Dexter (10/5): Everything you want from a lodge in Nozawa. - This was hands down one of our best stays in Japan. Traditional Japanese style inn with western comforts. Perfect location for skiing to avoid crowds. Tucked away from the business but close enough to town. Taka and his wife were the most delightful hosts. The food and spa was wonderful. We will definitely be back!!! Nothing.

ZSA (9/5): A truly enjoyable skiing holiday - Location was excellent; near the travelator that takes you up to the Hikage gondola, and close to the village with plenty of shops and cafes. The hosts were very helpful and hospitable. The private onsen was really great after skiing. The room was rather small, and no en-suite bathroom although the hosts kept the shared facilities very clean.

Facilities are traditional & beautiful, breakfast sensational with Japanese or western choice, in house onsen (very hot & wonderful after a days skiing). It’s at the high end of town but close walk into the main area with activities and food options. But tricky to find in the windy streets especially when it’s snowing

Takanori (10/5): Excellent food and comfort away from the crowds - Location at the top corner of the town was quiet. There was a sotoyu (public bath) just up the street that was not busy when we went; we only shared it with some locals. Japanese breakfasts were amazing with large portions. The western food we saw on other tables appeared simple but good for those who are less adventurous with food. Unfortunately, we were not able to eat dinner at the hotel because the host was working at a ski race on the mountain, but that just seemed to be bad timing. This was not a problem because there are so many restaurants in Nozawa. Our room was spacious with couches, two futon areas and a private ensuite toilet. Futons were very comfortable. Yu Road access to the Hikage base area is less than a 5-minute walk from the hotel. Our room had a nice view of the rest of town. The host was very kind and allowed us to borrow towels after check out so that we could use the sotoyu after skiing before leaving Nozawa. We were also allowed to leave our luggage in a lobby storage area after check-out at no additional charge. There is only one shower room and one private bath room (with 3 bathing stalls) shared among the entire hotel. Reservations are needed between 3-10pm. It was not too difficult to reserve it, but an additional shower room would help with demand. Or 2 separate gender-specific shared baths would be helpful for this.

Tonina (10/5): Magic - This place and owners rate the highest in my world travels. Excellent internal designs, onsen open early am; food exceptional; all details so perfect and thoughtful. They even have (an add fee) an oxygen/compression chamber for use; loved the loaner gumboots for trekking around the knee high snow. Thank you Azegamikan , you deserve a 5 🌟 Everything was more than perfect. Just make sure if it's your first time you book a taxi well in advance (2-3 weeks) from Chuo Transit. We didn't know this, but the owner rescued us half way up the mountain as we were ruined, it was snowing etc

Lisa (9/5): A magical slice of Japan, great views and so close to the slopes. Highly recommend. - We were so pleasantly surprised with the calibre of this accommoation. We were worried about the "shared shower" but they operate a system to write down your 30 min slot and it is exceptionally clean and well equipped with body and hair cleaning products. There is also a separate "private onsen" which a whole family could easily use at the same time. It was a 6 minute walk to the 'Yu Road' travelator which leads to the Hikage Gondola. You can hire skiis there. Loads of cafes at Hikage too. The staff at Azegamikan were so amazing. Changed our towels and sheets regularly. And spoke a little English too! The Western style breakfasts were great value and delicious. The futon beds were super comfortable. We had the big room (sleeps 6) and the evening sunsets were spectacular over Nozawa. We definitely want to go back. Loved it!

Having designated areas for each guest room in the drying area would be nice. Have stayed at some other places in Nozawa that have that. Another guest who must have been in a rush packing ended up taking my neck warmer which is designed to magnetically attaches to my ski mask instead of theirs. Ended up having to buy a neck warmer as a result - was a bit annoying.

Nothing! We were in the basement so no view but that didn’t bother us. We liked being able to easily go in and out via basement/boot room exit and enjoyed being only room on the floor.

Highly recommend including breakfast at Azegamikan - you will not be disappointed. The family room is spacious for four people, and well equipped with tv, fridge and wifi. Lovely views over Nozawa Onsen from our room and from the dining room. Everything about our stay was perfect. The family were super helpful, and we loved learning about their legacy in the village. And the bonus was the location, only minutes walk to the Yu Road, which was particularly convenient for my 80 yr old father.
Julia (10/5): The perfect family ski hotel - This hotel is an absolute gem. Do not hesitate to book your skiing holiday here. The rooms are extremely comfortable. The bathrooms are immaculate and equipped with everything you need for your stay. We loved the private onsen on site, the perfect place to relax after a day of skiing. The staff could not have been more helpful and welcoming - thank you for all your help, including organising our lift passes and sending out luggage to our next location. Do not miss the incredible Japanese breakfast. Every day was a different set and the whole family loved every dish. The best was to start the day. The location of the hotel is excellent. It’s only a short walk to the Yu moving road. We rented our skis at Olive ski rental and were able to leave our boots and skis at the bottom of the lift every day. We can’t wait to come back to Azegamikan and Nozawa Onsen - it was the best place for a family ski trip.

