- KEITH (6/5): - Excellent staff A bit shabby but cheap

- Bartle (8/5): Ox Hotel - Definitely value for money.
Great for an overnight stay Some breakfast items were missing IE for the tea and cereal and no fruit juice
- Nicholas (8/5): - The hotel looks tired on the outside, but inside it is lovely. Mix up with the booking. I booked 2 rooms for 21st. However the hotel had it as one room for 2 nights, 20th and 21st, which wasn't correct, and contrary to my booking.com confirmations.
- Nicholas (8/5): - The hotel was good. It looks a little tired from the outside, but inside it is lovely There was a mix up with the booking. I booked 2 single rooms for 21st, but for some reason the hotel had it as 20th and 21st, one room each night, which wasn't correct.. my friend had to book an available room on our arrival.
- Rosemary (4/5): Just fine - Location Safe
- Andrew (5/5): would not stay again - location was ok very tired
- Richard (6/5): -
- Fenwick (7/5): - Nice and quiet on nightime Renovation work been done on a weekend, most annoying
- Brenda (3/5): Needed painting, shower was very old yellowing. Shower head paintwork was dirty Ed’s were clean and comfortable - Very dated Shower was very old yellow shower head

- Aaron (3/5): - The price. No pool, no breakfast even though i paid for it. No extra bedding. No warning about work happening in the next room early in the morning. Beds spring sticking up in the mattress. Hot pipes at the head of the bed so i had to move the bed in the night as it was far too hot. Shower soap dispenser empty.
- Rab (8/5): - Large room Bed was uncomfortable
- Nangle (7/5): .a good base for discovering Carlisle and Hadrians Wall - The bedroom was comfortable, and there was a well equipped gym, The breakfast was buffet one day, and to order on the other day. Both options were fine. The bar was open every night, and had a good selection. It was about 15-20 minutes walk to the centre of town The shower in our room was warm enough but not very powerful. It would have been nice to have a lift to get to our room on the second floor, as we had two heavy cases, although the staff carried one of the upstairs, which was very helpful. Overall, the hotel was looking in need of a bit of TLC
- emanuel (5/5): -
- Mark_Crompton (2/5): Free bresjfast just walk in. - Nothing Breakfast was bad. Nobody checked if we had paid for it. Lack of staff and lots of mess and food missing on the counter. No plates etc Hot oily food. Greasy.
- Gary (8/5): Comfy -
- Nicola b (6/5): Great for a short stay good price exceeded my expectations you will be pleasantly surprised - This was a pleasant hotel very basic however great price good safe location
Very impressed with facilities
Desk desk where all very helpful and friendly
I was kindly given an upgrade which was gratefully received
Bedding was extremely clean surpassingly pleasant visit thank you
Perfect for a short stay No food facilities rooms where extremely hot
- Helen (8/5): Good value for the money - My room was spacious, comfortable and with a very large and comfortable bed. There was plenty of hot water and the bathroom was spotless. Staff were helpful, polite and really elevated the experience. The communal areas leave a lot to be desired - the outside is very dated and dirty and the carpets and entryways are ready for refreshment.
- THEVENON Patricia (6/5): -
- Michele (7/5): -
- Rob (7/5): -
- Andy (3/5): Wouldn’t take much effort to make some improvements, but that is not their priority. - Nice and quiet. The wall mounted soap dispenser and the shower gel dispenser were both empty. Literally the first time I’ve ever been to a hotel that does not provide basic shampoo or soap. The furniture is so shabby, it could be replaced for less than £10 from a charity shop and that would be an improvement.
- Clare (10/5): - Brilliant
- Mondey (8/5): - Reasonable price with good breakfast, upgraded room. Clean and tidy if a bit old fashioned. Popular with tradesmen.
- Neil (8/5): -
- David (8/5): Fantastic location, welcoming - with clean comfy rooms and - Breakfast was great Room was near the extractor fans I think so I could hear them but didn’t disturb my sleep - room 234. Restaurant was not taking any more orders at 8.10 which was disappointing- but the Kirk of the Lochs just up the road was excellent!
- NICK (8/5): 2 night trip female Solo traveller - Location. Free parking. Very comfortable bed. Quiet and slept very well. Emma on reception was extreemly helpful in trying to resolve an issue. Which was dealt with professionalism and she was supportive and solution focused. Bathroom facilities were good. The gym was a welcome addition. The breakfast was lovely, freshly prepared and topped up frequently. Would definatly return. The reception is staffed 24/7. Hotel despite being full was quiet and peaceful. Fantastic location and access to Carlise. High powered EV chargers are located on the same road which is fantastic for those with electric cars. The bedroom walls could do with a repaint.
