Guest Reviews
- John Andrew (8/5): - This was a very nice place to stay in Miyanoura. The breakfast and dinner service was unexpected. Both were interesting and satisfying. The steam bath was excellent after a day of hiking. The staff here were very nice and helpful.
- Ayaka (10/5): -

- eckars (8/5): Convenient Location but Spartan Conditions - My family and I stayed here for our first visit to Yakushima. As it was the middle of February, the facility had an off-season vibe and felt partially deserted. We enjoyed our stay, but the aging infrastructure and somewhat spartan conditions didn't lend themselves to comfortable accommodations. We may explore other options on the island when we visit next time.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good old traditional Japanese inn
- karen (8/5): - The location was good and the Japanese style room was large, futons were comfortable. The breakfast and dinner were elaborate - lots of small Japanese dishes, everything delicious.
- SARAH (10/5): Best experience of a Japanese hotel. - The best experience I’ve had at a hotel in Japan. I have a halal diet and the staff were able to cater for this in the half-board meals provided. The staff in the cafeteria were great and I felt like I had a lovely experience being fussed over (they treated everyone kindly). The front desk staff were great and spoke good English. There is a free shuttle service to the airport but you have to let them know in advance when your flight is (if you’re arriving, notify them by email as they don’t respond to messages made through hotels.com). The hotel is also next to an important bus stop that takes you direct to Shiratani Unsuiko and also takes you to the place you have to make a transfer for Yakusugi land. I also loved my tatami room which had a spacious bathroom.
- CHI WA BLACK (10/5):
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Verified traveler (4/5): -
- juliafliesaround (10/5): Serene ryokan with phenomenal staff - A traditional Japanese style ryokan in serene surroundings. Our room had a beautiful view of the river and greenery. In the day time, a table was set up with a traditional tea set, and when we got back in the evenings, it was transformed into the bedroom with our beds neatly made for us. The onsite onsen was a welcome facility after days of hiking.
This place is close to the Miyanoura Port, and right next to the bus stop that you need to get around the whole island. The people who run this place are incredible, they went out of their way to help us get around the place, and treated us like family. Highly recommend a stay here to unplug and unwind.
- gcincinnati (10/5): Helpful employees and a great location - We stayed 2 nights at the hotel and it was wonderful!
They accommodated 2 vegetarians in our group for breakfast and dinner and were able to help us by answering all of our questions about the island. Even if their English wasn't perfect, it was enough to help us find our way around the island!
The onsen is also great: a hot AND cold bath on a summer's day after a long hike was superior. We've been to a lot of hotels with onsens and this one is definitely one of the best we have seen.
Our room was nice and traditional and the futons were comfortable! They also had the AC running for us when we arrived, so it wasn't too hot when we got in.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Major bus stop and walkable to services - Got a bus stop right in front of the building which is great for catching early buses. Miyanoura is the busier area on the island but cant compare to cities, so its already quite good location with short walk to supermarket and restaurants in the area. We love the scenic views right from our room towards a river and mountain at the backdrop. Staff speaks limited English but sufficient to keep you served friendily. Note there are only stairs, ie not barrier free nor friendly for your fatigue legs after some long hikes.
- AndyouandI (10/5): Great Stay in a Traditional Room - Tatami mats on the floor, spacious main room with A/C, and a private bath. Very comfortable. Our sitting room overlooked the main road and the parking lot, but there are rooms that overlook the river. Friendly staff, and breakfast was available but not included in our room price. Our room was made up twice a day, first cleaned and all the bedding put away and setting up our sitting area, and then later in the day our bedding was set up for the night again. There’s a public bath on the premises. The bus to Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine stops right outside.
- fiona_kkL (8/5): Nice ryokan with river view - Tashiro Annex is a bit far from Miyanoura port but it is walkable distance about 15-20mins walk. I arrived Yakushima in the early morning. Firstly, I brought 3 days bus ticket cost 3000 yen, actually the 2-3 day bus ticket are the same price. Then, I went to the information centre just 5 mins aways from the Miyanora port you can have basic information you need. But all those information you can get it on the website. I have all planed before going to Yakushima.
