The rooftop is my favorite place and Zach, the bartender/barista whatever is needed guy, is the man to talk to about Malibu. Loved everything. Although I wouldn’t mind a coffee or espresso machine in the room.

Facilities and staff were forth rate - NA --no breakfast Room was below the second floor kitchen --- loud until 10:15 pm and at 6;45 am, TV signal was erratic -- cutting in and out Electric Vehicle charger did not work Front Desk person did not have a clue on any failing facilities -- or seem to give a rip. Resort fee plus parking fee -- not good
- H1447AYlauraf (6/5): Beautiful hotel but noisy, dark graund floor rooms were super disappointing - We were so excited to stay at this boutique hotel. The photos are lovely, and the decor and aesthetics are beautiful. We had no idea it was across the street from the beach (not on the beach) and it sits at a very busy intersection. Between the nonstop traffic and the dark, ground-floor room vibrating w/ the cars and the people upstairs, it was immediately disappointing. We tried to get out of our second night and no such luck. They looked at me like that was an insane request and dismissed it outright. Sigh. If you are a heavy sleeper and don't mind highway noise and vibrations, it is otherwise lovely.

We loved the boutique of the hotel! The rooftop restaurant was amazing with great food and drinks Our room smelled amazing not to mention, and had all the things that you would want if you were going to pamper yourself!
- sn0w_violet (10/5): Sun-kissed Stay - From the moment we arrived, service was impeccable. The front desk staff & the restaurant servers all made us feel like we were home. Our naturally lit, cozy room was beautifully appointed; even the robes were deliciously soft. Our first night, we ordered 3 entrees and each voted for different favorites (always a good sign). The ambiance was fantastic, the cocktails were excellent, and the food was truly outstanding. Our experience at dinner prompted our decision to stay in for breakfast and for lunch the following day - and every single dish was stunning. In fact, we even returned, post check-out, for a repeat of the veggie bowl with chicken (a must). The VIEW: imagine twinkling sunshine, a lineup of surfers catching perfect waves, the Malibu pier…all while sipping their signature drink - The Endless Summer. Simply put, heaven. Their tiny gift shop has such a great selection of candles (our favorite), clothing, prints, and essential oils. Sunscreen too, if needed. We went home with 5 candles, 2 sweatshirts and the most adorable print. The complimentary morning coffee and electric car charging were unexpected, delightful touches. After checking out, we were informed of a forgotten item via chat - they even offered to ship it to us, if we weren’t able to return in-person. We were so grateful that they reached out before we left the L.A. area. As lovers of boutique hotels and beautiful experiences, this stay exceeded even our highest expectations. They have taken time to maximize each sq ft of the room with great attention to detail. The roof top experience is incredible that is relaxing, great drink option and healthy food choices and very good customer service. There are multiple room options to fit your budget. Must stay in Malibu
- Sheldon (4/5): - No beach view. Porch completely covered by bushes and vines. Nothing to see. Right next to parking lot. Very noisey since next to highway. Service horroble. At the restaurant for breakfast and dinner. Never provided a napkin. Had to request a fork or spoon. Had to get my own menu each time. Espresso machine was broken. Coffee maker had to warm up....not sure how that.is a thing. Basically ignored my restaurant staff. Food was terrific though. Great head chef. Overall very disappointing.

Es gab Strandstühle, Strandtücher, eine Badetasche und Surfbretter gratis zum an den Strand mitnehmen. Das Personal war sehr nett. Es war viel zu teuer. Das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis hat nicht gepasst. Das Essen im Dachrestaurant war auch zu teuer und zu wenig. Im Zimmer gab es leider Ameisen.

- Madeleine (6/5): Stylish Hotel but did not meet expectations - The style of the hotel is amazing, free surfboard renting, nice rooftop terrace, 22 $ for one Aperol Spritz (Food and Beverage prices are very high), very loud (hotel is next to main street), no coffee machines in the room but there is coffee service which is not on time. The team is very kind and friendly but they don't pay a lot of attention (you have to wait for a long time to order and for everything else)
- Ioana Ruxandra (9/5): Amazing property - The location of the hotel is great, you can easily access all the top restaurants and cafes in Malibu. The rooftop is incredible and makes for a great remote work spot or a quick drink. The rooms are clean and cozy. The hotel also comes with a library which is equipped with board games and cozy couches, perfect for a night in with friends. Overall, because this is a small hotel, you get a familiar vibe. My room was on the ground floor and there were quite a few ants, even saw some in the bed.

We decided to eat every meal at the rooftop restaurant since it was so wonderful. Fresh farm to table. Super friendly staff and very quiet. Not a scene but more of a hidden gem. I’d go back.

