Guest Reviews
- Geoffrey (9/5): Lovely country pub with large outdoor grassed area at rear with seating.. - Thought what a good idea having light breakfast items in your room. There was a generator noise throughout the night
- Philip (10/5): -
- Keith (9/5): -
- azsmin (9/5): Good room at the inn on Severn Way - Good access and parking, comfortable room, good shower, towels and toiletries, nice selection of items in room to make breakfast at a time of my convenience, interesting village and location on Severn Way. Didn't get a chance to try the restaurant for dinner due to other commitments
- David (10/5): An absolute gem in a peaceful location. - The self-service breakfast in the room was so comprehensive - it was a shame I couldn't sample it all! The rooms are reached by a staircase to a 'private' door at the rear of the Inn, mine was spotlessly clean, and included many thoughtful touches of 'luxury'. Quiet rural village location, but only about 3 miles from the M48. Nothing at all. I was unable to fully appreciate, and comment on, the dining facilities due to external commitments.
- Helen (8/5): - Really nice Needs to be checked as only 1 yogurt for 2 people and only 1 butter for 4 pieces of toast .. nobody about in the morning to get extra
- Robert (10/5): -
- Paul (9/5): -
- Mark (9/5): Very comfortable and welcoming - Clean, quiet, nice pub and meals
- Suzie (10/5): A very nice stay. Would definitely stay here again - Very friendly and welcoming staff who made us feel very welcome. Great food for dinner. The atmosphere was very nice.
- Gary (9/5): - Location. The accommodation was great. Very small dislike. It wasn't clear about the breakfast arrangement with food items in the room.
- David (10/5): excellent accomodation & food. - Clean, comfortable & super quiet na

- christine (8/5): Great for a short stay - The Anchor is in a lovely peaceful location close to the river. The rooms are comfortable, with everything that you need. The ensuite with shower was a little small - but there's not much you can do about that! The carpet being light coloured was showing some stains.
- Joanna (8/5): - Staff were warm and welcoming and pub food was great and good value!
- Richard (8/5): Consistently good stay - I have stayed here before and the experience was equally as pleasant and comfortable as previous stays. The ambience and food were perfect after a busy working couple of days. The only issue which I believe was out of the Anchor's control was the Wi-Fi went offline for a while. It was ok in the morning ready for work so no real issue.
- Ross (8/5): If you want to stay in this area, this is a recommended venue - for comfort and food. - Location for the work related activity was excellent. Room was large and comfortable. Food in the bar/restaurant was very good and good value for money. In the summer the outside seating would be very attractive - not so good in the winds! Breakfast is continental breakfast only, provided in the guest rooms. It worked well, but I missed my cooked breakfast
- Anthony (10/5): Brilliant!! - Absolutely superb little hotel, only 5 minutes from where I needed to be. Excellent restaurant for my evening meal and the room was superb, comfortable and quiet
- Hilary (9/5): Great location, friendly staff, nice food - Always good
Staff helpful
Evening meal great, menu changes
Love breakfast in the cupboard Price is creeping up a bit
- Luke (10/5): Great, will be back - Great location, lovely pub for dinner, convenient breakfast
- Matt (9/5): Good enough to bother to write a review. - The best bed linen I have seen in a hotel. Views of horses out of the window.
- stephen (8/5): -
- Haydn (9/5): I felt there were many imaginative touches behind this little hotel, and I hope to stay again . - A solid breakfast necessarily taken in our room.
Fridge well and imaginatively stocked: Ijust feel some fresh fruit would have balanced the meal. The coffee Nespresso machine was much appreciated.. I really can't think of any faults.
- Lisa (7/5): - Beautiful pub with a nice atmosphere The bedrooms were basic, the bed wasn’t particularly comfortable and it was very hot in the room
- Marcus (10/5): Great room, nice breakfast included and staff very attentive. - Staff were really pleasant and helpful.