- Laudrenn (5/5): Bien pour une nuit pas plus, propreté à revoir .. - Personnel sympathique, lit queen size, parking Pression de l’eau très faible, matelas plein de taches, joints salle de bain très sales
- Martin (7/5): -
- Steven (1/5): OK hotel, scummy staff... - It's cheap, convenient and reasonably comfortable I've no idea where they get the staff from. Rude to the point of abusive and clearly couldn't understand why I didn't want them taking copies of my personal data.
- Aaron (3/5): - Staff No pool
- Pete (3/5): Awful beds, dated decor, avoid. - The staff were accommodating……. That’s about it It would be nice to have some mattress with the springs digging into your back at night. Very dated. Car park may as well be the surface of the moon. Doesn’t look very inviting in person. Photos on here are very misleading.
- Paul (7/5): -
- STUART (8/5): -
- Jennifer (5/5): OK for an en route stop over. Would probably not stay again. - Bed was old and worn out
- Lena (5/5): -
- John (7/5): -
- Sean (5/5): - I'm not sure to be honest.. but if you looking for a place to get the head down after long day then it is what it is. I got "Upgraded" to the deluxe king .. but it wasn't actually a king size bed it was two single beds pushed together.. so I could actually start fish .. because the was a big lump where the two mattresses met.
The shower was poor the water pressure was low and when I went you adjust the height of the shower head the shower head holder came apart.
- Ian Lambert (7/5): -
- ester (6/5): -
- jardine (8/5): -
- Frank (5/5): Adequate - Desolate setting
Hotel quite deserted
Few staff See above

- Diana (6/5): -
- Dainis (10/5): -
- Charles (6/5): -
- Hefin (6/5): Overall, it was fine to put your head down for a sleep and was clean. - location was good and value was good. It was a need to rest for the night and that is entirely what it was. The member of staff that greeted us was friendly and helpful It was quite dated and in need of some repair in places. The room was a little cold, but when walking through the corridor it had the feel like the heating was on in part of the hall but not where we stayed. Bed in a twin room was very squeaky every time you moved.
- Amanda (10/5): -
- james (4/5): - Peaceful nights sleep. Bar - lounge area basic.
- Otosi (7/5): -
- Justin (1/5): Awful. - Nothing Had to move a bedside cabinet to get in the room, no WiFi, cold shower, very poor and definitely not comfortable or worth £86.00!
- Katie (6/5): Stay somewhere else if there is room - Evening staff friendly the is pool table Very ool and dated photos are nothing like the property. Bed lumpy. Can't get extra pillows. No resturant for evening food. No gluten free breakfast option breakfast very iffy and slow only 1 item at a time. Carpets held together with gaffa tape room fixtures old and stained. Looks like a hostel not a hotel
- Chris (7/5): - Good price for what I needed. Not necessarily a criticism of the hotel it' just seems a bit forgotten these days. It's my home city and was on a family visit. Hilltop used to be really popular back in day. Maybe just a sign of the times.
- Julia (8/5): We would stay here again and recommend. Good value for money. - We really enjoyed our stay here, Dee & Shaneice are hard working and are very friendly & welcoming front of house , ensuring we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay.
Also all the other staff we chatted to including the house maids, and maintenance were just as kind and helpful. Thank you! From laurance & Julia
- Anthony (8/5): No frills, no fuss, friendly staff - just what I was looking for. - I was looking for a basic hotel for a very short stay whilst I visited the city. The hotel provided everything I was expecting and was looking for. No frills, no fuss. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Nothing.
- Mchugh (8/5): - The staff were great so friendly from reception to cleaners lovely people defo stay again It was just outdated apart from that place was great
- Dominik (10/5): -
- Rachel (5/5): Great staff, grave room - Staff very attentive and helpful The room was incredibly tired and smelled fusty.
The front of the hotel and its grounds were in need of a significant facelift
- Ijilade (7/5): -
- John (9/5): -
- jardine (8/5): -
- Staszek (10/5): -
- Douglas (6/5): - Not the best in Carlisle but the best value for money Very dated
- Anthony John (5/5): Room was clean everything else rubbish, the staff we’re good though what a dump - not much it was run down the outside was horrible, it was understaffed the lovely lass on reception also served behind the bar and cleaned tables and cleared away at breakfast, we had to wait 20 mins to get any breakfast.
- Agnes (8/5): Loved it especially for the price and it has easy access to the town for restaurants, pubs and shops - Easy access to bus stop Clean beds, bathrooms. Good bar prices
- Wendy (7/5): Cheap and cheerful - It's cheap and cheerful; and breakfast was great, not a lot on show but replenished with fresh stuff regularly The gardens were overgrown and untidy
- Wouter en Marianne (6/5): Was qua prijs prima met wat je kreeg. - De plek en de kamer. Hotel is behoorlijk vervallen, beetje desolaat. Foto’s op de site van Booking komen niet in de buurt van de werkelijkheid.