Fiona (9/5): A wonderful week in Nosawa Onsen - We are a family of 5 who stayed for 7 nights in early January. Our room was immaculately clean and the beds were the most comfortable I’ve ever slept in when travelling away from home. This is traditional Japanese accommodation and I was worried about the shared shower facility but it was no problem at all. We enjoyed a superb breakfast and dinner experience and we highly recommend - come with an appetite! Also, if your are hiring ski equipment head to Olive Rentals who are at top of the Yu Road walkway which is very close to Azegamikan (let them know that’s where you are staying for discount).All round excellent facilities operated by a family who are wonderful hosts.

Ellen (8/5): Close to Yu road and comfortable stay - The room we had was very big and well equipped with mini fridge, kettle, seating area etc. it was very comfortable to relax in after a day of skiing. Was super close to the Yu road but if you’re renting gear, then to utilise the Yu road you should rent from hikage station not nagasaka as we did! There was a sheet to book either the shower or bath to use at half an hour increments. We were there in a time where it wasn’t too busy but I could see this being annoying if it was super full.

Mads0801 (9/5): Superb - This was a cute and cosy place to stay. The view of the village from the accommodation was amazing. There is a wonderful onsen located inside the accommodation which we used everyday! The loft style room was great because we had room to put our suitcases and sit about downstairs. It's very close to Yu road which takes you to the ski fields. The staff member who checked us in was very helpful! Would definitely stay here again. The bathroom were shared. This wasn't really an issue as everything was very clean but just something to keep in mind. The price was a bit expensive as well.

Rachel (8/5): Great location and friendly staff - The location is perfect to trot up to the slopes. Beautiful spot for sunrise and sunset is immaculate over the town. The private onsen is great to relax in! Having the downstairs room with a bathroom basically to yourselves was great. The shared shower facilities were easy to navigate. The staff were very friendly and even offered to pick us up and drop us off to the bus but we preferred the little hike - be prepared it’s pretty steep. Unfortunately the heater in the family room on level one still smells extremely gas like. It was unbearable but thankfully the wonderful owner bought us a bar heater to keep warm. It did the job and wasn’t too hot or too cold.

Gail (10/5): Highly recommended, close to the ski lifts, great food, comfortable lodgings, and friendly. - The breakfasts were exceptional! Fresh, local healthy food. Traditional Japanese breakfast. Varied from day to day. Excellent service. One night we were offered a dinner in the hotel, which is not offered every night. It was one of the best meals we had during our 16 days in Japan! Kaiseki, with an emphasis on local ingredients. And very inexpensive. It would have been fun to have a bigger onsen experience on site. Small room with a maximum capacity of two. But there are many public onsen in town.
Yen (10/5): Comfortable stay for a family ski trip - Short walk to Yu Road, which gives easy access to the slopes and Hikage ski base. Room and facilities spacious, clean and very comfortable, even soundproof. They have an onsen that we can reserve and use privately, and bath supplies to take out if we wish to use one of the many public onsens. Owners and staff very nice and accommodating. Even though we didn't speak any Japanese, we managed to get by with Google translate. It is located on one side of the main town, so a bit more of a walk to get to the other end, but everything is within walking distance anyway.

Streff (10/5): Great location with friendly staff and amazing amenities. - Location was amazing! It was an easy walk to the walking carpet to get to the gondola and all the restaurants downtown. The private bath was perfect after a long day of skiing. The staff was very helpful and the breakfast was amazing.

Jade (9/5): Fabulous hotel in Nozawa Onsen. - It was comfort and clean . The room had a lovely tradition Japaneses setting. I initially worried about the shared bathroom before we arrived but the hotel booking system worked well and the private Onsen was great. We also had a private toilet in our room. I would recommend this hotel.

Evans (10/5): Highly recommend. - We loved this property. It was our first ryokan experience and we thought it was wonderful. Super clean, easy access to the main parts of town and ski slopes. The staff were so friendly and helpful- they drove us to the Nagasaki lifts and also to the bus stop on our last day. Shared bathroom facilities are super clean and easy to book.

Marcella (9/5): Superb - I stayed 5 wonderful, comfortable nights. Rooms were warm, the japanese breakfasts and dinners were absolutely amazing (something different every day). It was a short walk to the escalators up to the gondola and I had everything I needed (drying room, boots to borrow for walking to onsen, umbrellas etc). Shared bathrooms were pretty easy to navigate. Excellent value!