- Sharon (8/5): A good stop off point if travelling south - Very good pub meals. Breakfast facilities in the bedroom were top rate. Pretty village , nice location Double bed … queen ir king size would be preferable for Two people sharing
- john (7/5): -
- Prakash (8/5): -
- Bastiaan (9/5): wonderful old Inn in a pittoresk surrounding. - Very nice zraditional pub with rooms. Good kitchen, wonderful location friendly personel. The only minus: no cooked breakfast in the morning. But a good continental breakfast is provided in the room (fridge and "larder".
- Hilary (9/5): lovely old Inn, so comfortable, staff friendly and helpful. - we stay here each time we come to Thornbury. the food is fantastic and we love Breakfast in a cupboard. The Room and Food prices are starting to creep up but I guess that's just COL
- Richard (9/5): - Clean spacious room and bathroom. Comfortable bed. Nice size TV. Food in the lounge was hot and tasty. I liked having continental breakfast in my room. Plenty to choose from. An enjoyable one night stay. There was nothing to complain about.
- Susan (8/5): Good value, met all my expectations. - Lovely old pub, eve meal excellent and good value. Comfortable room, good facilities, well set up for in-room breakfast.
- Susan (10/5): Had a very pleasant relaxing stay. - The breakfast was choice of cereal and toast. Milk and butter, bottled water, yoghurt and orange juice in the small fridge. Bread jams nutella and marmite and coffee pods in the cupboard at the side of the fridge along with cutlery and crockery. Good quality toaster and kettle. Tea coffee and chocolate drinks and biscuits also provided in the room. Nothing
- Paul (10/5): See you next time. - Great location. Super friendly atmosphere.
- Michael Turnbull (9/5): - As above Quiet room and really comfortable bed,
Room warm with good view of the garden
Will happily visit again
- Meg (8/5): - Confortable bed and pleasant room. Friendly staff and tasty evening meal I didn’t like not having a breakfast in a dining room. It was in a cupboard in the bedroom, which was rather unsatisfactory.
- Mark (8/5): -
- Jill (9/5): Lovely pub in a beautiful setting, with good beer and food and excellent staff. - Location - history and atmosphere of the building - beer and food - excellent staff - lovely clean and comfortable room with an excellent bed. Would have preferred cooked breakfast as a closed pub is not so welcoming (although we would expect to pay more for this) however the breakfast which was provided in the room was perfectly adequate.
- Roy (9/5): If you like accommodation away from the city and towns you will enjoy this place. - Nice friendly accommodation, away from the city centre. Food was very good and the continental breakfast in your room was different but good. No issues at all either the accommodation. Only issue I had went to The Anchor Inn at Thornbury, no accommodation, but I was booked in at The Anchor Inn Oldbury on Severn Thornbury very confusing.
- Helen (10/5): -
- Malcolm (10/5): - Everything location very secluded quiet but only 15 mins front chepstow No complaints
- Craig (10/5): -
- Concetta (8/5): Lovely weekend get away. The room was very comfortable and the food delicious. - We had a lovely stay. The area is quiet if you're craving some country side vibes and go for long walks in the area. It's also very close to the Welsh border and to the river Wye valley.
The food was very nice. The fish pie was delicious. The towels provided had some marks and the carpet was in need of a clean.
- Lee (10/5): - The welcome, the room, the facilities, the value for money.
I would definitely stay here again! Nothing not to like.
- Richard (9/5): -
- Mark (9/5): -
- Susan (10/5): - Ideal place to stay for a quiet stay.
Lovely staff. And the guy who came from the kitchen and again on my return journey. Would definitely stay again if I was in the area. N/A
- Susan (10/5): - The pub is off the beaten track in a nice quiet location. Ideal if you want a meal as well. Being able to sort your own breakfast out in the room was novel, no stress in having to get to breakfast on time. N/A
- Hugh (10/5): Wonderful pub and location - The place in the village and surroundings. Good old fashion pub with great simple straightforward pub food. Our room was the best one we have stayed in for a very long time. Nothing
- Phil (9/5): Fine place to stay - The room, the evening meal and the range of provisions for the breakfast. Nothing
- Andrew (9/5): -
- Jackie Mewton (10/5): Hidden Gem - Gorgeous Room. Loved the bed, so comfy. We had an overnight stay, had a lovely Roast in the pub.
