Guest Reviews
- Roger (8/5): - good
- Norman (9/5): Provided ideal accommodation for what we wanted - Great breakfast
Lovely room
Good beer
Excellent value
Attentive host All good
- Clare (10/5): - Good location
- Jack (10/5): -
- Kathryn (9/5): Enjoyable, comfortable stay. Friendly welcome. - No Breakfast included. Comfy bed and clean facilities. Very friendly staff and locals. Good evening meal I understand that the owners have only recently taken on the pub. The only criticism would be that the carpets on the stairs/landing are a little bit grubby
- john (10/5): Only stayed one night but really felt at home - Really friendly
- Michel (10/5): -
- Paul (8/5): -
- Georgina (8/5): - The room was clean, we got a free upgrade which was nice, the location and little village are stunning. We travelled from Essex for a family funeral, travelled for over 6 hours and were shattered when we arrived. We would have liked to just sit and relax but sadly the bar was closed for the night so we had to go back out to get ourselves something to eat. Had we known the bar wasn't going to be open we would have booked elsewhere as we had to travel back to Essex the following day so it just felt like a mad rush.
- Katie (8/5): Nice little pub, great for a local wedding we attended - Convenient location for a wedding we were attending, nice sized room Not clear instructions given on how to get in and out of the property but otherwise staff very helpful and friendly
- Claire (8/5): Good base in a lovely location - Good b&b for one night. Friendly staff The tea bags, yak
- Tamyra (10/5): Was a very nice stay, the hosts there were very kind and made you feel like you were welcome. -
- PMG234 (8/5): Good - Landlord and staff are lovely friendly people
- Neil (6/5): - Location to wedding venue Kitchen closed NO food available
- jenny (6/5): - Friendly staff and owners. We had a leak in the ceiling of our room and no breakfast offered as the kitchen had an issue. No discount offered on our stay so was an over priced stay
- Linda (7/5): Pleasant stay - Bar area with lovely log fire, very convivial. Staircase/corridor to room wasn't clean and had a very unpleasant smell.
No food being served due to time of year with Christmas parties
- Jill (8/5): Lovely overnight stay - Lovely character rooms Parking was a little small but we found some additional parking down the street
- Nick (9/5): -
- beverly (8/5): - N/a Nothing

- Elaine (10/5): - What a fabulous pub in a beautiful location, the staff were great and all the locals made you feel so welcomed,I would not hesitate to go there again,we loved it Nothing to dislike apart from the weather
- Louis (6/5): -
- James (5/5): - The bar area was nice. The lighting in the room was poor with only 1 main light and when this was turned on it flickered constantly making it difficult to use, this was reported but not rectified. We only had 1 cup, reported this and asked for more they never materialised. The mattresses slid off the beds when only sitting on them? We arrived back late on the evening and due to the time had to use they keycode which did not work (we made a video of this as evidence), we spent 20 mins then trying to contact the emergency number at 1am stood outside this was not pleasant. They eventually called back to let us in as we were in a taxi to go to try & find somewhere else to sleep. we were hoping to eat in the bar but unfortunately the cook was ill and no one was able to make us even a sandwich.
- Julia (9/5): We expected a nice but unexceptional pub/rooms and had an unexpectedly good stay. Thanks - Breakfast was excellent. Dinner was very good too (carvery.) We had a superb bottle of wine - so good that we ordered another bottle. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. The bedroom was a good size and very clean. The bed was comfortable. There was a fabulous open fire and we were invited to settle down beside it after dinner. We stayed on a Sunday evening and it's a tribute to the pub's success that they had run out of ale, which was disappointing. However, the Guinness was very well kept and excellent quality.
- Joe (9/5): - Carpet is could have been cleaner. Had some stains.
- Barrass (8/5): -
- cindy (9/5): Pub accommodation, good value for the price. - Friendly landlord, comfy bed, nice and quiet.
