- Catherine (10/5): Comfortable and beautiful stay - What a special place! After about a week of walking 6-10 miles per day, it was so nice to have a little down time. Upon arriving at the hotel, we immediately got into the onsen and stayed there for a large portion of our two night stay. We loved the room -- finally a big space after staying in the tiniest of Japanese hotel rooms. We had a lovely deck with views of the mountains. You really are in the mountains at this place. The food at dinner and breakfast was delicious for the most part, and there's a lot of it. I got to try a lot of different seafood that I had never tried before. One of our waiters, Ali, made my husband a homemade birthday card for his 40th birthday. Also, they provided transport when we went to the Hakone Open Air Museum (highly recommended) and the Ropeway. There was one button on the toilet that didn't work - the open lid/close lid button. And once you get there, you get rid of your shoes and wear slippers. None of the slippers they had fit my long narrow feet comfortably. I'm being very nitpicky due to the price of the stay, which is more money than I've ever spent on a hotel before, by a lot.

- John (9/5): Throughly enjoyed our stay. Would have liked multiple days but maybe next time. - Quiet, serene, and tranquil Room assignment location and view. We had the parking lot view. Also, let guest be aware of reserving transportation to train station to be done early. It was completely booked when we tried.
- Xavier (10/5): Experiencia inolvidable. - Absolutamente todo. Desde la habitación, el personal y la increible cena y desayuno. Una experiencia inmejorable
- Maria (8/5): Beautiful views and location, great food experience but expensive for what it is! w - Beautiful location and views. Really tried to accommodate the baby. Very expensive for what it is - you have less than a day here from check in to check out and the process to check in itself is so long. Dietary requirements are very very limited. The public onsen is quite dated (again this is based on price) and things like the instructions on the massage chairs being in Japanese only are small updates that need to be made.
- Camilo (10/5): A relaxing retreat in the beautiful Hakone - The staff was exceptional, and the property itself was beautiful and very comfortable. The views from the room were breathtaking, and the atmosphere incredibly peaceful. Everything feels so intentional and well thought out. Both meals were delicious, featuring a good variety of Japanese dishes with fresh seasonal ingredients. Dishes are presented beautifully. The shuttle service was very convenient. Nothing, everything was amazing.
- Sven (10/5): This is the perfect place to simply relax and - - Nothing -
- Liming (10/5): Overall, a comfortable and enjoyable stay. - Upon arrival, the staff proactively came to assist with our luggage, and the check-in process was smooth and well-handled. The staff member who looked after us during our stay was particularly friendly and attentive, which made a positive difference to our experience.
The location is excellent, and having a private onsen is a definite highlight. Our outdoor private bath had a beautiful view, making it a very relaxing and memorable experience. We also enjoyed wearing the hotel’s yukata to dinner, which added a fun and authentic touch to the stay.
The food was decent, though not particularly outstanding. That said, the kaiseki dining experience itself was still interesting to try. The children’s meal was more Western-style, which worked well for our family. One area that could be improved is the check-out experience. When we handed our key to a staff member, there was no guidance on the next steps, which felt slightly inconsistent with the level of service expected from a high-end property.
- AMIT (10/5): Everything was amazing! I wish to come again ! - הכל היה מושלם , מלון מהמם, נקי, מוקפד, חדרים מהממים ומיטות נוחות, שירות מעולה, אוכל מעולה, טרי וטעים ! Nothing

From the food, to the service, to the rooms, it was perfect from start to finish. Get the full board option, it's worth it! And the free drink and sweets bar to round off the night is an excellent touch. Amazing amazing amazing. NA

- Matthew (10/5): Perfection! A stay we will never forget! - Food was incredible as was the service and the room!
- HS12345 (8/5): - Cozy small hotel with a minimalistic and luxurious experience. No lunch in the premise. My daughter didn't like the food and surprisingly chef could not substitute any dish from the set menu to delight her. One dish which we were looking for was missing from the set menu and later staff told we got a wrong menu by mistake.
- geraldine (10/5): The staff were Amazing very friendly, The accommodation spotless and very comfortable - The Property was in a beautiful area
- Whitney (9/5): Incredible views and welcoming staff - Gorgeous views and great meals. Staff are very friendly and attentive. Water in both baths not that warm. You have to ask staff to add more hot water in the room bath.
- Lisa (10/5): - Exceptional stay, would highly recommend Location was convenient in Gora but traveling from Tokyo to the Yume station, did take awhile which is beyond the control of the property. However will need to account for travel time.

