Guest Reviews
- Kevin301 (8/5): Lovely hotel and very conveniently located. Some improvements needed though. - I spent a night at Muo Boutique Hotel to explore the charming town of Muar and all the delicious food. The hotel is conveniently located around the food and cultural district, a short walk from the famous Muar Street Art as well as the popular food street Jalan Haji Abu.
The hotel has a beautiful retro vibe. Very tastefully decorated with retro pieces of furniture whilst still feeling quite modern.
There were some gripes about the room though:
1) My "queen + single" room felt a little cramped. Also, there was a lack of places to place loose items such as car key, wallet, phone etc, especially around bedside for charging. Had to use the provided stool.
2) The bathroom tiles were slippery when wet, and therefore I would strongly advise groups with seniors to reconsider staying here.
3) The tap was faulty and kept leaking water. Due to the water pressure it caused a 'hammering' sound as the water leaked. I put it down to a poor quality faucet.
- Shahenaz (8/5): - Family premium room had no windows but my kids love it. Love the aesthetics of the hotel. Very quaint and unique! Rooftop is a nice place to sit and talk with family.our room had a loft with single bed however spotted several mosquitoes. The steps to the loft in our room needs some repair as some of the wood chips are coming off and can be quite dangerous.
- weiminn2018 (6/5): Poorly maintained hotel. - We booked this with high expectations as it was set in an old building and quite well rated. The rooms are rather small and equally small Bathroom.
Service staff is minimalist, only one. No cafe. Appears to be set up the market their in-house merchandise.
The sewage smell in the lobby and in the lift lobby is awful. Door latch broke off and no replacement.
Finally the premium room on the street side is noisy and guess what, they provide you free earplugs at the front desk!
- Ricky (10/5): - It's a very nice cozy hotel. My family had a great stay during the weekend
- JackChee11 (10/5): Instagrammable Hotel In A Hard To Beat Location - I was on a 3 days trip here in Muar, which I had stayed a night each at MUO Resort and MUO Boutique Hotel. Both properties are managed by the same company. To compare, Muo Boutique Hotel is very much town-centric. On the other hand, Muo Resort is more rustic and geared towards the outdoors with a farm house setting (Read my other review on MUO Resort).
MUO Boutique Hotel is refurbished from an old shophouse building. Whilst the facade is conserved, its interior is overhauled and decorated into a contemporary space outfitted in retro décor, with nods to the town’s heritage and creative community. At the lobby and hotel corridors, you will notice an assortment of retro paraphernalia — Old TV sets, radios and antique lamps, which is a throwback to the nostalgic years.
Opened in 2017, the 24-room hotel offers rooms that are located from the first to the third level (British setting). I had booked a Deluxe Twin Room (No. 204) and was accommodated on the second level. The room offers a view of the Muar River, though obstructed by buildings and trees. While it also faces the road, traffic noise is kept to a minimum with its double pane windows.
Although the room measures 15 square metres, it offers all the comfort of the stay. The bathroom is of acceptable size, though there is no partition at the showering area. This resulted in the bathroom floor being wet after each shower. Fortunately it dries up rather quickly. Part of the bathroom is covered with frosted glass, but privacy is ensured. The showering experience is enhanced with a rain shower fitting. The shower pressure is good and the bath towel is both thick and fluffy.
Entertainment is limited to local channels and a couple of Cable TV channels such as Aljazzera, CCTV4, Astro Supersport. The Wi-Fi connectivity in the room is good.
The amenities in the room include shower gel, shampoo and hair dryer. There are no dental kit, mini fridge and electronic safe. A kettle is provided to make fruit tea, a nice Muar beverage choice offered by the hotel. Although there is no food and beverage outlet in the hotel, you can find plenty of eateries serving local food that are within walking distance. There are also a 7-Eleven and foreign exchange service nearby.
Overall, MUO Boutique Hotel is a good accommodation choice in Muar. Its strategic location makes it convenient for travellers who want to stay near the bus terminal (Bentayan Muar Terminal), the various attraction sites and popular food spots. As a guide, these are the walking distances from the hotel to the following places:
- Muar Street Art - 200m
- Wetex Parade (Shopping mall) - 400m
- Glutton Food Street - 650m
- Bentayan Muar Terminal - 750m
- Muar Cultural Walk - 800m
If you are searching for a nice looking Instagrammable hotel located in the town centre, look no further.