- Julie (5/5): Very friendly & helpful staff. Premises could do with a bit of TLC. - Breakfast charge in addition to the room was unexpected & but not best value. Location good for my needs as a family energency No charging point for mobile phone. Additional
charge for breakfast. Not the best value, needs a bit of TLC
- peter (10/5): great craic with the landlord and landlady - the great craic with the landlord and landlady, very welcoming and friendly
- Joanne (10/5): Great stay with a land lord and lady that take time with their guests - Beautiful property. Original features with a modern twist. Comfortable room with modern bathroom

- Jane (10/5): I would definitely recommend the Griffin, we had a lovely stay - It was an old building with lots of character, in a quiet location, our room was very big and the bed was very comfy, and the owners and staff, were very friendly and very helpful. Our breakfast was delicious.
- Dobson (8/5): - A great find in a quiet residential area. The staff were attentive, comfortable surroundings and a delicious breakfast. Nothing.
- Rachel (9/5): Fabulous service, very tasty home cooked food and some of the best nights sleep in a long time - Excellent service, excellent food and very comfortable beds. Great stay!
- Nicola (10/5): Perfect cosy stay - Very clean, cosy room.. modern bathroom with a fab shower!! Comfy bed and great location.. just around the corner from the wedding we were attending! Walking distance so was perfect for us! The host was amazing, showing us to our room and explaining late entry if needed. Lots of teas/coffee etc if u want a hot drink. And we had a lovely little visit in the form of Gerald the emotional support triceratops.. who likes to hang out In the rooms with guests! Nothing
- Laurence (9/5): Was a brilliant stay with a comfy sleepy bed. But breakfast wasn’t served after being arranged. - We liked the style of the property. Spacious car park across the road from the pub making it easy to carry bags in etc. the bedroom was perfectly comfy etc but the carpets needs a wash The carpets up the stairs, hallway and bedrooms all need a good clean. Very grey and stained etc. just didn’t seem very appealing as new customers.
The host offered us breakfast and claimed he was downstairs at 7:45 ready to meet us at 8. We got to the bar at exactly 7:45 on the dot and we stayed until 8:40 - 9:00.
There were no lights on. Nobody around. So found this a little disappointing.
I feel £153 for 2 nights was a little steep but it was the cheapest in the area.
- Stephen (8/5): Friendly comfortable stay in a fab location. Would definitely book again - Beautiful location. Lovely old pub. Stephen and staff couldn’t have been more helpful. Very comfortable big bed (Centaur room). Nice breakfast Minor - website advertises evening food on Tuesdays but non was available. I understand they’ve only taken over a few weeks ago so website is probably not up to date yet. But worth checking in advance as local food options are a drive away.
- Jane (6/5): - Location Tired and in need of some attention. But work in progress
- DT (9/5): 2nd time Round - Nice location plenty of parking stayed before this time was very disappointed, after reading the latest reviews decided to try it again .
Very impressed new landlord very friendly as our the locals rooms are nice very comfortable and quiet a complete turn around from the last time l stayed nicely priced if your walking around or just passing by and need a stop for the night this place is ideal.
Will be booking again
Well done to landlord and staff N/A
- Crystal-Dee (10/5): - Friendly staff and locals, lovely place, drinks and beer garden, thank you!
- Tammy (10/5): - The atmosphere and the friendliness of all the staff was excellent. Perfect stay
- bruce (7/5): -
- Robert (8/5): -
- Clare (9/5): Would highly recommend if hiking or coming for the lovely countryside views. - This is a lovely pub in a picturesque location. The food was lovely and a great price. The rooms are good. The en suite bathroom was very modern. Owner was very attentive to everyone in the pub. Nothing. Only one tiny thing... needs some Yorkshire teabags 🙃
- stephen (10/5): -
- Sandra (10/5): Exceptional - Warm friendly went the extra mile
The Triceratops emotional support is a wonderful idea Nothing
- Suzi (10/5): Cosy and great service - Stayed at the Griffin Inn for a nearby wedding recently and cannot be happier with my stay. The owners were really friendly and helpful, the room was comfortable and clean, and the location was absolutely perfect. I was back from the wedding before the pub had shut however the owners couldn’t have been more accommodating with contingency plans for if I had returned later! Really would recommend.
