Guest Reviews
- Sharon (8/5): - In general, everything was great. Our room, however, had the restroom outside the room. Outside of that, we enjoyed our stay.
- Darryl (10/5): - The in keeper was very nice and welcoming. The room was well kept and appointed.
- Alexander (10/5): - Sheila is great, the rooms are nice and clean, comfy beds!
- bart (10/5): - Nice, clean and modern.I would stay there again.
- Jan (8/5): - The room was impeccably clean and 1.5 miles to downtown Kansas City - an easy walk straight up 12th street.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very clean, well maintained and comfortable. Host was friendly and made us feel at home. Need a car as there is really nothing walkable.
- Saori (10/5): - The owner is really nice! My room, bathroom, kitchen, dining and the entire house is very clean! I was a little nervous when I arrived in front of the door but she gave me a warm welcome! Free bottled water in the refrigerator, k-cup coffee and microwave were so useful for me! It’s 5 mins away from the Convention Center by car so that the area was pretty quiet. There’s no shops around the property but other than that, I really enjoyed relaxing!
- Angie (6/5): - I would maybe suggest a deadbolt on the bedroom.door.
Also Kleenex and cups in the bathroom would have been nice another suggestion update to a smart tv for steaming purposes.
Overall we had a good experience at the house.
- Barbara (4/5): - This property is a bedroom in a ho. I was there for work. I teach on line in the mornings & is not sound proof such as a hotel rm or any air B & B I have stayed in. I was on a zoom, teaching... The host interrupted me and was upset that I was making noise! I have taught in Air B & B's & hotels all the time. This was very upsetting.
There was no coffee maker or small frig. in the room, so you have to go downstairs in a common area. It was inconvenient & limiting.
It was very clean but there were a lot of smells such as air fresheners or cleaning products. If you have allergies this could be a problem. Since I am holistic & don't like toxins in the air, it bothered me a lot.
- Clayton (10/5): - Beautiful property, Lovely Host and convenient transport options, had an amazing time in KC....
- Bethamy (2/5): - Be warned! Their ridiculous 2- hour check-in policy is stated on page 3 of the itinerary. Don't fall into the same non-refundable trap we did. At 7:15 in downtown Kansas City, we were left on the streets...ruining our honeymoon. They refused to come back out for us; we were tagged a "no-show". We lost hundreds of dollars. They sent no warning about their check-in policy.
- Eric (10/5): The cleanliness of a hotel, the warmth of an inn - Very nice inn with a wonderful innkeeper. The promises of privacy were kept and my room had all the comforts of home. Highly recommend, would stay again.
- Teresa (10/5): Beautiful Place to Stay - Super clean room with elegant furniture and comfortable bed. Very quiet. Upon arrival the innkeeper greets you with instructions and then available by phone if needed during your stay. Definitely recommend.
- Peggy (2/5): - This was awful, I will never tell anyone about this place, the owner is rude. The policy says no refunds, I had a work convention, ( the date had been changed to the weekend of the 12th) I asked for a refund, I knew the policy but I thought they would understand sometimes things change and are out of our control, but no, she would not refund me, I gave her a notice too. Then I got to her place and I couldn't even park in the driveway and unload because someone else requested the driveway I just
4:40 PM
Wanted to unload my car, she said move it. So later that evening after a long day of driving & Volleyball my granddaughter wanted to stay with me, I said sure, we got to the house around 10:00 pm, we were settled in the room and there was a knock at my door, it was the owner, she told me that my granddaughter had to leave, I asked her why, she said I didn't ask, didn't pay for her and they have no accommodations for a child, she is 9 and self sufficient. So I would've had to drive her 45 mins
4:44 PM
Back to her hotel then drive back, I said please can you make an exception, she said no, if I did for you I would have to for everyone. I told her I would pay more, she said my granddaughter had to leave. I called my son, her dad and said I have to bring her back, he said just bring your things, that's not how you treat people. We left and I was in tears, I just lost 300.00, can't get a refund and missed my work convention because of a very mean uncaring rude woman. I hope I wasn't
- Nicholas (10/5): - Sheila was a wonderful hostess and very accommodating of my late flight into KC. Amenities were wonderful, very well-kept, and high quality.
- Mary (10/5): Hidden gem!!!!! - My mom and I had a girl's weekend and went to the Ed Sheeran concert. The Secret Place was centralized located to get to everything. We went to the Farmers Market on Saturday morning and was only 5 minute drive.
Clean and comfortable!!! One of the best nights sleep ive had in a minute.
It was so nice to come back to a peaceful place for the night. Will be coming back when we are in town!!!