- HONG WEE (9/5): - The VVIP hospitality we received throughout our stay. Shout out to the hotel staff, Ali, for making our stay enjoyable and for seeing us off.
The room was spacious, decorated with contemporary Japanese furnishings, chocked full of amenities, private onsen on the balcony deck.
Private dining room for Kaiseki and authentic japanese breakfast.
Cosy lounge equipped with a fireplace, panoramic view of the hills and bottomless alcohol. The receptionist handling our checkout could have been more pleasant. It felt as though he just wanted to get the job done quickly and be rid of us.

- Judith (10/5): The most amazing stay at a gorgeous oasis - Gora Byakudan was absolutely stunning from the time we arrived until the sad time when we departed. It just was not enough time. The building is gorgeous, the floor to ceiling common area overlooking the forested mountain area it beyond beautiful. We could have sat & enjoyed that view for hours.
The room we had (Michi) was also beyond stunning, large and private. The private outdoor forested onsen was a welcome reprieve for our tired, achy bodies after the amount of walking we had done so far. We wished we could have spent more time in it. The bed was so comfortable, we slept like babies that night.
The meals (dinner & breakfast) were delicious & so innovative. Nothing like we had during our entire 2 week Japan holiday. Nagisa who led us through both meals was a delight, so sweet, we enjoyed our interactions with her both times.
The staff in general, who we interacted with were all friendly & helpful in any way possible. It was a nice touch to be able to call the hotel when arriving at the train station & have someone pick us up & then to drive us back to the station in the morning.
If we are ever to be so lucky to travel back to Hakone, we would not hesitate to stay at Hakone Gora Byakudan again. Nothing.