- Jo (10/5): A fantastic stay thank you - Conveniently located for the wedding venue we attended (The Fleece) the owners who told they had recently took over 7 weeks ago couldn’t do enough for us and made sure we had everything. Car parking available, good food and entertainment available :) N/A
- Gavin (8/5): Extremely budget friendly with good host. - Great pub with large rear beer garden
- Michael (10/5): Small village pub, easy parking and warm welcome. - The new owner Stephen made me so welcome. I arrived late, discovered I had left a bag at the airport car hire desk and he immediately said, “No problem. I will wait up for you. “ He did- until just turned midnight! I stayed 2nights and was made really welcome. Great cooked breakfast too!
- Lynn (10/5): - Beautiful little olde world pub. Steve and Victoria were fantastic hosts. Room was lovely and clean and beds were super comfy. Lovely breakfast as well. Tucked away in a lovely village this place was fantastic. Thanks for a good night we will be back. Nothing
- Daniel (10/5): - Location perfect for a wedding locally. Very friendly and attentive staff. Very comfortable bed and stay. N/A
- Denise (10/5): Stay over - Friendly welcome, great hosts Nothing
- michael (9/5): -
- Maja (6/5): Room was ok but all in all not a super positive experience - It’s nicely located in Barkisland. Beautiful surroundings. Room was spacious and decently cleaned. No bedside lamps (one was sorted). Lights in the bathroom didn’t work which seemed to be a surprise to the owner (but read on booking it’s not a new problem). Stairs up to the room were dirty and tired. Very loud from the pub, even after closing of the pub.
- Brian (8/5): -
- Tim (10/5): - Staff so welcoming and friendly Nothing not to like
- Sue (10/5): Lovley stay reasonable price excellent host - A great welcome from Steve the host
Ensuring we had everything for our 1 night stay … as we were attending a wedding locally
Comfortable room marvellous breakfast
Would recommend and would certainly return
- Brendon (10/5): Good hosts good location great value for money - Nice ambience N/a
- Margaret (8/5): Perfect location and friendly staff - The location was perfect with parking available. The staff were super friendly and helpful, and the other customers in the pub were also welcoming The fan in the bathroom went on for a very long time after the light was turned off and other guests were a little inconsiderate when the came back into their rooms by letting doors bang
- Sandra (9/5): -
- Adrian (8/5): Wasnt actually there long. Just drop off to attend a wedding at lunch time. Nice sleep in quiet room - Location was lovely. Steve was very friendly and helpful. Small issues with rooms but were sorted.
- Sharon (9/5): Good value, friendly inn, modernized rooms. - Lovely little inn with a big family room. Very friendly owner and locals at bar.
Good local dinner recommendations.
Parking for a few cars across the road.
Modernized room. Nothing really.
Niggly light bulbs not working in bathroom.
We were there on a Saturday night when their first band/music night was on. Didn’t bother us but worth considering if you like to sleep early.
Rooms upstairs if that is a problem for you with luggage but owner kindly offered to help.
- Linda (10/5): - An amazing place to stay . So clean and we could not have been welcome any more than we was . The views are beautiful as is the building constructed 1640. Breakfast was gorgeous and they are starting main meals from the day we left which I am sure will be just as good
- Jackie (8/5): Comfortable clean room with a great shower - Lovely old pub, rooms were clean and had a great shower. Also love having Gerald the emotional triceratops in our room 😊
- Vivian (7/5): Great host in interesting property - There was a good car park. The bars were lovely, with different areas in which to sit. The landlord was new to the pub (only 2weeks in) and was really trying to make customers welcome. The room was comfortable ( needed an easy chair), the bathroom was warm, clean and well equipped. Areas leading upstairs needed attention as the stairs carpet was very grubby. The steps are uneven as you would expect in a 350 year old property do needed care.