- Madeline (8/5): - The property ended up being harder to commute to the Power and Light district than we anticipated. The owner is lovely, and the room was stunning and very clean. We did feel as though we had to be very quiet as we could hear the other guests’ conversations. This room is also not made for short people! I am 5’0” and I could not use the bathroom mirror and had to literally jump up to get into the bed each time. The bed was also very, very plush which hurt our backs quite a bit, but I know everybody has different preferences. Rooms are on third floor so definitely would not be good for somebody who can not climb stairs. The breakfast consisted of yogurt, nuts, Cheerios, and on one day it was a breakfast sandwich and the other it was toast. Overall 3.5/5
- Francie (10/5): - Sheila was absolutely wonderful! What a wonderful place to stay. Absolutely beautiful and welcoming
- Matthew (10/5): 5 stars - Beautiful place, super quiet and clean. It felt like we had the whole house to ourselves. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone.
- Linda (10/5): Wonderful Place! - We LOVED staying at the Secret Place. It was so clean and beautifully decorated. The room was spacious. Breakfast was delicious. We would stay there again!
- A (10/5): - Place was superb. The host sheila was fantastic and could not help enough.
- Francis (10/5): - Sheila was a great host. She prepared some lovely breakfasts and the room was very comfortable.
- Jonathan (10/5): Perfect place to stay in downtown area. - Super clean, super friendly, easily accessible, and perfect for a calm stay. Check-in and out was a breeze and no hassle from an in keeper or anything. The property is just blocks from downtown and has a beautiful view of the city sky line. This was a top notch stay for us. Highly recommend.
- Wendy (10/5): Peace and quiet - Walking up to the home you could smell a warm friendly aroma in the home. The owner was sweet and pleasant. Check in was easy. The bed was very comfortable and the home is just so cozy and comfy. Would definitely stay here again if we have to visit KC,MO again. Highly recommended. The breakfast was delicious as well
- Wendy (10/5): - Nicely decorated property. Quiet, the other guest was quiet as well. The coffee and tea options were nice as well as the breakfast provided.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Don’t go if you are a smoker - Hotel says non-smoking on Hotels.com (like most hotels) and so my husband not only went outside but across the street to smoke. The posted rules said no smoking within 20 feet of the premises so he was very respectful of that.
Then, as we were getting ready to leave to celebrate our anniversary, the host told us that it was 100% no smoking and smokers shouldn’t even stay here and offered half our money back. She said that the website says 100% no smoking although we booked through hotels.com, not the website. And even if we had booked through the website, to us 100% no smoking means 100% no smoking on the property which was respected by my husband.
We declined her offer for a partial refund, reassured her that he wouldn’t smoke on the property, and went out for the evening.
Upon returning, my husband was very uncomfortable for the rest of the night and only went out once to smoke in the morning before leaving.
This interaction led to an awkward experience and we never did feel comfortable there.
Also, the “private” bathroom for our room was exclusively for our use but was across a shared hallway so we had to get dressed every time we needed to use the bathroom at night.
- Tammy (10/5): - A very pretty and well maintained space. The backyard area was so beautiful and landscape manicured. We loved the bed and linens. So comfy and accommodating.
- Stacie (10/5): - Excellent property best kept Secret in Kansas City Mo
- Susan (10/5): - Beautiful home with a very hospitable and friendly hostess. Classy and comfortable furnishings. Delicious breakfast. Easy to find and convenient to restaurants and attractions. We hope to visit again and again.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Sneaky Pete - I called at 6 pm the night of my reservation to let them know we were on our way from out of town.
I was told no one would be able to check us in and my reservation had beed cancelled without a refund. I was told I had been sent an email at 7:30 am that morning stating I would need to make prior arrangements for check in if not checking in 4 to 6 pm. I asked if arrangements could be made as we were 2 hours away and was told no. They would not work with me at all even tho they still had time to find someone or make an arrangement such as a door code.
In fairness the e mail was there when I checked later but who would think you needed to check as I had already confirmed my reservation. This seems like it is planned this way.
This place states your money is non refundable if you have to cancel but what they dont tell you, until you are booked, is that you have to be there between 4 and 6 pm.
Most people are coming from out of town obviously so I would think this would be difficult for most people.
This is a sneaky pete kind of thing. I had to scramble to find another place to stay. Needless to say it was a very expensive weekend when they refused to work with me at all.
This is not good business practice. Check thier site. It does not say anywhere upfront that you can only check in from 4 to 6.
- geraldine (4/5): - I didn't get to go because of exposure to covid and quarantining. I purchased the insurance however the owner did not honor my refund. I am so disappointed. This was so expensive and unfair. I will not stay at this establishment ever and will not use Expedia for reservations ever again.
- Jerry (10/5): Great Location. Great Breakfast. Just Great. - We came to town for the Plaza Art Show and the Chiefs game. Secret Place is a convenient location to access I-70 which takes you anywhere you want to go in KC. The place is spotless and very comfortable. Sheila was pleasant and professional. The breakfast exceeded our expectation and we enjoyed meeting the other couple renting the adjacent room. The private bathroom for our room was across the hall...not the most convenient, but is totally expected in a B&B.
