendly staff, the hotel had lots of character with a lovely, comfortable bar and was a five minute walk to Malton. I had no issues at all and would stay again.
- saranL5230XR (10/5): Opulent and Affordable. - We booked The Old Lodge for valentine's weekend as a special trip. We could not have been more satisfied with our stay, the building itself is teeming with history, grandeur and charm, the gardens are well kept and magical, the communal areas also clean and inviting. We were blown away by the featured room we had booked, I don't think I've ever had a night so relaxing and elegant for such a reasonable price. Breakfast was complete and delicious, with excellent service to boot. We had the pleasure of chatting to the owners of the hotel, who proved themselves to be the most gracious of hosts with their pleasant conversation. Their investment in the respiration of the property is clear, alongside their commitment in engaging with the local community. I truly look forward to seeing how the lodge thrives under their care, and eagerly anticipate our next visit!
- Karen (9/5): - Staff very friendly Room 18 was very strong smell of radiator liquid
- Dan (9/5): -
- Liam (10/5): -
- Susan (8/5): -
- Shelley (10/5): -
- Andrew (8/5): -
- Mike (7/5): I would stay again - Hotel and surrounding countryside beautiful. Staff very welcoming and friendly. It was disappointing that on my arrival after a long drive that no hot food was available and I was told there was a school prom being hosted, so I had to find some food in the village. However during breakfast the manager explained that the chef was on holiday and this was the only week in the year they couldn't cover cooking. I would recommend this information should be communicated prior so visitors can make other arrangements for food.
Also rooms could do with AC, it was a very hot night and the fan is really not adequate.
- Stephen (9/5): Nice hotel, would definitely return, breakfast was nice and staff were very friendly. - Great breakfast and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Very hard water area, the shower heads could do with descaling.
- Giles (7/5): - Did not have breakfast. It was good location geographically but lest rural than I expected. On a hot night a sheet and blanket would have been better than a duvet. One could have gone to sleep with just a sheet and pulled the blanket up if needed in the early hours.
- Peter (9/5): -
- Paul (9/5): -
- Elise (5/5): Loved the staff and it's a shame that such a beautiful building woth so much potential is being left - Fantastic location, amazing building and great staff. Beautiful setting. No wifi in the room. Dark and depressing decor. Miss matched uncomfortable furniture.
- Wendy (8/5): - Ease of booking Extra charge for breakfast because of staying in the annex
- John (5/5): -
- Andrew (10/5): -
- Brendan (8/5): Great for my needs on this trip. Thanks. - Great for my needs on this trip. Thanks. Cobwebs! Stains on carpet :(

- Louise Younger (7/5): -
- Sarah (9/5): Lovely place to stay, would recommend. - Lovely accommodation in the centre of Malton, great secure parking area. Grounds were lovely with outdoor seating area. Room was roomy and very comfortable, the bathroom was huge! Breakfast was lovely and the staff were very friendly
- mark (4/5): This property has great potential but our new year’s celebration was spoiled. - Beautiful location and building with very friendly and helpful staff. Also a cosy, inviting bar area. Our first room was infested with ladybirds so we were moved to a second room, but this had an appalling smell of drains. An embarrassed but friendly staff member then explained there was one other option. This room had single beds rather than the double we wanted and more ladybirds but these were dead and cleared away on request. The rooms had clearly not been cleaned on this day. In addition all 3 rooms were very cold.
- suzy1978 (10/5): - Big room lovely building inside and friendly atmosphere. I would stay again if in the area didn't get chance to go around town bein new yr eve/day but it was beautiful Nothing
- Adam Renshaw (10/5): Friendly staff, beautiful place - Breakfast was lovely and came fast , we had the vegetarian full English Maybe needs a little modernization in the rooms but didn’t affect how nice our stay was
- Mark (7/5): Excellent - perfect for what we wanted and very friendly and helpful staff - Booked late - very welcoming, and characterful building Room a little tired
- Andrew (9/5): Excellent Christmas stay over - Annual stay at the hotel. A nice quite hotel with facilities we enjoy near the town centre In our opinion nothing not to like. The property is old maintenance is important to keep standards up.
- Richard P (10/5): -
- Andrew (10/5): Excellent and relaxing stay. - The staff were extremely polite and welcoming. Room was amazing and melas excellent. All was a good experience, cannot complain about anything. Would recommend it to friends and family.

- Janice (8/5): -
- ed (9/5): Great - Beautiful place with lovely big room.
- Sarah (9/5): Christmas Beak - Perfect overnight stay in this beautiful, atmospheric old building.
We were fortunate to receive a free upgrade to a stunning room in the main building.
We had a few drinks in the bar, which had a lovely open fire and cosy atmosphere.
Staff were all lovely, helpful and on hand.
Close proximity to Malton for drinks and food.
We were able to leave our car at the hotel pre check in which was good.
- Sean (7/5): - Gorgeous building Shower wasn't great low water pressure and a little tired
- Bastow (10/5): -
- Elizabeth (2/5): Needs tlc, new doors - Loved the building and location Needs a lot of work, bucket left in hallway to collect water for leaky roof, dated carpets and furnishings, noisy. Sounded like someone was trying to get into my room, could hear everything, I could not stay the night due to this so I found a room elsewhere. Poor lighting. No pulley on bathroom light switch, had to jump to get the wire as I'm short.
- Michelle (10/5): - This place is beautiful, the staff were wonderful and the bed so comfortable Everything was fine
