- Alberto (1/5): Harassed by Staff, Police Called - Nothing good about this place. This was the worst and most unsafe experience I have ever had at a hotel/hostel. Duo Nomad and Duo Housing are managed by the same company, so expect the same type of treatment in both.
On September 26, 2024, I was forcibly removed from Duo Nomad with police present — even though I had broken no rules. Here is exactly what happened:
• The front desk employee approached me and asked if I was extending my stay or checking out. He already knew I was a guest. Then he demanded my full name, and when I only gave my first name, he left.
• He came back aggressively, verbally insulting me and claiming he was “the owner,” when in reality he was only the receptionist. At no point did he show me any employee ID — for all I knew, he could have been just another guest.
• I showed him my Booking.com reservation, with confirmation number and PIN, proving I was a legitimate guest. Despite this, he continued harassing me, followed me toward my room, and kept insulting me.
• I called Booking.com to get help, but he yelled over me repeatedly, making it impossible to hear the agent clearly. When he realized I was ignoring him and talking to Booking instead, he threatened to call the police to have me removed.
• He actually called the police, who arrived and told me that “this is private property and if management wants you out, you’re out.” I was forced to leave, even though neither the staff nor the police could point to any rule I had broken.
This was harassment, humiliation, and abuse of authority. The manager on duty later confirmed that the employee did not have to show me any ID, but still insisted I should hand over mine. Management clearly protects abusive behavior from staff instead of protecting guests.
I strongly advise against booking here. If something goes wrong, you will have no protection — staff can insult you, harass you, and even call the police on you without cause. Unsafe and unacceptable.
- Dayana (1/5): Hotel aconchegante - Quarto e cama confortáveis. Banheiro aconchegante.

- Guest (4/5): - The location next to the subway and market was great, and the staff was very professional. Breakfast was not available on 5 of the 10 days of my stay. The mattress was probably old and very soft.
- Megan (8/5): - First time in a hostel, it was great for the price and the staff was friendly. Very quiet, they were at about half of their capacity. Booked the room with one bunk bed (total gamble as a single woman traveler) but had it to myself for my entire stay. There is a Trader Joe’s nearby which is great because they have a shared kitchen. Great location, near the metro, eastern market, post office, CVS, groceries and basically everything you could need. Would stay again (with shower shoes this time).
- LeonardRay (5/5): Like being honestly at peace. - It’s located fairly close to everything.! I’m liking everything except the fact that I had to checkout!.

- Farley (10/5): Super agradável - Atendimento espetacular do Gabriel, brasileiro super dedicado.
- Preetesh (6/5): Cute but a bit out of the way - Cute little place with a nice simple pancake breakfast. Beds are very comfortable. Shower situation is not ideal and the AC is blasting away making it super cold after you shower. The location is ok near a metro station but for the price definitely not ideal.
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good -
- Laura (10/5): Exceptional - Pancakes for breakfast.
Easy to book.
Comfortable bed.
Friendly, helpful staff. They need to make the traveler aware that they'll need to bring their own lock for securing their luggage.
Otherwise, everything went well.
- Santiago (9/5): Superb - Beautiful neighbourhood, loved to see how those old houses look in the inside. Breakfast was only pancakes but they let me take as much as I wanted and they were warm and fluffy My room had an emergency exit sign that glowed red all night and wouldn't let us sleep, we had to cover it with a towel lol
- William (6/5): - Close to restaurants, CVS and metro
- Ieva (10/5): Exceptional - Iliked everything. It was clean place and I had clean sheets. Breakfast was amazing!
- Ieva (10/5): Exceptional - It was very clean hostel. Also I loved freshly baked pancakes! You could eat as much as you want
- Vishal (7/5): Good -
- Anonymous (4/5): Disappointing -
- Olga (6/5): Pleasant - It’s quite clean and the staff is mostly nice The breakfast is just pancakes and simple coffee. The price is too high for no reason
- Williams (9/5): Superb - Price could have been better Men's room downstairs. Stairway difficult to walk.
- Ali (10/5): Exceptional - Good amenities and excellent customer service
- Lennyn (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (4/5): Disappointing -
- Vũ (9/5): Superb - I love and enjoy the place
- Joseph (7/5): Amazing location near Capitol Hill! Complimentary pancakes every morning—loved it! - Amazing location near Capitol Hill! Complimentary pancakes every morning—loved it! Amazing location near Capitol Hill! Complimentary pancakes every morning—loved it!
