Guest Reviews
- Helen (10/5): -
- Quigs (9/5): - Ample car parking, lovely homely bar and restaurant, staff were warm and friendly. Food was great, especially the special offer, beers good đ
Bedroom had proper quilt and deep pillows, shower was so warm and fierce, just the way I like it.
Now a personal one for me is light pollution when you bed down for the night, no issues here as the curtains were excellent. 0730 breakfast caught me out, I like to dine at 0700 and be away for 0730 but that's just a personal thing. Breakfast service was lovely btw.
- Darragh (8/5): -
- Antony (10/5): Ideally located property to visit local RHS and National Trust Properties - Well presented hotel with friendly and helpful staff. Ideal location for local train station (to Chester and Manchester) being a five minute walk. Trains to Chester are hourly but were prompt and on time. Once at Chester a local bus will take you to the city centre for exploring - highly recommend the Cathedral.
Food was excellent and served in a timely manner and room was good (only minor issue was the duvet was quite heavy). Would have no problems recommending this place. Ideally located for both National Trust and RHS properties. Apart from the heavy duvet there is nothing else I could fault.
- Colin (10/5): Really enjoyed it, lovely experience - Everything! The early breakfast finish, it finished at 9pm, as we were on holiday we would have preferred it to be until 10am
- Christine (5/5): Wonât be returning - Charlie was very nice. Dark pokey room, extremely uncomfortable bed, ripped net curtain (!) very hot, kept fan on all day/night.
No extra lock on inside door.
Fail to understand why this property is a 4 star.

- Richard (5/5): Potential to be amazing but needs an upgrade and not worth the amount I paid for 1 night. - Great food Room needed attention and mattress needs throwing out. Worst night sleep Iâve had in a long time.
- Catherine (7/5): Good location - Location and friendly staff Position of room
- Peter (7/5): -
- Ian (6/5): Overnight stop with great food and friendly atmosphere. - The staff are excellent. Very approachable, friendly and helpful. The food is great- lovely sharing plate followed by prawn nicoise and chicken with asparagus. Delicious eggs Benedict for breakfast. The bedrooms are tired and in need of a makeover. You can do better than that JW as we have experienced elsewhere. Your excellent staff and your customers deserve better.
- Janice (8/5): -
- Michelle (4/5): - The location was good. It was booked to accomadate a wedding we were attending nearby at the Merrydale manor. We were awoken abruptly by work men banging and drilling outside our room window at 8.45am.
This was booked last year and we were not informed of work being completed during our stay or any consideration to us.
- ZK.Dave (8/5): - Quick attentive check-in. Pleasant reasonably spacious room with some attractive antique furniture. Dinner was well presented and frankly well above expectation for a simple country pub. No particular negatives.
- Ann (9/5): Excellent one night stay near M6 - The warm welcome The bedroom furniture and bathroom could do with a refurb
- Mark (10/5): - All was fabulous especially Karen
- Trish (10/5): Would recommend and definately stay again as a lovely vibe in the pub and restaurant and staff fab - Didnât have breakfast as at a wedding so late night but did get told about it thank you Lovely comfort just quite a few cob webs around the ceilings that should have been hoovered previous to our stay
- David (8/5): -
- hampton (7/5): - Staff were good, got a couple of dirty cups at breakfast which were changed.
Dinner in the evening was excellent!.
Breakfast average. Nothing
- David (8/5): Lovely hotel in very quiet village - Location.
Good breakfast Able to hear TV in adjoining room
Bathroom radiator difficult to regulate heating
- jill (9/5): - Staff, location and food excellent
Lovely big bright, clean room Think bed/mattress had seen better days!
- Lee (8/5): - Staff very friendly, rooms nice Price fixe menu, portions very small.
Rooms nice, but needs tlc
- Mark (8/5): Very nice property with great food. - Nice looking property in a very nice location. The restaurant food was excellent both in the evening and for breakfast. The staff were very friendly throughout the stay. The room and surrounding areas were a little tired and could do with touching up a bit.
