Guest Reviews
- Duncan (10/5): Beautiful Birnam - A very historic hotel recently refurbished for tourist trade. Clean and spacious bedroom with large en-suite well supplied with handles and anti-slip mat. Very comfortable double bed and also single in room with plenty room to spare. Pretty side view over gardens towards River Tay and hills. Excellent friendly service at reception and breakfast and they were quite happy to let me use wi-fi in lounge area after technical check-out time. Would definitely recommend for those on a budget and older travellers who will appreciate the magnificent building. And very handy for the station.
- kenneth (6/5): Average hotel - Okay hotel. Nice and clean
- Sarah (10/5): - Property was nice with aging character. Very comfortable and near the train station. Several nature sights that were walkable and also Dunkeld nearby. Helpful and friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Big rooms, very warm at night, terrible shower.
- Jill (8/5): - The hotel was a bit dated but that didn't detract from our stay. Staff were friendly, breakfast was excellent, plenty of hot water for a bath.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Needs some love - Staff great, good breakfast and the bed was clean.
Room not clean, much dust and actual cobwebs in corners. Some of the Decor throughout the hotel tacky and unnecessary. The shower was a disgrace with mould. This is a beautiful building that needs to be loved, owners may need to take a walk through and have a good look at what could be done to improve without spending much money. The bar associated with the hotel is not in the same building.
- Graeme (10/5): Birnam - Very friendly staff
- Donald (8/5): - Very helpfull staff, great location to walk into dunkled, comfortable bed
- Donald (10/5): - Great hotel clean well presented
Very good breakfast
Will use hotel again
- Mark (6/5): Nice hotel, plumbing might need fixing - The stay was absolutely grand up until a large leak in the corridor ceiling outside my room in the middle of the night. This created some hassle understandably. The dripping into buckets through the night made sleep quite difficult. Other than that, its an old building so makes noises naturally but this isnt too much of an issue
- Joan (8/5): - Warm welcome. Clean comfortable room, a bit dated, could do with decorating, however did not detract from a comfortable stay
- Angela (10/5): Cosy, simple 3 star B and B feel. - Have stayed before. Simple 3 star - homley feel, not grand but a great budget saver and lovely 10 minute walk from central Dunkeld and river. Lots of amenities near by.
- Jacqueline (8/5): Overall good stay - It was good room, 3 beds, overall very good, breakfast fab. Shower not very powerful maybe because we were on top floor
- Jean (10/5): - Staff was very welcoming .
Hotel has lots of character.
- Doherty (10/5): - Easy walk to all amenities very nice breakfast no slip mat's in shower
- Christine (10/5): - Lovely old building, rooms very roomy! Breakfast enormous and delicious! A hairdryer would have been great though! Staff friendly and obliging! Thank you for a first lovely night in Scotland!
- Deborah (10/5): - Lovely old character building. Like walikng back in time. Little creaky, but what do you expect? No bar or evening restaurant, but plenty of local facilities to accommodate. Would definitely recommend and return.
- Loralyn (8/5): - Lots of character, beautiful high ceilings and large rooms.
- Sarah (8/5): - We had a comfortable stay, it’s an old building and that is it’s charm. The staff was very helpful. The restaurant next door was also great.
- Kathryn (8/5): - Beautiful character, quiet. Pleasant outside walking track.
- Kimberley (8/5): - Lovely hotel with some original features. Lovely location, friendly staff
- Carley (10/5): - Excellent location, lovely friendly staff. Good size rooms, very clean, charming lift! Breakfast was lovely.
- James (6/5): Good value. - The hotel is visually impressive enough, but tired in various respects. Unfortunately, the key the key would not open the door to the first room we were allocated so we ended up in a smaller room nearby. Breakfast was substantial and very good and the food in the adjoining Birnam Inn was excellent. Overall probably quite good value for our 2 night stay.
- William (10/5): Our stay - Great stay, friendly cooperative staff
- Verified traveler (8/5): Perthshire business stay - Did the job, comfortable bed, decent shower and good location for a conference at Birman arts. Nice walks to normal oak right behind hotel
- Verified traveler (8/5): Excellent value - We had a brief overnight stay to attend a local wedding. The hotel was convenient had old Scottish charm & the beds were clean & comfortable. The decor is a bit dated but to be fair it didn’t matter as it was excellent value for money. We didn’t book breakfast as had an quick departure but they looked hearty.
- Kevin (6/5): Disappointing stay - Accomodatipn was ok but desperately needs updating to the present day. Bad repair on bathroom door which did not lock, paintwork drab, screw sticking out dangerously on curtain tieback and bare walls all add up to a 1980's throwback.
Its a shame as the outside and main lobby are really nice but doesn't make up for the disappointing accomodation. Breakfast was ok but nothing special.
- Martin (8/5): - Just a one night stay, but would definitely come back again staff very friendly and helpful
- Connie (2/5): - Booked Monday and Tuesday - kitchen and bar closed - no food or drink. Returned on Tuesday afternoon. No housekeeping. Beds not made, towels not replaced and bin not emptied. Only saw one member of staff at any one time. Totally run down hotel!
