• Peter (8/5): - A most spectacular location with awe-inspiring views. Photos from H Altura are on my smartphone lock screen and my laptop wallpaper. The fire pagoda was very nice to help keep the chill away. We were not expecting to be cool when visiting CR. I loved it. My wife, she had a little challenge to stay watm, the only reason I cannot give a full 5 star on every score. They had vegan breakfast for me, which was delicious. Front desk staff were very helpful, and we had many excursions based here.

I would recommend max 4 people. Breakfast was very good and in the master dome with incredible view. We also loved the firepit event in the evening when we had time to meet with others guests! Definetely worth to stay!
• Richard (8/5): Great Location and Staff - We went to see the volcano, but it was closed. The staff were very nice and friendly, including offering alternative places to visit. The grounds were well kept and the views were grand. The rooms were nice and reasonably comfortable. One issue, which for some may be positive or negative is the rooster and mule making a racket at 4:00 in the morning. The hot/cold water was so finicky thst you ran the risk of being frozen or scalded. The breakfast was mediocre and the coffee was the worst we had in our two weeks in Costa Rica. It was a nice benefit of staying, but this is Costa Rica, great coffee is a must. I would recommend the Altura Hotel, especially due to the staff.

We stayed in the King Suite overlooking the valley, which also had a small rooftop area offering an even more stunning vantage point. From the suite, we could see donkeys and cows roaming below, which only added to the charm and natural beauty of the setting.

We booked through Expedia, expecting something beautiful as the pictures and IG profile, but were shocked to find ourselves in a filthy, claustrophobic container room. Creepiness: The room was dusty, the windows were grimy, and the bathroom was so small that even a single person felt cramped. The accordion doors offered zero privacy. Disgusting: The bed, shoved into a tiny corner, was clearly never properly cleaned. The sheets were constantly slipping off, revealing a horrifyingly cheap mattress that groaned with every movement. Unsafe: The only access to the first floor was via a rickety, outdoor staircase – the indoor one looked too dangerous to even attempt. Unhygienic: The coffee mugs were covered in mold and dust. Pathetic: Breakfast consisted of minuscule portions of cold gallo pinto, eggs, and plantains. Avoid this place at all costs. The 9-star reviews are a complete lie. There are far better options nearby. The photos are incredibly misleading.

• James (8/5): - Quirky setting. We had Unit 6, which was two-story for four people. First floor-all glass with curtains. Second floor appeared to be a converted shipping container. Which was fine and worked out; kind of like a 'tiny house'. We would have opened the windows, but there were no screens, and the smell from the horses next door was overpowering. The interior stairwell is metal (tough on bare feet) steep and not placed in the best location; getting out of the second floor bed could end in disaster if the hatch isn't closed. Otherwise, it was comfortable for our needs, quiet except for some late night voices and dogs barking. Breakfast was included and very good.

Space heaters provided but bring warm pj's and socks. Breakfast was great. If you want a luxury get away, this is not it. If you are looking for something unique, quiet, on a beautiful property and don't mind foregoing some luxury's, this is a great choice....also loved the cows and a donkey next door and a couple of nice dogs wandering the property...saw some wildlife too.

Our new room didn’t have enough hot water for the jacuzzi to work and the heater downstairs was broken. The cottage was damp and cold as was the bed. The staff was lovely though and ready to help as best they could. The grounds of the hotel were very nice.

• Kristen (8/5): - The hotel had a hippy vibe, lovely grounds, many nice plants. Small open lawn for kicking around a soccer ball. Gnomes all over. It was quite chilly, especially when the sun set. Breakfast: included, but we were only able to eat the fruit and juice/coffee. It started being served at 6:30, and our Poas volcano tour started at 7, so we had to leave before the eggs and other food were ready. It ended at 9am. Internet: spotty “Superior” Room: small for 5. There is a bed accessible by pull down attic stairs (that had a crack in it). It was quite hot up there during the day but it cooled off a lot at night. Our 14 year old slept up there. I wouldn’t want a younger child to go up the stairs and have open railing at the top. Our 11 year old slept on the couch (not a convertible). And, our 8 year old slept on the small bed. It has a refrigerator and kitchen sink. There is an interesting covered building with views of the valley below, a tree growing up through the roof, and more gnomes Overlook near the breakfast area is nice. Farm next door with many cows and a donkey. Three big dogs to pet and a friendly cat.
• Suna (10/5): - We loved our stay at the Altura Hotel. Ramiro checked us in, and he was super friendly and helpful. The hotel is about a 10 minute drive to Poas national part. The property is quite lovely and has a beautiful view, overlooking the city. There is so much attention to detail on the grounds. The breakfast was delicious as well. Highly recommend!

Highly recommend spending some time at the properly for the kids to have a run around and explore everything the place has to offer (we wished we were staying another night). The breakfast was lovely too. We stayed in a tent which was comfortable with a great view, slight leak when it was raining but nothing that affected our stay. They also had lovely large dogs on the premises which my kids loved. Highly recommend

The room was nice and big and very brand new. The breakfast was a bit far but the walk to there contained a great view. The parking was nice and easy. They give you a flashlight in case you want to go to your car at night. Overall, best hotel.

