Ambience is so much more than what you get at a chain hotel ( not that I don’t enjoy a stay at the four season as well- it’s just not the right vibe for this island) . The local cat became our pet for a few nights which made us feel right at home. And the views and location were perfect. Great restaurant nearby and beach at Les tipaniers for water activities. Would highly recommend if wanting somewhere cozy and off the beaten path while still having some luxury.

- StardustCoversYou (6/5): Quaint - The hotel is old style vs a contemporary resort, meaning traditional thatched roof and walls. It also abounds with original art and statues. The downside for us was the hotel is rather isolated so you need a taxi or rental car to get anywhere. There is one restaurant that is walking distance but that’s it. The hotel offers very limited choices for breakfast (nothing is included in your room, not even a morning cup of coffee). They do not offer lunch or dinner. We only saw one other couple at the hotel, for a few minutes, the entire 6 days we were there. Maybe if you are a loner this would be a plus. Lastly, we did not appreciate dealing with the owner. Within hours of completing our booking we realized our flight arrived after the last ferry so we needed to alter our stay by one day. She would absolutely not honor our request so we had to pay the extra night.

- Tourist788237 (10/5): Highly recommended stay - This stay was truly amazing, the only thing I regret is that we were only there one night. The atmosphere cannot be captured in photos, but think boutique white lotus. We stayed in the princess Keona suite, which was impeccably furnished. I loved the attention to detail and the way the decor blended plants and the outdoors inside. We did not experience the mosquitoes, but my husband woke up early and opened the windows, and a friendly cat crawled in and curled up at my feet. The breakfast service was lovely, delivered right to our room. Afterwards, we enjoyed some snorkeling off the dock.

- nathalie (10/5): Oasis of peacefulness where nature and beauty surround us - Eileen the owner is amazing, very kind and very well organized and efficient. It was our first time in Moorea and we could not have picked a better place. The hotel is an oasis of zenitude , where nature and comfort, beauty and peacefulness mix perfectly. Our suite had a secret passage leading to our private little beach , it was heaven on earth! All the tours to visit the island can be organized by Eileen and there is a grocery store and a restaurant 5 minutes away, walking distance. We will never forget the welcoming staff and the amazing sanctuary that Fenua Mataioa is. Thank you Eileen and Anais for your kindness and maeva. Nothing

- Lorena (4/5): - They charge you $30 if you get earlier than check in time, just to be on the common areas that are empty. I have never seen this anywhere in the world. They only serve breakfast and there are no restaurants close by.

The shared spaces are comfortable and plentiful in case you want to socialize with other guests. I would recommend this hotel if you’re looking for a unique experience. The gardens are amazing.

- Michael (10/5): - What is unique about this hotel? It is not a party hotel. It is maybe one of the most beautiful and relaxing hotels I have ever stayed at. I am 70 and travel a lot and spend time in beautiful hotels in beautiful areas. The Fenua Mata'i'oa hotel tops my list. We stayed in the Garden Romantic Suite. A large place. There was a nice outside shaded place to have breakfast with kitchen exposed to the ambient environment, complete with a cat if you allowed it. The bedroom was large and very comfortable and air conditioned. I slept 8-9 hrs a night. The bathroom and tub were in a Shangr-La environment. We had our own beach area with several outdoor outdoor areas to sit and enjoy nature. Our room and every inch of the entire communal area have been immaculately and pain-stakenly decorated over 25 years. Everywhere you look you can't help but to be transfixed with the thoughtful cohesive beauty bestowed by the owner-designer. You may think I am getting carried away and over romanticizing the property but my girl friend felt exactly the same way. I was so nice to have a private dock where you can be picked up for an excursion or just to snorkel on your own or just have a drink and watch the spectacular sunsets. If you want a romantic place for inspiration, I can't think of a better place. Also, everything worked in our room and we only wished we had stayed a week instead of a few days.