- Keith (10/5): - Welcoming staff, nice room with a beautiful view. Dinner was Prix Fixe with 3 courses for under ÂŁ20 and delicious.
Breakfast of eggs Royale excellent too. Nothing.
- RICHARD (10/5): -
- Peter (8/5): - Friendly staff, good food, large room, convenient location. The decor in the room and bathroom were a little tired. There was noise from the kitchen extractor fan up until they stopped serving.
- Robert (7/5): Lovely stop off while travelling the M6⌠- Most things ⌠friendly relaxed I considered the catering below par. Evening meal was good however much of the menu seemed unavailable. Breakfast a disappointment with old or tough muffins. Perhaps we were a one off ?
- Philip (9/5): Very good overnight stay for B&B - Room, breakfeast, dinner were all good. Staff were very friendly and overall it was a good venue. Would recommend.
- Patricia (8/5): -
- Daisy (8/5): Nice room, great food. perfect for work travel - Nice room, good water pressure and food was great in the bar Shower head was stuck on sharp jet of water. There were some bits of shaved beard hair on the sink
- Paul (9/5): -
- andy (7/5): Served its purpose as a base for 2 nights but average at best - Location Rooms are tired, squeaky floors, water for bath not v hot
- Campbell (9/5): - The staff were excellent . The food was also very good.
- jane (9/5): - Staff excellent, large room N/a
- Pratap (9/5): -
- Dann (8/5): Pleasant stay , staff are a credit to the owners. - Cosy feel, nice staff good food, good value. Nothing to dislike
- Claire PB (7/5): Just slightly off the mark. - Mostly good food. Close to station and for visiting a friend. Friendly staff. Poorly lit bedroom. Grubby net curtain. Dust on lots of surfaces in the bedroom. View of rubbish and broken bits and pieces as you approach residents entrance.h
- denise (9/5): Lovely dinner and lovely breakfast - The friendliness of the staff
- Foster (8/5): Very pleasant - Comfortable room, pleasant staff Bathroom a bit dated
- julia (8/5): -
- Lee (9/5): -
- Mark (6/5): Lovely pub, great food and excellent staff, but would not stay here again I'm afraid. - The pub is nicely decorated and comfortable with a popular bar and restaurant area. The staff are really friendly, the beer is good and the food is excellent. We ate both nights of our stay in the bar area, which was fine on Friday evening as there were a lot of people eating in the bar, but on Saturday evening we wished we had opted for a table in the restaurant, as we were a bit "forgotten" about in the bar, since the waiting staff were all very busy in the restaurant. This meant our main courses were a bit lukewarm by the time they arrived as it took a long time for someone to clear our starter plates. We didn't find this cause enough to complain, just something to be aware of.
The rooms are all located on the first floor and can be accessed from either inside the pub or via a side door (room key opens the lock) when the pub is closed. Breakfast is excellent, with either continental or cooked options. The poached eggs I had with my Eggs Royale were perfectly cooked!
The room we had (No. 4) was located directly over the main entrance into the bar. It was a decent size and clean, though needs some TLC, particularly the bathroom (which we understand is planned very soon). Tea, coffee, water and biscuits were all supplied. Initial impressions were very good, but we had to revise our opinions by the end of our stay.
Hot water was plentiful and the shower powerful in the bathroom. Lots of big fluffy towels were supplied along with complimentary shampoo and shower gel. Unfortunately, the quality of sleep we experienced was not good. The bed was very firm and the room extremely warm despite having the radiators turned off. The main problem for us though, was noise. I am not sure what it was, but there was an intrusive "rumbling" type noise that happened for about 3 or 4 seconds every 10 minutes (yes, I timed it!) and made it difficult to drop off to sleep despite wearing ear plugs. I mentioned this to the manager who said he thought it was probably the cellar chillers, but I thought it sounded more like some sort of pump somewhere in the building that was being activated intermittently. In addition to this, the music from the bar below our room, whilst not loud, was audible and carried on past midnight on Saturday, though I was not at all aware of it on the previous night.
