Guest Reviews
- Zack (10/5): - Lovely food, traditional experience. Landlord is very kind and generous. Note that it is about a 20 minute walk from the ferry. Not terrible but if you're bringing bags it's a shlep! Cabs are in short supply on the island so I would definitely recommend leaving your main bag in Hiroshima and bringing just an overnight bag for your stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): The most amazing st - This place was a highlight of our trip. You get to stay in a classic Japanese house, that’s basically on top of one of the most sought after sushi restaurant of Miyajima. The dinner you will get here will blow your mind and the owner is such an amazing character. He even drove us back for free at the station as it was pouring rain. After our meal, he even brought us to feed the deer! We miss this place.
- Jarrad (10/5): - This place was amazing - pretty much a fabulous sushimi restaurant with a guesthouse on top. We (family of 5) had the run of the place and were treated to exceptional dinners and breakfast everyday.
The owner even took us out one night with kitchen leftovers so the kids could feed the local deer.
If you stay here, come hungry to every dinner!
- Eric (10/5): - Unique experience! Single occupancy hotel that is more of a ryokan on a quaint street. The owner/chef speaks little English but his hospitality shined through his actions. The lodging above the small sushi restaurant is simple (2 bedrooms with futon beds), but with a modern bathroom and all very clean. The highlight of the stay was the spectacular ~16 course sushi omakase.
- Cara (10/5): - Very authentic experience on beautiful Miyajima island. The sushi dinner was incredible and like nothing we’ve had before. We were traveling as a family and the owner/chef prepared separate more kid-friendly sushi for my 8 and 11 yo. Breakfast was great as well. Sleeping on the floor is not something we’re used to but it was fine for the night.
- Sian (10/5): - Totally amazing experience! The host was very attentive and helpful. He carried our cases up to our accommodation and we were so surprised how big the space was! Two rooms and bathroom. We enjoyed sleeping on futons for the first time. However the highlight was the food! Sushi prepared and presented in front of us. Unbelievable quality and attention to detail. We also enjoyed our Japanese breakfasts too! The location is 200m from the Torri gate! Definitely highly recommend this property and host! Highlight of our holiday in Japan
- Brent (10/5): - What a place! Night time stroll made me feel like I went back in time. The hotel was great. The sushi dinner was spectacular. Loved this experience! Will never forget it.
- Zara (10/5): - Amazing sushi dinner and authentic tatami room
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The sushi dinner was one of the best meals we've ever had. All of the staff were so accommodating. We were able to drop off our bags before check in and leave them after check out. We opted to leave our larger luggage in a coin locker at Miyajimaguchi and were very glad we did. As a family of 4 adults and 2 kids, we had full use of the two bedrooms and the bathroom (all upstairs). The steep, narrow stairs and the awkward entrance to the toilet were challenging for my elderly mother but she managed.
- Annette (10/5): - One of the best experiences I had during my three weeks trip. Traditional, close to everything and the best:
Very friendly owner, who made the best Sushi I had so far in my life. ...and I'm a Sushi lover.
Very creative..
- Dominykas (10/5): - A nice little guesthouse if you are looking for an authentic stay in a beautiful location. We were treated to an amazing dinner with a wonderful host and will be recommending this experience to everyone we meet.
- Victoria (10/5): - Amazing accommodation and host. Dinner was incredible. Very unique experience.
The food is superb but the hospitality is terrible. I needed at least an electric kettle. The futon mattress is far from comfortable and there was no blanket. I won't stay at this inn but will come again only to the sushi restaurant.
- Laurent (10/5): Diner sushi incroyable - Hôtel traditionnel, authentique et plein de charme. Très bien situé tout en étant à l’écart. Propre. Le repas sushi était incroyable. Ma meilleur expérience sushi
- Charlie (10/5): - One of the best and most unique places I’ve ever stayed. A beautiful old townhouse in the heart of Miyajima within walkable distance of the famous Torii gate. The owner is a sushi master who prepared a stunning omekase sushi dinner for us. I’d recommend staying here and making sure to get the dinner option!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Authentic Guesthouse - Such a cool experience staying in Miyajima, recommend!