- Jason (10/5): - Staff was extremely helpful
- sheena (10/5): - Great time
- Steve (10/5): - This was just a 'stop over' for me en route.
Now I wish it had been my 'destination'.
Very comfortable and well fitted rooms yet
embracing the 'old world charm' that I love
when I visit castle hotels.
Wish I had had more time.
Thanks.
- Brian (10/5): - Could not fault but am hotel it was just fabulous the hotel itself was excellent the food very good the staff very friendly the room excellent will def go back
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location, basic hotel. - Good location in a lovely area. Room was basic and a little tired, but clean. The bed was comfortable, but just a basic double. It was difficult to reach the bath taps because the basin prevented the glass shower screen from being moved. No shower gel or shampoo provided, which I found a little mean for £90 per night B&B. The few staff (one person to handle reception and serve at the bar and restaurant) were friendly and helpful. Food was unexciting but reasonably priced, apart from several supplements on the breakfast menu.
- John (6/5): Find another hotel - Terrible food, beer was bad and had to send it back. We did not get what we ordered. Basically everything is cooked from frozen probably bought out of a discount store
- Douglas (10/5): Enjoyed our stay - We enjoyed our stay . It was during the virus and an almost lockdown conditions, so the hotel was very quiet , but very safe . We would like to return under normal circumstances .
The hotel has plenty of character, which we love .
- Marion (8/5): - Warm, clean and comfortable on a cold, rainy evening. Lovely dinner in the Inn, prepared and served by friendly, pleasant staff.
Disappointed that the bar wasn't open, though, to serve a nightcap drink at 10.00pm!
- Clare (2/5): - The bed was so uncomfortable we both woke with a sore back and the pillows were as flat as pancakes. Food was ok but hotel is very run down
And stuck in the past decor and food.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The entrance and dining room were nice, but once you went upstairs, the carpets were frayed and the place was tatty.
Breakfast was good.
- David (10/5): Overnight stay attending Blair Athol horse trials. - The hotel was in a small village just off A9, access was easy, the staff were very helpful and informative and in line with current covid 19 rules. Food was really good and hot when served, reasonably priced as well. The hotel was clean, tidy, some elements of the decor were dated however this added to the characteristics of the building. The room was spacious clean and tidy as was the bathroom. There are elements that require attention to detail, carpets were frayed and ceiling showed areas of past water ingress, lighting could be improved.
- Kenneth (10/5): - Friendly check in staff as were the young team in the bar and restaurant.
- Karen (8/5): - Lovely comfortable hotel. We enjoyed our stay.
- Anne Marie (10/5): A gem near Dunkeld - The hotel is an old building but the room was immaculate, bright and comfortable. We had a small double and a single bed in the room, with plenty of storage. The bathroom was modern with a shower above the bath and everything was spotless.
The hotel is “old-world” but we liked it with its original(?) lift , its grand staircase and spacious rooms. Breakfast was good with the usual cereal choices, plus yogurt, fruits, etc. The main part of breakfast had more than the ‘full Scottish’ , including things like kippers. I had smoked haddock and poached egg with a creamy sauce - delicious!
Staff were helpful and courteous. We only had time for one night but we’d definitely go back.
It’s also very handy for Dunkeld (10mins walk) and for loads of lovely walks - we did 3 of them.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Stunning looking hotel a bit tiered inside but they don’t build them like this anymore
Breakfast was really good
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I thought it was a lovely hotel. The rooms were clean and tidy. And 5 minutes walk to The center of Dunkeld.
- Victor (6/5): There's no catch, it is very affordable - If you want to stay in a gothic Perthshire mansion with a blue plaque, this is the cheapest way to do it. Go, before it trebles in price.
- Karl (6/5): - Hotel was clean and tidy breakfast took an age,not enough outdoor seating for food.
- Walter (8/5): Good hotel in great location - Last minute booking, cheap, clean hotel. Good breakfast, didn't have dinner, but the menu choices and pricing looked good.
Room was clean and tidy.
Short stroll into Dunkeld.
As expected from an old hotel it could benefit from a refurb but obviously in the current climate, this will come when time allows.
Good place for a pit-stop.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent hotel, lovely staff, great value compared with centre of town and only a 10 min walk away. Will stay there again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good price for the size and condition of the room. Only a 7 min walk from the high street in Dunkeld
- John (10/5): - Excellent hotel very friendly and accommodating food verygood especially breakfasts
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Convenient location, breakfast good, shower poor as was not hot enough. Room a bit gloomy and cold although there was an electric heater if we wanted. Room decor in need of updating
- Verified traveler (10/5): HOTEL - Lovely and like the idea of the Birnam Inn being part of the Hotel. Did not dine in on this occasion but would certainly do if returning to the Milton Birnam Hotel.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We appreciate that it must be very difficult for hotels at this time, opening following a lengthy period of closure. The hotel looks as if it was grand at one time and is now undergoing some refurbishment. However, the taps/plumbing still need a bit of attention, as does the woodwork and furniture on the stairs. It was evident that the carpets in reception had been recently cleaned and the bedding had been pristinely laundered.
