Guest Reviews
- Michelle (4/5): - The location is fantastic, but my praises stop there. I'm not sure if this is a COVID-only procedure or
- jcb193 (8/5): Basic, not a lot of options in town. - Pros:
Large family room is well sized and decent.
Located right in dead center of town.
Was allowed and early check-in
Neutral:
Pretty basic, likely has looked the same for the last 20yrs.
Cons:
No reception
No breakfast (at this time)
Room was clean, but not deep clean (crumbs about, etc)
- Verified traveler (6/5): - No frills property, no lobby, no normal check-in, no amenities whatsoever; yet for the area, it is a reasonable stay.
- 123karlig (8/5): simple, clean, easy check in, great location - I know the reviews are mixed on this place. But we like the location so we gave it a try. We were very happy. We had a room on the top floor for our family of 4. The beds were fine, the room was clean. Staff is very hard to find now in Iceland so I understood when we found out that in fact there was no breakfast included. There was coffee! Our 9 and 11-year-old had fun feeling free and grown-up. They were able to walk around town "alone" while my husband and I enjoyed the time to ourselves. We could walk to the tours and also drove around the island to hike as a family. We could walk to the nice restaurants and 66 North. We loved Gott and the bakery! We took a small RIF boat tour thru seacliff and a small bus tour thru eyjatours. I highly recommend both. So from a cost and location, I would say this place is great! YOu can spend more and get a nicer place. Or you can adventure all day long and spend the extra money on doing fun things! Like seeing the beluga whales... BTW, entry is included to this thru the Eyjatour.
- Gudjon (8/5): Great location - Great location, pretty nice room. No reception, but good service from the person who came when we called. There was a bit of noise during the night, some odd sounds like a drill at 5am keeping us up.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The room was not ready for us when we checkt in. Hade to wait one houre for the room . They forgot to clean it
- Ralph (8/5): Good place, just ensure get right room - The location is ideal, couldn’t be better. And our room ended up being simple yet lovely. They had however promised us online a room with a kitchen, sofa & view & when we got there - they at first showed us one with none of these, and blocked windows. Not ok. A very nice woman we found did move us to smaller nice room, with view.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great location. Quiet
- Joakim (8/5): Comfortable room on a small island - Description say free parking, yes on a parkinglot two street away, not their own parking. Clean and comfortable room. Location is great to restaurants.
Allt hreint. Ódýr gisting. Vantaði te og kaffi og einnig peru í lampa í lofti og á náttborði. Þurfti að laga hurð á sturtuklefa.
- md_ed13 (4/5): Trash from previous guests - Things went poorly for us from the beginning of our time at Hotel Eyjar. Understandably for a small operation, a note was left on the door stating that we could call to begin the check-in process. However, for an operation and country with primarily English-speaking residents, seems odd the note was only in Icelandic. We translated, called and someone met us to check us in within 10 minutes.
The 4 bedroom room we were shown had an eclectic furniture style (not a problem) but the floors had clearly not been swept - the only initial problem we had with the hotel. We then came to discover when attempting to throw away some of our own trash, the trash under the sink in the main room was OVERFLOWING with trash from previous tenants including multiple pizza boxes, food items, and 3 full grocery bags. Due to no other options, we stayed the night but left promptly in the morning not opting for whatever breakfast was in store. Couldn't discouraging booking here strongly enough.
- GEORGE (10/5): Great hotel; informal staff; pleasant visit - Great little hotel! Check-in was just a phone call to the proprietor and he told me which room to go in, and that I would find my key on the table (which it was!).
Hotel was right on the street, but it was quiet.
It was very clean and roomy for an Icelandic hotel. We had three in our party (Me, my wife, and our 26-year-old daughter) and they had a fold-out couch for our daughter to sleep on. Extra linens were in the closet. (Except for the excessive snoring in the room, she slept great....)
Good restaurants down the street and across the street.
Parking was off-site (on the street), but there were no issues.
Wifi was faultless. TV worked fine and we found English channels.
Vessmannaeyjar is a charming island with a lot of interesting things to do: (look for puffins; climb the 1973 volcano; go to the Volcano Museum - very accommodating proprietor there, as well....)
Breakfast choices were limited but we found a decent donut shop kind of around the corner from the hotel.
Highest marks to these folks! I would visit the island again, and I would certainly stay at Hotel Eyjar again!
- Verified traveler (2/5): Awful - Ömurlegt.. ekki gista hér
- jonabh (8/5): Under the volcano - Hotel Eyjar reached by short ferry trip from Icelandic mainland— spectacular location right next to— now extinct— volcano; clean and spacious rooms, good breakfast and generally excellent service— staff is glad to help with luggage. Several interesting places within easy walking distance. In spite of having to climb some stairs to reach our rooms, my group of 33 (all of us over 75) were well taken care of and very satisfied. Hope to revisit!