- Jessica (10/5): - For those coming to Miyajima to enjoy the island after the crowds leave, this is the perfect option. It's a cosy, traditional Japanese lodging with tatami rooms, a large soaking bath and a restaurant run by the owner downstairs. He works very hard to ensure everything runs smoothly. You must also have the omakase dinner run by the talented host, he is an exceptional sushi chef and it was by far some of the best food we have had in Japan.
- Claudia (10/5): - great staff
- Constance (8/5): - This property is a traditional Japanese guesthouse, with 2 guest rooms located directly above the owners sushi restaurant. The Samurai room has sliding doors to an outdoor terrace.
Both rooms share the toilet room (which is also used by restaurant guests) and a separate shower room. We were the only guests staying, so it wasn’t a big issue.
Our reservation included an excellent omakase sushi dinner, which we highly recommend.
- Aaron (10/5): - The owner was super nice & made us the best sushi in Japan 🇯🇵. Highly recommend.
- Andres (10/5): - This place is amazing, a good taste of traditional guest houses.
The dinner was out this world, best sushi I ever had!
Staff was helpful and very polite. Would stay there again on my next visit to Miyajima.
- Veronica (10/5): - Staying at Traditional Machiya Hotel Shiomachi-An was the highlight of my trip! The sushi dinner was delicious, some of the best sushi I've ever had. The fish was so fresh and flavours were superb.
The rooms were decorated in a beautiful style, full of traditional Japanese decor. It was amazing to stay somewhere special. The owner was very warm and welcoming and I'm so impressed that he runs this place himself.
The location was excellent, set away from the super busy area, but close enough to walk to the sights and shopping.
Thank you for the lovely travel memory.
- Jasmin (10/5): - Our 2 days stay at this very traditional home was another highlight of our 3 week trip to Japan. The best of all was the incredible and very extraordinary dinner with multiple, never before experienced, sushi courses. The chief is a bit strict about how to eat the fine food, but that's part of the fun "one bite" ;). Unforgettable days! Thanks very much
- Gaston (10/5): - It is located very close to the the Itsukushima shrine and food stands and stores. The dinner course was amazing! Great sushi chef and so much sashimi! It will satisfy you plenty. Highly recommended.
- Eve (10/5): - Just stayed one night with my family and we didn’t want to leave. The house is over 100 years old but has modern conveniences and was very clean and comfortable. The futon beds were perfect. The AC was strong. And best of all was the food. Dinner was a 12-13 course omakase with fish we’ve never tasted, like blowfish. My two teens absolutely loved the experience and are already asking to go back. The owner/chef was very friendly. He went with us on a night walk and took photos of us along the way. What hospitality!
- James (10/5): Amazing sushi dinner and authentic tatami room - Authentic Japanese experience sleeping on tatami mats in historic building. We had the entire upstairs to ourselves with 2 bedrooms, large bathing room, and separate toilet room. Sushi dinner was amazing! 14 courses of some of the best sushi we have ever eaten. Breakfast was also very good with generous portions. It is a bit of a walk from ferry ~15-20 minutes and stairs to bedrooms are very steep, so I recommend leaving large luggage in a locker or something and might not be suitable for anyone with mobility issues. But definitely worth the inconvenience.
- Troy (10/5): - Our host was amazing, as was our stay. The meal we were served was prepared in front of us and absolutely divine - like having a personal chef of the highest calibre. Thank you for making our stay unforgettable.
- Jesse (10/5): - Wonderful stay in a traditional machiya. Stayed in Samurai room with terrace which was perfect to relax in after long day. Our highlight was omakase dinner with the best sushi we've ever had! Western style breakfast was delicious and not too heavy. Took chef’s advice to take evening walk to see Miyajima at night and it was perfect to see the torii gate and shrine at night without the crowds. If you can spare a night here to escape the city and experience the island in the evening would highly recommend!