I required a taxi early in the morning, sadly the information on the three available taxi companies held by the hotel was not up to date, consequently none were available, or willing to undertake an early call for time and geographic reasons, had it not been for the kindness of another guest I would have been stuck, future guests should note this. Sam on reception, and staff in the dining room were particularly helpful. Sadly my wife did not enjoy her breakfast as much as she thought she would.
- Helen (10/5): short break - I had a lovely couple of days the staff were all really nice very helpful would definitely go back .
- Dylan (10/5): Great Budget Friendly Hotel - Stayed here for the second time in 4 weeks for 3 nights! Room was very comfortable, food in the Scots Bar was reasonably priced and tasty! The breakfasts were great! Lovely budget friendly hotel with welcoming staff and perfect fir exploring the many walks around the Birnam & Dunkeld area! Loved ur even more our second time round! We will be back! 😊
- Davy (10/5): - Enjoyed our stay. Excellent room. Lot of previous reviews said the hotel was outdated but I think that was not the case. I would definitely return here.
- Clare (10/5): Great hotel, great price, great service. - Fantastic service, great hotel in a great location with easy access to Dunkeld, River walk to get there. Hotel is stunning. Rooms are a bit dated, but adds to the character. Man on the front desk and at breakfast was 5 star, great service, great staff. Such a good price. Would definitely stay again.
- DYLAN (10/5): Great Value Hotel in a Fantastic Area - We stayed for four nights for a short break. The area is beautiful and has a path network and two If then start from almost outside the hotel. The staff were courteous and friendly. Hand sanitisers available as you go in. Room was comfortable and had the usual amenities. Tasty reasonably priced meals are available at the Birnam Inn directly next door which were great quality and reasonably priced, the Pollo Crema and Cajun Chicken Burger were top notch! Has a lovely little beer garden to sit outside in. The rooms were reasonably priced too! Used my Tesco Clubcard Vouchers by exchanging £60 into £180 Hotels.com token so paid approx £46 for our 4 night stay! We will definitely be back again, even if not using our Clubcard Vouchers, as there are plenty more walking routes in the area for us to explore! If you stay here Thurs-Sunday you MUST have Fish & Chips from the Dunkeld Fish Bar... the best Fish & Chips We’ve had for quite some time!
- Sandra (8/5): - Lovely staff. Great overnight stay and great breakfast.
- Carol (10/5): - Beautiful location and spotless character full room.
- Ashley (6/5): - Very pleasant meal and a comfortable room.
Ample parking.
- Alison (10/5): Fabby - Great value and clean. Very central and very very friendly and helpful staff
- m (8/5): Definitely come back - Really good night's stay very pleasant staff and great meal at the restaurant and great price for room
- Fran (2/5): - I didn’t stay myself but booked for my sister.
She stayed two nights with her husband to attend a wedding nearby and they had a miserable time at birnam hotel.
I saw the room myself and facilities which were not good.
On booking I explained that she required a gluten free breakfast therefore at the very least I would have expected that there would have been gf toast on offer if nothing else.
Really the offer of rice cakes for breakfast, NO!!
This is surely no advert for Scottish tourism.
Avoid at all costs I’d say.
Reviews said “good”, mmmmm
- Ethan (10/5): Worth it - Awesome hotel in an old style building. The gentleman that served us was very nice and polite 10/10 would stay there again
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Negatives - Hotel is faded glory, once must have been lovely. Our room was very warm, and unable to control heat. toilet was connected to a mecerator which was noisy, and requred 3 presses to flush. TV was small. Bed was lumpy. Paintwork in toilet was shabby. Toilet paper stand was rusty.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The setting and architecture. The bedroom and shower facilities were clean if a bit basic.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Perfect location on main road with plenty of parking, room was quiet and reasonably clean.
The hotel is a little dated and tired looking in places, the lift is a lovely step back in time just need a bellhop to press the buttons!
Elements of the hotel could do with a clean and refresh, dusty tables on the stairwells and peeling dirty paper in the rooms bathroom gave a tired and lack of investment feel.
Seems like the sort of place Alex Polizzi as the Hotel Inspector would visit and encourage to bring itself up to date.
Staff were pleasant and the breakfast was ok.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Everything was okay excellent for what I was doing fishing
- Verified traveler (8/5): - A lovely old building and nice quiet location.
Friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Room was very nice and clean smelt lovely would stay again
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Location is lovely, very traditional could do with some upgrading but for the money was great value.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Great Location. Good breakfast. Staff pleasant. Nice old building some of furnishings a bit tired.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The room was freezing cold, the heater would not work, the bed so too hard and the bacons and eggs I asked for at breakfast manifested into a very greasy toasted bacon sandwich. I will not recommend or return, Not good value for money - in my case comfort was lacking. The food was awful. When I mentioned my thoughts, they were swept aside by a member of staff who didn't care and just wanted the money.
