Guest Reviews
- John (10/5): Unbelievable historic Inn - This is one of the absolutely nicest places we have stayed at in a long time. If you love the charm of a historic Inn with a bonus of amazing dining this is the place to stay.
- Martina (8/5): - It was very quaint and charming. Excellent food. Friendly staff. Very clean. The only thing I didn’t like is that the toilets were very low. Not disability friendly. Be prepared to do stairs. Washington Room on the third floor. No grab bars in the shower. Was able to navigate although slowly up and down stairs. Keep in mind this is a very old Inn. That’s the charm but needs higher toilets and grab bars for safety
- CHARLES (10/5): - Staff extremely helpful and pleasant. Food was excellent
- Laurel (10/5): - Unique property. So much history in every room!
- Frank (2/5): - I didn't stay here because my phone lost the WIFI connection and I got lost trying to find the place. It was around 7 Pm when I called to say that I wouldn't be staying the night. It look like a nice and interesting place when I booked it. My plane had delays and I was tired. It was just a bad day for me. The rating didn't have the option of saying I didn't stay the night.
- Galina (10/5): - Al
- Debbie (10/5): - Nostalgic atmosphere! Delicious Food! Great Staff!
- Sheena (2/5): - Could not comment on much, as my room was double booked and I was out of luck for the night...still negotiating the refund.
- Nicholas (10/5): - Excellent place with a TON of history. Great for a quick overnight getaway if you live in NE OH.
- Theresa (10/5): - The place is beautiful and food is very good and upscale. Breakfast is included in the morning. The layout of room and dinning areas also gorgeous. Highly recommend for a quick getaway
- Kurt (10/5): - 2nd stay. Love this place.
- Bryan (10/5): - Spent my birthday at the inn and dined there. The inn is appointed beautifully and the room I stayed in was comfortable and quiet. The history that the inn reflects is amazing! I was greeted warmly when I arrived and the staff was very friendly. The dinner and breakfast were fabulous and the food delicious! Beef wellington for dinner with vegetable and mashed potatoes. A hearty breakfast was served the next morning along with a fruit plate and coffee. It was a treat for me to celebrate my special day at the inn and restaurant! Loved it all especially the gas lights in the eve and the lovely courtyard. Visiting the inn was certainly worth the trip!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Wonderful place for peace and quiet - I went here to relax, disconnect, and read. It was a wonderful experience and the staff were all very kind
- Sylvia (10/5): - We loved the historical aspect to this property - a multi-century home that was lovingly restored and which contains many personal mementos and portraits of the previous owners. It was like stepping back in time. The hamlet of Hanoverton, and small nearby town of Lisbon are perfect for evening walks along the historic homes. Very beautiful part of the world!
- Dawn (10/5): - I had the pleasure of staying in the historic Inn and enjoying both dinner and breakfast during my overnight booking. I stayed in the cozy Van Buren Room and found it perfect for a quiet, relaxing night’s sleep after a long day of travel. Do make sure to book a dinner reservation as the aroma wafting through my room made me realize that I did not want to miss out on the superb meal that I wound up enjoying so much. One of the finest meals that I have savored in a long, long time.
Every member on staff that I interacted with was so pleasant, helpful, knowledgeable and made me feel so welcome…Thank you all so much for making my stay so enjoyable.
- Mary (10/5): - This place is unique. The history is interesting and we definitely feel the Jefferson room ghost! I had the best steak of my life at dinner. Every member of the staff has been sweet and accommodating. Its a bit pricey, but worth it. They even left cookies in the room for us
- Breanna (10/5): - If you’re into historical dining and stay, this is it! We had the best dinner followed by the best accommodations. The bed in the Washington room was so comfy!!! We enjoyed looking at the old books around the room in the cozy sitting area.
- David (8/5): - The beds were really bad. Both my wife and I and our two friends had beds that were very uncomfortable because they caved in towards the middle. Had to sleep on the very outside edge of the bed. Otherwise, it is a fabulous place to stay and dine.
- Scott (4/5): - Need to spend $to make sure everything in the room is working
- Christine (10/5): - totally unique. love it. been there 20 times
- Lori (4/5): - Staff and food was very good . Our room had no hot water and most of the light bulbs were burned out and the creamer for for coffee for the room was very old, it was butter consistancy also we found this to be very unsafe that we were left there all night with no attendant there.
- Theresa (10/5): Outstanding stay - This place is a gem! Our dinner and complimentary (free, freshly cooked) breakfast were both amazing. The staff was beyond helpful, kind, and attentive, and we enjoyed all there was to see. So many details have gone into making the tavern and inn so interesting, as well as welcoming and comfortable. It was a great overnight getaway. We’ll be back!
- Jennifer (10/5): - This is our 3rd overnight stay at the Spread Eagle Tavern & Inn, but we’ve dined here about 10 times over the past 14 years or so. We always enjoy the service and ambiance. At least five fire fireplaces are spread throughout the dining area giving it a cozy and romantic feel. If you like history this is the place to be. Many political figures from over the past few centuries have visited here, and it was also a landing point for slaves traveling through the Underground Railroad. The food is excellent along with classy service. A true fine dining experience!
- Kathryn (4/5): - The atmosphere was lovely, although, we checked in at 3 and was told that we couldn't have a drink because the place was closed? They crammed us in a corner for dining and the waitresses came across as fake with the "my pleasure" and excuse my reach which happened about 15 times during our meal. We ordered dessert which took about 15 minutes to serve. Where was the owner? Why did we have to stay in our rooms until 5 and couldn't have a drink because the servers weren't old enough? If you are going to charge that much, then make your guests feel as special as you think you are.