- I4935PYdougb (10/5): Fond memories - So, a bit dated. But, I was just looking at 6 year old photos from our stay at Fenua Mataioa hôtel in 2/2019. While I have been fortunate to stay at some great hotels, in some memorable places, around the world; in hindsight sight, none surpasses the fondness I have for the lovely time spent at this lovely place. Thanks for the enduring wonderful memories! I need to plan a next visit.

Garden is beautiful you can see a lot of work from the owner to make it as it is. Welcome cocktail was appreciated. The room have a small kitchen outside, which was good It was great but I do feel for the price paid for the stay there could be more to offer like kayak could be offered free at least for an hour, some bikes to be available since it’s not close to many attractions and to keep it in the ecological concept, small electric stove for cooking added to the kitchen since no restaurant on site.

- mikell (10/5): - It’s very unique jungle book could have been written here me and the wife had a air b and b and it was terrible so we left it to here for 1 night and one night only arrived at 3 pm and left the next day at 9 am to the Hilton. It was a great spot for 1 night ! The rooms are a bit older and assuming since it’s in the jungle feeling in the trees along the ocean it’s very humid it had a bit of a musty smell but was still perfect for the night breakfast was for 2 meals in the am and 1 letre of coffee trout to took in am was around 5200 xpf food for breakfast was not bad at all Beacon eggs etc The steak place is just up the road you can go eat was great !! The best part of this place is 100% ocean morning view and or ocean view in general almost right across from the picnic island of Moorea , and not far down from coco beach, you can rent a kayaks or paddle boards and head down to both islands from here The water was very clean you can see everything too to bottom in the area tons of fish we had a good time for the night it’s a great place to transfer Nice people clean room for the most part but a bit musty we had the lowest end room they had for the night left. - Otavio (10/5): Waterfront manta rays - We stayed at the Princess Lokelani room. It was steps from the water. We saw a manta ray there and lots of fish. (Note that there is no actual beach as the whole island is enclosed by a coral reef). The hotel is very unique and has a stellar breakfast that they bring to your room. We loved the common area, it's very distinctive and comfortable. We borrowed canoes and found the manta and shark area ~10 mins away. There are boats and tours that travel from all over the island just to go there. The hotel is close to solid restaurants and has parking. Main drawback is mosquitos given the room is surround by greenery - come prepared.
- J1618TSjusting (10/5): Amazing beyond words! - My wife and I stayed here for our honeymoon, and this place was absolutely amazing! It is a truly unique and original place with a lot of soul. Everything looks like somebody with an artistic eye spent careful time on it, down to the smallest details. The staff were all extremely helpful and friendly. We stayed in the Prestige Overwater Suite, so we had a bungalow for our bedroom, a separate private bungalow for our bathroom, and the two are connected by a covered kitchen/seating area. What a cool experience it was to wake up in the morning, make some breakfast and coffee in our separate kitchen (you can also order breakfast from them if you want to), and then sit on the private deck and watch the sun rise. And of course, a drink on the deck as the sun sets was a must-do every evening as well. I will say that part of the "realness" of this resort is that nature has not been sterilized out of it, so there were mosquitos and geckos. It wasn't much of a problem for us, but if somebody was very sensitive about those sorts of things, they might have a bit of a hard time. There was also a cat that graced us with her presence periodically throughout each day, so we felt like we had a pet for our stay. We kind of miss the cat now.
- Lewis (8/5): - The perfect place if you're looking for peace and quiet, the sunbeds overlooking the ocean are unmatched. There's a local shop which has lots to offer for breakfast/lunch options and/or light teas. There's a couple of restaurants within a 10 minutes walk. Otherwise, a 30 minutes walk into town is needed, there's no pavement or streetlights but if you have a torch it will be fine (we did this numerous times and felt safe).

