Guest Reviews
- Emma (10/5): Great location - Will definitely be booking again
- Kelly (3/5): - The shower was hot and powerful The cleanliness, the fact that apparently it was undergoing a refurbishment. The room was freezing cold, Duvet cover was stained, there was only 2 hangers to hang clothes, there was paint over the curtains, the net curtain didnt hang properly and had a cigarette burn in it. The head board had greasy hair stain patch, the shower was mouldy and dark. The ceiling had damp patches on it. It was definitely not worth £75. The staff had no idea about parking and the restrictions in place due to the Plymouth marathon. I will not choosing to stay there again, neither did the website through booking.com make us aware of the refurbishment, had I would not have chosen to stay there. The photo of the outside does not look anything like the reality of it. I am very disappointed with the whole thing. Had I have not already paid I would have gone somewhere else to stay that night.
- Lauren (7/5): -
- victoria (2/5): - The location short walk to the town and harbour No breakfast. Laundry and mattresses stored in the breakfast room and used to store the buggies.
There was a Sash window in room that was ajar but broken so couldn't be shut or opened further. The gap was big enough for a small child to fall out of and this window was right next to the bed. The hotel knew we had a small child but no attempt of rectifying this safety issue.
Had to climb onto the bed to access the ensure as the door couldn't open fully.
Serious drain issue with bad smells coming from the bathroom in the morning when everyone in the property was moving around.
Mould in bathroom

- Gareth (10/5): Clean & Comfortable Hotel in a Brilliant Location. - Clean & Comfortable Hotel in a Brilliant Location. City Centre Location Near Seafront. Friendly Helpful Staff.
- Jeff (3/5): - Cheap but clean
- Paisley-Rose (1/5): DO NOT STAY HERE!!! AVOID TAKE YOUR MONEY SOMEWHERE BETTER. - Bed was comfy Where do i start!!
If i could give this a zero star i would this has gotta be the worst place I've ever stayed in!!!! 😡😠
Dust everywhere due to renovations I'm asthmatic so this was really bad and on top of this the manager put me on top floor when requested I requested lower ground due to mobility and breathing issues when booked.
The whole electric socket in the room is run with one extension lead for everything which is over powered with plugs such a hazard.
Room was so cold no matter how many blankets you have.
No hot water for my shower i reported it to the woman but her English and understanding was very poor.
Definitely not worth the money, and the noise of the property is crazy i went away for a quiet 4 days got the complete opposite.
- Shane (5/5): Does the job but feel its lost its old glory - Location is great. Used to use citadel as a child. Nothing like i remember. Found hairs everywhere. Felt a little run down duvet couldn't fit full length
- Emma (6/5): Great bed for the night if attending the Pavillions. - Excellent location near Pavillions.
Comfortable beds, clean. Dated, room needs modernising / decorating.
- Tom (8/5): -
- Robert (3/5): -
- Bryony (1/5): Not great - It was very close to Plymouth pavilions, that was why I chose it. It was clean but very poor condition. Duvet smelt musty. Bathroom concertina door held together with tape. Many stained damp spots on the ceilings. The toilet roll holder was stuck to the wall with filler that hadn't been finished or sanded or painted. No hot water for showering. Tv was tiny and the sound was horrendous! Its advertised as bed and breakfast, no breakfast available. The bed was really uncomfortable, thin mattress, very hard.
- Daniela (4/5): Overall, I wouldn’t stay here but if it improved I’d definitely reconsider. - The view outside was lovely, the staff were absolutely amazing. The theme of the room was nice, towels were folded up neatly. Small nice little tv. 10 minute walk from the Oceanside. Kettle and tea bags and coffee sachets were useful. The curtains were really really nice and actually blacked out the room. 1. The location (felt really unsafe because of the dark corners
2. The room was decently okay but there were stains on the bed and the bedding definitely wasn’t changed after the other customers left as there was also red hair in the bed when we lifted up the bedding (none of us are redheads)
3. There was a dead bug on the lamp.
4. The bathroom water damage is really bad and the showers needed a bit more of a deeper clean
5. There was no close place to plug in chargers or anything
6. WiFi was horrible. Worked for about 5 minutes and then disconnected all the time and that was with all devices
7. There was also some water damage in the room by the window.
- Louise (9/5): A most comfortable night - Lovely little guest house really close to Plymouth Hoe. This is a budget stay but the cleanliness and the quality of the bedding and beds were superior to some much more expensive hotels we've stayed in. They even made beautiful oragami shapes from the towels. Highly recommend. Nothing
- Camila (5/5): - It was not clean, bed sheets dirty and dust everywhere. It need a better maintenance
- Daniel (9/5): -
- Amy (7/5): -
- Kasia (7/5): -
- Eileen (4/5): Adequate but wouldn't want to spend any time there - Location was good. Bed was comfy Decor was tired. Only saw member of staff when I checked in/out. Bathroom needed attention. Black mould the shower. Net curtain torn.
