Guest Reviews
- TORU (2/5): -
- Mal (7/5): Old school charm, cheap and cheerful. - The private onsen and friendly staff. Felt dated, Beds too firm, pillows uncomfortable.
- Iris (8/5): - Staffs are very nice and helpful. Room is clean even though it's a bit outdated. Breakfast can be a bit better.
- Erico (4/5): - Good location. The onsen outside was nice, though inside it's poorly maintained and moldy. The bathroom smelled of mold very strongly! The facilities are quite dated and moldy. I found a cockroach in the room. It was quite dirty. The pillow was super uncomfortable. Definitely not worth the price!
- Lee (6/5): Interesting spot if you're looking for something unusual. - Great location. Breakfast was pretty good. The hotel itself is extremely old, much older than it looks like in the pictures. Having no beds was super disappointing and uncomfortable. It's definitely pretty quirky, and some people might consider that, charm. However, you need to know what you're in for with this place. Just a simple bed would have been good. And the price we got charged was evidently much higher than other hotels in the region.
- Tomas (6/5): Dated hotel with good outdoor onsen - Good location a few minute walk from the ski lifts, ski lockers in the hotelk and good breakfast buffet. Staff was friendly and helpful. The highlight was the outdoor onsen! Hotel is dated, not very well maintained and rooms have a stale smell. Not a major dealbreaker as keeping windows open for a few hours has helped with this. Given all this, it felt expensive.
- Geoff (6/5): Awesome location. Short flattish walk to Akakura Onsen ski field. - Excellent location for skiing at Akakura Onsen. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The property has had better days. Decor is from a bygone era. That said our rooms were spacious and clean.
- John (8/5): - Amazing onsen, extremely friendly staff, we were made to feel very welcome. Very close to the ski slope and in the town. The hotel is a bit dated, but that in itself has its own charm.
- Andrew (9/5): Someone needs to make a movie here 😆 - This was a fascinating place to stay. I was there in February to snowboard and it was a bit late in the season to get the powder I was hoping for but the hotel itself was a great compensation for the slightly disappointing conditions on the hill.
I’m an amateur photographer and it was incredible to walk through the huge maze of the hotel and take pictures. The vibe is difficult to capture but if you like a slightly eccentric movie-like experience (Wes Anderson?) with old school character this is your sort of thing. Long corridors, big dining areas, 6 different onsens (3 male, 3 female) some outdoor, some indoor; art and artworks all over the place, a couple of ping pong tables, fireplaces, circular staircase, gold and velvet, good ski equipment storage, grand and intimate at the same time, etc, etc.
Staff were very helpful (not much English but that’s standard) - complimentary shuttle bus to Myoko Kogan station; just ask and they’ll sort you out. I’m obviously a fan. I loved it.
- Phill (9/5): Recommend highly - The staff were amazing.
- Zhong Yi (7/5): Old place, great onsen, friendly staff, good Japanese breakfast, poor western options - Location was perfect. In between the Kumado lift and the main street.
Onsen, especially the outdoor one, is amazing. Tattoos are not allowed but there are private Onsens to rent, with an outdoor zen garden. Old. Things are falling apart but the staff trying their best to upkeep. It's still fully functional.
We had a "suite" with a living room and a sleeping tatami room. But the two rooms are separated by a public corridor. It's weird, but in the end it's functional and surprisingly useful. We ended up putting all our luggage and gear in the living room. Then left the sleeping room really empty and clean for sleeping.
Breakfast was mixed quality. I've stayed at cheaper and equally old fashioned hotels and ryokans (Shiga Kogen and Nozawaonsen) with much better breakfasts. The breakfast here felt like it was made without care. There was little warm food and no warm protein. Bread was hard and dry.
Sausage was hard. Fish slices boney. Scrambled eggs overly searched.
The Japanese food was great though. Tasty curry rice. Delicate tofu. Interesting side dishes including sweet marinated crickets!
- Natalie (8/5): - Hotel is located short walk to ski lifts and restaurants. Love the onsens and massage chairs after a day of skiing. Staff very friendly and helpful. The bathroom we had was very small and shower was challenging space wise.
- Stewart (9/5): -
- peter (8/5): - I liked the two room set up - one room for sleeping and the other acting as a lounge room. The outside Onsen was nice and hot. Breakfast was great. The staff were friendly I felt it was bit costly given how dated the hotel is.
- Peter (8/5): -
- lee (7/5): -
- Ruby (8/5): Amazing original onsen and ski hotel, with lovely staff - The staff were amazing and the hotel is very quirky original Onsen charm. The large onsen is amazing, and Akakura is a fun town if you like to ski. Awesome Japanese style breakfast. And good ski storage and our ski rental place around the corner collected direct from the hotel which was a nice bonus. Nothing! The buildings are old but that is part of the vibes.
- Teerachai (8/5): - good service, good breakfast good location dated room
- Martin (5/5): Lovely staff, but the hotel itself needs some love... - The staff were all very really nice, they went out of their way to make our stay pleasant. There was also a mochi making and magic shows. The kids loved it. The hotel needs a renovation. It's old and a lot of things were falling apart. The Annex rooms don't come with parking. This should be mentioned on the booking page - the alternative option was very far.