- Ricardo (8/5): - I didn’t like to find out during my check in that the room is on the third floor with no elevator, I have a bad knee
- Debbie (10/5): Outstanding - Our 2nd time to stay here & it was perfect! Great accommodation & pristine clean! Fresh towels daily & bed remade & fluffed upon our return from a day out in KC!
- Karen (10/5): Amazing - This my first stay in a Bed and Breakfast. It was a positive experience. The Secret Place
was very inviting and peaceful. I felt at home and very welcomed. Sheila (the Inn Keeper) was very attentive and went above and beyond to make sure we was comfortable.
I highly recommend The Secret Place. It was was a short drive to everything. My husband and I plan to stay here in the future the next time we are in Kanas City.
- Robert (10/5): Wonderful!!! - The room was clean and comfortable. The B&B is beautifully decorated. Soft piano music was playing in the living area. There are only 2 rooms available, so there is no crowd. The owner, Shiela, is a delight. The breakfast was delicious. The only negatives were the street parking and the may stairs to get up to the room. Wonderful property. We were enjoying ourselves so much we forgot to take photos.
- Debbie (10/5): Family Memories 2021!🇺🇸 - Absolutely lovely accommodations! Quiet, friendly, comfortable & ideal for our trip!! Highly Recommend!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is wonderful hidden gem in KC. It is minutes away from KCP&L and The Plaza. Sheila, the Innkeeper, is amazing. She is very personable and an excellent cook. The breakfast was to die for. This is one of the best B&Bs I have ever stayed at. The room was perfect. The decor and ambiance was so inviting.
If you are looking for a quick little getaway- please check out this hidden gem…you will not be disappointed.
- Anita (6/5): Sept 26, 2020 - Description gave it as a bed and breakfast. I understand the Covid restrictions. Unfortunately, there was no notice that thete would be a breakfast included. Even if a continential breakfast available..rolls abd fruit..coffee was available. Upon making reservation, said our room was the only one available, so we were not aware we would have the whole house to ourselves until the next am.
- Ferdinand (10/5): - The entire facility is just immaculate. Very comfortable bed. Felt just like home. Would highly recommend to anyone.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This property was extremely clean, cozy, and comfortable!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Clean, comfortable, good and simple breakfast. Quiet and relaxed. Spacious room and nice amenities.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Clean renovated quiet .
- Shawn (10/5): - Great little place. Breakfast was small but fantastic.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This house is beautiful and very clean!! The sheets are super soft and the bed is very comfy! Sheila is a great host!!!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Sheila was very nice and mostly let us keep to ourselves. I was a bit worried about the area of town as we drove in (we don't know much about Kansas City). It's very near downtown/Power & Light and close to the action, but that also meant it was a bit noisy at night (sirens, traffic, etc). Sheila was very mindful of making sure we kept the front door locked at all time and that made me feel safe. Breakfast was simple but satisfying. Overall very pleased with our stay. Rooms and common areas are very clean and we appreciated the off-street parking.
- Karen (10/5): Great Kansas City location - Easy to find, spotlessly clean, and comfortable. There were lots of stairs which might prove an obstacle for some. City view of sunset from our room was beautiful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Sheila was a great host. The room was super clean and the bed was very comfortable. We woke up to the smell of our delicious breakfast being cooked. I would definitely stay here again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A very clean and beautiful bed and breakfast. I can’t say enough about how clean it is..... this was important to us. You have everything you need here. Would stay here again when in KC. Close to everything.
- William (10/5): A Valentines Getaway! - Because of the location I thought I was going to hate it! Once me and my wife walked inside my attitude changed completely! The Secret Place Bed and Breakfast is a very beautiful and cozy place to take your significant other to have some alone time. My room was very nice and very clean, other than it not having cable, it was perfect! We enjoyed ourselves and plan to return soon.
- Teresa (10/5): This one's a gem - Hospitality at its best! Comfortable, spacious room. Bed comfy, shower amazing. Host was friendly, helpful and gave us our privacy. Breakfast was delicious! The location is easy to find just on the outskirts of downtown. We were in town for a convention and the drive was a straight shot from B&B. Convention center parking $12 a day.
- Madeline (10/5): Couldn't have asked for a better host/home in KC - Very charming, cozy, and excellent service! Sheila was a dream host - and she makes an excellent breakfast.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Get away! - Love the place! Comfy and cozy!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Amazing Decor and immaculately clean. Continental breakfast was simple but satisfying
- Tracey (10/5): Our Anniversary weekend - Our stay there was amazing. I would recommend this place to everybody. If you want relaxation, quiet place and good breakfast this the place. Sheila was so helpful and friendly. If you need a romantic place then you need this place. Good environment and safe. We really enjoy being there and will come back.
- Joel (10/5): - Wonderful hostess, she was quite understanding and easygoing when my arrival date was postponed due to missing a connecting flight. The house is beautiful and spacious and my room was no exception. Anything I needed, all I had to do was ask. I would absolutely stay here again!