Only thing I would suggest to improve is to put a regular door for the toilet. Since everything is in the same room the curtain does not keep any smells out of the rest of the room.
- Karen (10/5): Exceptional - We love boutique hotels above all other travel accommodations and have stayed in them all over the world. This is THE BEST one EVER. So unique and beautiful and private and quiet. The decorations and gardens and overall ambiance of it all are a true labor of love and dedication to artistic expression. Can't say enough. Breakfast is available, and there is a great beach restaurant a few doors down for lunch. The kitchenette has a microwave, toaster, blender, egg cooker, coffee machine, water heater, refrigerator. The resident cats are very friendly!

- David (6/5): OK alternative to the big brand hotels - A well positioned boutique property. The rooms are all unique - good quality but quite “rustic”. The resort is right next to the water but also within quite a thick jungle area, so can get very humid with lots of mosquitoes. The stand out room by quite some way is the one right on the water. It may be worth paying the extra money, although note that it is partly open plan with no walls or AC throughout - it also leaked a bit in the rain. They charge you for the kayaks, which we thought was unnecessary given what they charge for the rooms. Note there is no restaurant so if you don’t have a car it is problematic getting to restaurants for lunch or dinner. They should have a happy hour to promote use of their bar but they don’t seem to care much about utilisation of that aspect of their business.

- Lindsay (10/5): - Walking into this hidden property is like walking into a dream. Every corner you turn is more beautiful than the last. We stayed in the over water suite with a gorgeous view of the lagoon and loved feeding the fish right off the deck. Very friendly cats visit daily to the open air sunroom. The sleeping area and can be completely closed off and does have air conditioning. The sunroom/kitchen bar is open air so it does not. Bathroom can be closed off but no ac in there either which wasn't an issue for us. Pack bug spray! The only complaint we had is that the bathroom has a pretty clear view to the other suite's sitting area. Made eye contact with neighbors a view times in the bathroom which was extremely awkward. There are a few bamboo shoots to kind of block the view but it's still a floor to ceiling window with no curtain to the shower or toilet. Other than that, it was an amazing room to stay for our honeymoon. Our room was cleaned daily with fresh towels, we received flower necklaces and welcome cocktails when we arrived, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Absolutely a hidden gem.
- Michele (10/5): Perfection in Paradise - Absolutely stunning. It is rare to find a place that is better than the pictures, but this is! Friendly, helpful staff throughout our stay. The grounds and view of the ocean are beyond words. Breakfast brought to your room including fresh tropical fruit selection is a perfect way to start the day. The steady rhythm of the waves on the edge of the barrier reef lulls you to sleep. Several species of fish congregate right next to the dock in crystal clear water.

Loved the beautiful views and water access. We also loved the rustic but elegant vibe of the decor. Every piece looked carefully chosen and fit perfectly. The bed and linens were amazing and comfortable. The waterfront bungalow we stayed in was well equipped for us to make breakfast and snacks. So peaceful!!! A slice of paradise.
- Casey (10/5): - We stayed in the suite on the water and it was gorgeous. We had a little trouble finding the place with Apple Maps so probably best to use google maps. We saw stingrays and sharks right off the deck. And the most beautiful colorful fish! You can rent kayaks and SUPs. The lady who gave us the tour of the property was so nice and helpful. Power went out on the island so we slept with the doors open but I feel like we got lucky with power going out since sleeping with the doors open you can hear the waves and it’s so peaceful. No bugs came in, just 2 of the sweetest cats. Startled me at first but once I realized it was a cat in the bed I was fine :) If you don’t want to stay in the water front suite the other suites looked just as nice and the deck for the hotel is amazing. We got there before check in and we were able to lay out on the deck and swim and snorkel. Such an amazing stay!!
- David (9/5): Hotel provided us with a more local experience in a beautiful lagoon setting. - Excellent breakfast delivered to our room. Locally made toiletries were very nice. Shower worked well. Abundant fish life off the deck of our suite plus sharks and rays seen at twilight. Eileen was very helpful in organising transport and a tour. Nearby Holy Steak House was very good for dinner and included a pick up service. Small supermarket within easy walking distance. No plug for the kitchen sink. The 3 rooms were separated by sets of sliding doors. Central room between bedroom and bathroom was partially open to outside which enabled mosquitoes to enter. Insect repellent recommended. Lighting in bathroom was minimal.
- Meghan (6/5): - Where to start....this is definitely a boutique hotel with limited rooms and interesting decor. Overall its beautifully decorated, but there was no separation for the bathroom or shower area. Not to mention there was a living wall IN the shower. It made it very difficult to take a shower. The whole hotel is built on raised floors which makes me wonder how creatures dont get in the rooms. The kitchen area is outside of the room which is unsanitary with stray cats and other animals around. This includes cups, dishes, utensils, microwave. There was also a language barrier with the employees which will make things difficult if you dont speak French. If you needed something it was hard to get help because either no one was around they didn't understand. There seemed to be a lack of customer service and willingness to help. Not to mention only certain employees could do certain duties which didnt help if you needed to check out, buy something, or ask for something. They only serve breakfast daily and you have to fill out what time you want it delivered the night before, but the time didnt seem to matter because it was delivered whenever it was ready. You will also need to rent a car or get a taxi everywhere you go since there are limited options nearby for food.

