Guest Reviews
- Debbie (10/5): - We absolutely loved our stay at the cottage next to The Weary Friar!! The pub staff were amazing, so friendly! And the food was delicious! Definitely a place to return to!!!!
- Tracey (10/5): Great, proper country pub with b&b! - I booked two nights for myself and my 12 yr old daughter. I was looking for somewhere with a bit of character, that was away from all the noise and bustle, had a good breakfast to set us up for the day and food available in the evening. I was not disappointed. The Weary Friar was such a great little find, a proper country pub with great food (nothing too fancy), friendly staff and peace and quiet to wake up to. Will definitely head there again!
- jim (10/5): - Just a friendly warm place to stay
- Linda (8/5): - Fantastic Friendly staff...Good Food..
Clean room...Just a buzzing noise kept me awake....But would def return if in the area.
- karen (8/5): Quirky, old friendly pub. - Beautiful, quirky old building with a lovely pub downstairs.
The staff we encountered were very friendly and polite.
Note that it can be challenging to drive there if you follow certain phone directions like we did! But when we left we were told an easier way to leave the immediate area and that was so much better.
- Matt (10/5): The Friar's Rest - Had a brilliant few nights at The Weary Friar. We stayed in The Friar’s Rest, which is a separate cottage just next to the pub. Really peaceful and quiet — perfect for switching off. The cottage was spotless, well looked after, and had everything we needed, including a proper kitchen (though we mostly ate at the pub!).
Breakfast was great every morning — decent portions and really good quality. We had dinner there a couple of times as well — can highly recommend the fish and chips. The pub itself is really welcoming, with a nice atmosphere, and the staff were lovely — friendly, helpful, and made everything easy from the moment we arrived.
The surrounding area is beautiful, proper countryside. Plenty of parking too, and it was easy to find. All in all, a great little break — would definitely go back.
- Paul (10/5): Recommended - Arrived late so didn’t eat but very good quality breakfast
Lovely spot.
- Adrian (10/5): - Great place to stay and good beers and food too.
- Nicholas (10/5): Lovely place. - Great friendly staff. Lovely old pub / hotel. Food excellent. Service first class. Amazing breakfast too
- Tim (10/5): - Lovely place to stay with friendly owners and staff. Always very helpful and breakfasts were top!
- Gareth (10/5): - Nice staff good food
- Andrew (10/5): - Nice place
- Julie (10/5): - In the deep countryside yet popular with locals and visitors. Great pub restaurant vibe. Breakfast could be improved with fresh fruit and yoghurts available. The staff were absolutely on the ball.
- Robert (10/5): Character and Value - Great stay - good food, good beer, friendly service, lovely location and characterful building - good value to boot
- Keith (10/5): - Breakfast was filling.
- STUART (8/5): Lovely staff - Very clean, amazing place for its age. Food good, very friendly staff.
- Colin (8/5): - A weird mix, to start, it is a beautiful spot with lovely views next door to an old church. Nice warm welcome, lovely clean, comfortable room. The bed was comfortable, the area very quiet so expect a good sleep!
There is a nice note about the new staff working so please be patient, but some basics were just missed. I watched tables being wiped down where the food was just brushed onto the floor, the tables themselves were sticky. I saw four tables go to the bar and ask to pay their bill. The food is ok, I would certainly debate how much is frozen food compared to the "home cooked" I just feel for the money asked to stay, a higher quality of food and basic service could be expected.
- Peter (10/5): - Friendly service
- Stewart (8/5): - Lovely place and village and although we were eating out the meal options looked good and the breakfast was lovely.
Downside, difficult getting a taxi, got one in the end but definitely pre book taxi as early as you can, other occasions, I wouldn’t of needed a taxi, only a minor thing this, would stay again though
- Andrew (10/5): - A quiet and comfortable stay. Welcoming place
- Bruce G (10/5): Paradise and beyond - What a lovely hotel .. everything I was expecting and more .. the staff were excellent and helpful … the breakfast was excellent.. will definitely be back
- Hugh (6/5): OK but not outstanding - Friendly and helpful staff, An old and historic building, out of the way, beware the narrow Cornish roads. Stayed 2 nights, overall level of cleanlisness was average. Even though a resident, being asked to settle bill in restaurant before being able to sit outside for dessert was demeaning.