- kevint611 (10/5): Good location and friendly staff - The hotel is located towards the end of the busy main street. Thus, it is still very convenient to walk around in the city. Even though it is at the main roadside, it wasn't so noisy at night because lesser vehicle on the road after 9pm. The hotel will provide parking coupon that allow you to park at the open area at the opposite private parking.
The Malay lady (sorry I couldn't see her name on the tag) at the check-in counter is very friendly. The hotel will also provide two tea bags to guest as welcome drink, also some local snacks.
The tatami room with window is small but good enough for 1 person. Bathroom size is decent.
If you don't want to go far, you can just walk across the road near the bus station to get your dinner. The corner shop serves nice mee bandung and a local snack call jemput-jemput.
- hassy12 (10/5): Lovely setting by the river - Its my first time walking in without a booking to a hotel. Checked online, sold out. Was lucky to get a room. A Twin Room with window at RM130. Quite a bargain. Overall cleanliness is great. We push two bed together, nothing underneath the bed. Good impression. Bed was comfortable, 2 towels and face towels provided. Dispensable body shampoo and hair shampoo. The hotel itself gave a nice aesthetic. Nicely decorated. Upon checkin we were given local snacks & fruit tea. Nice gesture. Did not expect it at all. Free parking across the street near Taxi Terminal. Do note that Mi Bandung Hj Hanipah is very near to the hotel. And its a must try when in Muar. Overall, highly recommended.
- SharinaS (8/5): Convenient location accessible to food street - 4 star instead of 5 because
1) I booked Tatami Twin room for my friend and i based on the room photos and description in Agoda which indicated two single proper beds. Upon check in, the receptionist explained to us that the rooms are small and tatami room means just a mattress on the tatami floor. So we requested for an upgrade to ensure that we have proper beds. We settled with her for the upgrade.
We don't mind paying for an upgraded room if this is so, but the descriptions in websites are the same and in fact also same pricing between tatami and non-tatami rooms. We didn't ask to see the actual tatami room as described by the receptionist as we were too busy with our day but trusted her explanation. After checked in, we entered our assigned room, it was very small, although it had a window with a view of the harbour. My booking on Agoda was Superior Tatami Twin. So i guess my booking was for a room without a window, and both these rooms seem the same size ie 15m2.
- siokjin (8/5): Probably the best place to stay in Muar - Everything about this hotel is decent. The road reaching this hotel is a busy street so expect some delays if u drive during peak hours. There are ample parking around and in front the hotel.
The good:
Comfortable room & cold air cond
Decent Wi-Fi signal and sufficient for 3 devices
USB cable was provided in the room not sure intentionally or left behind by previous occupant
About 10 minutes walk to glutton street but try not to walk alone
There seems to be more than meets the eye but was not introduced to by the hotel staffs, which is unfortunate
Checking in and out was a breeze with free tea provided
Friendly staffs
The bad:
Nothing much here but lacking a fridge and not providing toothbrush set is a minor inconvenience
The soundproofing is a little poor
Overall, a slight tweak or improvement can certainly get this hotel a 5 star rating
- sbalraj (4/5): ok nothing great - its an ok hotel. bed and pillow are comfy. since the hotel is facing the mainroad. the rooms are terribly noisy. i didnt get a peaceful sleep. if can try getting a room facing back of the hotel not front.
another thing, the receptionist should learn to be more customer oriented, she was pretty rude and not friendly.
-booking under sunny-
- zmyusof (8/5): Best choice in Muar - Stayed here for a night my short trip. Nice basic room but somewhat small room by Malaysian standard and considering the price. Centrally located and within short distance of most places to visit in Muar. Parking is provided just opposite the hotel but fairly limited. You cant fault Muar in general since it is by far the cleanest town i have ever been.
- maddy8266 (10/5): Great hotel, strategic & value for money - Absolutely a great place to stay. Great for solo, couple & family. Value for money. No worries about parking, the hotel staff will assist. Cosy, clean & interesting room deco. Friendly & helpful staffs.