- Kimberly (10/5): Tropical oasis with excellent personal care. - This is such a wonderful property- the years of care and personal time invested by the owner and staff are evident in every turn. Location is so convenient, but when there you feel separated from the daily life of the island enterprises. It’s a little slice of heaven on Moorea. The grounds of the hotel itself are fascinating and overflowing with tropical trees and flowers and statuary. The cats are so friendly and make it feel like home (but we love animals). The entire staff want nothing more than for you to relax and enjoy and will go out of their way to assist you with anything they can. They were all so nice and helpful and pleasant. We ordered breakfast each night and it was delivered promptly the next morning and was delicious every day. We were out exploring or doing activities most days so weren’t there much during the daytime. We had a couple nice dinners out and had delivery from Holy Moly Steakhouse one night when we wanted to stay in. So several choices for dining options in your suite or nearby depending on your schedule and preferences. We had a rental car from Avis that we picked up at the ferry port in Moorea and dropped off at the airport in Moorea which I would recommend to make it easier to get around. It was very easy to navigate around the island. But several of the restaurants and activity coordinators will gladly pick you up and drop you off at the hotel if you don’t want a car. It was a very safe location and we had a mixed crowd of guests during our stay. Solo female travelers, couples with very small children, mixed generational families (grandparents, parents, older children, etc), and some couples either honeymooning or vacationing. It was a nice mix and everyone just kind of did their own thing. It never felt crowded or too full. It was perfect. Nothing at all- it was a favorite of our trip and we would definitely return.
- Michelle (10/5): Spectacular snorkeling with authentic flair - French Polynesia is expensive and this boutique hotel was not only an amazing snorkel location but also charming and authentic. Large enough for me, my hubs and parents to share and the team there was so helpful. But be aware if you go to the area during off season, some restaurants are closed the early part of the week and grocery store has limited hours. So plan accordingly! But the snorkel was stellar, the only better snorkeling we saw was way out by the reef on a small boat in Bora Bora.

We were also able to use the kayaks to paddle out to the motu which was a great experience. I would recommend staying at Hôtel Fenua Mata'i'oa
- Deanna (10/5): - This place was fantastic. We arrived very early before check in but the receptionist checked us in and made it very easy for us. We were allowed the run of the place until our room was ready. We received a beautiful fresh flower lei and a very tasty welcome drink. There are many different common rooms to relax in and feel very private. Our room was absolutely beautiful and just like the pictures portrayed online. We had our own private deck which was great to sit out on and watch the fish and the waves crashing on the reef. It was a very peaceful, calm and quiet stay which we needed after a long cruise. Everyone there made us feel special including Eileen, Anaise especially. Also the young man who helped with our very heavy luggage. I would return to this place again if/when we ever come back. We fell in love with this beautiful place.