- Steven (3/5): - got a parking ticket
- Sean (7/5): - Host was friendly Rooms were dated, parking was expensive, walls were too thin, and led to awkward moments.
- Balment (4/5): Not for the faint at heart - The lady was kind The ‘view’ was a brick wall — not metaphorically, literally a wall. I’ve had more scenic inspiration looking at the inside of a microwave.
The room was banished to the attic like the hotel was trying to hide us from HMRC. The staircase… absolutely unhinged. Not stairs — a near-vertical pilgrimage. By halfway up I was negotiating with God. By the top I’d gone through all five stages of grief twice.
My mate Scott — who is a big lad and has COPD — tried to tackle it. Honestly, watching him go up those stairs was like watching a medieval siege engine attempt a mountain. The wheeze he produced could’ve powered a small wind farm. I genuinely thought I was going to have to rope him up like a pack mule and haul him to safety.
He brought his brand-new Exeter City bedding to brighten the place, but the room’s energy was so bleak it turned the bedding into a hostage situation immediately. Looked like Exeter had been relegated seven divisions and the bedding was processing the trauma.
The blinds were hanging on like they’d survived a riot, the bathroom gave strong ‘murder documentary reenactment’ vibes, and the whole room felt like it had witnessed too much and wanted to forget.
If emotional damage was a hotel room, this was it.
- Kirsty (8/5): Visiting family - Good value for money. A little bit out of way from centre.
- Stacey (8/5): - The beds were extremely comfortable and the room was warm. Could have done with more milk and larger drinking utensils. Bathroom is a little but cramped but did the job.
- Brogan (8/5): - Great location
- carol (8/5): - The room was nice, clean sheets, free of surface dust, only downsides were dust behind radiator, and grout on tiles needed a good clean. Staff were very polite, helpful and friendly. It is within a 3 minute walk of Plymouth Hoe, and 10 minutes walk from the main shopping district, with plenty of restaurants and fast food franchises. Theres also a few good public houses also. Also a short walk to Plymouth ferry. Its a lovely part of Plymouth and theres lots to be seen and lots to do in season.. out of season a little quiet.
- Steve (2/5): - Booked room with bathroom. They said I didn't. I new I did as always double check it has own bathroom. After argument with staff I got the room I payed for . Will NEVER STAY HERE AGAIN
- Maryam (5/5): -
- Caroline (6/5): Comfortable for the money but in need of TLC badly. - Room was ok, beds clean and comfortable. Bathroom needs an upgrade very quickly as the sink was nearly falling off and the shelf above the toilet was sloping very badly. The shower needs a deep clean but was hot and powerful. The property is quite outdated but the room was big enough and wasn’t cramped to fit in all the beds. Bathroom needs an upgrade badly and the building is very outdated.
- Luke (1/5): Not the best - It was dry Well, smoke alarm going off at stupid times. Staff didn't seem to care. Bed uncomfortable.
- bärbel (7/5): -
- GEMMA (1/5): - I booked the room for my 2 daughters as they were staying to go to the theatre however when they arrived they called me and told me they felt very unsafe, getting to the hotel they had to walk down lots of dirty dark ally ways, the hotel was nothing like the pictures, they were taken up 7 flights of stairs to the very top of a seemingly empty hotel. My youngest was so scared she was crying and shaking at the thought of having to stay there. Luckily they told the only person there that they were leaving and he returned their money
- Colleen (7/5): -
- Delamare (7/5): Was pleasant. - The place was close to the city centre and was quite good value for money compared to other hotels in the area, the guy working was helpful and friendly, even helped me navigate how to use the door when I couldn't unlock it as had a certain way of doing it (not to put the key the whole way in) the bed was clean, the toilet was clean and had clean towels. Shower was great, very warm to my taste and the power I enjoy. I would stay again. Unfortunately the WiFi was appalling and I kept getting disconnected. In the end it was just better to not use it and use my laptop on my hot-spot and the window when I opened it was dirty from the exterior and even had a small group of flies nesting on it which I had to clean away. Also the fire alarm went off at half past 4 this morning which shook me awake. Not the hotels fault.