- Peter (10/5): -
- Catherine (10/5): Fab one night stay at the Griffin Inn friendly hosts and a large comfortable room would definitely recommend - Great stay at the Griffin Inn such a friendly place and a really lovely pub would definitely recommend
- Claire (10/5): Easy and hassle free - Early check in and friendly staff. Nothing
- Laura (10/5): A very comfortable night in a charming pub - Good parking. Very comfortable bed. Good tea/coffee provisions. Friendly host. Spacious room.
- Mark (1/5): Check in from 2pm, arrived 5pm room not made / ready. Got back from gig 11pm & room still same :/ - Location Arrived at 5pm - very blasé told our room wasn’t ready / been cleaned - despite check in being from 2pm.
We were heading straight out to a gig & told it would be done straight away after we left - on return to the room it still had not been cleaned / made, old used sheets still on bed, room not cleaned, hoovered, dirt, previous guests toothpaste still stuck to sink, toenails… Not even a cup / mug to make a cup of coffee - a kettle in room but, no cups and no one to be found to ask.
If check in is from 2pm and we messaged to say we estimated we would arrive at 4pm - to arrive at 5pm and told very ‘shrug of shoulders’ way it wasn’t ready and then return from a gig at 11pm to find the room in the same unmade / dirty state from previous guests is really just not good enough and no one to be found on leaving on check out to ask / mention it to when we got back to the room or when leaving this morning to raise / report the issue.

- John (10/5): An excellent little place to stay. - This is an exceptionally nice little country pub/hotel. Very atmospheric and a perfect place for a short trip. We were welcomed by a really friendly and knowledgeable proprietor who couldn't do enough for us. Value for money was also great. Nothing, it's a perfect little place.
- Anastasia (8/5): - Location, host, we were well looked after. The views also breathtaking. Our hangovers the next morning!
- William (3/5): - None The bed sheet was dirty. I believe that they didn't change it.
- Alyson (9/5): Harry is doing a great job and very helpful - Local to where we were at a function. Harry the manager was very helpful Nothing
- Lisa (7/5): Staff and owner were lovely - The staff and owner were lovely. Couldn’t fault them. Very friendly Check in time
- carl (10/5): Great host, great location and superb accommodation - Great location, super room.
The host was amazing and very accommodating , will deffo be staying there again when we visit Piece Hall Nothing
- barneytot (10/5): -
- Ross (8/5): -
- Daniel (10/5): If you would like a warm welcome then perfect place to stay. - The communication from Harry before our stay was excellent, He made us all feel so welcome, we had a wedding party in the next village and Harry dropped us off and picked us back up, The room was clean and the bed was so comfortable to sleep in. I really enjoyed our stay, so I don’t have anything to say as the price was fantastic for our stay.
- Wayne (7/5): -
- Carly (8/5): Great location - The guy who has taken over was really lovely and kindly dropped us down to the wedding we were attending nearby! We were out all evening but the pub downstairs looked very charming. It’s located in a stunning part of the country, surrounded by beautiful countryside
- Sarah (5/5): Clean, but overpriced on current standard of accommodation. - Welcoming host, clean room. Needs a general update to be worth the rate paid. Bed and pillows are uncomfortable, carpets dirty, stairway areas to access guest entrance need a refresh.
- Trevor (6/5): Quaint Country Village Pub with great potential. - Quaint property, Amiable Host greeted us -Shown to large en suite room with 2 comfortable chairs. Kettle tea & coffee in room. We Booked 17th January based on it being 2 miles from the Wedding Venue we were attending on May 25th. Booked from 23rd -26th being quoted as had Restaurant facility. Menus were visible on the Bar as shown up to our room.