It will sink into you as you spend time exploring this very special place. Not known for it's food-(no restaurant onsite), busy bar etc.-but SPECIAL And the beds are amazing!!!! Breakfast delivered to your room-wonderful staff Off the beaten path-great ocean view cafe 3 minutes walk This is the place if you truly want to relax and unwind.

Eileen is an absolute delight and all the staff are friendly and enthusiastic. It is the mist extraordinary hotel and we really loved every minute of our time there. If we were to return to French Polynesia I wouldn’t even think about looking anywhere else. I hope so much that we get to return soon. Thank you so much for sharing your hotel with us Eileen.
- Cory (10/5): Magic and Passion in this jungle bungalow on the sea! - Magical property, but don't tell anyone about it! It is a amazing secret. This property is a labor of love and passion as you will see in displayed in the plants and artwork. Every nook and cranny is thought of. Snorkel/surf directly out of this lagoon. What not to expect: No poolside shennanigans and nothing moves quickly. Schedule resteraunts and taxi's before you leave!!! If you wait, "it will not be possible". Rather, plan ahead. Beds are best we have had in our travels. It's tropical, so bugs are a thing, just know that. Eileen will handle your every need. This has nothing to do with the resort, just a culture of the island...resources such as taxis or resteraunt availability, is VERY limited. All of the taxis, all of them, may be at the ferry dock and not operating near you unless you have pre-arranged. You order dinner for delivery no later then 3pm, if you want to eat at 7pm. Waiting to decide where you eat, means you will not eat.

- Suzanne (8/5): - What a unique and eclectic property! Very tropical feeling and they have tons of lounge chairs and couches everywhere to chill. They have a super friendly kitty who visited often and I fell in love with. The negatives were the main receptionist spoke almost zero English, and they were doing construction right next to our suite- I complained but it continued on and off. Although we were out and about most days, one afternoon we wanted to chill within the outdoor area of our suite, but it was too noisy. I complained but all they conveyed (in French) was “20 more minutes” which turned out to be over an hour. At least they could’ve offered a free breakfast or bottle of wine to compensate. Ah well…we still enjoyed it there. If you’re looking for a more resort experience with pools and restaurants, this isn’t the place. But if you want a quiet (sans construction) and chill experience, this is a nice place.
- Bjorn (10/5): - The hotel was very comfortable, unusual and eclectic in a jungle like setting. Each lodging had a kitchenette and eating area. There were several living rooms in the hotel with original decorations. A pick up service was available to eat at a good nearby restaurant. The owner was charming and helpful. I would recommend this hotel.

- Naveed (10/5): - Photos do not do it justice! It has very spacious & multiple lounge areas both indoor & outdoors. The dock allows for people to go into ocean with many various species of fish, sting rays, etc. Also the dock allowed the boat tour to bring us directly back to the hotel. The furniture & art is unique, hand selected and creative. I can not express how incredible the ambiance was. The room was a junior suite with patio bar, table , microwave and 2 fridges. Bathroom was spacious with lovely shower heads. King bed was incredibly comfortable , something that I find not always the case. The service was excellent & friendly. They were helpful to book tours and taxis for us. We stayed 4 nights and wish we stayed longer. Will definitely come again!
- Jeunel (10/5): Perfect spot in paradise - We're so glad we chose to stay here - it's such a beautiful and peaceful place. The location is quiet and private, but just a short walk or drive to restaurants and nearby places to explore. There's a grocery store just up on the main road that is well stocked with food supplies and drinks. We found marinated fish and sushi in the food cabinet, which made an ideal ready-made meal to enjoy in our room. For anyone that wants to see tropical fish but doesn't want to snorkel, this is the place - and for anyone that does like to snorkel, this is the place. We loved being able to sit on the deck and watch fish of all colours and sizes swim around our feet. As well as a variety of smaller fish, we saw manta rays during the day then eagle rays and [friendly/timid] reef sharks at night. The resident cat politely ignored us until we decided to make friends, after which it was lovely to have him join us one evening for a spot of fish watching. The deck was so relaxing and peaceful we could have happily spent our entire stay there. The bed was very comfortable, the room was spacious and spotlessly clean. The air-conditioning and wi-fi worked well. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Would love to go back.