- 906kelas (6/5): Just ok - Great location and relatively clean, all interiors as basic as they can be and a really hard mattress - the breakfast was unfresh and the breakfast area could be way cozier. Would look for another option next time.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Decent hotel. Nice location. A bit pricey but hey, it's Iceland.
- Verified traveler (10/5): A pleasant stay on Westman island. - We had a really nice stay at hotel Eyjar. We arrived much earlier than the check in time and were given our room right away so we could deposit our backpacks. The breakfast was also excellent.
Salle d’eau correcte. Petit salon agréable.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Good if you don’t get the bad room - Not sure if it’s because I booked my room through Hotels and my friends booked through Booking for same room type but my room was small and shower was impossible to work or broken. Bed was so very hard. 3 of my friends had rooms with microwave fridge and couch. We couldn’t find anyone to check us in so left after roaming through building and knocking on doors. Came back later to find someone there. After check in she left again. Park on street where you can. Pizza place up the street is very good and reasonably priced. Seafood restaurant within walking is very good with great fish and chips.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Not a full-service hotel - Not really a full-service hotel (no front desk/reception). Arriving at 10AM, the site was locked, had to call someone to open the door for us. Cleanliness was not outstanding. Overall, value for the price paid was not outstanding
- Athar (8/5): - Nice hotel, walking distance from ferry.
No Elevators
- CFlo1 (10/5): Perfect location - Lovely accommodations! Our host could not have been any friendlier- he escorted us to our rooms, shared local info and provided for all of our needs. The location is right in the middle of the downtown area- easy walking distance from dining and shopping. Rooms are spacious and inviting. Breakfast was included with our stay and was a great meal to start our day.
Our host told us as we were leaving
“I never say goodbye- so .. until I see you again..,.!” Wonderful memories of our time on Westman Island!
- Randy (8/5): May 2018 - We hit the island in the slow slow
Season and actually had the place pretty much to ourselves. Cute island.
- BernhardK1 (8/5): Great location and host, basic accommodations - We were delayed landing in Vestmannaeyjar by one day due to a flight cancellation (high winds). We communicated with the host who asked us to simply call him when we landed. After landing we had issues with our cell phones so I asked an airport agent to call for us. When we got picked up we had a couple of odd conversations with the gentleman who picked us up until we realized that he was the owner of a different hotel! In typical Vestmannaeyjar fashion though he told us that the owner of Hotel Eyjar was his friend and he just took us there :)
Our host was super friendly and we got a nice big room with kitchenette. Everything is pretty basic but well cared for. The hotel is really central to everything on the island, you can walk to all the most important sites, there are stores and cafes close by.
The breakfast was very nice and the host took us back to the airport the next day. We would go back again.
- Boogie51 (10/5): Hotel and Host = A-1 - Stayed at this charming Hotel and was more than expected. Our host is a fabulous man with a smile that's make you feel welcomed and at home. Extremely accommodating and extremely professional. The breakfast offered was fulfilling considering what you would pay at the restaurant!
All in all i would definitely recommend this hotel if you visit this clean and charming town.
Merci " host ☝🏻"
- cprofct (10/5): Nice Local Family Hotel - We booked this for a one night stay on the island. It was easily walked to from the ferry dock, and we were greeted warmly by the owner's daughter. The rooms were large enough to accommodate a family easily, and a nice breakfast buffet was served in the morning. We were able to stow our bags until it was time to board our ferry the next day. The rooms and halls are decorated with local artists ' paintings, which enhances the experience. The owner and family are warm and friendly, which makes the stay all the more enjoyable.
- IowaMum (6/5): A disappointment - I was very disappointed in this hotel. There are only two hotels listed on Trip Advisor for the island and we wanted to stay three nights. After reading about both, I selected this one. I wish I had not. I reserved two rooms for the five of us to make sure we had enough room and five to six beds. I requested that we be next to each other. We drove all day to make our ferry to the island. We left Hofn area at 8 am, took an evening ferry and arrived on the island at 6:30 pm. We drove around searching for the hotel, finally asking someone where it was. It was impossible to find because it has a small door next to the tourist office/coffee shop which occupies the first floor. We walked in with our five bags and our kids and we were all tired. We wanted to check in and find dinner. There is no obvious reception. There was no one sitting anywhere to check us in. All of the rooms and doors were closed. We found a sign which said the check-in was on the third floor, so we lugged our luggage up the stairs to the third floor, but all the doors were closed. Finally, my husband went up to the fourth floor and found there were two rooms with doors open there and there were five beds between them. We assumed these must be our rooms. So, we brought our luggage up to them and prepared to leave for dinner. I was leaving a note on the door of the breakfast room, when a woman walked by with towels. It turned out that she was a cleaner and she could help us. We were not supposed to be on the fourth floor, but she had to make phone calls to find our rooms. Finally, she put us in smaller, not so nice rooms on the third floor. One of them was dirty with a dirty bathroom. We were very unhappy. We were there three nights. Breakfast is included and has many food options. Our kids liked breakfast. The woman who helps is overworked. They need to develop a reception and welcome approach that works better. The rooms we were in needed repairs, cleaning and improvements. The owner said by way of explanation that he is new. I would check to see if these improvements have been made before I stay here again.