- MuhamadArif (6/5): - There are no designated parking so have to park on public parking. But they give us parking coupons for compensation. The room is a bit dirty. Would love to see some improvements.
- Verified traveler (4/5): ..... - Having an issue with cloaked sink and floor trap. Also, hand bidet next to WC broken. Gladly solve upon complaint.
At night, small cockroaches are everywhere near the dustbin and inside the toilet.
Btw I'm staying at level 3 which the same level as the rooftop restaurant.
- Anonymous (8/5): - The room is quite small, hardly any space for luggage and solat. But since we are only staying for only 1 night, the small room is acceptable since its new and clean. Bedding was great and we had the 3rd floor room with the river view.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The family room was cost but rather dusty and hope the management will take note and improve on this. Otherwise it is a nice boutique hotel
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very convenient, near the shopping district with many eating establishments
- Companion738552 (4/5): Cockroaches spotted !!! - Please get rid of the pest. I have found & killed 2 small cockroaches in the room.
The staff is good just that the room cleanliness need to be improved.
Please maintain it before I change to a better hotel.
- Yoing (6/5): - Nice location and clean rooms.
But noisy traffic noise at night and bathroom floods during shower.
Rooms are small
- DANIEL_SIN_73 (6/5): Small room and stayed at top floor with cockroaches infested room - Not a good experience. Room is really small and cockroaches appear out of nowhere in the evening after downpour. Must be a gap in the renovation that allows them to crawl through. Complained to the hotel front desk and got change of room.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Deco was on point - loved it.
- Zu (10/5): - The location
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Just ok for me and my family 😊
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Everything is fine with me. But, I don't like the smell of my room.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good and No Good - Good:
1. Location
2. Hotel Lobby
3. Staff Service
No Good,
1. Sound proof
2. condition of room (toilet water is small, no windows thus strong smell and damp)
3. cleanliness to be improved
4. No safe box, limited clothes hanging spaces
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice room, nice view, good staff
- Verified traveler (4/5): Cleanliness to be improved - The hotel looked very clean and neat when you enter. It was also gave off a very cosy and comfy vibe. However, cleanliness could be improved.
We stayed at the muo family room. Which has another floor in the room. There were corners with cowebs, surfaces were covered with dust. The one that really broke the straw was cockroaches. Found two huge cockroaches in the room during our short one night stay there. They were grown adult cockroaches.
Dont know how did they get there but that was an experience we will never forget. Glad it was only a one night stay. Will not be considering them again.
- YewBee (8/5): Muo Boutique, upkeep your status - Hotel location is good. Very clean too. Hawker food around the area is plentiful. A very small hicup though. But not much of a issue too.
- Norsyah (10/5): - I love this hotel. Nice room, nice scenery from the rooftop, excellent staffs hospitality,
- cyingng (6/5): Clean Small Room for a short stay - We have stayed a number of boutique hotels, and this is by far the smallest we ever seen. Even smaller than the one we experienced in Hong Kong and Japan.
We were there to visit our Muar's friend and attending function. Judging from Muar's living cost, we felt the room's rate is overprice. It is not worth to pay for such a small room, where there is not even place for your luggage. We were lucky to just a small backpack for two of us, can't imagine those with bigger luggage.
The room is clean, but it doesn't have a fridge as it is so tiny, the moment you step in, that's the only open space you have.
- Wiseguy-ns (8/5): Karnival Jambatan Sultan Ismail 2019 - I was at the Karnival Jambatan Sultan Ismail Muar on April 19, 2019. I travel from Kuala Lumpur to Muar for the event. I booked Muo Boutique Hotels for the first time. It is walking distance the carnival event.
I really like the room, nice and clean with good ambient lighting from the window since I booked the room with windows.
The pillows really suit me as it is not too hard or too soft, and I slept well through the night.
Food is easily available. Public transport, taxi and bus stand is nearby walking distance.
I will definitely stay here for my next visit. Not forgetting the friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Baby cockroach found in room!!! Room is rather small and soundproof is rather poor. We can hear guest coughing from other room.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - clean rooms, friendly staff, only downside is rooms too small
- Verified traveler (10/5): - really live staying here... highly recomend
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good location to city centre.