The bathroom certainly needed some renovating, more so than the room itself. There was even a rusty threaded rod sticking out of the wall in the shower which I assume used to have a soap dish or something similar fitted to it once upon a time. I feel this should have been removed a long time ago as it was unsightly and could also be potentially dangerous if anyone should slip in the shower and catch themselves on it.
- Ian (9/5): Good friendly pub close to M6 ideal for a stopoverâ - Staff were friendly and helpful N/a
- Sonya (8/5): Great place close to local wedding venues - Great place, clean, really friendly helpful staff Rooms were very hot during the night. I did discover a fan in the wardrobe but only when I was packing to leave.
I understand it can be difficult to regulate temp in these old buildings... Maybe staff could tell people on check-in rooms do get hot and that there is a fan
Lighting was a bit too 'soft' when trying to apply makeup
- Matthew (10/5): Great little stay - The staff, ambience, food breakfast and evening meal, matress and shower. -
- Janet (9/5): - Quiet location and comfortable room. Food and beer was good. View from bedroom overlooking rubbish bins, very untidy but this didn't stop us enjoying our stay.
- Graham (9/5): Iâll stay again - Nice place, stayed before ⌠Great evening food, good menu, terrific breakfast, excellent staff. Nice neat comfortable room(s) comfy bed. Could do with some wee finishing touches here and there with maintenance, window handles, latches etc ⌠Minor cheap fixes that make a difference.
- Lorraine (6/5): The staff were nice & the pub has great potential for a country inn. - Location. Quiet. Hot water. TV. Large room. Big car park. Hairdryer. Towels. Not expensive. Not very clean. The dirty sheets from the guest from night before were piled up in my room when I arrived at 7pm. The bathroom has historic grime & my room smelled of other guests, stale. I think it was the old carpet.
- joanne (8/5): We stayed 2 nights to attend a nearby wedding, it was a really comfy cosy base ro spend the weekend - Lovely comfy country pub, good menu and friendly service Nothing
- David (10/5): -
- Elliot (10/5): -
- McWilliam (9/5): - All very good. Food very good and breakfast outstanding
- Chris (10/5): - Our room was spacious and we arrived after mid-night and a staff member was waiting to meet us long after closing hours. Will certainly stay there again. The breakfast was excellent Spacious rooms and great staff members.
- Paul (10/5): Pre wedding stayover - Great breakfast and evening room. Luvly bedroom too
- Janet (10/5): Very good value for money. - There was a lovely friendly atmosphere.
Food was excellent as were staff
- Rosemary (9/5): Delightful pub with a wonderfully warm welcome, cosy atmosphere and log fires. - We had a great welcome from Nathen which was a wonderful start! We loved the attractive bar, log fires, cosy dining room and bedroom with two chairs and a desk...perfect! Excellent menus, delicious food and drink and we were also beautifully looked after at breakfast by Karen. I can honestly say there was nothing we disliked.
- michael (10/5): A very comfortable & relaxing hotel to enjoy great food & a great pint of bitter . - The location was great combined with the excellent staff from cleaning through to bar and waitressing were absolutely
great, always a genuine smile & helpful . A real old fashioned pub with wonderfully kept bitter . A credit to JWLees. The menu is varied and very well cooked ( especially the three cheese & onion pie ) . Warm rooms that were very relaxing. I would liked to have been able to open the bathroom window to dispel steam, as the fan wasnât powerful enough. Also it was a shame that all bar one of the bedroom windows were painted closed ( couldnât open )
- Ugo (9/5): - Accoglienza e servizio davvero eccellenti. Nathan che si è occupato di me a cena e per la prima colazione è stato sia professionale che cordiale: bravissimo. Tornerò sicuramente, quando sarò a Manchester.
- Margaret (10/5): The âhotel/pub/B&B was so warm and cozy and made youfeel like home away from home. Very recommended for a s - Pretty much everythingâŚwhat a gem. The staff were lovely, the food was fabulous, and my room was spacious and cozy. There are some 5 star properties that could learn from this place đ I loved everything!