- G6090LJbarbaras (10/5): Great Find - The manager was attentive and most welcoming. The rooms were well appointed and the location was ideal. An easy walk from the ferry; and if you have a car it's no problem finding parking. Very clean and reasonably priced with spacious accommodations
- csc54 (10/5): Lovely accommodation - This is a lovely hotel centrally located in town. Close to the Eldfell volcano trail. The room was a corner and we had beautiful views of the volcano. Tradional scandanavian breakfast included each morning. Friendly and helpful desk. I highly recommend staying here if you are visiting the Vestmannyer islands.
- Rude Owner (4/5): Rude Owner - Was told by the owner at check in to remove my shoes because he didn't like dirt in his hotel..said to me "I don't like that...Nobody likes that!" We just got off the ferry, my shoes were fine. Besides, this is not his own personal home, this was hotel I was spending $300 to stay in with my family. Breakfast was included, I request at 7 AM, and again he was unhappy with this time, he thought it was unnecessarily early. Again, challenging me on every little thing. The hotel has four floors but no elevator and he condescendingly be moaned about all of our luggage and asked if you're moving to Iceland, but not in a jovial way. Oddly we only had one carry-on piece of luggage each. Three small bags total. we travel light on purpose. Suffice to say this cantankerous owner does not deserve your business. There a much nicer selections elsewhere.
- Kettering20 (10/5): Fantastic hotel with very good owner - Stayed here overnight as part of a quick trip to the fantastic Vestmannaeyjar and a round of golf.
Hotel is ideally located in town within easy walking distance of restaurants and bars.
Rooms are great with excellent showers. The owner goes out of his way to help and provides a wonderful buffet breakfast spread.
We shall definitely stay here again on our next trip.
- 675mw (10/5): Excellent base for visit to Vestmannaeyjar - This was our second visit to Iceland in less than a year, but first to the Westmans. The outside looked basic, but don't let it deceive you. We were given a room that stretched across the entire front part of the hotel. Included a mini kitchen, largest we had seen in Iceland.
Entire purpose of coming to the Westmans was to find Puffins. On our previous trip to Iceland, they had already headed out to sea. There was a friend of the owner running the hotel the weekend we were here. She gave us the exact location and a good time to go find Puffins. Without her information we would have totally missed them. We encountered a local at the site, and she explained that evening was the first time for the season that the Puffins had landed. Needless to say, the information from the hotel associate made our trip perfect. We got lots of pictures!
Breakfast was included, and the price for our stay was extremely reasonable for Iceland!. We will be back!
- halvorr699 (8/5): Small and cozy with a great host - This is a small hotel with a reception on a table in the breakfast room. Front there the host will do everything (and more) to make your stay fantastic! He took us on a free ride around the island and told us of how he as a 15 years old boy experienced the volcano break out in 1973 when the island nearly was split in two and most of the town was buried in ashes.
The rooms are clean and of OK standard with en suit bathrooms. Breakfast buffet is satisfactory with fresh eggs and bacon prepared on request. A roof terrace for a view of the town (or a
The town is not very large so it is only a 5 minutes walk to the harbour and 15 minutes to the museum.
- Breidablik (8/5): Good hotel - This is a very good no nonsense hotel. It is very good value for the money. The breakfast is splendid. I have stayed there á couple of times and have had very good rooms with great view. Very central in the City. Close to the fabolous Gott cafe.
- turbolaa (10/5): Awesome Owner - We had planned to visit Hotel Eyjar and the Vestmannaeyjar on our trip to Iceland. Unfortunately, there were very high winds and the ferry was canceled - which we did not realize until we were pulling up to the ferry terminal in the evening at 6:45 pm. I called the hotel and the owner very kindly canceled our booking and did not charge us (even though our contract stated we would be charged). So kind!!
- riverboatrandy (8/5): Great Hotel, Great Owners! - I cannot thank the owners enough for their hospitality. Rarely have I met people who truly seem to enjoy helping others as much as these. We enjoyed insightful conversations over a delicious breakfast, a very comfortable room and local wisdom that made our trip to Vestmannaeyjar very special and one we will remember and recommend very highly. I can't wait to see what the owners have planned next. We felt like family from the time we arrived.
- epltr (10/5): Great Stay! - We were met on the corner by the owner as we were having trouble finding the hotel. Awesome room! FABULOUS breakfast! Opened the gate to the lighthouse so we could drive up onto the property and watch the Northern Lights. Super friendly host. THANKS! K
- danieli272 (10/5): Great Hotel! - Loved this hotel! The owners was very nice and helpful. He took great care of us and we will stay there again if ever we can. Lovely room. The breakfast was fantastic, with freshly cooked over easy eggs, yogurts, meats, cheese and fruit.
