Guest Reviews
- paparazi1646 (6/5): Ok - Hotel is ok not the best not worst but I’ve expected a little bit more. For over 800€ for 3 nights. But restaurant is really bad. Atm 2nd day and 2nd time no food that we should get. Stuff is only saying that we have to wait. Do something with it and make a change
- PATRIK (6/5): - Pobyt v hoteli bol dostatočujúci, príjemný. To, čo by som zmenil, strava v reštaurácii a personál v nej. Z 10 bodov by som dal 3 body.
- lucik_pucik (6/5): Renovated & central hotel, ignorance of COVID-19 rules - We stayed at the Hotel Toliar for a long weekend in August. The hotel itself exceeded my expectations, as the rooms were renovated, big, had lots of storage space and spacious balconies with nice views. I have been coming to the Strbske Pleso area since I was a baby so I knew the hotel is quite old and was pleasantly surprised by the modern rooms. The rooms were very clean when we arrived. The location is also fantastic, close to the train station, lots of restaurants, a mini market and many beautiful hiking trails. The breakfast was alright, nothing amazing but not too bad either. The pool is quite small and has a view of the parking garage and guests unfortunately have to pay to enter.
What was truly awful was the complete ignorance of COVID-19 rules. Nobody wore face masks anywhere, including the very crowded breakfast area (they still do open buffets even though every hotel I have been to since the beginning of the pandemic has now switched to the staff giving you the food you ask for). Guests do not wear face masks in the hallways, in the tiny elevator, in the reception area or, as I said, in the buffet line. And, unfortunately, the staff does not wear masks either. The cleaning staff wore no masks, the reception staff wore no masks, the spa staff wore no masks (incl. the masseuse), the restaurant staff wore masks on their chins. As a result, 3 out of 4 adults in our group got sick a few days after we came back home (luckily just a cold).
I also didn't like that even though our rooms were very clean when we arrived, all the cleaning staff did during our stay was provide clean towels and new toilet paper but did not clean anything in the rooms (not even make the beds or wipe the floors).
I cannot comment on the restaurant, we never ate there except for the breakfast, due to the bad reviews. Instead, I can highly recommend the restaurant Furkotka across the street which has fantastic food and very friendly staff (although they also don't wear masks, it seems that the local staff hopes for another lockdown).
- Verified traveler (10/5): Pozitívne. - Personal milý a profesionálny.
- Zbigniew (10/5): - Hotel czysty adekwatny jakościowo do ceny.Personel miły .
- RH709 (4/5): Poor restaurant service - We stopped at the Toliar restaurant as it was snowing heavily and it was the closest place to stop for a coffee and a quick bite. The menu was limited when it comes to light bites. We ordered 2 black teas with milk, latte, fruit punch and a hot chocolate. In addition to this we asked for two small platters of cheese. The black tea arrived with milk and a slice of lemon. Hot chocolate took 10mins to arrive. The cheese platters were plates with 10 thin slices of cheese and 3 halved grapes. The service was poor. It was evident after a short while, only certain tables were getting attention. The staff were lacking customer service. I wouldn't recommend and certainly won't be returning.
- monikakk339 (6/5): Spa staff - The hotel is very nice, good restaurant and location. But they close the spa area one hour earlier and the staff there (in spa area) has quite rude behavior. We came to spa one hour before closing and every sauna was turned off already.
The rest is fine and the rooms are really clean.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - krásna reštaurácia a milý prístup personálu, čistá izba
- Jaroslaw (10/5): positive - Doskonała lokalizacja dla miłośników wycieczek wysokogórskich, w pokoju duży komfort i wygoda, aneks kuchenny z działająca lodowką
- TereziaCv (10/5): Restaurant - My boyfriend and I had a pleasant lunch at the hotel restaurant - I found the choice of food very nice as it wasn't just the typical lot you get at any other Slovak restaurant, but instead it consisted of a smaller choice of interesting dishes. The portions were good and filling, the prices were reasonable for High Tatras, especially since the hotel is right next to the train station on the way to the lake. The staff were very nice and the interior was lovely. Only one flaw - their card machine was broken, and although there is a very conveniently placed ATM in the lobby, it charged me 2€ despite the sign stating that it wouldn't and my bank does not charge any withdrawal fees.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Brilliant location.