- Frank Newman (2/5): It was a nightmare - No breakfast was provided The bathroom was mouldy, the bed was so uncomfortable, the chemical smell was literally vomit inducing.
- Sam (6/5): Fine for somewhere to lay your head - The location was very good! The room was dated and we had a dead bug on the lampshade, there is no fan in the bathroom so after a shower the room became damp, towels didn’t dry very well and the toilet roll became damp. There was also a slight smell in the room
- Ann-marie (8/5): -
- Ryan (8/5): Lovely - I enjoyed my thanks
- Mark (8/5): Staff friendly, good location, - Not included it was not included with that deal Air fresher over used.
- Alison (1/5): The place was tiny, not clean, a pube in the showe!! and had broken lamps with exposed wires! Not very safe for a family - The staff were friendly Everything
- Julie (2/5): - Worse pka e i have ever stayed
- Theresa (8/5): -
- Gemma (4/5): Bit of a disappointment - The guy who welcomed us was lovely, took bags up to the room for us. There was black mould in the room on the ceilings, unpainted door frames, toilet holder was held on with silicone but not well as it was broke, the front door didn't close properly. There was a funky damp smell in the room. Beds were not comfortable. There was coat hangers on a couple of hanging pegs to hang clothes no wardrobe. Drawers were stiff you couldn't open them, cups were tiny and wasn't replenished with sugar tea coffee ect.
- Richard (4/5): -
- Samantha (3/5): - Friendly owner, location to Pavilions a few minutes walk away Dated property. No tea in room, just coffee that I couldn't use as I need decaff. Dirty shower and bathroom with mould in shower. Dirty stained bed bases.
Seeking a part refund as I couldn't use bathroom facilities.
- Paul (9/5): Great location and friendly staff - Great location and helpful staff 4 flights of stairs
- Fiona (7/5): -
- faraidoon (6/5): - Bed Bathroom to small
- Philip (8/5): - No breakfast reasonable comfort Maybe a choice of a very basic breakfast
- Simon (9/5): Great Location for excellent value - Great location for a good price
- Mary (9/5): Really lovely time. Would definitely come back - The location and cleanliness Nothing
- Julia (4/5): - The toilet was a shared facility outside of the room so not en suite.
There is no breakfast facility. Bed only
- Alice (9/5): Fab location and super welcoming staff! - A fabulous location and such friendly, and helpful service from the staff! Rooms are clean and perfect for a short weekend stay in Plymouth!
- paul (2/5): Poor very poor - Its location Being mis led by the hotel staff after them telling us where to park and then getting a parking ticket in the morning
- Wrightson (8/5): Ok for somewhere to sleep - Plenty of pillows to choose from. Nice quite area not far from the sea front and the city centre. We booked 3 rooms and one of the rooms at the top the window didn't shut properly. The drawers in some of the rooms knobs kept coming off so would of been nice to know that before hand. Shame they don't do breakfast so feel the price should of been cheaper but had a dining room to offer guests to bring food to eat in there with a working microwave as well.
- Derek (2/5): UNSAFE PLACE TO STAY - There was shouting and banging from upstairs room and mentioned that was a knife involved.
- Rose (6/5): - The location, the room was adequate & clean for the price. The bed was comfortable The residents due to cost this place can attract people from different social biography & culture which can cause difficulties. One of the resident had a fight which cause a furore for others interrupting sleep.
- Hari (5/5): - Location and staff Parking and rooftop room which is long way from ground floor
- Denys (8/5): -
- Darren (8/5): - Ideal for a one night stay, pretty basic but served the purpose. Owner was friendly, helpful and courteous. Parking voucher available for £10 on request.
- Angela (9/5): -
- Kacper (8/5): - Price was ok. Paid with card at the hotel. No problem with parking on the street, but it costed 10 pounds and guy at the hotel gave parking ticket to mark date and registration number. It was quick, easy and no stress. Basically room a little bit needs renovation, but is clean and smells nice. Walls could be renovated a bit. Besides worth to mention in description that parking is on the street and cost 10 pounds per day.
- Cañizares Cantera (6/5): -
- gazwilnott (4/5): Not the best. - Location was nice & close to seafront. Room was not clean and in bad state of repair. Shower door was in bad state. Tape holding it together. Dirt stains on the floor in several places. We didn't stay the 2nd night
Ŵe left and came home .
- DEVAUX (7/5): - Literie confortable, conforme à nos attentes Voisins bruyants
- James (8/5): - The rooms were basic but clean, and the hotel was in a great location. It's was quiet and my kids enjoyed the stay. Beds were a bit hard and bathroom area tho it was clean could do with updating as could the room in general.
