Guest Reviews
- Mr Jean (10/5): - The location is in the very centre of Bulawayo, with walking distance to both the Art Gallery (10 min) and The Natural History Museum (15 min). There are plenty of fast-food and restaurant options within minutes by foot from the hotel. Also, very easy to arrange pick-up/drop-off at the hotel as all tour operators doing excursions to Khami ruins, Great Zimbabwe ruins and Matobo NP know it.
The Selborne Hotel is clean, neat and I recommend it. Excellent location and very helpful staff.
Some details in my room would need an update, but all in all a really pleasant stay!
- Noel (4/5): - This hotel has seen better days and is a shadow of its former self. There was a problem with our reservation which meant we were given poor rooms with no air con and missing bulbs, linen, and varying levels of amenities (showers, water, etc). We were moved after a night but the rooms don’t match the website photos. One of the bathrooms was unusable due the smell and heat. The hotel is good for location in the city centre, and the garden and pool are pleasant but feel tired and only given basic maintenance)do not believe the pool photo on the website!
The main redeeming feature is the staff and how hard a couple of them worked to make our stay better; their enthusiasm was undermined by the limitations of the hotel to supply things like adequate bedding or simple things like light bulbs. Stay here for very basic amenities and the locations but not for a really comfortable stay.
- Tiare (10/5): - Had a wonderful time and the staff were incredibly helpful. Christina in particular was super kind and had great recommendations for where to eat and always looked out for me (especially as a solo female traveller). Definitely recommend!
- Elizabeth (10/5): - Was sceptical at first as the place had drastically deteriorated. The place went under a complete makeover and the rooms are fantastic and everything works.Only downside is there aren’t many TV channels to choose from.Fairly priced and convenient as well.
- roberttatendaz (10/5): Wide range of different rooms to choose from. Each room is unique - Recently renovated, it’s basically a brand new hotel! Their service is incredible, the staff are friendly and always willing to help. It’s located in town so everything is easily accessible and there is plenty of parking space
- Mbirasafaris (10/5): Give it a trial - Very convenient, smart and comfortable for a good sleep, business meeting, workshop and for a holiday. Strategically placed in the CBD which makes it one of the best and competitive hotels for travelers who seeks organised travelling. Get your discount by booking through +263773262491.
- Phillimon (8/5): Selborne Hotel Experience - The hotel rooms are ok, but the problem is unreliable internet connection and no choice TV channels.
The Staff are very friendly...
- dandirap (8/5): My stay at Selbourne Hotel - It was clean. Good rooms ,good ventilation and a nice reception .Would recommend those willing to spend time near town with their families to reduce extra costs.Keep up the standard Selbourne team ,cant wait to come back again
- juliar953 (10/5): Christine Rukanda & her staff offer excellent, attentive hotel service to visitors - I had the pleasure to stay at the Selborne Hotel in February 2022. Christine Rukanda, the Selborne Hotel manager & her staff ensured my stay was memorable. Located in the City Centre, meant I could walk to my business meetings, and daily enjoy elements of the Bulawayo city life. My room was delightful, with a spacious balcony augmenting the private living area. The hotel caters for vegetarian meals, and i sampled delicious dishes of traditional foods such as sadza and fresh greens. Highly recommended.
- Zine (10/5): General comment - Selborne Hotel is home away from home. Christine and team give the place a warm touch. The rooms are top notch and the Wi-Fi is excellent. However, the outside and furniture reception area look ‘tired’ and outdated. It hardly reflects the high standard of decor and modern upgrades characteristic of the rooms.
- Simba (10/5): - Very convenient location. Great homeliness atmosphere and nice vintage vibe
- 694shanteld (10/5): Food Fest - Selborne Hotel is situated very centrally in town and is really a gem. With beautiful gardens and swimming pool, it comes as no surprise that the food is exquisite. The menu ranges from chicken and chips to Chinese, Pakistani curries, etc. You would think that they would excel in a certain type of food but we were pleasantly surprised that whatever type of food was ordered was made to perfection. The food is adorned on the plate which enhances the eating experience. Pricing is very reasonable and portions generous. Definitely a place to visit over and over again.
Ps the milkshakes are to die for.
- Marcel (10/5): Great place, great staff - Amazing colonial style hotel with very helpful staff, great restaurant, beautiful garden and convenient parking. Large balcony facing the street but not noisy. Special thanks to MacDonald who helped me find fuel. He was very helpful and humble. Overall great stay.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - V kind and helpful staff.
However rooms v v noisy due to it being above the Kings Inn that was pumping out beats until 0300!
- thisamandas (10/5): Lovely rooms, super staff - My stay at the Selborne Hotel was excellent. Christine at the front desk is a gem - friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the outside area around the pool offers the perfect respite.
- busanijb (10/5): ideal location with also the best food - situated in the city center ,perfect rooms with air condition ,a beautiful garden outside featured with a swimming pool and also good food at the restaurant .best place to be is it holiday ,honeymoon or you in town for business meeting with selborne you wont regret it ....the best part you can also have your weeding be it a conference as the hotel also has a beautiful hall for all your functions that you may think of
- w0rshipm (10/5): Ideal location and great place to stay - great transformation in the rooms they have upgraded greatly.the service is great and they have a fantastic restaurant.Prices are reasonable and it is safe for anyone travelling .i enjoyed my stay. will be back
- Tamaradesu (10/5): Ideal location - Situated in the City Center. Rooms Impeccable!! with all amenities, one could not ask for any better. Prices are reasonable, the restaurant is fantastic with the variety of delicious dishes to choose from probably the most tastiest food in Bulawayo. The service is great, the staff are friendly and helpful. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Will be back!!!