Bathroom had a lovely big bath plus a separate shower. Lovely.
Breakfast was all in the fridge, make your own, absolutely best Home Made Granola ive ever tasted.
Little jar of sweets. The owners gave thought if everything. Deffo stay again. The shower door didn't close properly at the bottom. Easy to sort though. Nothing else.
- Terry (8/5): All as enquired and expected - Breakfast convenient in room and sufficient
- Patricia (7/5): -
- Bruce (9/5): -
- Neil (8/5): -
- Alan (10/5): - Perfect location, great pub, great staff. A shame it only has 3 rooms as I've not been able to book the previous 2 months.
Nice to, not be in a typical chain hotel
- Timothy (8/5): Relaxing. - Good location, lovely friendly staff, good traditional English pub, restaurant food was great, ample parking, nice and quiet, only the sounds of the countryside, a place to feel relaxed and safe. Bathroom/toilet was a little bit small but still functional, would really have liked a proper English breakfast for what was paid, thier chefs could have cooked up a lovely one, the do it yourself in the room with toast and cereal fell a little short, if given the option we would have paid extra for it.
- Muskett (10/5): - Beautiful rooms, comfortable beds. Loved the breakfast provided in your room..choices of cereals or homemade granola, yoghurts etc, evening meal was also excellent.
Location is in a quiet village but the inn was very popular with a lovely buzz in the evening. Nothing to dislike here!
- Hildersley (9/5): - Lovely location and a very comfortable room.
- Koren (10/5): Fab pub! - Lovely area, great pub - delicious food, room was well appointed, bed comfortable, staff team were great! Having to leave!
- michael (9/5): Well presented rooms - appreciated the good level of cleanliness. - Nice welcome - room well presented with a number of touches which were well received. Good level of cleanliness. We were able to take our breakfast in the garden which felt like a bonus. External concreate steps up to the bedrooms - you need to have your wits about you if not steady on your feet.
- heather (10/5): - Loved our stay , I struggle with eating out because I am free from dairy and gluten, but the staff were very kind and made sure I had a meal made which I could eat. Very polite young staff members too. 5 star ⭐.
- Hilary (9/5): Comfortable stay in good location for walking. - Clean, comfortable, good location, nice walk along Severn Way. Friendly staff. Steps to bedroom. Option of cooked breakfast in restaurant would be nice.
- Howard (8/5): - Very nice for a night away
- Paul (10/5): A lovely old English pub, perfect in everyday! - The food in the pub is very good indeed and the service exceptional. The bedroom was perfectly planned, and fresh. Having the breakfast essentials in the room was perfect for us..the homemade granola is delicious! Nothing, couldn't have been better!
- Tina (10/5): -
- John (8/5): Not the best place to get to but worth the drive on the single track roads - Comfy, clean and quiet Not the most accessible
- Ruth (9/5): A lovely huge room at a friendly pub in a great countryside location. - A huge room with lovely views over the fields and garden. Extremely large comfy bed and big bathroom with both bath and shower. I hadn't realised that breakfast was provided in the room and there was no hot option. There was juice, yogurt, cereals and bread for toast which was fine, although some simple /easy to follow instructions for the coffee machine would be good.
- Katherine (8/5): Perfect for a quiet break - Lovely period Inn, with an nice range of beers
Quality appliances in the room including a Nespresso machine. Breakfast was stored in the room in a fridge and cupboard. Although no cheese or cold meats, the selection was more than sufficient and the homemade granola delicious The carpet was stained
Needed transport to get around
Pub closed earlier than expected
- Nowaz (10/5): Great accommodation, good food - Hotel room, pub food A bit remote location
- Richard (8/5): Very good - Lovely comfy bed (I was cycling LEJOG).