Amenities are comfortable and clean though note that the bathroom and toilet are shared with the other room. No one else was staying at the same time so no issue for us. Also will be sleeping in futon you need to set up yourself.
- Maria Cyguel (10/5): -
- Belinda (10/5): - We absolutely loved our stay here! We loved everything about the island itself and our overnight stay in this traditional style home made it even better. The sushi meal provided by our host was such a great experience and so yummy. He was the loveliest host and even took us for a walk to see all the beautiful sites at night. Can’t thank you enough. It truly was one of the most memorable parts of our holiday.
- Peter (10/5): - If you want a machiya stay and kaiseki experience, this is a very well-executed version. It is what I was seeking and I was very pleased. The owner is a great chef.
- Chris (10/5): - This is a great place to stay for an authentic Japanese experience. The included dinner was delicious and we had a memorable time with the sushi chef. Staying on Miyajima Island allowed us to take a nice evening walk and this ryokan is close to all the sites. We truly enjoyed our stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Super helpful with my family, we came on a rainy night soaking wet, and the gentleman working that night was so kind to get us situated amid the chaos we dealt with coming in. He kindly did all our laundry since we were beyond tired. We felt so safe as a family staying here, and definitely got our late night rest. Food was so good as well, we didnt expect to be fed and were surprised with such good food.
- Robert (10/5): - Lovely 3 person stay. Two spacious rooms with separate bathroom and toilet. Sushi dinner (absolutely fantastic, 12 or so courses across 2 hours) and hearty breakfast were highlights. Thanks for having us!
- Stephen (10/5): - The room was in traditional Japanese style. The room was much larger than anticipated. My reservation included both dinner and breakfast. The dinner was fantastic; probably the best I experienced in Japan. The host spoke very little English, but we managed to understand each other. Very nice guy.
- Daphne (10/5): Perfect traditional guesthouse - Exceptional hidden gem. Excellent location near Itsukushima Shrine; spacious traditional rooms with futons and quality yukatas, 2 guest rooms perfect for our family of 4. To top it off, the sushi dinner and Japanese breakfast were so good and memorable - the best we tried in Japan!
- Aimee (10/5): - This hotel is exceptional - I would give it 6 stars if I could! The room was beautiful and traditional, the location great for exploring Miyajima (especially at night once the island was less crowded), and the sushi dinner was some of the best sushi I've ever had in my life.
In particular, the staff went above and beyond in being extremely welcoming, accommodating, and friendly, and they made this the most special experience of our trip to Japan!
- Shi (10/5): Fantastic Stay - Needed a place to stay overnight prior to hiking Mount Misen in Miyajima and stayed at this lovely Machiya. It's not a traditional hotel but it was quiet and a great experience sleeping in a traditional guest room. The proprietor and his apprentice were extremely hospitable and the Machiya is also a sushi restaurant at night- which was delicious. It's also is a solid distance away from the more crowded shopping row in Miyajima- would recommend for the experience.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very cosy and charming and authentically Japanese
- Mary (10/5): - Very relaxing
- Lawrence (10/5): Highly recommended! - Awesome service and experience! Kosa-San was awesome checking us in and taking care of us. It is an old Japan guesthouse, so if you have difficulty going up steep stairs, this is not the place for you. Thanks and definitely coming back!
- Corinna (10/5): Tranquility - Tranquil and tasteful, with a wonderful welcome
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A great little place that was way better overall than we expected. The owner was a gentleman who looked after everything with quiet professionalism, and who was very helpful during our stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great traditional Japanese inn. The owner showed us great hospitality.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We really enjoyed our stay here at the Miyajima Guesthouse! The staff was friendly and spoke excellent English. The process was smooth, the traditional breakfast was very enjoyable, and the room itself was a really cool traditional Japanese experience!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Location was excellent .. traditional small guesthouse experience
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Our experience at Miyajima Guest house was so so beautiful. The lovely young man who looked after us was so wonderful. His English was superb and he was so polite and helpful. When we checked out we had unfortunately left our PC tablet in our room. The efficiency of the young lady, to get it back to us was above and beyond anything we have experienced. Emails, ph calls, messages and then she organised it to be couriered to our next destination. SHE apologized to us for not seeing it when we left. It was totally our fault.