- Gary (8/5): - First the good: The staff was very friendly and attentive. The view of the ocean and pier was great. The room was clean and simple. It had a great 'beachy' vibe the fit the venue perfectly. The roof top area was a nice place to relax and have a drink. Plenty of things to do in the area. The not so great: The room was not ready at check in and we had to wait almost an hour. The view of the ocean is obstructed by the bushes growing in front of the hotel. The bottle brush needs to be trimmed level with the railing. There were a lot of ants in the room and on the balcony. The bushes are growing against the hotel and thats why the ants are getting in the rooms. The bushes should be trimmed away from the hotel. The water was shut off briefly, but it was not a big deal. The rooms are missing some basic things you may be used to, microwave, iron, closet, trash can (other than the bathroom), coffee pot (you can get coffee or tea delivered), etc. These are very minor issues and they did not spoil our stay, its still an amazing hotel.

The only issue was there was a bit of an ant infestation in the room and certain key. Things were damaged like broken hammock on the balcony, broken bottle cap in the bottle of water in the room so that it was difficult to open. And ripped robe. Outside of these little things it would’ve been perfect.

It’s a small hotel which made it more personal, there was a little note with my name on it when I arrived to the room. I’d stay here again if I ever go back to Malibu.

The staff member we dealt with was very knowledgeable and had great suggestions on where to visit in Malibu. Also the property is very green with wild flowers. The room was excellent really enjoyed the ambiance and relaxing feel. The bed was great had a super night’s sleep. The bathroom was great with a powerful shower and high end wash gels. There wasn’t much to dislike for a short stopover however there could be more options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The breakfast options were very limited and lunch and dinner was unavailable. The room doesn’t have coffee making facilities but has a full minibar. No gym facilities or swim facilities which could be easily installed.

Loved this property and will visit again. The recent fires and mudslides / closure of PCH caused the staff shortage which meant no dinner on property. But we understand.

I do wish the rooftop dining was fully open (they only had very limited pre-packaged options right now), but I understand they are getting back on their feet. I would absolutely stay there again.

- Jessica (10/5): A Must Stay!!! - This was the cutest boutique hotel. It was very clean, very comfortable with many personal touches. They were the nicest hosts and I would tell anyone who is coming to Malibu to stay here. We absolutely fell in love with the kind hosts, the cute decorations, the personal note and water, and all the amenities! Such a gem of a place! And it’s across the street from the Pier and direct access to the beach!

- Shalini (9/5): Wonderful stay, wonderful vibes! - A wonderful gem on the pacific coast highway, right across from the Malibu Pier. Here for a concert 2 doors down, at Aviator Nation Dreamland. Enjoyed both rain and sunshine during our 2 night stay. Be aware the rooftop bar not open, but could still hang out and bring own food and drinks up there. It’s an amazing place to just chill and watch surfers. We had a ground floor room, which is nice, and stylish- and with the rooftop access made you not feel so claustrophobic. Staff very helpful and friendly, setting us up with plates, etc for our to-go food. There’s also another wonderful space to hang out- the library, just above the lobby- cozy and warm ambiance. Be aware that construction and cleanup is ongoing, with dump trucks coming and going from the Palisades fire areas, but rooms are soundproofed well. Many restaurants running on scaled-back hours still, so call ahead to confirm they are open. Glad to be able to come and support local businesses trying to recover. 😁 Watch out if you leave any food sitting out in your room- ants will invade!

By far the worts hotel on thus trip

Staff were very friendly and helpful. 2/10 WiFi. Slow WiFi and limited connection in the room. Had to roam in the bed. And WiFi to the TV was tardy. 1/10 Noise. Extremely loud from the highway outside. Heard every car and got the worst night sleep of the trip. I wish I had known this as I’m extra sensitive to sounds. 2/10 Value for money. Paid nearly $1000 for a night as they nearly doubled prices over the holidays. We got a lot more value for money at the hotels in e.g. Hollywood. Overall verdict: very nice hotel, but we are unlikely to stay here again as the noise levels impacted our sleep far too much.
- 751mollya (10/5): Surfrider is perfect for surf watching too! - This place is soooooo cool. The staff is friendly and kind. The hotel is hip and the rooms are amazing. They smell so good that I bought the room spray! There was lavender in my bathroom, cool hammock on the balcony, a yoga mat in the room, and plenty of places to plug in all my stuff. I loved the coffee brouht to the room in the morning with a surf report and weather report. They provide a cute handout that tells you places to go in the area and I took 2 days and did just that. I saw amazing beaches and cool shops. I sat upstairs and watched the surfers while eating breakfast and really enjoyed the farm to table dinner too. My only and I do mean only " dislike" was that I was directly under the service bar so I could hear them in the evening. That said, the hotel warned me and even had a white noise machine in the room. It wasn't that loud and they were quiet before I was bed bound. I so hope to get to go back to this amazing spot. Maybe this time, I will just use the towels and beach bag and hang at the beach, eat at the pier, and read in the adorable library upstairs from the lobby.