- tinoeboss (10/5): great and quite place to stay - the location is quite convenient and safe for anyone travelling with a family. The service and hospitality is quite awesome. i would recommend this place for anyone travelling with his/her family. its a great and quite place to stay.
- 165lizzieb (10/5): Great Place to Stay - We stayed here for the week with our family. Our experience was great. Despite many peoples negative perceptions about the city center, we felt extremely safe as the hotel is located adjacently to the police station and is right opposite of city hall. The rooms were beautiful , clean, and comfortable and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The restoration/ renovations are all coming up very nicely! The hotel restaurant was also great!
- lovenessm2019 (10/5): Great place - Had an absolutely wonderful stay. The restaurant food was amazing, the room was spotless and modern and had the most comfortable nights sleep. Have to also mention the staff who were very professional and accommodating. Would highly recommend the place and will definitely be back again.
- Sightsee18119044234 (8/5): intresting deal - it was nice would go back there any given day,the staff there is friendly, food is nice .love the bar area and it has a friendly invironment.would recommend it to any1 visting bulawayo.the rates are good
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Good room, helpful staff and good internet. This property works best as a business hotel. However many parts of the property are in disrepair and a refurbishment program is underway (not complete). This means dust and noise. Guests who are not from Southern Africa may find some aspects of this property challenging.
- 75razr (10/5): Biggest upgrade of any hotel in the Bulawayo! - The transformation of Selborne Hotel is very impressive to say the least. Saw this hotel before and after. Every corner of every room has been upgraded and refreshed to make it look brand new. It's a must see for any visitor, really is impressive what has been done and they continue to make improvments by listening to their customers! A new standard has been set.
- Knitwit (2/5): - Hotel was under construction. No hot water. Dust everywhere.
- dbrown867 (10/5): Home away from home - Rooms and staff were top notch. Made me feel very welcomed and comfortable. They seem to have an excellent grasp of customer service. Can't get a more central location in Bulawayo. Room was beautiful, had a large balcony which I enjoyed with an evening drink :), and the breakfast was delicious. Look forward to coming back again soon!
- hansv201 (8/5): Middle in Centre Bulawayo - Selborn hotel is a landmark in Bulawayo.
Colonial style still available. Rooms are nice with balconies. At time my visit still very much under renovation with lot of noise. No management. Only a receptionist. Guided parking in front of the door.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - It was to noisy, the restaurant was under renovation, wifi worked very poorly and only in the reception area.
- 971anony (10/5): Wonderful experience full of surprises - I don't usually write reviews but after my experience at Selborne hotel I felt I had to. My wife and I were skeptical having read the two different reviews here, but we were pleasantly surprised upon arrival as it seems like hotel has really done some major renovations since. The rooms were beautiful and exceptionally clean and the staff, particularly the receptionist, were very friendly and accommodating. The bathroom amenities were something to speak of as they thought of everything we could possibly need and the products were very of a very high quality. We absolutely loved the showers, haven't seen them before and wanted to stay in there all day!! The lights were beautiful as well, everything was very modern. The complimentary welcome package really put a smile on our faces and made us feel very appreciated. Even the teas and coffees were something we haven't seen in hotels before. The only advice I would give is for then to advertise more instead of being a hidden gem, and to update their info. Also would ask for the restaurant to improve. The meals weren't bad but certainly didn't blow us away like the rooms did. Was told the restaurant is the next thing they are working on and will be brought to the same standards in the near future. After my experience with the accommodation, I really look forward to it. The bars were also one of the best and cleanest I've been to in the city centre. Wish the hotel all the best and will definitely be staying here again as well as recommending it to friends and family. Keep up the great work!
- LnG270 (6/5): Pretty ordinary - Based on the only other review I could see decided to try this hotel. Very helpful friendly lady at reception. Room was large - more like a unit with an outside balcony overlooking the street but the price should have been an indication of what to expect. Fridge was a bonus. A fan was good and because it wasn't too hot it was adequate. No air conditioning. Cockroach in drawer I opened. Tiles missing and chipped in bathroom. No overhead shower and the flexible hand held shower head had a leak that went everywhere. Water barely luke warm. Had to ask for a replacement cord for jug because cord was frayed and dangerous. No coffee supplied just a handful of no name tea bags. Value for money? Probably, because you get what you pay for and the room was around $50 US or equivalent a night. A plus is the very central location. Only there two nights and hardly in so put up with it but wouldn't go back.
- Gillsine (8/5): Reasonable hotel with a good location! - Selborne hotel is situated in Bulawayo city center. The hotel is very reasonable, and gives you good value for your money. It’s a bit dated, but is clean, safe and has a friendly staff.
The hotel has its own restaurant, and two bars. One of the bars, Terrace, is outside the hotel, and is very popular with both locals and tourists. There is often live music playing.
My room had a comfy bed with a cooling roof fan over it , a bathroom, a kettle, complimentary bags of coffee/tea and a TV, what more can one ask for?
Because of the location and the value for money, I will definitely use this hotel next time I visit Bulawayo!