- Michael (10/5): Great place to stay. - It was amazing, when I went to the parade. Thanks.
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional - The location was excellent, super close to the metro and a ton of shops and restaurants in the eastern market area. My room had an emergency exit door with a bright red sign that glowed brightly throughout the night.
- Anonymous (4/5): Disappointing -
- Doğukan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Moon (10/5): Exceptional - Staff professional An iron
- Farkhat (10/5): Exceptional - I felt completely at home in this hostel. It’s very cozy, clean, and welcoming. The breakfast, especially the omelette, was absolutely delicious. I would definitely come back again!
- Alessandro (8/5): Very good -
- Wendy (10/5): I'd recommend it to anyone. - The location was perfect for walking to the Mall and museums. There is nothing more I could have asked for given the location, price, and other travelers.
- Srikant121 (6/5): Passable stay..Not recommended - It was closer to Eastern Markets metro.. Walkin 5 minutes from the metro.
It has a park nearby and also wharf is 20 min walk which is a great place to hangout.
Wifi strength was good, bathroom amd showers were clean. They gave a tour of house which is nice.
You can cook your own food, heat so kitchen is available. Luggage storage facility is available where they keep even after checkout for free. The 2 people that I met who manage the property are well spoken and friendly.
Small Patio is there at roof top which is nice.manage 3 unisex washroom for entire house and 2 shower for men/2 for women in a house full of Approximately 20 dorm beds.
That is way too less so you might have to wait for sometime to get your turn.
Doesn't provide shower gels and shampoo so bring on your own.
Locker are very small so you could lock only your backpack
Beds/mattresses are not very good quality..it makes a lot of noise while twist and turns. 72$ deserves a nice mattress to sleep atleast.
- Maurer (8/5): Very good -
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great experience, but building very tight! - The location was phenomenal. GPS may give you false walking directions. If you're using public transit, so know when you get off at Eastern Market Station, is simply walk two blocks SE down Pennsylvania Avenue. That's it. The hostel is in the middle of the block between 9th and 10th streets on the left. But the building is very tight! This is an old building easily older than a century and maybe even older than that. What is used as a office desk to check you in, is actually someone standing in the entry quarter which is very narrow. Like all hostels, you take your shoes off and the best you can do is try and sit on the shoe rack and stay out of the way of the person standing to check you in. From there, recognize that this hostel is absolutely, positively, NOT disability accessible! These are very narrow, winding, steep stairs. You have to just lean your body into the wall, hoist yourself up one stair at a time, and do the best you can to pull your luggage up. Once in the rooms, they are extremely tight. They do have lockers for you to lock your personal belongings, but these are small lockers. There is absolutely no furniture in the room except bunk beds. But, the living room area is comfortable, and there is a nice little deck on the third floor that you can sit in up to 9:00. The attendant on duty when we were there, made pancakes in the morning, and they were some of the best pancakes we ever had! What truly made this place spectacular were the staff! Extremely nice!
- Luis (8/5): Very good price - Very nice suburb in Washington DC with a supermarket and a metro station nearby. Also, they served a great breakfast consisting of pancakes. The staff was very professional and was always around. Overall, I had a great stay in Duo Nomad. For the price, there wasn't anything bad to mention. Although, I felt like some things were not very secure as I left my suitcases to get later in the day of my checkout, and they didn't have any way of ensuring someone else couldn't take them. In the other hand, they do have lockers for some small stuff.
- Christopher (4/5): Disappointing -
- Seethalakshmi (10/5): Friendly and Economical - The people! Very friendly, helpful and encouraging. I wish I had gotten more chances to interact with them. I had read about the chocolate chip pancakes in reviews, so decided to shelve my diet for the day and gave them a shot and they were a solid ten! I was there only for a night and was overall happy with my choice. The building is pretty thin-walled and creaky, so it took a lot of effort to fall asleep. But if the priority is to spend a night or two in a safe place with the basic amenities without having to spend too much money (other hotel options around the time were at least 200 dollars more!), this is a brilliant place to crash!
A suggestion from me to the staff would be to consider setting up locker options!