Staff were amazing - so friendly but not over the top so you feel like you’re staying in your own little place. Amazing attention to detail. Coifee brought to your room in the morning. Beautiful roof terrace with an amazing vibe and view. Would love to come back amd surf for a week!

The staff are extremely friendly and helpful - nothing seems too much trouble. Be prepared to pay top dollar for cocktails, when combined with the views from the rooftop terrace (for hotel guests only), worth it. Only downside was the noise from the PCH (right in front of the property) but there isn't much the hotel can do about that!
- kimtM4617AC (4/5): Lost its charm - I've been coming to The Surfrider for the past three years for my birthday as well as the occasional spontaneous staycation, but ever since Casetta Group took over management in Sept. 2023 and began focusing more on influencer marketing, the hotel has lost a lot of its charm. That being said, it obviously has held a special place in my heart (hence why it pains me to write this), so I’ll start with some positives: Communications: You can text the front desk for any requests and room service, which is massively convenient. The room: Each room I’ve stayed in has been cozy, inviting, and outfitted with great amenities like Grown Alchemist products and beach towels and a beach bag for guests to use. The linens are so incredible that I’ve purchased the same set for my own home. As other reviewers have pointed out, the walls are thin and you can’t escape the noise from the highway, but I’ve never minded — if you do, however, there are earplugs and even a white noise machine in the room for your use. Morning coffee service: You can fill out a coffee card each night for free coffees to be delivered to your room in the morning. Such a special touch! The rooftop: The Surfrider has the best rooftop view in Malibu (even better than Soho House Malibu, IMO). If you arrive early, you can check in and leave your bags downstairs and enjoy the rooftop, and you can even enjoy the rooftop for the rest of the day after you check out. Front desk staff: The staff at reception went above and beyond. In previous years, one amenity included was a scented room spray in each room; on this trip, I was told via text that they’ve done away with sprays in the room as of earlier this week, but would be selling them for $65. When I expressed disappointment, the staff offered to have me pick up a bottle for the room for the remainder of the trip, and I truly appreciate the thoughtfulness. As for the negatives, I’d say it was the overall service. A week and a half before my visit, the hotel reached out to inform us that there would be kitchen renovations during the time we’d be there, and as such, there would be a limited menu of just light bites during the day. While this isn’t a huge deal, it wasn’t listed on the website, and I would have liked to have had this in consideration before booking. It would also have been nice to receive some kind of food/beverage credit for the inconvenience if they weren’t able to notify earlier. While everyone working the front desk was lovely, the service on the rooftop restaurant during this stay left a lot to be desired. With the exception of one time, each time I visited the rooftop throughout a 2 nights/3 day stay, the staff wouldn’t acknowledge me unless I chased them down. On one occasion, I was alone on the rooftop, and a couple came up after me and were immediately tended to and served mocktails and menus before I was able to flag someone to acknowledge me. When we tried to order room service one night, we were told the two items we wanted weren’t available (it seems the menus on the roof and the room are different, and the ones in the room weren’t updated), so we ended up DoorDashing from a nearby restaurant. On the second night, we ordered the items that were available, but the pappardelle pasta with Italian sausage that my friend ordered came with no sausage or sauce, so we had to notify the front desk and wait while they re-made the dish. On the last morning before checkout, I sat on the roof for 30 minutes and no one stopped by to offer any menus or water, so I gave up on breakfast and left. As another reviewer mentioned, they don’t do anything special like a glass of bubbly for birthdays or anniversaries, you’re just given the option to purchase things to be put in your room ($60 for a batch of 3 servings of cocktails, etc). This felt more understandable when they were a smaller operation, but now that they’ve been taken over by a hospitality group, it feels a little egregious. Overall, it’s a nice place with a great location, but has gone on the decline since last year. I’d be open to trying another stay here at some point (and would update my review if I ever did), but it feels like it might be time to move on to other hotels in the area, especially for the price. My feedback would be to focus less on influencers and more on improving overall experience for all guests.

- Juliane (10/5): - Surfrider is a quaint, boutique hotel in beautiful Malibu. We stayed here while visiting Pepperdine University nearby and had a wonderful experience. The staff were friendly and accommodating, and the beach house vibe was exactly as advertised. My only feedback to keep in mind for future guests is that it is not quiet (PCH is very noisy) and it is VERY difficult to get a ride-share (Uber or Lyft). If you have to get somewhere on time, just take into account that an Uber may take a long time and there's no guarantee that there will be one at all. Will definitely be back!!