Great service in pub for evening meal, nice shower, handy continental breakfast. Great location for me. There was a background humming noise 24/7 from outside (generator/fan from heat pump?)
- Gintare (9/5): Superb - Nice place, quiet village
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mark (10/5): Perfect place to stay - Nice to go back to this hotel after 12 months and it’s still a first class friendly place with great staff and wonderful rooms. Well done everyone 👍
- Adam (10/5): Quite Excellent, food was superb - Absolutely everything is Perfect, comfortable and clean, small details spot on and excellent provisions in the room. Diner was also superb Nothing
- Gary (9/5): Lovely old pub with a great history. Excellent base for traveling in the area and over into Wales - Breakfast was in the room. There was a small fridge and everything provided was fresh and as described. The staff were professional, excellent and very friendly. Great food and had an evening meal on every night. Great pint of Otter and good range of wines available N/A
- Colin (9/5): Superb -
- Darren (10/5): Exceptional - In a fab setting, pub & pub food was fantastic with large beer garden. Rooms were very spacious, and incorporated everything we needed. Excellant service N/A
- John (10/5): Superb Old English Pub in a Lovely (Quiet) setting ! - A nice large room away from the busy pub with excellent facilities. The Food Menu at the Anchor is wonderful - we had a great time !

- Peter (8/5): Very good -
- Sharon (7/5): Good -
- Alison (10/5): Exceptional - Clean and spacious
- David (8/5): Homeward - Comfortable room, well equipped excellent food. The stairs leading up to the rooms were quite steep and not perhaps suitable for someone infirm.
- Duncan (10/5): Great - All good Nothing
- Ian (10/5): Great stop off for the Plymouth ferry port - Very helpful staff
Great food in the evening
Nice atmosphere
Fab garden Nothing
- Janine (7/5): Good - Beautiful pub and surroundings friendly and helpful staff Was a little disappointed with breakfast as thought it was a cooked breakfast not cereal bread and yogurts in the room although very nice and unfortunately our room had the air con outside so didn’t sleep very well as the could hear it through the night but apart from that would return again but would request the far end bedroom as was much bigger and had a bath beautiful room
- David (10/5): Accessible, rural tranquility with spotless accommodation and perfect service. - I was quite happy with the DIY breakfast provided. There was everything needed for a 'cold' breakfast (incl. bread and toaster). The quality was excellent and a delightful touch was the home-grown granola. Had an existing external evening appointment, so I was unable too sample the extensive dining/drinking facilities. All the staff were polite, friendly and helpful. Don't change anything ... for me it was perfect.
- John (9/5): Very comfortable room in a perfect community inn. - Lovely room and excellent pub. Good beer and food.
- Marina (8/5): Very good - Location, beautiful building, clean & friendly & helpful staff. Menu a bit disappointing & food ok but not great
- Susan (8/5): A perfect stop en route for Ireland - Our travel arrangements were complicated and Ruby was extremely helpful.
The room and the breakfast supplies showed a lot of thought and were mostly really good quality. The low fat yoghurt . Not my thing!
- Sally (9/5): Comfortable room & good breakfast but noisy outside - Breakfast provided in room, already there upon arrival.
Generous breakfast portions.
Great shower.
Blackout curtains to block out pub lights. A lot of noise was made outside our window at 6am by someone moving something heavy (bins, barrels?) across the gravel drive and woke us up.
Constant loud hum from restaurant's chillers very close to our room.
- Graham (9/5): Exactly what I needed. - Staff, facilities, breakfast
- Mark (10/5): Highly recommended stay in a classic English pub. - Lovely stay in a lovely old English pub. Room was excellent , as was the fish pie for dinner.
Good continental breakfast in the room.
A bit off the beaten track but that adds to its appeal.
Highly recommend. Nothing to dislike
- Narendra (8/5): Very good -
- Maria (10/5): A super stay in a gorgeous, bright room with lovely views. - Breakfast was DIY and left available in the room. Loved that! Nothing