- abmilw (8/5): quiet nice clean hotel ok experience - not much to do here. Once arrive at hotel, perhaps just plan on staying here. Tried for massage at night, and it was an ordeal for some reason they couldn't / wouldn't use their spa room, even though it was empty, it was 'closed' Hotel was quiet, this is not for families nor kids. Just plan on quiet time and the bath. Have in room and then downstairs there is men only and women only areas. Will eat at hotel, food was fine. A few things to see and do in Hakone. Was clean.
- Charlotte (10/5): Beautiful setting, brilliant hotel - Beautiful setting, felt incredibly peaceful and the thought put into all the extras felt very special - e.g printed menus, welcome drinks, lounge amenities etc. The staff were very helpful, and made it a great stay. All the food was excellent, and was brilliant to try new things. The onsen was wonderful.
- Tyler (9/5): Great place - Beautiful property and the rooms were nice Very difficult to get to
- Lorna (10/5): We had first class treatment from beginning to end. Best stay ever! - Beautiful, clean, first class service & food
- Alison (9/5): -
- Ricardo (10/5): Great stay - The traditional Japanese cuisine was incredible!!! Nothing
- Tabea (10/5): Most magical and relaxing stop during our trip. - Amazing service. Everyone was so kind. The shuttle service was so nice. The food was delicious and a unique experience. The room was beautiful and the onsen (our private one and the public one) were wonderful. There were so many cute details that amazed us during our stay. Nothing. It was perfect.
- susan (10/5): - Beautiful, clean, spacious, light, new
- Ana Beatriz (10/5): - The staff is very attentive, caring and helpful. The facilities are excellent
- Jan Cato (10/5): - Everything was good!
- Priyanka (10/5): - My husband and I are both vegetarians, and the chef was able to make delicious vegetarian meals for us. The dinner we had was one of the best of our time in Japan. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming. The room and private onsen were relaxing, and we enjoyed the beautiful scenery. The staff went above and beyond by providing us a ride to the Open Air Museum and then to the train station. We had an incredible time and would very highly recommend staying here!!
- Dajun (10/5): -
- Melissa (10/5): -
- Jacob (10/5): - The staff was amazing, I forgot to ask the name of our specific help but we couldn’t stop talking about her the entire trip. She was amazing. Please if anything, give her a mountain of praise from us. She made the entire stay amazing, she was incredibly attentive, extremely cordial and very kind.
11/10 stars just for her and I will be staying here again.
- Mark (10/5): - Great hospitality, nice view , nice and quiet
Everything I want is there
- Laura (10/5): We stayed here as a “special occasion” part of our honeymoon combined with a birthday celebration and it exceeded all ex - Every space was absolutely immaculate and very well kept. Saki was taking care of us throughout our stay and she was incredible, she really went above and beyond to make sure we had the very best stay possible. Thank you very much to Saki and all the other staff. Nothing.
- Rie (10/5): -
- Nasim (10/5): The best way to relax in Japan. - Lovely staff. The rooms and amenities were fantastic. We had a private Onsen in our room which was the best experience for us. The dinner and breakfast was the best food we've had in Japan. Could have had more variety and quantity of complimentary savory snacks.
- Yaacov (10/5): Amazing private onsen 🌸 - Room and private onsen were WOW, real open air onsen facing the forest. Hotel has shuttle that takes you to the attractions around.
- Camille (10/5): - Loved our host Suki who was incredibly hospitable and kind. She took amazing care of us as if we were family. The lobby view was also incredible.
- Aiwei (9/5): - All staff had been really friendly and helpful, but special shout out to my dinner server Takano Saki 高野早紀さん, she’s the best! So sweet and polite, explained the meal very well and made some great recommendations, she made my dinner time extra enjoyable! And the note she left for me was such a surprise, felt very heart warming and sweet when I saw it on the breakfast table!
I like almost everything about the hotel, except for the bugs at the onsen area lol. Had a great time here, definitely will come back if I decided to go to Hakone again.
- Steven (10/5): -
- colleenkY2843RE (6/5): - This ryokan is a respite during your otherwise busy travels. It is important to note that there are no activities or amenities to speak of at this ryokan. Bring a book and plan on a lot of downtime in your room. There is no lunch served at the hotel and you are unable to order snacks, but the shuttle will take you downtown. The public onsen does not open until the late afternoon and we were told there are no walking trails around the hotel.
The building itself feels dated and a bit odd. The lobby windows provide a gorgeous view but it is the only communal area and is quite small with the same instrumental music playing constantly. The layout/feel is similar to that of a bible camp.
The private onsen off of the room is nice, but prepare to hear other guests enjoying their onsen too. The only coffee/espresso available is from a keurig machine. The hotel charges you for water bottles, which are only available in a very small size.
The kaiseki meals are very elaborate, beautifully plated and certainly the highlight of the stay. Prepare to have all of your meals in a small room with only the people you came with. The female staff are very kind. You are provided clothing to wear during your stay which was a nice and comfortable touch.
I do not believe this hotel, for what it does offer, warrants the price we paid. We left feeling disappointed. Good for 1-2 nights max.
- egbauer (4/5): Vegetarians (and maybe all Americans?) should avoid Byakudan - Byakudan is lovely. The room I booked looked like the photos, and the open air bath with a view of green forest was wonderful.
This is a two-star review mostly because of the food, but I did run into a couple of other small issues.
Wasps kept buzzing around me in the bath. At first I tried to ignore them, but eventually I realized that they were trying to build a nest somewhere in the floorboards. So I went to ask the staff for help & they grabbed a can of spray, followed me back to my room, and proceeded to spray clouds of wasp killer all around the patio and bath.
I feel like the benefits of soaking in onsen water might be slightly outweighed by the negative effects of breathing clouds of bug spray.
Thanks to jetlag, I was waking up early throughout my trip. On both mornings when I went down to the lobby to get coffee, because the machine there is a little better than the one in the rooms, the lobby machine was jammed or non-functional. Ryokans are supposed to be about attending to every detail, and this was the sort of small nuisance I don't expect to encounter at a $$ hotel.
Mostly, I had a problem with the meals. I reserved six months in advance and stated clearly in my reservation that I'm a vegetarian. Other reviews have mentioned that Byakudan accommodates vegetarians and I never received any communication to the contrary from Byakudan.
TLDR: Byakudan does not accommodate vegetarians.
When I sat down for my first kaiseki meal, they basically served me hospital food. Very simple, very plain, no seasonings, no spices, no sauces, all food that an invalid could eat. No strong flavors, no unusual ingredients. One course was just a whole steamed onion. With, as seasoning, a tiny amount of olive oil.
I told the staff the next morning that I'd eat my second dinner somewhere else. It was my last dinner in Japan and I wanted to enjoy it. But that made everyone upset so they went back and forth with the chef and then convinced me that they'd mix things up for the second evening, and do better.
That second dinner was so much worse. I didn't get any interesting ingredients, or any spices, or any strong flavors. Instead, they served me a salad with *Italian dressing*. An omelette with *ketchup*. They gave me a little pot of American-style potato salad like you'd find in a gallon tub at your local grocery store. This wasn't a chef who didn't know how to cook for a vegetarian--it was intentionally insulting. There's something really humiliating about paying for an insult--and I'd prepaid with my booking, so my choices were to eat or go hungry.
I get that people are simmering with hostility toward Americans lately, but I felt so unwelcome, so insulted, and so heartbroken to have this experience that I'd looked forward to for months turned against me.