- Brad (4/5): - More like a motel than a hotel-It’s on hwy 1, so traffic noise is to be expected- At first our experience was great Ariel the manager set us up with a room with a comfortable bed- The AM delivered coffee from the roaster they partnered with was amazing- The hotel has a upper deck where u can drink your coffee while you watch the pacific- amazing view, but the experience crashed when i pulled a long hair out of my eggs- that in itself would not be so bad if not for the additional hairs my wife then pointed out to me- They were not the kind from your head- Disgusting… was it because i ordered no toast? One bad actor should not ruin it for the good staff, so if you go here just don’t eat!

- Milton (6/5): - The location by the beach is great. We had a downstairs room with no view of the beach and in hindsight should have forked out additional for room with view. Some of the staff were very disinterested😕. There is no coffee making facilities in the room and they forgot to deliver our complimentary morning coffee which wasnt a biggie - nor did it seem to be for them. We found the food average with about an hours wait between courses. If we stayed again we would flag the onsite food and dine at the pier restaurant across the road. The food there was excellent. Overall a pretty avg stay in what could be a much better hotel experience.

The hotel faces the beach with PCH directly in front of you before the beach. It is noisy, but the insulation in the rooms is pretty good. Overall I’d give it an 8/10 rating though whether it was worth the $10k for two rooms for 5 nights is questionable.

The noise level in the rooms from the highway outside is unbearable. No chance you get a good night sleep there. Couldn’t stay there and had to leave. - Q2152NEjaned (2/5): Use Caution Booking This Hotel - I’m sure this is a beautiful hotel with a top notch restaurant. Unfortunately we couldn’t experience any of it and lost money due to their rigid cancellation policy. My husband and I were literally driving up to the hotel for our anniversary (an hour into our drive), planning to drop our kids and puppy off at my mom’s when we got a call from my mom saying she got sick and couldn’t watch the kids. My sister, who was also our plan B to watch the kids and dog, also got sick. While we could’ve quickly found a pet boarding hotel to drop our dog off on the way to the hotel (super not ideal because she’s a puppy), the person I spoke to told us they didn’t have any rollaway beds on site nor a ton of space for a rollaway bed/air mattress if we brought one for our kids. At this point, we felt like it wasn’t in our cards to even make the 3 hour drive up since we didn’t have a solid place to take our puppy or our kids, we called the manager and asked if we could reschedule our visit or get some refund…she flat out said “No” and said they have a very strict 7 day cancellation policy. I asked to speak to her boss or send her boss an email, she said that she couldn’t give me her email address, but that she’d try to text the general manager but that she will likely say No as well. So I asked for the contact info of the hotel owners/company to plead our case, but she said she wasn’t at liberty to give me any contact information. She did offer 1) for me to get a second room to accommodate our kids (which for over $700/night, it’s not worth it) or 2) to try to resell the hotel room online but said that there was a slim chance someone would take it this late in the day. She also said they are a small hotel and that our reservation probably prevented someone from reserving the room, but obviously they had a room available (the one they offered to us for our kids!)ty, so we didn’t prevent anyone from reserving the room because there was still availability! Given that this was a family emergency and a very extreme and rare circumstance, I was blown away by their lack of consideration or accommodation. I was surprised that the manager didn’t think the management company wouldn’t even bother to hear our case. Customer service is absolutely lacking. It’s not like we were trying to scam the hotel…we were literally driving to the hotel with a packed car. We ended up taking the $ loss, turning around and going home. Please use caution when you book a room at this hotel because their cancellation policy is absolutely terrible.

The entire property looks like a motel, which I didn't expect. Rooms were smaller than expected. BUT quality of room itself was very nice...staff was exceptional...food was very, very good. Rooftop experience was very very nice. Nothing can be done about this point...but just realize that this isn't a remote beachfront retreat...it's right alongside the highway and on a tiny stamp of land, so you can't meander about. Still a great choice, all things considered. Simply, not a "resort" or a larger property like Laguna's Hideaway.

The property was well taken care of and in a great location, the room was comfortable, the staff was excellent, and food and drink options were delicious. The amenities were a nice touch as were the optional add ons. We had a great time surfing with Pete and would definitely recommend the surf lessons. Can’t wait to come back!

Our room was right off the parking lot so we had a lot of noise beyond just the highway. The roof deck is what makes the hotel. It’s priced like a luxury hotel and delivers a comfortable place to stay in a good location. To be clear, the staff is really great, friendly and helpful. The hotel is just way overpriced for what it is. If you didn’t feel gauged by the price you would be extremely happy. 600+ a night for a ground floor double room is laughable. Thus the price to be in Malibu. I was there for work and wanted to be close to the venue so I didn’t have to rent a car. I should have rented a car and stayed further away. You’re charged with an amenities fee for their beach gear they have available, and they also charge you a 3% bed linens fee. One would think 600 a night could cover your linens and the beach gear. Ask for a damage deposit rather than asking your customer to pay for your beach chairs and surf boards.