Reception staff were very friendly
- lubos33 (8/5): Good value for money with top location - Ist good for hikers, central location...some 50 m from the local High Tatras rawaystation. They cook good and provide prima Wellness with a small Pool that can make one, after a long mountinghike,
reborn again.
- Paul (8/5): Pleasant stay. - This hotel is a five-minute walk from Strbske Pleso, a beautiful lake (pleso) in front of the High Tatras. The service was pleasant and our room was cozy. The room had a refrigerator, a stove, a sink, and some dinnerware. It has its own wellness area with an indoor pool, a spa, sauna, etc., but for a fee. They also had a market if you need some grocery items for your stay. Our reservation came with a breakfast and they served the typical European menu of bread, eggs, bacon, etc. They also had some salads and fruits.
- W946PUpeters (6/5): Expect only the minimum but not more - The restaurant looks nice and is not bad, but the quality and variety of food is only average. Toilets are disaster doasnt make sense to talk about - if you find them ! The food is ok but nothing special. Expect long waiting time and not very friendly waiters who seems to be there not for the guests but only for the salary. Maybe I was there only at wrong day :(. High level review its ok but not more than average.
- aliaJ9529JD (8/5): acceptable - I travelled with my mother to High Tatras for a 3-night stay. Nice room, veeeery nice bathroom (up-dated), big sunny balcony. Appropriate breakfast for a 3 star hotel. Restaurant with reasonable prices. I also visited the sauna world, 6 different types of sauna and a nice quiet relaxation area. The pool area - not ideal. Staff - not ideal, but ok. All in all - good value for money. We extremely appreciated the in-house supermarket. Hotel is ideally located, so that also my mother, who is over 80, was able to go for a walk around the mountain lakes at Strbske Pleso and also to walk comfortable to the rail-way station.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice Hotel in a wonderful area. - Enjoyed the area, hotel staff was great at helping us, location of hotel was good.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good location very tasty breakfast. - Very close to the rail station, in center of town. Hotel room very basic but very pleasing. Excellent hotel staff.
- djj2212 (6/5): Acceptable average, a lot of things to improve, especial the staff - Hotel has a good location, only few steps from rail station and in the centre of Strbske Pleso. It has own parking house, ski room with lockable boxes, free ski-bus, nice big SPA with swimming pools and various saunas and stylish restaurant with traditional Slovak decore. Rooms are large, partly renovated. Food is good.
This is a big hotel, visited with families with children, so if you are looking for quiet, find something else.
Personnel is mostly diligent but lacking of professionalism. Only one member of staff wore name tag, bartender Dusan. Others were (better) anonymous. This is unacceptable and also against the law. They do not greet guest by entering to the restaurant, coming to the reception desk or meeting in corridors of the hotel. No one did it during our 5 days stay. They do not even give you priority in walking. Waiters are not able to remember your order, face or what you have to pay for sometimes - they even tell you it :) There are nice members also, I would tag them concretely, but all staff is anonymous as I mentioned above.
Food is fine and with good variety. There is bufe during the whole day also for no-accommodated guests. Dishes was not always clean, so be careful.
Restaurant with bar is very nice, there are two fireplaces, a lot of traditional Slovak decore, fur-lined seats. Again staff - they let the tables uncleansed until new guest sit.
Room are big enough, what is plus when you have a winter holidays. There is a rough carpet, clean, but smelling from carpet cleaner. I thing that the little smell was from it. Room was clean but stood untouched during our 5 day stay. They only put fresh towels on the bed (sometimes only one towel instead of two).
There is no hairdryer, refrigerator, safe, teapot in the rooms - it should be a standard in 3* hotel.