- Edward (3/5): - You are joking- the dining room was closed and no food available The only good thing was that it was clean
- Tredinnick (3/5): - Dirty , poor customer service
- Aurora Fusto (8/5): -
- Dawn Robins (8/5): -
- Ilka (3/5): Ok if just wanting a bed for 1 night, definitely not longer ! - The location The room was cramped and toilet not cleaned properly.
Coffee sachets were very old as had solidified.
Asked about parking and was told that yes you had to pay for parking at meter which would have cost 16.50 for night ! Another guest house owner we saw on street said that to ask again as you should get a guest rate . Went back & asked again and only then he told me that it would be £8 . So luckily we saw that other B&B person otherwise would have paid double !
This information should have been given on website .
- Ian (9/5): -
- Grae (3/5): - Poor hygiene level. Wallpaper coming off the wall. Didn't even want to check the mattress
- Dimitri (8/5): - Everything nice
- 杨 (3/5): 非常不好 - 除了地理位置都很差,墙皮掉在床上,洗澡和卫生间极小,被子上也有灰尘,床垫特别不舒服,好像睡在弹簧上。

- Sarah (1/5): Walked away and booked alternative accomodation - Arrived and walked out to book alternative accommodation.
Dirty, no sink to wash hands in public toilet.
Never made it to room to check in! Arrived and walked out to book alternative accommodation.
Dirty, no sink to wash hands in public toilet.
Never made it to room to check in!
- Susannah (6/5): Cheap, basic, no frills - The hotel used to offer B&B, and always had a good reputation, which was why i booked. I did not realise until we arrived that it is a shadow of its former self. Only now offering cheap room only options. The room was not en suite, i would expect that from a provider in 2025, and did not realise this at time of booking, as we would not have stayed here. The whole hotel needs updating, the room was basic, the mattress was very uncomfortable and we did not get a good nights sleep. If you are looking for basic, cheap accommodation and don't want frills then this hotel is for you. We, how, will not be staying again.
- ann (7/5): Great location , comfy bed - Friendly staff, good location, comfy bed 53 steps to room 11
Room on a slant
Tea & coffee , kettle on a very low table
In need of a good make over , looks very tired , but it was a comfy bed , just needs a little TLC
- Sarah (3/5): Citadel House Hotel- unclean - Location to central Plymouth Building very run down, in need of a good redecoration and a good clean. Very dusty, dirty woodwork, fixtures, stain on wall/ ceiling, mould on bedroom curtains
- Mark (5/5): Not the best - The location. Beds really uncomfortable, weird smell in the hallway.
No breakfast available yet it’s meant to be a bed and breakfast.
- Hannah-louise (10/5): - Sucks we had to pay got parking but all good Had to pay for parking
- Mark (8/5): Good value accommodation for price and location for one nights stay while attending local concert - Very central location, especially for the city centre, theatres and the Hoe - comfortable room for one nights sleep, no frills The room could have been a little cleaner and better presented; however, it was good for the price point
- Stephanie (10/5): Perfect for what we wanted it for. Great value for money. -
- Ellen (7/5): -
- MARTINA (8/5): Would highly recommend. It was clean and tidy and the owner was very welcoming and attentive ! - The property was very clean and tidy Could not complain about the property
- andrew (5/5): Ok for a night - Price and location good Bed not that comfortable very small tv room small and very small bathroom
- Sarha (6/5): - Very oldie worldy, place was very clean and staff we're helpful the only downside no toilet it our room just a shower, we was lucky our room was right next door to us!
- Melanie (2/5): - Was told was having a share bathroom that was not stated on the booking so had to pay extra and it also said we had we had breakfast included on arrival the man said there was mo breakfast. Couldn’t wait to leave.
- Lewis (5/5): June 2025 - The staff were very friendly and helpful, the room was clean The room and the whole of the guest house needs updating, painting
- Lynda (8/5): - Was a good location for what we needed!
- Elizabeth (8/5): - Location, room and staff Someone knocking on my door 2 nights in a row
- Lorna (4/5): Comfy beds, a two night stay for a wedding was enough, I wouldn't want to stay longer! - Great location, quiet too. Parking was £8 a day, we were on the third floor, lot of stairs! We're in our sixties! Unnecessary cushions on the bed and a foot mat in the bathroom which didn't look clean, also a slow shower, tiny sink too.
- Rachel (8/5): - The member of staff was professional, friendly and helpful Curtains were a bit thin so let in the light