The room was so lovely, breakfast was yum. Our experience was 5 out of 5 stars. Thank you.
- Sophie (10/5): Traditional and special place to stay. - Amazing place to stay. If you get the chance to stay on the island try and get a room here. Service is brilliant and the island is magical and quiet at night
- Kevin (10/5): A nice place for one night - Very friendly and helpful staff (Lisa?). The decorations are cool and the washroom, though shared, is great. The room is a bit small for three people: when all three futons were opened and laid out on the floor, it was difficult to open the door. Also, the sink in the room was not very practical, though it looked nice. It was a nice place to stay overall for one night.
- Eddie (10/5): - This is a traditional house that has been converted into a two-room guesthouse. The guest rooms are on the second floor, up a very steep stair, a “ship’s ladder” really. The owner and staffperson are extremely helpful and nice. There’s a shared bath and a separate toilet room upstairs as well. The rooms are ample and very traditionally Japanese. Sleeping is by futon on the floor (I asked for a second futon). A modest breakfast is included, which is taken in the entry room on the first floor. Laundry will be done for a small fee and returned neatly folded later in the day.
The guesthouse is located beyond the main Shinto shrine, so away from the busy tourist area—a plus. You will end up walking back to the heart of the town to find the restaurants. All in all, a very pleasant alternative to the usual hotels and more affordable.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - There are two rooms on the first floor accessed by very steep stairs. We stayed in the rear room. At night it’s super quiet. Both rooms are decorated in a traditional Japanese style, you sleep on the floor on a double Japanese mattress, with duvet and pillows. It’s not uncomfortable but for us (we are nearly 50), after 2 nights we were happy to get back to normal beds and chairs. There is a little sink in the room and you share the toilet and shower with the occupants of the other room, which was not a bother. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience, breakfast was interesting. The Japanese seem to enjoy soup for breakfast, but for us it was a little odd. We also had fresh fruit, yogurt and toast and choice of hot drinks. We found our host to be very interesting to talk to. So happy we stayed here whilst on Miyajima and this is where we had our “traditional” Japanese experience. Thank you.
- Kay (10/5): - Loved that I felt part of the community there on Miyajima. This inn had a traditional Japanese feel along with some western touches. Staff was very nice - even coming to pick up us late from the ferry the night we checked in when cabs were no longer running.
- Mariana (6/5): Too expensive for what it is - Too small, bathroom shared with coffee customers not comfortable
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great location within walking distance to everything.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property was much better than I expected. The shower room, bathroom, and bedroom were a bite more spacious than I expected. Everything was meticulously clean.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Wonderful hotel, really helpful and friendly staff.
- Zsolt (10/5): Brilliant! - It was a fantastic stay! We don't usually stay in accommodation with shared bathrooms and we must have missed it when booking. However it was no issue at all. The guesthouse was spotless and well maintained at all times. We wanted the local experience with a room with tatami mats and low table and this place did not disappoint. It is less than 2 mins walk from the famous tori gate and close to a number of restaurants and shops. The days end rather early on the island, so we needed to change our meal times and have early dinners. It is however a great relaxing spot compared to the hustle and bustle of the large cities.
Thank you for the staff for making our stay comfortable and memorable!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely host, thoughtful touches. Beds very thick and comfortable. Bathroom a large size and very clean. Would definitely stay again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely guesthouse with character and charm. The room is traditional Japanese tatami mats with beautiful antique decor. Staff are lovely and kind.
- Nicola (10/5): - Fabulous stay, very friendly and lovely breakfast. Highly recommended
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Staff, bedrooms, bathroom, breakfast inclusions, kids breakfast at very reasonable price, and location.
