Guest Reviews
- Sheryl (6/5): - Happy with our room. Given the price we paid it definitely delivered what we required for a one night stay. Would stay again if travelling that way
- Norager (7/5): -
- Kenny (1/5): DONT GO THERE! - NO WATER SUPPLIED COULDNT SHOWER!! SHOCKING FOR A PLACE THAT HAS SPRING WATER NOT BEEN ABLE TO SHOWER
- Corey (7/5): -
- Roheeta (7/5): -
- Aarushi (6/5): - good for the price
- Greg (9/5): Lovely historical hotel with great prices and cozy rooms - Great feel about the place, the history, very cozy, friendly staff who are making an effort to look after a historical hotel. and handy restaurant. Little smart TV with Prime Video. I would stay again The bed was a bit hard for me
- Vince (4/5): Must have been a beautiful hotel in its prime however nothing appears to have been done for years including original bat - Convenient position Needs a lot of maintenance
Tv terrible
Pillow was hard
- John (4/5): -
- John (9/5): - Very clean, warm and tidy
- Janice (7/5): A grand old lady looking sad. - A lovely old Art Deco hotel needing much refurbishment. The beautiful grand entrance foyer will hopefully be retained. Good location close to everything. I did not use the cafe/restaurant. The bed was extremely comfortable but the room overlooked a yard ful of construction rubbish.
It was ok for what I paid for the night. The front doors were locked when I arrived and no notices about how to enter. As I walked away a person came and opened the door. The office area behind reception was a complete shambles and what was once a beautiful entrance area was all closed off I am assuming for alterations. There were piles of construction rubbish outside the entrance. It was obvious some work was underway but no mention was made of this. The wiring for the tv was a bit dodgy.
- BETH (5/5): Ok for the price - Quaint retro grand old lady. Pleased to see it being refurbished Booked queen bed, given 2 singles( with apologies) one of which was dreadful. Hard & lumpy.
- Nicola (6/5): Cheap and basic for a layover. - A glorious sweeping staircase with a portrait photo of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip at the top strongly hinted at a past magnificence. Now the place is faded and jaded. We did have a very quiet room at the back of the establishment so we got a great sleep on the comfortable bed. There was also plenty of hot water in the shower. There were two small kitchens available for guests with limited facilities. The kitchens were quite dirty though so I washed everything before using it.
- Beatrice (4/5): Good potential. Terrible nights sleep - The hotel is old school, retro big staircase etc- I assume it’s under renovation at the moment. room was really clean, had good wifi speed, toiletries, kettle, tea/coffee and a smart TV which was good. I was able to park right outside the hotel too. My threshold for leaving negative reviews is pretty high but I slept terribly here. I’ve been using cheap motels and holiday parks while travelling NZ for the last 5 weeks so have a pretty good idea of what this sort of price generally gets you.
I expected very basic facilities for what I paid but the windows are single glazed and did not fully shut meaning it was drafty and the road and train line outside that run all night are basically in your room. I had noise cancelling earphones on with white noise and it still got through! The shower head was also fixed in the wall at shoulder height (I’m 5’7) and had good power but didn’t run very hot.
Based on this stay compared with other places in similar price range in NZ I cannot recommend it until they do some serious work to reduce the noise pollution at least. There are lots of holiday parks here which offer individual cabins with a full shared kitchen and shower facilities for the same price point. Sorry

- Dawn (4/5): We left first thing the next morning staying only the one night as neither of us had slept due to the uncomfortable beds - The room was clean. We were 100% sure we booked a large double bed room and while gentlemen showed us the email saying twin beds ( which were extremely uncomfortable) we did not get an email ourselves telling us the change. The hall ways have been tiled making them echoing .The shower was only warm without cold water and the shower rose was suitable for someone who was 5 foot tall. No where to put bags. Duvets were Kmart cheapies . We were not expecting the ritz as we knew it was under renovation. But feel that maybe it would have been better to have a few rooms well and as money came available do more.
- Amusia (6/5): -
- Raymond (1/5): There were extremely rude and place was a trash I will never go back there - Nothing The guy in the reception was extremely rude and he was yelling at us and the sheets were so dirty and dust and we inform them but they said it’s clean
- william (7/5): - Le charme de l' hôtel
Bon wifi
- Phillip (6/5): - Location. Clean and comfortable beds. Worn out bath and room.
- Lisa (8/5): -
- Lucian (9/5): -
- Christina (3/5): -
- Hitchens (3/5): Old, dirty and grim - Nothing comes to mind So first of all the photo of the book that I’d booked was completely different to the room I got; the photo showed a much larger, more modern room.