- Dave (9/5): - Large room, very comfortable. Great staff & a lovely breakfast Nothing

- James (10/5): Lovely stay lovely food and friendly staff - Lovely country pub
- adrian (9/5): -
- Jem (10/5): Great hotel. All needs met. Will definitely stay again if possible. - Great location with a well-appointed room, a very comfortable bed, and a very peaceful nightâs sleep. A terrific breakfast in the morning too- set me up for the day.
- Conroy (7/5): -
- joe (9/5): Iâd visit againâŚsay no more - The property was lovelyâŚit had an abundance of both charm and character. Staff were excellent. A few niggles but not worth mentioning.
- Sandra (5/5): Downstairs restaurant good. Also the food. Bedroomnot good at all. - Location suited our purpose. Bedroom was disappointing.
Dull fixtures .
Bed was very small.
Bathroom was dirty. Bath was damaged and sealant mouldy
- Howard (10/5): -

- Lucy (10/5): -
- Lianne (10/5): -
- Sandra (7/5): Good pub to stay at and dine at on the way to the Lakes - Karen gave the best breakfast experience we have had for ages (thanks to Simona for cooking it). The evening meal was tasty too and good value for money. Room overlooked road and railway which was unfortunate as it was a bit noisy
- Richard (6/5): Pleasant stay with filling breakfast - Bar restaurant area Good breakfast but bacon so over-cooked and spoiled
- Yvonne (9/5): Very good - A very good overnight stop, so felt refreshed and ready for our onward journey. N/A
- Alan (7/5): - A pleasant room in a delightful building and comfortable. Restaurant closes at 8pm
- morgan (2/5): Wonât stay again, awful rooms. - Looks okay from the outside. Outdated rooms, miserable staff. Overpriceds rooms.
- Ross (7/5): Good service, peaceful location, good value for money - Dinner was good, served quickly and with attentive service
Breakfast was also good - kind to me guests and again with good service I think for the money - not much to dislike
- Vicki (10/5): Exquisite - The fires were roaring when my friends and I arrived for our post Christmas girlie night! And a warmer welcome we could not have asked for on a bitterly cold day. Everything was perfect other than I didnât like the blend of coffee at breakfast but the server made me another one from the coffee machine!
- Michael (9/5): A very comfortable and enjoyable stay only made a little bit short of perfect due to the room being cold - We loved the room its location was great for us we had an evening meal and breakfast and both were very good and value for money .The staff were very friendly and very helpful We found the room to be cold and although the staff looked for a extra heater they were unable to find one but did give us an extra duvet
- Hughes (2/5): Waste of money - Location is good. Itâs dog friendly. Not clean, dirty bedrooms. Very outdated upstairs bedrooms. Mould in bedrooms.
Noisy kitchen fans at night kept us awake. Noisy rooms can hear conversations in other rooms. Staff not attentive. Checked out after first night was meant to stay longer!
- Anita (10/5): Lovely place , great staff , beautiful room - More people should know about this hidden gem Bit chilly in room
- Nick (7/5): Reasonable traditional English country pub - Traditional country pub.
Staff were fantastic, beer and food great
Room large and clean. Room could do with a refresh- paintwork and updated furniture.
The small double bed and sloping mattress can do with replacing.

- JULIA (8/5): Very welcoming and great accommodation and food - Clean and very comfortable N/A
- Riddette-Gregory (8/5): Very comfortable at reasonable price. - Breakfast was perfect. The lady looking after us was so kind. As soon as we entered the dining area she put extra logs on the super fire. She brought us exactly what we ordered and a great big cafetiere of very good coffee. Very pleasant area, comfortable seating and wonderfully decorated for Christmas. Central heating radiator not working. My husband had a look at the TRV, jiggles it a bit and Hey Presto! we had warmth. Bathroom towel warmer was excellent but there was very little space to unpack toiletries - needs a shelf.