- william (10/5): - totally unique piece of history. worth visiting and admiring
- Elizabeth (8/5): - -
- Robert (10/5): - Excellent
- Gina (8/5): - Lovely old establishment with a lot of "nooks and crannies" to investigate, taking you back to the 1800's way of life. Well worth the visit!
- Amanda (6/5): - The staff is very friendly however the staff disclosed that there have been reports of ghosts. There was also no staff overnight. Very steep and narrow steps so one must be in physically able to get to their room.
- tracy (10/5): - Great experience. I love the place and food. Just need to bring bikes very country but love it
- Jennifer (10/5): - .
- Tim (10/5): - The building is well maintained for its age, and very unique.
Our room had an above average bath and shower. Quality materials, and it was clean. Every seat in the dinning area was special . the hostesses and manager was very tuned into what people need.
- MIKE (10/5): - HOTEL STAFF AND FOOD WAS EXCELLENT
- JEFFREY (2/5): - They were closed! Drove 3.5 hours for nothing had to rent a hotel on another town. Expecting a full refund. Very unhappy
- MARTHA (10/5): - Beautiful and quiet
- Shana (10/5): - Beautiful building. Wish there had been more history of the property available. Loved the ambiance.
- Jeff (10/5): - Great place to stay
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Lovely historical inn and property. Staff attentive and friendly. Spacious room with period details. Interesting sights and reading materials located throughtout.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - What a unique and fun place to visit. The surrounding area has very limited amenities and no places close by to eat.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The food was the highlight. The old-fashioned charm of the Inn was second. The charm of the staff was third.
- Maureen (4/5): Disappointed! - An Incredible Piece of History- Unfortunately it was Tainted with Extremely Partisan Political Propoganda. A framed picture of a man swinging to punch a cardboard cutout of a woman is not funny or appropriate. I dont care who she is. Violence towards women is not funny! It was also the worst night sleep I've had in a while. The mattress was so uncomfortable I had to sleep at the bottom of the bed!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very unique place to eat and stay. Food was awesome.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This place is fantastic! The service and food are also amazing! We are already booked for another trip!
- Elizabeth (10/5): Wonderful Weekend Stop - What a quaint little place off the beaten path. The service was excellent and the food was superb! The building itself is a gem, with pieces of history scattered throughout. We will certainly be back!
- Sherry (6/5): - Staff were fantastic. Food was amazing. The room had no air conditioning. We opened a window but no screen. We were given fans but it was a rough night of sleeping. Otherwise enjoyed the stay
- Tom (10/5): - Been there several times for "special occasion" dinners and have always gone home happy. This was our first over night stay but will not be our last, we really enjoyed our room and the service that went with it. Great place.
- Ann/Doug (10/5): - Beautifully maintained historic tavern and Inn from 1837. Wonderful food for dinner and breakfast. We stayed in the George Washington room with two fireplaces. Across the hall was the Thomas Jefferson room with the door open. A despondent woman in the 1800s tied a rope around her neck and jumped out of the from window. Her ghost has been seen and heard but she didn’t bother us.
The staff is gracious and efficient. Original antiques everywhere. A house at the end of the block was on the underground railway.
History at every turn.
- Chris (10/5): - Great place to stay!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent historical property with a unique ambiance.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It waa amazing. Chocolate chip cookies in the room waiting for you! Really good ones too. The restaurant is also beyond amazing.
- Marc (10/5): Couples getaway - We stayed this past weekend for a family birthday. Everything from the elagant charm to the staff was unbelievable. Dinner was ao delicious, the bar was downstairs and every so quaint yet perfect. In the morning we were treated to breakfast, suberb. A must see place to stay, dine relax getaway and totally enjoy. We will most definitely be back.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Lovely Atmosphere. Great food. Staff very friendly and helpful. loved that breakfast was included with our reservation. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful. The woman who served us breakfast was very friendly and attentive.
Room was not well lit. We researched the inn and knew our room was the smallest and with the least amenities; but we were only there for an overnight stay. The bed was comfortable. One drawback, the TV did not work. Attempted several times to correct the problem with the instructions given in the room, but without success. Other than that, we still loved our stay at the Inn.
- Michael (10/5): - Amazing place! Food and service was fantastic!!!
- Sherrie (8/5): - The food, atmosphere, hospitality and service was beyond a 10. Our room at the inn was very small and very uncomfortable there were no rooms available to upgrade in so we cancelled our next evening stay and checked out. The management was very understanding of our concernen. We are planning to return, but booking a different room.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Fantastic inn, stayed in the smallest room there however. The 'VanBuren' room. Be advised, this was a fantastically clean room/bath, but no closet is in the room, pegs are installed on the wall for hanging items. Also, there is no chair in the room. Just a bed and a side table. Only choose this room if you are looking to sleep here only. Not a room comfortable to lounge in, but there are a couple common areas at the inn to lounge in. Staff was fantastic, the inn itself was totally unique and we will visit again, just choosing a larger room! We did peak at other guest rooms, and they were fabulous!
- Verified traveler (2/5): Don't expect your reservation to be honored - Booked a specific room. Was the whole point of going to this place. But when we got there, they said they had double booked that room and since the other people got there first, we were out of luck. They also mentioned that double booking is a very common occurrence here. They put us in a different room with a smaller bed on the second floor as opposed to the third. We could hear every foot step above us. Supposedly the room we were put in is more expensive so they gave us a "discount" so we'd only pay the price for our original room. Didn't really see this as a courtesy at all since the room they put us in was not what we wanted in any way whatsoever. I certainly will not waste my time or money at this place again. Not worth it.