The lagoon was perfect for snorkelling - so many fish and sharks and sting rays come down at night. Kayaks/paddle boards available to use to get out to snorkel at different places in the lagoon. Also kitchen area for basic cooking was useful. Would love to come back!!

- Marlene (10/5): - Our stay on Mo'orea was magical in a big part as a result of Hotel Fenua Mata'i'oa. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcomed, wanted, and cared for. A tremendous amount of thought went into the layout of the grounds, sitting areas, and rooms. Hotel Fenua Mata'i'oa seems to have been designed by someone with an eye for design, comfort, uniqueness, and romance. Our stay was nothing short of enchanting.
- Kat (10/5): - My wife and I nearly cried on the day we had to leave this beautiful hotel. It was one of the most spectacular properties either and I had ever been to, and we felt so beautifully cared for by the staff, particularly the owner, Eileen. From the arrival with flower leis and a luscious cocktail, to the property which is entirely surrounded by vivid turquoise water, to our spectacular bedroom with a bath/shower surrounded by plants and a private beach, we never wanted to leave the property, and only did for a few tours. Other than that, why would you want to be anywhere else but with that view! We also had massages at the property that were fantastic. Every detail was cared for and beautiful. We’ve had a truly remarkable trip in FP but Hotel Fenoa Mata’i’oa is the place we most deeply want to return to.
- Kenneth (10/5): - This is a most excellent Boutique Hotel. It is not glitz and Glamour, but it is Authentic Polynesian with a Very Nice touch of class everywhere you look. The grounds are incredible. The Common areas are mainly unused but so beautiful. Eileen and her staff are magnificent. I highly recommend the Prestige Lolakalani Suite with your own over the water private dock.
- jeffrey (10/5): - Hotel is challenging to find with a rental car. Very small signage, looks like you turning down a driveway. Once you pass this challenge, you are in for a nice surprise. You enter the property through a path with tall foilage all-around. The property and room have character and are charming. The pillows are firm.
- RobV987 (10/5): Romantic and original local hotel on the lagoon - We stayed for 4 nights to kick off our 25th anniversary trip and this was the perfect spot in Moorea! Beautiful gardens and decor, with a long deck alongside the lagoon. Each room is super original, we stayed in one that was set back from the water but still had a private beach and garden area. Very quiet and peaceful. Kayaks, snorkel gear and SUPs are extra charge. We wished we had rented a car for Moorea. There's a well stocked store nearby on the main road. No problem booking through hotels.com.

- OliviahE12 (10/5): Perfect spot in Moorea - If you want to snorkel on your own, this resort is ideal. You can rent a kayak directly from the front desk and take it out all day long, getting out anywhere you want in the shallow lagoon to snorkel. I recommend you bring your own snorkel equipment (which I always do when I travel). Use toothpaste to keep your mask defogged, and enjoy this great location! All of the snorkel tours come to the area of this hotel, so most people pay to snorkel there with a guide. Also, yes, the island has a lot of mosquitos, and there are a lot of mosquitos at this resort. I use natural essential oil spray that works great and keep it in my purse literally everywhere I go. Do this, and you can keep the bites down to a minimum. As an alternative, most shops in Tahiti and Moorea carry their own natural mosquito repellant using a specific plant oil that the mosquitos hate. So if you don't bring your own I recommend buying it. Also, this resort is close enough to food and a small market for supplies. Casa Vinzeno definitely has (by far) the best food in the area; make a reservation online the day before. Also, Holy Steak House is nearby, and it has a nice ambiance and food. Lastly, I loved the beautiful and homey decor at this place. From the pond, to the plant canopies, to the outdoor kitchen, to the shared living area full of seating and lounge spots- it was all so great!