Room was small.
There was no wall to seperate shower from toilet. The entire bathroom floor is wet after a shower. Very unpleasant .
- BoardingPass605209 (4/5): Limited room space even in bontique standard - A fairly new and clean hotel. We stayed in a deluxe twin room and the room size is half of a standard hotel. The room arrangement is not practical as there is no table, chair, fridge, locker, wallrobe and the only mirror is in the bathroom. The toilet is always wet as there is no screen separating the shower and toilet. Hardly any space for hanging clothes in the bathroom.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice & clean hotel/room at the centre of Muar.
But, the room curtains just enough to cover the window but not the sunlight. During the day, even all the light turn off theres still sunlight enter through the windows.. Thats it.. Overall the hotel is excellent!
THANK U.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - good...
nice....
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Situated in the city close to shops, restaurants and public transport facilities. Staff are very friendly, helpful and professional.
- Chua (8/5): - A unique hotel with a special interior concept and basic amenities and all. Great rooftop garden that overlooks the muar river. A pity there isn't a breakfast provided.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Well kept boutique hotel. Rooms were clean, beds were well made and toilets were clean. However, parking lots in front of hotel was limited. Alternative was to park at the opposite carpark across the road which was accessible via a big detour. It was not safe to park at the car park in my opinion. Otherwise, would have given the boutique 5*
- nutr1soy (8/5): Aesthetic setup - Rooms were pretty small but it was alright for me because we only stayed two nights and were mostly out. Appreciated the cleanliness of the floor and everything. Beds are super comfortable!! There's even this rooftop area you can go out into, one part that's closed off with aircon available, and these high tables that you can sit at to chat or enjoy the view. Front desk people were very nice too, and there are refreshments available in the lobby when you wait while you check in.
Only gripe is that the flush function in the toilet wasn't working properly, and kept flooding - maybe something wrong with the piping system.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Cozy hotel for family - Good and cozy for family stay😊
- Amirul (10/5): - Very pleasant stay
- KianKhiang (10/5): Best hotel in Muar - We stayed in family room. Big enough. Room very cosy and clean. Location is at town centre overlooking to Muar River and bridge. Their staffs very friendly. There is open roof top concept at L3. Will definetely back again.
- Barbara (2/5): - We had paid for a Double Storey Family Room. However, when we checked in, we were given a Deluxe Room instead. We were informed by the hotel staff that our room has been taken by another guest who has checked in earlier. This is really unacceptable, how could a hotel staff release a paid room to another guest???
- mingzhel2015 (8/5): Small but Cozy Room - The room is quite small with no much room to move about. Bathroom space is good enough. The hotel is well decorated with classic posters and antics. There are no designated parking space for hotel guest but there are public parking spot surrounding the hotel. The hotel staff will give you parking vouchers to be placed at car dashboard for free. Banks, convenient store, restaurant and coffee shop is few blocks away from the hotel.
- Joshua (10/5): Great service - Convient location with lots of local food stalls. Very friendly staffs.
Slightly misleading over the Swimming pool as it is located at another hotel location
- Jacob (8/5): New hotel at a good location. - The hotel is located within walking distance of food places and the main shopping centre. Room is small with no cupboard and dressing table. Shower area in toilet does not have a partition so water splashes all over the toilet. Only local TV channels are available.
Beds are clean and comfortable. People are friendly and very helpful. Free coffee at reception area. A simple hotel to stay at when visiting Muar.
- AH SONG (10/5): EXTRAORDINARY! - Must stay! A rarity (go to roof top, chairs, tablespoon & added covered canopy with view of river). Lobby showcases nostalgia old TVs, radio, toys. Lots of wooden furniture due to Muar's industry. Ask for unique family rm with 2 joined bed heads separated by divider. Only rooms small but ok as new, clean, amenities incl. bedroom slippers! Invest in rooms with windows, ask for river or town view, not wall. Location next to Muar historical shophouses & taxi cab M$5 to main Bentayan bus terminus. Homely, smiling staff, cozy atmosphere.
- ahtiangm (10/5): A SMALL REST IN MUAR - A place very suitable for Family, Company , or Small couple trip.