- Sherman (7/5): Good -
- Michael (9/5): Great place to stay in DC! - Location is great. If you are visiting capital hill friends and family this can’t be beat. You can walk to a Nationals game or take a two blck walk to Eastern market and the metro will get you to the Smithsonian in a few minutes- 3 or 4/stops. very clean. Management is very friendly and efficient. Well run .
- Trees (10/5): Excellent - Such a lovely stay, friendly staff, peaceful, clean, great roof top space. Easy from DCA on metro to Eastern Market. Short walk to Capitol.
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anthony (6/5): - I want to give a 4/5 just because how good of a host Lamonte was, but this could also be a 2/5 for lack of or confusing amenities hence my 3-star rating.
The interesting thing is you take off your shoes when you enter which leads to it being cleaner than it otherwise would be except for the kitchen which was still sticky. Warning: the lockers will not fit large luggage and may not even fit a normal backpack depending on which lockers are available when you arrive. If you're paranoid about leaving your stuff in your room which is not locked either, don't bring large bags. You can't use a thick lock either, conveniently there is a hardware store across the street, 1.25in. lock works.
The upstairs lounge and deck close at 10pm for quiet hours leaving the downstairs one usable until midnight. You can always go there cuz that's where the bathrooms are & showers for men. Awkward locations, but it's an old charming house.
Breakfast is pancakes and lemonade but when I went down, nobody was there, just pancake batter. Probably people ate earlier and figured no one was coming after. Officially I think it ends at 9:30 and I was there just before 9.
Lastly, I got rushed to leave. Check out is 11am, they were confused when my phone was charging on the bed and I was eating upstairs at 10. 10min before check out, I'm finishing brushing my teeth and bro is fed up with me. A reminder is fair, but is it a crime to check out before 11? Make it earlier if you want people to leave earlier.
- Chakraborty (6/5): Good location but dorm rooms does not have door locks - The location is very near to the visiting places. The dorm rooms do not have seperate locks. Anybody can come in anytime. I felt a little insecure as a solo female traveller.
There is no locker in the room, only small size lockers are available at 2nd floor.
- Nataliia (9/5): Highly recommended to book for staying in DC. Location, price and service are really good! - The staff is incredibly attentive and helpful — and they make the best pancakes in the morning!
- Lukas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Arion (10/5): It was amazing -
- linyi (6/5): - Rooms are a bit small but everything else is worth the price
- Jeffrey (7/5): Good -
- Bulanov (8/5): Hostel with great location - Standart hostel with great location and friendly workers. Location is the best about it.
- Callista (8/5): Very good -
- Jakob (5/5): meh -
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Li-goyette (5/5): Good if you are in town for 1-2 days or if you need a place on small budget. - Staff is friendly, Wifi is good and the location is exceptional. You don't have access to a lot of space. If you are there for 1-2 days it's OK, but after a while it gets very crowded. Also not a fan of the way the different rooms work, with them closing at specific time. If you want to stay up late to work, for example, there's just no way to do it, which was detrimental to my trip. Also, I appreciated that breakfasts are included, but pancakes everyday is a bit of a letdown after a couple of mornings. Some variation wouldn't be too pricey to think about.
- Calmea (10/5): Exceptional -
- ???(???-?????????) (2/5): - They said there is no room for me…
It’s awful
I will not use Expedia
You spoiled my travel
I have to get a refund right now!!!

- Noam (6/5): Pleasant -
- Rodriguez (9/5): Superb -
- Tong (9/5): Superb -
- Otterbeck (8/5): Very good -
- Marisa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Quezia (10/5): Awesome. Would stay again and again - Great staff. Very clean rooms and a great location..near from capitol and around 3 block from the metro. Simple breakfast: pancakes and coffee. But its enough.
- Matilda (8/5): Banging - Staff were very helpful and kind.
Facilities exceeded expectations for an American hostel. Location is very good for walking to sites, but the local area made me feel a little bit uncomfortable as a solo traveller.
- Babak (10/5): Exceptional -
- Claudio (10/5): Unbeatable for a less than a week. - Duo Nomad is hands down the best hostel experience I’ve had in DC out of my seven stays. The staff is absolutely amazing—extremely friendly, helpful, and always ready to assist with anything you need. They truly make the place feel welcoming and comfortable.
The location is great, especially if your focus is the National Mall and major landmarks. While it’s a bit farther if you prefer walking to Dupont or Logan Circle, the convenience of being just one block from the metro more than makes up for it. You can get anywhere in the city with ease.