My suggestion: I think that hotel with this capacity would better care about the clients also to give them some program every evening. It would be easy coverable by increasing of turnover in the bar by this number of clients. Now there is no animation program, nothing, just the bar. We spent there the New Year's Eve Party and it was pretty boring. Only some local wedding band, no Dj, no program, no tombola, no MC... nothing. It would be also a good idea to thing during the making of seating plan and look at least of guests' birthdays, if they are a young couple, family with children or a retired couple. Not just to mix people in alphabet or random order.
Prices are high, comparable to the centre of Slovak capital city, but it is expected in this location. It would be also nice to offer the expected standard of services for it.
- gabisvec (10/5): Excellent Service!!! - Although I originate from Slovakia, my family and I have lived abroad for about 16 years now. We travel back home every summer, but usually stay close to family and friends and our travels are short distance. This year, however, I have decided to introduce my homeland to my children and visit High Tatras with them. We traveled across the country and due to a car accident on the road, we arrived to our destination later than anticipated. A friend of mine and her two kids we were traveling with had made a reservation for themselves at Hotel FIS in Strbske Pleso and even though without reservation, we were hoping to find a room for one night there as well. However, the personal there was very unfriendly and not accommodating at all. We were left without a room to stay and the time was getting closer to 9pm. When asked whether they could recommend any other accommodations, they gave as two numbers to call from our own mobiles, which is something I have never experienced in any other Hotel I've stayed in a past. Needless to say, one of the hotels was fully packed, however, I tried another one, which happened to be Hotel "TOLIAR" and a friendly young voice on the phone was the most kind and welcoming we could have ever hoped for. Although without reservation, a young gentleman named KAMIL GLADIS had promised to do his best to find us a room for that night. He welcomed us with a big smile and managed to move things around, so we could have a room to stay over night. Due to our delay on the road, our kids didn't get to have a proper dinner and the kitchen at Hotel TOLIAR was closing at 10pm. I've expressed our desire to eat to Mr. Gladis and he managed to help us with that as well. I was very surprised by his kindness and professionalism, especially after visiting Hotel FIS. Because of their excellent service, my kids and I have decided to stay another night. We had breakfast and dinners at their restaurant and were just as pleased with service and amazing food as well. Not only am I going to share this with my friends and you, but next time we are visiting High Tatras, I know exactly where we are staying!
THANK YOU KAMIL for all your HELP and accommodations, because of YOU my kids and I had the best time EVER in High Tatras!
- Josef (10/5): Skvělý hotel za rozumnou cenu - Výborný hotel, příjemný personál, skvělá kuchyně.
- VFM55 (6/5): Excellent value for money - Stayed here for 3 nights whilst on a walking holiday with friends. The hotel is centrally located, less than a two minute walk from the railway station. Check in was efficient and friendly. Room was above average size with plenty of cupboards and wardrobes. The room I was in was at the back of the hotel and still had a large balcony, however, the view was principally of the multi-storey car park. The room had a shower and toilet and a separate toilet. My only criticism would be the under floor heating which you cannot control yourself. The small separate toilet was like a sauna, that said it came in handy for drying wet walking gear and drying small items of laundry. I found the bed comfortable and slept well. Breakfast was the usual hotel buffet style, plenty of choice though not always as hot as it could be, perhaps just bad timing. The staff in the restaurant and bar were either great or abysmal, one was keen to serve and please his customers and the other made it abundantly clear that she did not want to be there and was anxious to get people out before 22.00 hours so that she could leave promptly. Ate in the restaurant twice, both occasions perfectly OK, not brilliant but not awful, simply middle of the road. A lot of dishes sold by weight, so if you have a hearty appetite increase your portion size by paying more. There is also a small supermarket on site, ideal for rations whilst out walking. Overall, given the very reasonable price, it is excellent value for money and the minor criticisms for within tolerances, you can always drink and eat elsewhere. Overall, I would go back.