- Chris (10/5): - I enjoyed my stay in Miyajima. I wasn’t feeling well the night I stayed at the guesthouse but the women at reception (I wish I knew her name) was so kind to me in the morning. The room was clean as well as the bathroom and shower room.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This was a nice cozy place to stay while visiting Miyajima. Only thing to note that I would highly recommend taking a taxi if you have large luggage. It’s only 15 minutes from the pier but the walk is brutal with a lot of things to carry.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It was very cozy and staff was very friendly
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Loved everything! Thank you! Wish we could've stayed longer!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Personal service, old world Japanese charm, great location
- David (10/5): - A lovely place to stay- very friendly staff and only 2 rooms so small and personal.
- Brendan (8/5): Have a backpack - It's a bit far from the ferry, and the stairs are very narrow. So, it's more of a backpack place not a suitcase type of place. Breakfast is cheap, but that's about it.
- CL (8/5): - It’s located in the island and good price, close to Torii. Cons: washroom is shared and not in the room
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Booking condition with Expedia and actual at hotel staff said is different.
I booked include breakfast but hotel said exclude , I booked 4 futons , hotel said , he prefer only 2 futons , if need 4 , it need extra charged,
In hotel not have toothbrush & toothpaste
, i think it should have because hotel price is high
- Clifford (10/5): - Truly enjoyed my stay here, the staff made me feel right at home. Great location on Miyajima. When you get off the ferry, go right, follow the coast, it’s past the temple.
- Jennifer (10/5): Beautiful, traditional, exceptionally located - Our stay at the Shiomachian was lovely. The guesthouse is located in a traditional Japanese-style home in a quiet neighborhood near the Itsukushima shrine. We had the Samurai room upstairs which was elegantly traditional with tatami floors, low table and cushions for day use, and futons and comforters for night. The room decor was unique, classy, and traditional (and, yes, did include a samurai painting). Towels and toiletries were provided.
Activity in town really dies down after 5pm when the shrine closes as most people only day trip to Miyajima. We loved having the town practically to ourselves in the evening, enjoying the famous torii out in the bay illuminated, sharing the quiet streets with deer and a few lorries, then to be right there in the morning as things were opening as well.
Since we checked in well after 5, our hostess (after getting us a cup of hot tea downstairs at the cafe where we checked in) marked on a map what restaurants would be open late, so that potential minor inconvenience was taken care of for us. Our room also had a private sink and a mini fridge which we appreciated as the nearest convenience stores and grocery stores are on the mainland. Shiomachian offers breakfast for a nominal additional fee, though we opted for a late morning okonomiyaki instead.
I would definitely want to stay on the island if I were to visit Miyajima again, and specifically at the Miyajima Traditional Guesthouse & Cultures Shiomachian.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The perfect Japanese experience. Extremely helpful and friendly.
- Sonia (10/5): Great experience - Absolutely amazing
- Mark (10/5): Wow - Coolest ever lobby / library / lounge bar
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great Location, great host - The location was excellent. The room was very clean and stylish. The host was very friendly.
- Jadeine (10/5): Lovely stay - Amazing hosts. Nice quiet part of the Island.
- Lance (10/5): - Highly recommend! Staff was awesome. Room was clean and comfortable with interesting traditional aesthetic. Shower/bath was impressive and a god-send after all the traveling. Welcome to come and go when you please. Felt very safe and pictures can not convey how beautiful island is. I will urge anyone I hear who is traveling to Japan to give this place a try.
- Kirstin (8/5): Great location, out of the tour groups - The hotel is in a great location, just the other side of the shrine from the tourist noise of town. Walking there takes about 15 minutes from the ferry but it is flat and you walk past all the tourist attractions on the way. Our room was a downstairs tatami room and quite quiet considering the café also run downstairs. The room would be quite small with three people in it, but fine for two. The room doesn't have a window and the air-conditioning is temperamental at best, so we did find that it got quite hot at times. The bathroom was a shared female bathroom, very clean but a little bit irritating that you couldn't use the basin or toilet if someone else was in the shower. Staff were lovely. Would stay here again.