I went to the Tashiro Annex to drop off our luggages first before go hiking. A bus stop is just right in front of the hotel, it is a perfect time to catch up the bus to Shiratani Usuikyo. After hiking and going back to the hotel, the staff told us, our room was ready and our luggages was taken to our rooms. The staff was very friendly and always willing to help. I stayed two nights there, rooms are typical Japanese Ryokan style with tatami. The room is clean and big.
The hotel has public hot bath and a sanar room, it is good to have a hot bath after a long day of hiking. They have a self laundry service for JPY200 wash and JPY200 for dry. Vending machine and self service paid coffee bar are in the lobby. There is an A-coop supermarket just 10 mins walk. I got off at A-coop bus stop when I returned to the hotel.
After a long day activity, you will be very tired and don’t want to go out to eat. I am glad that I booked the room with the meal plan. The breakfast and dinner was traditional Japanese meal and it was sooooooo good, the ladies service at the restaurant are very nice.
The hotel provied a free shuttle to Miyanoura port and airport. It is convenient if you are not driving. Although the bus schedule is not frequency, if you are well planned, you can go most of the sight seeing place by bus.
I stayed at Yakushimas for 3 day 2 nights in July 11-13, no raining at all, it was hot and sunny.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Nice river view but old and iover priced facility - The location, a view from the room (by the side of a beautiful river), and public bath are great. But there is no elevator and outside of the hotel looks very old. I think is it over priced for weekend. Also water was dripping badly inside closet so all of our FUTON were very wet. The guy came to fix it and took more than 30min. They should have given us another room or gave us a discount for this, BUT they did not. Very sorry for that.
- SungchulB1 (10/5): Great location for bus ride and shopping glossary - I stayed two nights there and visited Yakusugi and Shiratani Unsuikyo. Overall, Tashiro Benkan is probably the best place for travelers planning to visit these places, and I would revisit there for my next stay in Yakushima.
First, it is located right next to the last bus stop heading for two destinations both. Yakusugi trail using bus generally requires early bus ride and even a couple of more minutes to prepare is a big plus.
Next, A-coop mart is quite near from the premise, where I could pick up some nice onigiris, sushis, and other Japanese ready-to-eats, especially at the discounted price at night.
Rooms are typical Japanese Ryokan style with Tatami. No frills but there's no thing to complain during my stay. Hot spring Onsen is available but I didn't try. Staffs aren't English-friendly but they were always willing to help to get the right answer.
- Nimue85 (10/5): Nice ryokan and beautiful location - We stayed there last summer and booked this ryokan because of its location near Miyanoura port. The staff was very friendly and helped us for example by booking a taxi, even if their English was limited (but in this part of Japan not many people speak very much English).
Our room was big for Japanese standards, even the bath had the bathtub, the toilet and the sink in three separate rooms. The public bath was nice after a long day of hiking. A bus station is right in front of the hotel, the bus heads to Shiratani Unsuikyo, a great place for hiking with beautiful scenery.
- lilliea2014 (6/5): Bad hostel feeling. - The price was ok. The place was old and felt a bit worn and dirty. It was close to the harbor, a convenient store and some restaurants. The rooms was in japanese-style and the hotel offers a traditional bath for all their guests.
- cobieb (8/5): Good value Japanese style - I stayed in the Annexe building which does not face the river but the street. However, Yakushima streets are quiet enough. If your luggage is not heavy, you can walk from the ferry terminal but note, it is uphill - going back to the ferry is easier! The hotel has its own onsen (hot bath) that seemed popular with Japanese visitors. Ijust used the room, Japanese style, clean, good bathroom. Note that some one will come early in the evening to lay out you futon so if you are in your room make sure you are decent. No wi-fi in rooms but good reception in the lobby where there also is a small espresso coffee machine (with an hours jar for payment) which is quite nice. The hotel has a bus stop in front of it, and is close to the Vistor Information centre (which is very helpful).
- 664carolync (10/5): Amazing service and great view - Great location have a bust stop just in front of the hotel. Very convenient if you are not driving.