- jclewis2017 (2/5): Bad Food, Bad Sleep, Not for Families - LOCATION: Five words – in the middle of nowhere – which is great if you are staying in your room the entire time, but terrible if you want to explore the town. If you like to walk to shops, sights, a restaurant, café—or walk to anything—this is not the place for you. Even going to 7-Eleven is a 30-minute drive.
CHECK-IN: Two words – absolute nightmare! After a 2-hour train ride and another 50-minute car ride, the one thing I want to do when arriving at a hotel is get to my room as quickly as possible. Not possible here. This hotel greets you by rudely demanding you take your shoes off even before you put your bags down, then forcefully escorts you to sit on a couch in the lobby for 32 minutes like a prisoner while they run off with your passports and credit card. This check-in process also involves hot tea and an unidentifiable sugar cube of mush in the shape of a marijuana leaf. Perhaps it would have been nice if I knew this was going to be a long, drawn-out thing in advance—but I didn’t expect it, and it was awful after a long and exhausting journey.
ROOM: Four words – No blackout shades. The sun rises at 4:37 a.m., so that is when you’re waking up! The shower is 100% glass—zero privacy—which may be great for a couple, but my teen boys were not into it at all. Air conditioning is good if you can get it to work—the remote is in Japanese, and the one-page instructions read like an IKEA DIY project. There are three different kinds of slippers for each person, for a total of six pairs, which is confusing and messy. Speaking of messy—cords, empty boxes, knickknacks, and small appliances are strewn everywhere. There is hardly a clean surface to put your stuff down near the sink.
PRIVATE ONSEN: Four words – Highlight of the stay. The room had a small backyard, neatly manicured with green moss and shrubs, and a hot spring–fueled tub. The water is warm and not too hot; the backyard is outdoors yet very private.
DINNER: Three words – Go somewhere else! The Kaiseki dinner is eight courses and steals two hours of your life. The only edible course was three pieces of meat—each the size of one Starburst candy square—that you had to cook yourself. The sorbet tastes like lemon rind. Needless to say, we were starving and had a better dinner at the local 7-Eleven.
BREAKFAST: One word – YUK! Assorted fish filets that you must cook yourself, rice, bad soup, and yogurt.
ICE CREAM: Three words – Not even close. When you check in, they will tell you they have "ice cream." They don’t. They have rock-hard, ice cube–sized pellets of something that may resemble chocolate ice cream—if you’ve never had chocolate ice cream before.
SERVICE: Two words - Not friendly. We stayed at three hotels during our trip to Japan, ate at many restaurants and went in many shops - the only unfriendly people we met in the entire country of Japan were at this hotel. Beware of the grumpy guy at the door who roughly demands your shoes before you enter the building. When you can find someone at the front desk (which is difficult, because they disappear when you need help) are very rude and act like they are doing you a favor just by speaking to you. And don't even get me started about the rude women who aggressively herd you to the couch during the check-in process.
- Lillian (10/5): - The room was clean and spacious. The staffs were friendly. The food was delicious. I would definitely go back♨️. You must like Japanese food, though.
- Rahaf (9/5): Superb -
- Hao (4/5): Worst spot I have stayed in the past few year in Hakone - Nothing No one welcome us upon arrival, food was not impressed at all, old&small room compare to the same price arrange other properties, many details shows this is not clean enough