- Christopher (6/5): Nice people. Rubbish breakfast. Poor mattress. - The staff were all lovely, The mattress I slept on was really uncomfortable and needed to be changed! The restaurant food in the evening was really good which made it strange that the breakfast was really disappointing! Rubbish cheap sausages, one small slice of bacon and cold coffee.
- dennis (10/5): - Staff very helpful
- david (8/5): - Really nice pub in a lovely location, nice comfortable room, great food and beer. What more could you ask for. Will stay here again.
- Ian (8/5): - A village inn in essence, bigger than expected, well looked after and clean with pleasant, helpful staff. Plenty of parking and quiet. Good bar choice and would stay there again. The only slight letdown was the Sunday roast lunch which was over-cooked and tasted and looked like it had been kept warm for hours. The other meals were adequate.
- l.b.kennerley (8/5): Good service and comfortable - Really cosy place
- lisa (10/5): A hidden treasure - Cannot fault friendliness of the staff nor the food. Absolutely amazing service from Amanda, Daisy and Aaron and the rest of the team here. It’s my first visit and I’ve already booked to stay for each month for the rest of the year due to work. Large carpark, good WiFi, safe and welcoming. What more could you want. It’s a hidden treasure.
- Alan (6/5): Lovely staff, disappointing otherwise - The one real positive during this stay was the staff, they were all very friendly and welcoming from arrival through to breakfast so thank you. However, the stay itself was quite disappointing. The room was cold, the basic bathroom was freezing and the bed was uncomfortable and you can feel the springs. The food was sadly very average at best and if I had paid separately for breakfast I would have asked for my money back. I’m not a hater but I won’t be staying again and wouldn’t recommend it (sorry to the fabulous staff).
- Lorraine (8/5): Weekend stay - Lovely friendly greeting atmosphere was great
Food lovely we really enjoyed our stay and the would definitely go back
- Alyson (10/5): Superb - All the staff are so welcoming, friendly and chatty. The food, both evening meal and breakfast, was delicious. The room was comfortable and cosy. This is such a wonderful place to stay. We will be back :-)
- Andrew (8/5): - Really quite enjoyed this little pub stay. Tuesday night is bell ringing practice at the neighboring church until nine so parking is a premium if arriving late. Busy friendly place with an awesome breakfast.
- Rob (10/5): Always great - Another comfy stay with great food
They are constantly doing things to the place - i'm sure such an old building needs constant work !
The sausage and mash beat me - really good
room at the back was really quiet
great value and far more pleasant than staying in a "Premier lodge"
Its out of the way, but well worth finding
see you all soon
- Philip (10/5): - Always a warm welcome from all of the staff. The menu is varied, priced well and always tastes good with a good choices for vegetarians. We have stayed here numerous times and wouldn't go anywhere else.
- Suzanne (10/5): - Lovely , comfortable stsy. We arrived very early but were able to buy ourselves a breakfast and were given a key for when we returned from a family wedding nearby. The staff were absolutely brilliant.
- Jane (8/5): - Lovely old inn
- Lungisani (10/5): - The staff make you feel welcome and they always there for there guests. Rooms are always clean. Best beds I’ve had in hotels.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Almost perfect. - On the whole everything was as you would expect from a rural pub type accommodation. Good restaurant food, lovely room, decorated in keeping with its age. I liked it. Breakfast wasn't the best, the only smallish downside in a nice relaxing, quiet weekend. Just what was needed.
- Linda (10/5): - A lovely, very old pub - perfect to impress my American brother!
Food was very good with sizeable portions and staff were friendly and efficient.
- Mary (8/5): - Nice place although not a good view from my room. Good welcome and food in evening was nice. Parking was conveniently in a car park across the riD that i was told had cameras
- joanne (10/5): - Memorable stay as always what you would expect from a pub dating from the 12th century. wonderful friendly service, food is good pub food, friendly atmosphere and location in Cornish countryside, our favorite place to stay when visiting friends in Saltash and for touring this area of Cornwall.