Excellent choice of restaurants and supermarket just ten mins away on foot.
Wonderful service. Even if most of the staff are not very good in English, they tried hard to help in every possible way.
If you haven't got any fancy hiking stuff, they have a wide range of hiking gear available for rental, from boots to waterproof clothes, hiking stick to backpacks. They have it in every size and style, all in ¥500 an item a day.
If you have paid for your breakfast, you won't missed a meal by going early day hiking. They will prepared your packed breakfast box for you at the desk. That's a huge breakfast, at least for an Asian girl like me, you don't need lunch at all!
After a long day hiking, you can enjoy a long hot bath in the hotel common bathroom just like the locals.
The room with the river view is simply serene. Nothing's more relaxing than sipping tea in your room, wearing yukata and enjoying the view.
- colinandmitch (10/5): Splendid ryokan with wonderful meals - This ryokan is conveniently located close to Miyanoura port and is a short drive from the wonderful Shiratani Unsuikyo hiking route. Our tatami room was really large and had a private toilet/bath as well as an indoor balcony room which overlooked the beautiful clear river - a gorgeous view.
Best of all was the amazing food - our stay included breakfast and dinner - and the meals comprised locally sourced seafood, vegetables and, of course, kuro buta (black/Berkshire pork). Every meal was utterly delicious. The futon in our room were prepared for us while we were enjoying our evening meal. The ryokan also offers a bento lunch box for a very reasonable 840¥, just place an order the night before (you need to say whether it is for breakfast or lunch). It was waiting for us at reception each day - fellow hikers on the Shiratani Unsuikyo trail were envious as we enjoyed our lunch!
All the staff were friendly and helpful and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Highly recommended.
- sirisakl (8/5): Good view and very convenient. - The hotel is located next to river and not far from Miyanoura port, there is a scenic view from the room if you stay in the room face to river. Room is large and clean and uou have your own bathroom. Didn't try dinner here but the breakfast is good and staffs are very kind and helpful even they cannot speak English.
The bus stop is at front of this hotel, so you can take to the ferry port, airport or Shiratani easily. There are super market and restaurant nearby so mo worry about food.
- SasukeSaratoga (10/5): Yakushima's finest - Yakushima is a hiking destination, and most of the hotels offer basic services catering to those who are not looking for luxury. Tashiro is different though: nothing is lacking!
Great for hiking. There is a bus stop at the hotel for direct buses to the most popular hiking areas, and the staff are happy to help. And on returning, there are the essential facilities to wash and dry wet clothes and shoes overnight.
Onsen baths with sauna - sadly not private for couples, but still very comfortable after a days hiking. As is traditional, there are separate baths for men and women.
The food is incredible - expect a full Japanese course every morning and evening, with locally sourced lobster, crab, sushi fish and mountain vegetables. Every day is different, and they will make sure you get a chance to try the famous Kagoshima black beef and the delicious fish cakes! For the early risers they will prepare a more modest lunch box breakfast to take to the mountain for no extra charge, and for 840¥ they will make up a lunch too. They even try to tailor the food to what you will be doing that day, so they might choose vegetables sourced from a specific mountain, or saltier ingredients for hot, long days (if you want)! Oh, and make sure you try the local Shochu - very good (but if you order nihonshu instead - sake as we call it - be aware that this signals you want rice and miso soup to come later in the meal, which can be a frustrating mistake after a hard day hiking...).
The rooms are Japanese style (though with Western toilets), and the staff prepare the room for tea and snacks when guests return from hiking - then tidy this away and prepare the (surprisingly comfortable) tatami beds during dinner. There are TVs, aircon and fridges in every room, along with a private shower. It's not a destination for romance, but the rooms are beautiful nevertheless.
The service in general was excellent, and if you are pushed for time the hotel has it's own souvenir shop with a decent selection at the same prices as the other tourist shops! Plus there was a good availability of snacks and coffee whenever they might be needed (even at 4am! A godsend for someone like me who needs caffeine to get started).
Tashiro is possibly the best hotel in Yakushima, and highly recommended for anyone who wants easy