Considering the combination of price, location, and overall friendliness, this is by far the best value you’ll find in DC. Highly recommend! The restroom and ahower were a bit small and lacked privacy, but completely reasonable in a hostel context.
- Mothier (10/5): Exceptional - It felt very homely and the staff was really sweet. Breakfast included was a real plus! Great location as well.
- Hammad (8/5): Very good -
- Asante (9/5): Superb -
- Mujaju (7/5): Good stay - Cleanliness Nothing
- Adriana (5/5): This was a shared room, which wasn’t clear at the moment of booking - Location was excellent The room was very small and super hot
- Amber (7/5): Good - The place wasn't dusty, I woke up with a clear throat, the staff was helpful and inviting, I'd tip if I had cash and not card, had breakfast
- Tj (10/5): A lively setting with unbeatable access to D.C.'s top attractions! - Impeccably clean, thoughtfully organized, and meticulously maintained.
- Deanna (1/5): Don’t allow sick people to stay in the dorms - It was close to the metro station and relatively clean.. They put a very sick person in a small six room dorm. Someone with a sore throat, coughing, trouble breathing. I alerted the front desk and they essentially said, “oh well” we have no other places..I offered the sick person a mask, but he was coughing so violently he took it off. And it was the only mask I had! I’m not paranoid but sleeping three feet from a violently I’ll person is a recipe for disaster.
In any case, there was no way to be protected from getting sick, the office didn’t have masks. So I left at 1 a.m. and asked for a refund. None was given.
Apparently they’ll allow super sick people to stay in the dorms. Even though I left, I got the flu anyway. In short, never again!
- Jesse (8/5): Very good -
- Donald (10/5): I would stay again. - Great location and area. 15 minute walk to the US Capitol and 2 blocks from the Metro. Common area was a little small with limited seating.
- Mawdsley (6/5): It's okay. - I liked the location. The bed was comfortable. There were some issues, but overall an okay experience. The rooms were a furnace. There was no lock on the room door. The bathrooms/shower were on the wrong floor. There is a two centimetre gap in the door to the men's shower room, which so happens to be on the hallway to the kitchen. The latch on the lockers only fit small locks.
- Iqbal (8/5): Friendly staff and worth money -
- Cheolwan (8/5): Very good -
- Marina (7/5): Good -
- Howard (10/5): - .
- Fernando (7/5): Good in general. - The Pancakes were good. The AC was throwing water.
- Shashanka (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paulo (6/5): Pricy for what is provided - The location is excellent, close to Metro, supermarket, and main tourist spots. The staff isn't very friendly and receptive. I arrived a bit earlier than check-in time and I wanted to drop my luggage before heading out to my commitment. The staff who welcomed me was skeptical and I felt a bit of resistance to allow me leave my stuff before check-in. The common area is super close to the toilet which is too small.
- Seppe (8/5): Very good - Suberb location close to the metro and Capitol, grocery store and some restaurant are also very close. The hostel is a cosy townhouse with a chill vibe and plenty of place to hang out.
Everything was cleaned daily and the breakfast pancakes were good Very warm in my dorm from the heating, toilets aren't on the same floor and there's no laundry.
- Lynda (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hsieh (8/5): Very good -
- Haytham (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mary (4/5): Disappointing -
- Denis (4/5): Disappointing - Location is good, undergound station is nearby Breakfat is poor, just 1 shitty waffle. I needed a place to spent 1 one night before futher trip. My plane was delayed and I was charged $50 for the late check-in that was the same proce that I paid for the booking
- Richard (10/5): Convenient and economical. When I return I will likely look them up. - Proximity to destination and late check in time availability. I realize taking off shoes at the door is required but I’m not use to walking around in socks or barefoot.
- Diana (7/5): Good -
- Diana (7/5): Good - The staff was very kind and collaborative. The location is great and just an 8-minute walk from the metro station The room had an unusual odor.
- Richard (5/5): Passable -
- Antonius (10/5): Exceptional - Absolutely amazing staff & volunteers!! I love how cozy they made the place. Amazing for meeting new people.
- Branko (8/5): It was memorable - Location, access to Metro and Grocery store It was a bit small for my concept of a hostel.
Stuff were helpful but sometimes I had a feeling that I am in someone’s house and there are a bit too many rules. Anyway, nothing negative. I would love to return.
I would suggest you to have an ironing board available for use.