- Ross (10/5): Night on Miyajima. - Trip to Miyajima and wanted to stay the night to avoid the crowds. Couldn’t have been made more welcome. Sensible priced and clean. Cosy room with shared bathroom etc but not an issue.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Guesthouse is located on the other side of the Miyajima Tori Shrine, which fortunately hosts fewer tourists and allows for a better opportunity to unwind. With luggage it makes for an arduous walk, however (approx 15 minutes from the port).
Staff is nice and entry to hotel is welcoming. The rooms are decent sized however little is offered beyond this. Towels provided are tiny (face towels in reality) and unlike every other place we stayed at in Japan, there was no yukata provided. We thought we saw pictures of an onsen within the property online so were disappointed to learn that we were mistaken. Given that, we felt the price of the property far exceeded its offering - perhaps a reflection of Miyajima prices in general. Breakfast choice, despite not being included in room price and instead paid as an extra, is minimal.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Proper Ryokan! Mats and everything.... Licensed though with wifi
- June (8/5): great plc to stay in miyajima - ryokan manager is lovely and very considerate. she even helped us to carry down our luggages. though the room is abit squeezing with 4 guests & our luggages
- Verified traveler (10/5): Tatami time - Wonderful experience. Small hotel only 3 rooms. You will get a lot of attention from live-in staff.
- Dick (8/5): overall is good - we used to stay in hotel all the times when travel, this is the first time we tried this traditional Japanese home style, but is very good experience for us.
- caroline (8/5): great staff - Hotel very quaint in the Japanese traditional style. Our room was up a steep set of stairs difficult to negotiate wuth a suitcase but staff offered to help. Room was veautifulky deciratex with tradional screens and furniture. We were prepated for skeeoing on futon. mats but dudnt exoect tvem to be si uncomfortable! But overall we enjoyed our stay. Tbe pistion of the guesthouse is excellent just if tbe main tourist drag.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location by the Temple - Very close to the temple, but I'd take a taxi if you have much luggage. Native English speaker manager. Very small, but part of the charm. It was fun to see the island after the tourist left. We stayed for high and low tide. Simple breakfast worked for us. Would recommend.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff was very friendly and helpful. The place had a very cozy warm ambiance. The interior was very traditional and still very convenient and comortable.
- Rebecca (10/5): Quiet place on Miyajima - This was one of the best locations I stayed at on my trip to Japan. I am so happy I decided to stay here. As I was traveling by myself it was nice to be in the only room on the main floor with the women only washroom close by. The staff were friendly and helpful. If I go to Miyajima again, I will stay there again.
- Jessica (10/5): - The guesthouse is a distance from the ferry pier but close to the main attractions. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Although cost, the room is clean and offers a traditionally Japanese experience of sleeping on tatami and in futons. They also have a kitchen for those who prefer to cook a meal, as well as laundry facilities.
- Mari (10/5): a comfortable, atmospheric stay - The host greeted us with warm green tea when we arrived which was especially nice on a cold and wet day. He even dried our sopping wet shoes for us! The inn had a nice classical atmosphere and our room was clean and cosy with tatami matting. The deep Japanese-style bath was lovely for soaking in.
- Rebecca (10/5): Amazing - Loved my stay! The staff were very friendly and attentive and the room was lovely. It was a traditional Japanese room with tatami mat floor and futon.
- nancy (8/5): Small guest house in great location. - Great people and location. Rooms simple but adequate. The room on the ground floor is nice and private for single women travelers.
Wish the futon was a bit thicker
- Verified traveler (8/5): Quiet and traditional, for sure! - We stayed one night on the island and had a good sleep in the Inn. They were very nice, the shared bath was ours as we took two rooms. We didn’t try breakfast but should have - nothing elsewhere!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Friendly English speaking staff were very welcoming and helpful with sights to see in a short time and finding somewhere for dinner as the island practically closes down at night
- Verified traveler (8/5): Clean & quiet - This is a pleasant place to stay. Manager is very polite& helpful. However for the price I paid, larger towels should be provided (at no extra cost), rather than really small ones ( my 12 yr old daughter agreed). Also, there should be a floor towel when you step out of the shower as it’s really cold(especially as it’s winter!)