My first surprise was the room is clean, comfortable, and it provide a lot of room facilities such as hair dryer, tv, water boil, cup and etc.
The other outside event can badminton, ping pong, baskestball and etc.
The staff also nice and friendly
- jewel1238 (6/5): Great location in Muar - Interior details and rooms well decorated.
However, my room was facing the main road, it was too noisy for me to sleep.
Also, there is no fridge in the room.
The staffs were friendly and helpful.
Good location, food stalls and the shopping mall within walking distance.
- R (8/5): - Nice hotel but housekeeping was a bit slow
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great stay, just some minor problem - Pros: Bed and pillow are comfy. All of the staff are friendly. Room is clean.
Cons: Room is very very small (not enough space to put our bags). Water drainage need some improvement - water flow all over the bathroom. Only one small bottle of shampoo and bath gel are provided. Only one hanger provided. Limited tv channel.
- JOSHUA (10/5): - This hotel is unique in design. Staff is extremely helpful and friendly. Room is a little small and bed too soft ( maybe its my personal preference).
But in general, location is good and the hotel is very clean.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Not for business travellers - The hotel is nice and all, really like the theme too but the thing is the room i stayed at is really cramped. The is no proper place to put your luggage, the sink is not in the bath and the is no desk and chair. Overall business travellers should stay away from this hotel.
- ZHI XUAN (8/5): Comfy stay. Better one if WIFI is working. - Decoration could be observed to be done with effort.
However WIFI never seems to work, can never be connected.
If guest just look for a nice room to stay for the night, a worthy one then. Will be a comfy stay if you need not WIFI.
- Eileen (4/5): Really dirty and smelly toilets - The toilet bowls were coloured and smelled soiled. The walls have large cracks even though it’s a really new hotel and the ceiling was dusty.
- Simon (6/5): Nice hotel and well located. - Don’t like the small room, too cramped up. Like staying in a wardrobe!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Rooms are a bit small; not much space to put luggage or walk around. Great staff. Excellent service.
- sheng (10/5): - Clean nice room and friendly hotel staff. Rooftop view is excellent.
- GL Tan (6/5): Hotel in the small city - Good location in the city centre. Great hotel staff , very friendly and polite
Hotel room is clean but very small and with small single beds meant for kids.
No breakfast provided.
It is not worth the money
- Charine (8/5): Cosy Little Haven - 👍: Hotel was relatively new, compared to the usual old ones in this small town. Cosy & comfortable, staffs were super friendly. Especially love the little souvenirs corner and the teh tarik machine. Rooftop provides a scenic breezy view.
👎: No racks, no cupboards, small room, no seating area. Soundproofing is bad, heard door banging the whole night. Cars honking and can even hear people speaking loudly downstairs.
Overall a good experience, love the “family” & “personalized “ touch. Many thanks to the friendly staffs 😄
- Verified traveler (8/5): - very nice hotel rooms and staff. however it can be quite noisy at night because it's situated next to the road and the cigarette smoke from other rooms seems to spread to non smoking rooms at times.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Cozy hotel with excellent service - Cozy hotel with excellent service. Clean and comfortable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Neat and cosy - Nice, neat and cosy environment. Value for money. A short drive distance to town centre.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Service has room for improvement. - This is our second trip to this Hotel. When we reach the hotel at 545pm, we were told that there is no bookings. We were made to wait for at least half an hour and were told that we were lucky that they have a room for us, after finding out that Hotels.com did not have the booking but it is under Expedia. Very contradictory comments from the hotel staff. The WIFI is not working which is frustrating.
Overall, we miss the host in our first stay, even though we got the Tatami room. We feel that the staff are not well trained in hospitality. Luckily, the room with the windows is okay, definitely better than the Tatami room. Hope the hotel staff can improve for our next stay.
- Kimberly (10/5): - The room is nice.
Bed is comfy.
Shower pressure is strong.
Walking distance to famous food area.
Free parking at opposite parking area.
- salmiah (8/5): new and clean - new and clean, near to good restaurant- walking distance.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Clean boutique hotel
Small rooms. Beds very low on the floor like a futon. Hard to get up when you are old.