- weracsemi (10/5): Delicious food, excellent service - During our 6 day stay at Strbske Pleso we had dinner here 4 times. Mr. Nemcek was our waiter and we could not ask for a nicer person to serve our food. The quality of the meals was just perfect and the price is totally acceptable. We would definitely go back for that mushroom sauce :)
- Ponuponas (6/5): Place just to sleep - This place is good enough if need just a place for sleep. The price is cheap. The service also. But price fits its level. All is ok. Good place for hikers, MTB bikers and etc.
Hotels restaurant is average level too. For those who want to eat very very much swedish table fits perfect.
- simonad310 (2/5): AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! - Visited the restaurant for a quick lunch, which was the worst mistake we could have made.
The waiter (male with short black hair) was extremely rude and arrogant. I accidentally left my phone inside the menu and handed it over to him after ordering. Straight after I realised I was missing my phone, so I went over to him and asked if he could check the menus as I believe it could be there. He just pointed at a pile of menus on the side and told me to look through it. After I told him that the phone wasn't there and asked if he could check the cameras for me, he just said "cant help you with that" and completely ignored me!! I asked another waitress for her assistance, who then said the manager will check the cameras with me. The manager was absolutely brilliant and took her time to help me. My phone was found somewhere on the floor (clearly taken by the waiter with my menu).
The worst part about this was that whilst the waiter was aware of the fact that I was in the office with the manager, he brought out the starters AND the mains! !!! So by the time I returned, my whole meal had been sat on the table waiting for me. When we asked why he didn't tell the chef not to cook our mains yet, he just told us that it was ready so he brought it out. Completely oblivious to the fact that it had all gone cold.
We had the duck breast with cabbage and pancakes. I asked for my duck to be cooked medium. Instead we both got overcooked hard duck breast with Bland hard pancake and tasteless cabbage. The waiter did not care about this at all and still made us pay full price without any kind of apology!!!! Absolutely disgusted with this place and would not recommend for anyone to visit. We wasted 30 euros for a bland cold meal served by ignorant rude waiters!!!!!
- Omendata (10/5): Toliar Top Budget Hotel In Tatra - We stay here every year even though we have the option of the Banik , Kempinski and various other hotels in Strebske Pleso.
The reason we stay are the amazingly helpful staff at reception, the superb vitalny svet , excellent position and views over the tatras, integrated little supermarket and tourist shops and so close to the Funicular railway that gets you here, all amenities and other restaurants - notably the superb Furkotka. I have to laugh at one other review on here a few weeks after we were there and must agree with the barman comment - he was extremely rude and should be fired - it was almost like it was a chore to serve the public so we didnt bother with the bar. Unfortunately in Slovakia where i have stayed for a number of years the customer service is really poor - there are no such things as tipping either; not that, that should be any incentive but i do comprehend the attitude as the wages are so poor - the average is around £400 a month so in a way I can understand but in another I believe in 101% customer service in everything I do which I realise is unique anywhere in the world now but the hotel should really pay attention to genuine reviews and check their staff regularly!
The restaurant is superb with plenty of Slovak Jedla/Food on offer for the most penurious of traveller and we always find the staff do all they can to help - whether that is because they like or laugh at the strange Scotsman speaking Slovak with a skirt (kilt) on or because we are always polite - who knows.
Of all the hotels i have been in Slovakia this is my favourite - having been to the 5 star Kempinski with their staff looking down their noses at you and terrible customer service the Hotel Toliar beats it hands down
The Toliar restaurant has just been refurbished but i have to say it has lost its old Slovak ambience with the old wooden walls and skis and various Slovak folklore I first encountered 10 years ago on my first visit but the new look is fine for the modern masses - love the sheepskin rugs on all the seats, great addition - very comfortable and the food is lovely as usual - the self service breakfast with all you can eat is superbly presented with a massive selection for even the most fastidious of traveller.
Unfortunately the Vitalny Svet has gone downhill a bit having lost its ice cave
holes and it just feels a lot less atmosphere than it used to when you could look out the ice room through a window onto the mountains has been replaced by a balcony overlooking the rear car park but its still miles better than any of the other Vitalny Svet nearby. At 10 euros its not cheap but its worth it after a hard days walk to Popradske Pleso or Krivan I can tell you.