There was only one pillow which was way too thick and really uncomfortable to sleep on.
The curtain rail was attached to the wall so when I pulled the curtain to close it, the whole curtain/rail came off the wall!
There was no light in the actual shower, which meant that I either had to shower with the curtain open and get the floor wet, or close the curtain and not be able to see what I’m doing. Also the actual shower head was really low down so I had to bend my knees awkwardly to wash my hair!!
The shared kitchen was appalling - it was so dirty, messy, old and gross, it was not a nice experience cooking in there; also the tiny fridge was so full there was basically no space to put food in there.
In general the whole place was very old and didn’t use a nice feel to it - I felt sad being in there.
Oh and the noise from the road was quite loud too.
Definitely won’t be coming back!
- Joseph (8/5): Comfortable - Close to food and town.
Nice area to walk around
- Brown (10/5): Awesome, Affordable stay. If you can handle traffic noise 👍 - Affordable, comfortable place to rest your head. Easy access to room and respec of privacy forl people. The traffic. But that's out of the hotels control.
- Emma (6/5): -
- Johanna (4/5): Nein danke - Die Lage war gut für uns Alles war oll, es war sehr laut an dem Kreisverkehr, die Küche nicht sauber
- Donna (8/5): - Great entrance area. Very grand stairway
- Marco (1/5): an ugly accommodation in a dead town - stay far away - a broken shower and a bad smelling hotel.. bad people living in .. you will be happy when you will leave i forgot a pair of shorts; i called them 5times; i asked customer assistence too; they joked me on the phone
- Liz (1/5): - Nothing. If this had been the first time to use booking. com I would not use again.
- Christina (7/5): Cheap and cheerful - Cheap and cheerful, good location for restaurants across the road. Great place to stop while travelling the North Island
- Thomson-Cain (10/5): - We needed a stop after a long drive and this hotel is interesting with lots of potential . We had a good sleep and would love to see what the owner does to create a vintage space . Location and price
- Martin (8/5): Extremely good value - Bit dated but very clean and tidy Parking was street side
- Gaylene (8/5): Great location and great value - We got a main room which was great, loved the view Shower had hair on the walls - could have scrubbed it down from the last stay
- Clare (8/5): - Staff very helpful, especially as I was a late check in. Also very clean and comfortable.
- Katrina (1/5): - staff member was nice. appalling accomodation not been upgraded since 1952, permanent noisy residents seem to live in the hotel it was like a nasty hostel
- Bill (4/5): Good and economical - Good value
- Dušan (8/5): -
- Laurice Claire (7/5): -
- Jon (10/5): interesting old hotel in the process of being upgraded. Staff were pleasant, bar staff exceptional. - A clean and compact room with all the amenities. No aircon but the provided fan was ok and the window opened to a nice breeze. a chair in the room would have been handy
- Sujatha Kumari (10/5): Like home - Location is great
- Wendy (7/5): Clean comfy, room value for money. - Central location, clean, Victorian, majestic vibes inside with well-maintained wooden handrails on the staircase, rooms with clean comfy bed. Hosts responsive to our needs and request. No pre warning the hotel is in the middle of renovations, on arrival the hotel looks abandoned. front doors locked at all times no information on how to check in until we rung number on the front door. although the room was great there were no offer of complementary milk or access to cooking facilities. Room had kettle and tea/coffee/sugar provided. no parking except on the street. Because of the renovating happening no TV and internet was only for one night, The host was very apologetic for the inconvenience.
- Hanyan (8/5): Good value clean room. Will consider to stay again. - Very affordable No table in the room.
- Kathryn (8/5): Great value, great staff, convenient location. Basic but good. - The staff were very helpful and friendly The toilet lid fell down when I sat on the toilet🙃
- Barry (7/5): -
- Grant (5/5): Served its purpose - Clean sheets, hot shower . Electric blankets...or warmer bedding
- Fiona (6/5): Was fine... all we needed for one night stay. - Hot shower, clean sheets...it's being renovated so got what was expected. Not enough blankets.
- Leeanne (7/5): - nice single room, comfortable bed all good
- Kair (8/5): Lovely old hotel, great value for money - Clean pressed sheets. Handy to Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari and Te Waihou walkway. Plenty of takeaways, nice Indian restaurant and craft beer restaurant. Kitchen in accommodation. For the price - nothing, it is great value.
- Marco (7/5): -
- Delia (8/5): My favourite was running up and down the carpeted stairs at least 4 times a day. - Location. A group of my friends were also booked in. The hotel has changed hands. The new owners are working hard to upgrade the hotel.
