Guest Reviews
- Timothy (10/5): -
- Gerhard (10/5): Super nice and authenticstay. - The owner Shin is super supportive and his advice for good places to go and to eat provides a unique possibility to dive into the Japanese way of live. Many thanks! The accommodation provides all what it promises. A historic well kept place to stay. Not luxurious but greatly authentic.
- Luwei (10/5): -
- Magdalena (10/5): Authentic charm and a traditional space - The place is simply beautiful, every single detail feels intentional and beautiful. The futons were very comfortable, the heated table in the living room space was a lovely addition for a chilly evening. We only wish we could’ve stayed longer and spend more time in this beautiful place. Can’t recommend it enough.
- Hanh (10/5): Exceptional - Host was very thoughtful and took care of us. Upon arrival he already waited for us at the front door and walked us through the accommodation. They also prepared a tea ceremony to greet us. Everything was laid out and was there for us. We also got tips and guide around Kyoto.
- Lisa (9/5): Superb - Incredible service and cottage was beautiful and cozy. Bikes were very much appreciated! Highly recommend!
- Sophie (10/5): Exceptional - The typical japanese house was very nice and clean. We had a very good time at Kyoto Machiya Cottage Karigane. It's well located, away from the very crowded center of Kyoto. Shimo was a wonderfull host, who helped us a lot with every question we had. We did also a very nice guided bycicle tour with Shimo. We would recommend thus house it to everybody !
- Kain (10/5): Exceptional - This was one of the finest stays I've ever experienced in terms of the overall package; our host, Shimo, was so warm and was an incredibly gracious resource. I was blown away by the hospitality, attention to detail, and how we felt at home so far way from home. Literally nothing. Shimo and his partner are wonderful hosts.
- Loredana (10/5): A memorable and cultural experience - An incredible and memorable stay for part of our time in Kyoto. We were greeted by Shimo who proceeded to give us an in depth introduction to the area and the home, complimented with a tea ceremony. The house was clean, stocked with all the essentials and more as well as free bikes to use at our leisure. Shimo was always available via WhatsApp and helped us with a dinner reservation at a local izakaya. This is the perfect cultural experience and such a blessing to be welcomed into such a beautiful space. We loved every minute.
- Winston (10/5): Fantastic spot, one of the best places we stayed on our vacation - Shimo's place is amazing, location is near many great temples and parks. The facility is a traditional japanese ryoken and it really gives a great feel. It has all the comforts of a modern home with the traditional aspects. As a bonus we also had bikes to use and bike around the neighborhood and feel like a local. We were also able to bike to many different sites close by. Overall it's a fantastic place, Shimo is so helpful and responsive to ensure you have a great stay. We were so lucky to book this spot.
- Xiaoxiao (10/5): Exceptional - Super clean, nice place to live in Kyoto, it’s our favourite part in Japan. highly recommended
- Max (10/5): above and beyond stay in this beautiful traditional japanese townhouse - The Machiya proved to be the perfect housing for our stay in Kyoto and Shimo, the host, proved to be invaluable in his recommandation. We think the setting is perfect for a family and we loved to stay in a real neighborhood instead of a touristy place. We made extensive use of the bikes that were loaned to us. Thanks to them, we were able to crisscross Kyoto although your youngest son is only 10. Shimo not only welcomed us but helped us with our itineraries and even booked our restaurants, we were able to ask him for his help at any moment we had a question. 10/10 ! nothing
- Giannina (10/5): Exceptional - We rented Karigane with the idea of experiencing Kyoto as locals and we got that and so much more. Shimo and his wife have put so much love in restoring this beautiful historical home and you can tell that by the attention to details: from the beautiful stone work at the entrance, the intricate tile design in the Japanese shower and tub room, to a small hidden gallery showcasing images from the house's history and the renovation work that was done.
They are the most attentive hosts providing any detail you can imagine: a welcoming tea ceremony, maps of the neighbourhood with great recommendations for bars, restaurants, cafes and shops; manga books of Japanese cuisine, yukatas for our daily use, and delicious snacks and drip coffee. Shimo was also very communicative throughout our whole stay, ready to help us with any last minute recommendations.
We were truly sad to leave as Karigane felt like our own home from the moment we stepped in. We can't wait to go back. Thanks for everything Shimo! Nothing, its perfect!
- Courtney (10/5): Great hosts! Wonderful experience in Kyoto - Beautiful and well designed
- Andy (10/5): This was such a beautiful place to stay! Thank you Shimo :) -

- James (10/5): A most wondeful insight into living in Kyoto!!! - Everything. It’s beautifully designed with wonderful attention to detail. The owner Shimo san looked after us so well. He welcomed us with a tea ceremony and his shopping, sightseeing and restaurant recommendations were spot-on!!!
Such a refreshing change to staying in a hotel. We had the whole house to ourselves and were so well looked after by Shimo san who lives 3 minutes away. We could not have enjoyed more! It was wonderful loved everything about it!
- Oliver (10/5): Traditional japanese house in good location and wonderful host - The house is exceptional and beautiful . It is perfectly well maintained and equipped, Shimo is a wonderful host. He made us feel at home in Kyoto.
- Rachel (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful house and host.
- Santosh (6/5): Not worth the price we paid - - Host was hospitable and helpful
- Good location
- Comfortable stay
- Neat and Clean
- Tea ceremony was nice - Host was not flexible for an early check in
- Host was not flexible for an hour late check out
- There was no free breakfast
- For the price of 50,000 Yen (US$385 / S$520) per night, it was not worth it. Good 4 star hotels are available for US$150 to 200 per night in Kyoto
- Zhenyan (10/5): best experience in Kyoto - Clean and friendly owner! nothing!
- Lien (10/5): Wonderful & Amazing Stay - I will give 10 star if I can ! This is the best ever stay I’ve ever experienced In Kyoto ! The whole house is so organized and elegant in details. Will definitely come back again !