- Ady (10/5): - Perfect for the overnight stay I needed, staff friendly, food great, room good size and clean. Only downside was mattress was very soft but didnt put me off booking if I needed again.
- Lisa (10/5): - We had a lovely stay, staff very friendly and made us feel really welcome, food was also good ! Would stay again !
- William (10/5): 5* - Excellent venue, well priced. Comfy bed & big TV. Brilliant food & friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Lovely C12th Inn - Great Inn with lots of old features and modernised rooms. It’s a bit like a tardis inside with lots of seating in the back. The staff are friendly and the breakfast is good.
Don’t trust your satnav if it tries to send you down a 7ft wide lane with a recommended max 10mph sign. It’s point to point shorter, but there is a much faster normal road to use.
- James (10/5): - Very friendly staff, felt extremely welcomed and would use the hotel again when in the area ….. a nice little cosy retreat
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very friendly staff. Clean spacious rooms. Fantastic location in small village with great views of countryside.
- Richard (10/5): A cracking place to eat. - 4 night business stay. The room was clean and spacious with a good sized flat screen TV. The jewel in the crown is the restaurant which was busy every night. If you want fine dining go elsewhere but if it is excellent home cooked food, this is the place but make sure that you book to avoid disappointment.
- Miss Emma (10/5): Amazing. - I fully enjoyed my stay. Staff where kind and helpful, dinner was served quick and tasted amazing the room was massive with country views and a big bathroom. We stayed in August bank holiday and expected it to be busy but it was lovely and quiet, a real hidden gem. The little church yard behind it was beautiful. Would recommend to anyone that wants a peaceful time away with a good atmosphere.
- michael (10/5): Traditional pub - Loveky quant pub set in the countryside ,serves good food at a low price , rooms are clean and well equipt .. pub can ve a little noisy but ut susnt detract from a good night sleep
- John (8/5): - Attractive little place with friendly staff and nice food. Some of the furnishings were a little dated in our room but an overall pleasant stay
- Chris (10/5): - Lovely village pub with lovely staff and locals. Great atmosphere, service and views
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Extremely friendly staff. Warm, clean room, bed just a little soft and was expecting a queen but was only a double with queen head board, but wasn’t an issue as only a 2 night stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - What a very unique Hotel this is and so full of character with over 800 years old, the furnishings inside are stunning, just a little difficult to get there with the narrow road, but once you work that out it is easy
- Barry (10/5): Welcoming and comfortable - Very welcoming and comfortable stay. The Weary Friar is a bit off the beaten track reached by some narrow lanes which adds to the fun. Cosy clean and simply decorated room with tea and coffee making facilities.
Excellent dinner in bar with wide range of menu choices. Good breakfast with cereal, toast, tea and (instant) coffee self served and breakfast cooked to order. Highly recommended.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Ideal location if you are visiting places in the surrounding area
- elaine (10/5): stop over to visit nearby properties Cotehele - Great little country pub, nice rooms, the evening meal and breakfast were both excellent. Really good vegetarian meal options
- ralph (10/5): Great Hotel - the hotel was great, the rooms where fine, the food was fantastic and the location is quite but everywhere we wished to see was within an hours drive at the most. The beer was good as well
- Ip (8/5): - Brilliant old Inn with modern bedrooms best of both worlds Cooked to order breakfast and a good menu in the bar. Tucked away from the main roads but well worth finding. Will definitely use it again when in the area
- Simon (10/5): - We stayed for 2 nights in October, this hotel was a pleasure to stay at , the food was good and cost of room was just right. All in all it was a lovely stay , maybe the young staff might need a little shake up as a couple of items were forgotten at dinner, but this was trivial to the whole experience.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Lovely lnn - So much room for dining it would be really nice if a comfortable area was set aside as a lounge. Owners were very pleasant. Not sure about the cleaners ! As a dead spider was behind the bathroom door for both days &nights.Just a suggestion but fresh grapefruit & pears available at breakfast would have been welcome howevever we do wish the owners well