• Gary (8/5): - An eclectic assortment of accommodation buildings. Nice views over city valley and sunset, cow fields next door. We stayed in the standard room which is on the lower floor in the back 'normal' looking building. Most others are of other construction. Room had enough space including couch. No A/C since it's at about 7000ft elev and cools fast. Has a space heater. Wifi was very weak in room, but better in other areas like the overlook and office. Breakfast started at 7:30 and was quick since they start cooking yours as soon as you step in the door. I think everyone gets the same plate of eggs and other items.

• Laura (10/5): - What a cool, funky, super special place. We stayed in the Master Dome for (sadly) only one night. Soaked in the biggest tub I've ever seen and the next day wandered around the magical property as the fog rolled in off the hills. We were there to see Paos Volcano but the hotel became the highlight as the volcano wasn't visible that day. We'll definitely be back!

And the restaurant nearby suggested by Oscar was delightful as well, with an incredible view of the town. We spent some time in the morning exploring the view points on the property. The breakfast was delicious. Great place to stay if visiting Poas. Couldn’t be closer to the national park.

We will come back on a future trip for certain. At night, the stars and city lights were amazing from the patio on our roof. Easy to access on paved roads, despite never driving outside of the US. About an hour from San Jose. The concierge stayed late to let us in. Our room was large and in beautifully constructed single building with a comfortable bed in a quiet area. Waking up to these views is unreal. Highest recommendation.

• Rita (10/5): Cool hotel with awesome views - We loved Altura Hotel! Perched on the mountains above San Jose, it had great views and was only 10 minutes from Poas Volcano National Park. Each unit was unique, creative and practical. We stayed in the Studio which reminds me of a tiny home. There were twin bunk beds, fridge, sink., and couch downstairs. Upstairs was a double bed, bathroom with shower. The ladder climb Upstairs was a little scary (it's quiteusteep and not good for little ones--our tween boys loved it) but there was a spiral staircase outside that'll get you upstairs and to the deck. Breakfast was included with our stay--typical Tico breakfast of coffee, tea, juice; eggs, rice with beans, plantains, and small slice of cheese.

• nicola (8/5): - the dome experience is very nice , this one had a bath, heater, humidifier which was needed, my only real gripe is the the clear area of the dome was filthy, you could hardly see thru it which is the whole point for paying extra to sleep in a dome.
• Verified traveler (8/5): Quaint and unique - Our first time staying in the area and we were pleasantly surprised. Our 5 year old daughter loved it!! Said it was just like camping. It was cold but thankfully we were provided extra blankets. We’re definitely curious about the other rooms if we return to the area again.

• Miles (10/5): - Wow, what an interesting place. We stayed in 10, over looking the whole San Jose valley. Quiet farm setting with a 2nd to none view. You are staying off the beaten path, in a rainforest, dress warm and for rain, even in the dry season. The breakfast was more than enough and coffee in the room. This place was amazing.

• Manon (10/5): Gorgeous lodge up the mountain - This is a very beautiful hotel up in the mountains, 10 minutes away from the Poas Volcano entrance. The place is very peaceful, the views are breathtaking and the staff extremely friendly. A delicious cooked homemade Costa Rican breakfast is included. The only ´issue’ I had is that I realized after showering in the evening and after the front desk had closed that there was no hair dryer in the room. Everything would have been perfect if there was one.

• Ajay (4/5): - The chalet is cramped with furniture. The steps are unsafe for kids. An adult and a kid slipped and got hurt. Awkward structure of bedrooms and bathroom. Breakfast is great though.
• John (10/5): - The views from our room were breathtaking, and the staff were very friendly. Just remember to pack warm clothes, because it can get chilly this high on the mountain.
• Robert (4/5): - At $150 plus taxes for a “suite” this was way too expensive compared to elsewhere we stayed. Unit had beautiful design but was jammed with ugly and uncomfortable furniture. Wi-Fi stopped working and hence so did much of tv. Lovely grounds, good breakfast and nice staff.

• Eduardo (2/5): I would not recommend this place at all. - It was not good. We arrived late in the evening so we understood and we're greatful that they had someone let us into the property even though it is standard in the states to the do this. When we arrived the room was extremely cold and never warmed up with the space heaters provided. We did not have hot water that night and in the morning, no one answered the phone for several hours to come fix the issue. This caused us to be several hours late for our next destination. They took their time and never apologized for the mistake. No discounts offered or anything else.

• Vianny (8/5): - The views are unbelievable. Love the simplicity of the room. Was perfect for the two of us. Property manager was very sweet and helpful. Our suite had a beautiful observation deck that over looked the valley. Only drawback was other people were looking to enjoy while we slept. Definitely needs a sign that says private or occupied so they don’t walk on it while we slept. The bathtub is perfection. Would visit again. Great location.
• Eimy (8/5): - I wasn’t impressed. Maybe 🤔 it’s not my style but for the $ I expected better. I didn’t like that breakfast was the same thing every day and they served very little. It gets pretty chilly at night and they only had 2 very small heaters that did nothing. It’s not a bad property but it just didn’t do it for me.
• Jessica (10/5): - The property was close to Volcan Poas, safe, and quiet. The breakfast was hot and delicious. If we come back to CR we will stay again.

• Verified traveler (8/5): - The property is unique in its architecture and garden design, which is very nice to experience. It was cool to stay in a place so pretty and different from others. The beds were comfortable, the rooms were designed with comfort in mind.