- Lacey (10/5): -
- Samara (9/5): - Close to slopes and free shuttle was great. Very friendly staff :)
- Elizabeth (10/5): - The service was outstanding. Everyone was so kind, friendly and willing to help at any request. Nothing. We loved everything.
- Branden (10/5): Perfect location, Great friendly staff - We loved the room we booked, we had a bedroom on one side of the hallway and a lounge room on the other side. We shared the room with friends and having the split room was great as you could get up early and make noise without waking others.
The hotel also provides gum boots to wear through the snow which makes getting around of a night incredibly easy.
Perfect location to the chairlifts and ski slopes
- Victoria (7/5): -
- Michiru (8/5): - The annex is old and faded, with stained carpets in the room, but the place grew on us after a couple of days. Lovely outdoor onsen and helpful staff. Also great was the proximity to the nearest ski lift.
- Matthieu (9/5): -
- Gabrielle (10/5): - The staff were amazing and super friendly. The outdoor Onsen was a massive highlight
- Marquet (10/5): - The staff were incredible, the onsens were amazing. Great place to stay and will definitely be back
- Lan (10/5): - Kindest staffs & hospitality. Beautiful outdoor hot spring. Excellent breakfast buffet. Nothing. Typical traditional Japanese hotel so it might take time to get used to. But I personally love it.
- Richard (10/5): Terrific; I would gladly stay there again. Hopefully, I am able to return soon. Thank you so much - Breakfast was great! Although it's way up in the mountains - I'm a wilderness, mountain country guy. Loved every minute of my stay. Wish I could have stayed longer....Fukuda-san was truly professional, courteous, and gracefully pleasant. He should be commended for his proficiency and willingness to satisfy clients attending your facility. Maybe the onsen could use a little resurfaced renovation. Recommend modifying the WIFI as well, very weak signal prevented effective connectivity.
- Leif (10/5): Relaxing but exciting adventure in an ancient haunted hotel and onsen. - The hotel is a beautiful old hotel. Facilities are old but excellent. Breakfast was unbelievably good. The place is over 200 years old, and has hidden underground tunnels which made it feel like an adventure in a haunted hotel. The onsen facilities are numerous, huge, and well worth it. The town is cute and probably amazing during the season. The town was a bit abandoned since it was only a few weeks after the ski season ended. I would probably go again and stay even longer if I went during the Summer, Fall, or Winter. My timing was just not great (early April).
- Craig (4/5): The fire place in the Annex area communal room was never lit & would increase the ambience. - Great onsen , location , good food & good access to
Ski area & restaurants No hot water in an ensuite room & kerosine heater smell. The hot water boiler has been broken for years & never fixed.
- Stephen (10/5): Very good - Nice breakfast and good onsens Problems with water boiler
- Dale (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bradley (10/5): Exceptional -
- Harin (5/5): Passable - It was central to Akkakura Onsen Town Everything is old and worn out.
- Robin (7/5): Very convenient, easy, allowed us to focus on shredding all day every day. - If you're skiing in Myoko you can't go wrong with this place. It's a hybrid western/japanese style hotel. The rooms were clean and comfortable. 3 of us shared a room with 2 beds and a good sized tatami. It was a little pricier than some basic Ryokans we stayed at, but considering the quality of breakfast, the number of hot springs on sight, and the free shuttle from the door, it ended up being pretty reasonable. Avoid trying to eat western style foods at the breakfast or you will surely be disappointed. We are advanced skiers and enjoyed Kanko for 4 days straight, 2 on the mountain after 108cm of fresh pow, and 2 skinning up above the top chair once that fresh snow was skied out. Despite what the web indicates, there are tonnes of touring options from the top of Kanko. We could have just bought a single up pass the last couple days, though being able to use the top lift to extend your ski down is pretty useful. Be careful trying to ski back to the hotel at the end of the day, it's very easy to overshoot the town by quite a long way and add a 45 minute hike when your legs are already rubber. If you get it right you can ski pretty much right to the door of the hotel. Ping pong table was great. We were feeling pretty cheap at the end, and had a few suppers on our table in the room, followed up by hot springs and ping pong. . . no need to leave and spend more money! Wifi kinda sucked, but we were in the annex (cheaper) area of the hotel. There are many networks around the hotel and none of them went very far. Western style food in the breakfast was bad, but the japanese options more than made up for it. Try everything!
- Lachlan (9/5): Fantastic location and extremely helpful staff - Lovely lady and staff at the front desk who went above and beyond for our stay considering it is a 3 star hotel. Just some boiler noise in the morning for heating but wasn't really an issue
- Mark (3/5): Poor -
- Katie (10/5): I loved this hotel and loved its location - Location, staff, and private onsen They bath room in our room was not cleaned before arrival
- Shaun (4/5): Disappointing -
- Diane (8/5): Will be back. - Quirkiness of the artwork and decor. Staff were so friendly. The BEST Onsen - to sit under a cherry tree with snow falling was magical. So handy to the ski lifts and village It was a bit tired looking and in need of some upgrades. Heating was a bit noisy and you couldn’t drink the water.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