- Aiden (1/5): Appalling - Close to our activities. And quiet So outdated.Only one plug socket in room.Room was freezing. No car parking.Shared kitchen was absolutely disgusting.Bathroom was inadequate.Honestly was not value for money.Charged us $90 a night but wouldn’t of paid them 90 cents.Place needs to be looked at by authorities because it’s a death trap.
- Stewart (9/5): Ill be back I think - Larger kitchen
- Robin (8/5): - Very handy location for our stay. Clean and comfortable with friendly staff.
- Ian (4/5): Lovely old art deco building undergoing renovations.Bought the hot water issue to management but unf - The service and friendliness of the restaurant staff No hot water.TV did not work
- Rodger (6/5): Budget hotel and you get what you pay for. Comfortable and clean. - Cool architecture. Retro feel. Friendly staff. Restaurant good value and tasty meals.
- Susan (7/5): Great location for visiting Sanctuary Mountain. Basics done well. Extremely affordable. - Bedroom and bathroom were very clean.
- Jonathan Pauline (6/5): Great stay it meet our needs - The room was pleasant and meet our needs The bed was very comfortable the cleanliness of the room was great plus the natural breeze through the room cooled it down very quickly A couple of things a small table with utensils a bigger bar fridge plus UHT milk instead of the powered cream for a morning drink. The drapes in the room didn’t fit the windows plus the shower curtain wasn’t installed properly. Just could make it more easier when staying overnight
- Vilia (3/5): Won't be using it again. - Shower was blocked ,could hear people arguing. The pub down stairs was load and could here a lot through the walls.
No fridge in room.No secure parking. Bed was comfortable and that was about it.
- Louisa (5/5): -
- Rachel (8/5): -
- jason (6/5): - The price was right for the quality The room and building smelt of food and people smoking
- Wayne (7/5): No Channels TV. Ok place to Stay - Location, price The tv didn't receive any channels. The bed was springy and pillows bouncy. Needed a table in the room.
- Marcus (10/5): -
- Rob (6/5): - Reasonable place to stay for the price. Host was friendly and helpful and wanted to assist immediately with any issues I found.
- Charlie (6/5): Fair value - You get what you pay for Could have been a little cleaner
- Karati (1/5): Appalling - It was cheap. There is a list of things that need to be addressed by Booking.com.
1. Service is poor. I stood outside till someone one from the garden decided to let me in. They knew I was there as I was only 10m away from them.
2. I wasnt allowed to take my bike to my room. The hotel doesnt scream security and I spent the night concerned for my bike that was in the foyer.
3. In the room next to me there was a violent domestic incident at 1am. It was scary and I almost called the police. I am certain that drugs were involved and a door was smashed in.
I would not recommend this place to anyone at all.
Appalling is the only word that describes my experience there.
- Barry (8/5): - Beautiful old hotel Some traffic noise
- Cullen (10/5): -
- Phillipa (10/5): -
- BETH (5/5): I wish the new operators well and hope they are successful in restoring this old icon - Clean & pretty quiet . Reasonable price. Restaurant was very disappointing. Cold seafood chowder and Thai chicken open sandwich really didn't resemble Thai flavours.
- peter (2/5): -
- Linda (8/5): Value for money - Lovely staff, basic room but met our needs and the restaurant was lovely. We would stay again.
- Norati (10/5): -
- Norati (10/5): -
- Craig (6/5): One night in town - Seeing the full moon in the clear night sky. Renovation construction messy ground floor
- Juanita (9/5): -
- Guest (1/5): We didn't stay! - Website photos looked decent. When we pulled up exterior had scaffolding . You could see through window mattress stacked up in a downstairs lounge or dining area. I was buzzed in at door. Guy sitting at desk barely looked up. Lady sitting behind him on computer. Guy had to tell her to serve me. No warm greeting. Their office space looked messy, cluttered and very unprofessional. She pointed me to my room. I opened the door looked in and walked straight back out. The door to the room was old and didn't look secure at all. You could see through the sides. Renovations and upkeep is important. Be honest and let people know that renovations are in progress. There is no lift.
- Crawford (7/5): - No car parking for guest
- Gerry and Yvonne (6/5): -
- Vandhana (10/5): -
- MURRAY (8/5): -
- Geoff (9/5): An unexpected joy. The gem of Putararu. - Amazing grand historic design. Like staying in a period drama. Renovations in progress. But we knew that and it was reflected in the value price. When complete, this hotel will be very special.