The rooms are basic it has to be said but as we are climbers we are only there to sleep but the bathrooms look like they were tiled by a blind monkey and the roomshad unique features - like a magazine propping up the wardrobe and tatty ripped curtains - the balcony had not been finished and had a danger sign not to open the door and the bedding whilst perfectly clean was old and tired. As a budget room it is fine but dont expect anything more. We have stayed over 7 times in the pat and our rooms were always adequate but this time it seems our 4 bed room didnt come up to spec - No idea why so maybe you should go for a 2 bed room.
The wifi in the hotel really is superb anywhere you go from restaurant , to our room or outside in the seating area at the front door which most people find essential these days.
The view is superb and as I say the receptionist and vitalny svet staff were lovely and very helpful so i think the problems are really only in the bar area!
For the price you get what you pay for but the bar staff issue, shabby rooms and unfinished balconies are quite dangerous and need looked at but we will be back regardless - the breakfast is worth the price alone.
- mortnn (2/5): What a pissy crowd.. - We were about 85 people staying here last weekend, to go hiking in the High Tatras. We have stayed here before, and the prices are fine, location is perfect, and the hotel itself is absolutely fine.
The first problem is the staff: I have never met an angrier and more pissy bartender than the one we met upon our arrival. We got yelled at and neglected fwhen trying to buy beer - excuse me for giving you my money!
Another problem was the food. We had booked the hotel about 3 months ago, but still they seemed surprised by our turning up, and didnt have enogh food for us at any time.
Lastly the beds were very bad, the pillow would have done a better job as a doormat...
Not going bck..
- bl4ze (10/5): Good restaurant : nice atmosphere - After some outing in the area we stumbled upon Toliar's restaurant, checked out and stayed. The atmosphere was really relaxed and inviting with the fireplace , service was quick and friendly. Our food was very good, drinks cold so what more can we ask for ? Prices are fair to the area so I can not complain. I would definitely return.
- Ania24 (6/5): Just a hotel - We only stayed in the hotel for 1 night. It is the 3 star hotel and nothing more, I would even say more that 2 star +. The room was ok, TV set- very old. Shower head in the shower did not work properly, no shower in the morning.... We had a dinner in the restaurant, I forgot to say that we are the clients of the hotel to get 10% discount and as the bill was already printed we did not get it. Not a problem but if you use the restaurant advise the waiter beforehand. Breakfast - very plain.
- 277katkak (10/5): Fantastic Hotel, great location, excellent staff - I visited this hotel three times already and it was still 100% satisfaction. Rooms cozy but not small. Clean, tidy. Location of the hotel is fantastic for those arriving by train rather than by car. Friendly staff, still smiled. Very friendly receptionist advised everything we needed. Very nice restaurant with great food, but I would prefer more happy staff in the restaurant . And what is amazing, they have no problem with pets. We stayed with two dogs and even they also enjoyed :) and last but not least, excellent spa.
Reception really the best. Nice and friendly lady who advised us all what we needed. Recommended where to go and especially what to wear :) We could not break her away from our dogs. In my first stay, had to give us even smaller bedroom as we booked, but then gave us discounts. Without our notice.
Sure, we did not have LCD TV in our room, but we did not care. We stayed in room only during night, because we spent whole day outside.
- chocta (6/5): good - Too pricey in comparison to offered standard but Strbske Pleso area seems over-the-top price wise in general. Breakfast was fine, modest. Restaurant food served at dinner was delicious. Close to tracking route, lake, skiing and situated very close to the train station. Quiet. Nothing special though and the interior's definitely not modern but it's clean. Old telly with very few channels which might be important when it's raining and u have nowhere else to go as there is not much going in the area. No night clubs - a possibility of entertainment during a gloomy weather could be a 'mini-spa' in the hotel or a luxury spa in the Kempinsky Hotel (did not try). A supermarket is situated on the ground floor of a Toliar Hotel.