- Neatherway (5/5): Needs work - Location and friendly staff No pressure in the shower, one of the mattresses had broken springs (had to turn it over to be able to use it, and this was an upgrade room.. Much of the hotel remains to be upgraded, the restaurant was closed and the, £8 breakfast was poor quality.
- Nick (5/5): 'The Ox' - cheap and passable ! - I was travelling for work and this was the closest hotel - I knew it wasn't 'The Ritz' but it suited my needs. The staff on reception were polite & friendly. The room was clean, the bed comfy and the bathroom pristine. The place is a bit tired The shower looked good - the water was hot but the water pressure was poor - disappointing. No lamps or smaller lights in the room, which was a shame.
- Bev (8/5): -
- Guest (8/5): -
- Terry (8/5): Cheap and cheerful, excellent value for money - Cheap breakfast was okay included got it a bit cheaper. The property from outside looks like something from Bangladesh, that said what do you want for £52 including breakfast 4×3 people
If you’re looking for some more close to town, Clean, but breakfast included and cheap. If I were marking it based on that it’ll be a five star.
Just be aware, you’re paying for a very budget hotel, that should be pretty obvious with the price. Overall staff were great bar was open until 12 pm.
There was no food being served, but there was breakfast done in the morning.
- Craig (9/5): - Clean and comfortable
- Dean (9/5): - I just like it there Some room have good taste some dont
- Dean (9/5): - Ok Ok
- Dean (8/5): - Ok Ok
- Kenneth (7/5): - Good value for money and nice staff The beds are knackered.
- GARETH JOHN (7/5): GOOD - UPGRADE NOTHING
- Linda (10/5): Comfy, clean and quiet - Ideal location Would have been nice to have a hair dryer
- Deborah (8/5): A regular place of ours cant be beaten on prices normally - Breakfast very good value for money and all you can eat buffet..manageress is a lovely lady I prefer the standard rooms not the new upgraded room 51..theres no bedside lamps a harsh ceiling light instead .no bath.no surfaces to put things on.
- Rob (3/5): - There wasn’t much to like , On arrival the staff informed me we had been upgraded to a deluxe room !!!!!
It was very small ,no bedside lamps , very uncomfortable bed ( two single beds , strapped together) , 1 small bedside table no chair and nothing to put your clothes on , the rest of the hotel was shabby , broken windows that had been boarded up etc , wouldn’t recommend to anyone
- Burke (8/5): -
- Zsuzsanna (9/5): - That was my second stay in the hotel. It's good value for money People in the room next to ours were very loud late at night and early morning but the receptionist dealt with them professionally
- Sheri (7/5): Budget hotel staff so nice but in need of TLC - Staff were so friendly and polite and they make this hotel, location and parking were both good for what I needed it was ok for a budget hotel its such a shame as this place could be so much more they have a gym, bar but so in need of updating even with a little paint and updating but not sure the owners are interested.
- Guest (8/5): -
- linda (7/5): Good value basic hotel - Ideal for a work overnight stay as good value
Room was clean
- JOHN (1/5): - Nothing Bed was atricious big hollow bump in middle. The shower was also very poor.the whole hotel is not clean.i was told i was upgraded to a king size bed. It was 2 single beds shoved together with a king size sagging mattress
- Angela (7/5): - The hotel is good value for money. You cant really moan about much when the cost is so cheap. The receptionists were friendly and helpful. Free parking is a bonus. The room was cold, I asked at reception if the heating was going on, but she said no, very kindly she found me a heater for the room, it was terribly effective, but better than nothing.
- Jane (5/5): Jane - The staff were exceptionally helpful and polite. Overstretched as receptionist also doubled as barmaid, helped in clearing plates in the dining room. Hotel very tired. In drastic need of an upgrade . No bedside lights in my room even though it was an upgrade to what I'd booked. There was only one hair dryer in the whole hotel which had to be returned to reception straight after use. The lift was out of order which was difficult for disabled people. All the paintwork in need of redoing. My bathroom door was coming apart at the bottom. The breakfast was excellent. The young chef made beautiful eggs. Sadly no fresh fruit or yoghurt, croissants or other pastries. Hotel commands a good position overlooking shrubland with footpath walk nearby.
- Amber (8/5): -
- Shaun (8/5): It was fine and an improvement on last time. - I have stayed in this hotel before, when I stayed on Saturday night I thought there was a marked improvement from the last time I stayed, shower was better and more powerful, etc.
- Norrie Boag (7/5): - Really basic hotel but clean and got decent night sleep unlike some other local cheap establishments where the fire alarm goes off at 3am due to someone vaping Room wee bit cold
- John (8/5): A good budget overnight stay. Very helpful and friendly staff - Basic, clean and excellent value
- Mark (7/5): -