Host explained he had only just taken over & had our room ready. It was exactly as original site suggested for the room. We paid him £440 by transfer.
Asked about evening meal to be told Sorry we haven’t set up a kitchen yet, but could get a Takeaway. Realised then no Breakfast either.
Looked up Booking. com price that showed £85 down to us at £77 on my wife’s mobile. That’s £308 & we had paid £440. We only stayed 3 of the nights in the end. The only 3 complimentary sachets in the en-suite were conditioners not for the shower…. Only realised when about to have showers on the day of the wedding. Had text the host for the milk sachets to be topped up on the
Landing shelf as he had said they would be daily. We managed without & decided we would pack our cases & leave. We then headed home after our day out.
Surely we should have been informed of the situation. The Host did say he had tried to correct the Griffin Inn information but they hadn’t changed it. We used the back entrance as the front pub & entrance was usually closed whenever we were leaving. We were happy enough with the property but should not have been charged based on the past reputation of Griffin Inn!
Booking.Com comments would be appreciated!
Despite the issues we hope the Griffin Inn is supported & successful again in the future at prices that match their facilities. The Host we met was amiable but mostly invisible. We were not even sure if he was still there! We did hear at least one other room’s door open & close whilst there.
- Cris (10/5): - Harry is a great host. Amenable and helpful throughout our stay.
Looking forward to our next stay
- Steven (7/5): -

- Kellie (3/5): Don't bother..... - The location was good for the wedding we were attending and the outlying areas are very pretty. Overall, a very poor stay that we paid far too much for. Booked this months beforehand for £85 a night with breakfast, also said they did food there anyway. Arrived to find a change of owner meant they were no longer doing any food - but we still got charged the full price on arrival - even though the current price was now £65 a night!!
Room was not the best, didn't even have hand soap in the bathroom! There was no hairdryer even in the room, the basics were surely lacking. The tea/coffee hadn't been restocked and were all mixed up like they'd been riffled by the previous people, only one biscuit left in the pot - for two of us!, only a dribble of milk in the fridge - it felt like we'd got the last peoples left overs frankly.
The owner said he'd get us more milk for the morning and leave it outside our door. He also - kindly - offered to take us up to our wedding venue two mins up the road the following day. He seemed very friendly and accommodating at first meeting, however this didn't have much substance.
On waking up there was no milk left so we could not even have a hot drink, he was nowhere to be seen, didn't answer his phone and by 11.30 we had to leave and get ourselves to the venue. Not being funny but don't make promises you aren't going to keep to when you're the owner of the business!
We looked in the room next door as no one was in there and there was hand wash as well as shower gel which we didn't have either! A much nicer room too, so why not put us in there as we'd booked two nights and paid more for it??? How can you have some items in one room and not in another? You clearly have a lot to learn about running a small business.
Overall, the whole experience was lacking and very disappointing, it wasn't worth the money at all and was £50 per night at best frankly.
We complained and have got nowhere with Booking.
- Alan (8/5): -
- Mya (10/5): A brilliant nights stay! - We loved how welcoming the staff were, felt right at home! The room was lovely and just what we were looking for. Nothing!
- Carole (10/5): -
- Jennifer (10/5): Stay for a friends wedding - Brilliant location and the room was lovely
- RAY (7/5): Small issues but generally acceptable. - Nice clean room. New owner / landlord has only been there 3 weeks. No chef so no food available. Website needs updating to show this and opening times have changed.
- Debbie (8/5): - We went to a wedding just up the road 10 minutes walk away so it was very convenient. The room was clean and bed comfortable. It as just been taken over, so the new owner was just settling in and getting it up and running, so unfortunately they was no food. But places to eat nearby, and the post office did great hot sandwiches in the morning Nothing
- Stephen (9/5): Great - Bed not made up with duvet cover.
