Guest Reviews
- Guy (10/5): Japanese Experience - This was a once in a lifetime experience..the house and garden were beautiful in every way, the breakfast was excellent, authentic and tasty. The location was great…so close to restaurants and shops.
It was a fantastic Japanese experience.
Thank you
- Michał (10/5): Rewelacyjne miejsce!!!! - Rewelacyjne miejsce! Bardzo polecam, super kontakt z obiektem, dobre wifi, super lokalizacja. Miejsce, którego poszukiwaliśmy, aby poczuć klimat tradycyjnej Japonii. Wszystko było super! BRAK!!!
- Gozde (10/5): - We had a wonderful stay. The hosts were kind, helpful, and very welcoming throughout our visit. The home itself was a beautiful traditional Japanese house—clean, tidy, and full of charm. We would happily stay here again and highly recommend it to others.
- Wen (9/5): - It is an easy walk to the nijo castle and right next to this amazing pedestrian zone/a long street of many many lovely restaurants, grocery stores, specialty shops etc. So easy to get beautiful food and get to touristy spots. We loved the amazing villa. The only downside is the way the windows are essentially means no curtains which woke up kids early in the morning (although everyone was excited to explore so it didnt really matter lol).
- Wan Chi (10/5): -
- Nathaniel (7/5): Great look & location; terribly uncomfortable. - The look and feel of the place was amazing, well equipped, great bathrooms and shower. All bedding was uncomfortable, for the price you would think something more comfortable would be in the unit. Good sleep is the most important part of an accommodation. This place was all style and no comfort. Also outdated TV so not possible for us to stream anything.
- Leigh (10/5): This beautiful and unique property was an excellent base to explore Kyoto. - The unique historical Japanese building was a beautiful place to stay. Nothing at all to not like about this stay. It was exactly as described.
- Mario (10/5): -
- James (9/5): Wonderful property in a convenient location. - Wonderful property in a convenient location. Nothing, I would consider staying again next time in Kyoto.
- Yong Ray (9/5): It was really nice and worth the price, but the air-con situation is confusing. - Host was there waiting for us already, explained everything quite clearly. The accommodation itself was very beautiful, very classy and functional as well. I liked the design, the toilets were nice, the living room as well. I didn't like that the room for the tatami beds was so stuffy and warm. I couldn't get much circulation despite there being an opening at the top to the air conditioning from the other room, and I treid using the fan provided/opening the window but it was insufficient. The air conditioning was also incredibly confusing, it was annoying that it kept reading out the commands given, and it was nonsensical because changing the fan speed made no difference, nor does changing the temperature. It seemed to only have two modes: barely on, or blizzard mode (fan speed at maximum, super loud and making the room very cold)
Prima!
- Hassan (10/5): Would definitely come again. - Everything was great, we wished if we could’ve stayed more at this amazing townhouse. None.
- Joshua (9/5): -
- Cunningham (10/5): No-brainer if you want a centrally located place with authentic Japanese look and feel! - Host met us and walked through all the property rules and features. Extremely thorough, polite, and professional. Breakfast was outstanding. Location perfectly central to Kyoto and a great jumpoff point.
- Pavarun (7/5): Good mood when you need local Japanese home experience. But the price quite expendive compare with all house facility. - Outdoor garden , living area with the garden view and entrance hall really traditional. They have only one shower room in the house.
- Meruyert (10/5): -
- Eran Koren (10/5): - Great location! The house is big and we'll kept. The living area and small garden are beautiful and look in reality like the photos. We were concerned at first about sending luggage as it's not a hotel with a front desk. But it was super easy and in general they we're very responsive and answerd immediately when we texted. Internet was a little slow. But usable.

- Gabor (10/5): A relaxing stay in a cosy Ryokan in Nakagyo, Kyoto - The team was very helpful organizing the key despite us arriving late in the evening. The team was looking after options for food that comply with our food intolerance problems. Even though it was a difficult challenge as traditional Japanese cuisine generally contains many components we need to avoid, the Kuraya representatives looked after options in other places and provided the ordered traditional breakfast with clear description of ingredients so we could taste many delicious items and avoid problems.
The house was nice and clean fitted out with everything we needed, offering us a bit of feeling how the original life style could have been.
The house was not exactly in the center but was in a quiet area close to a market street and Nijo Castle. In relation with traffic, the train, different bus lines were in a few minutes walk. Nothing to mention, we were really satisfied!
- Bertrand (10/5): - Expérience d'une maison traditionnelle Un peu plus exigu que ne le laissent penser les photos
- Calum (9/5): Brilliant - We loved the cultural style of the place and were well taken care of by the staff
- jamie (8/5): It a good hotel, felt very comfortable and clean - Good location
- Sabina (10/5): -
- Paul (10/5): - gorgeous post and beam workshop reimagined as a residence; close to covered market; quiet side street; traditional Japanese design and fit-out. Rare 3 bedroom, 2 bath rental

- Joy (10/5): Exceptional - We loved the thoughtful touches that made Kuraya Nanseicho feel like our home away from home in Kyoto. N/A
- Shelley (10/5): Exceptional - This was my favourite place I stayed in the whole of Japan! So beautiful and welcoming and wonderful. Couldn't have loved it more.
- Maria (10/5): Wonderful experience. Amazing Kuraya team and ryokan. - The ryokan is an architectural and sensitive experience beyond words. The neighbourhood in which is located is real and gives you a sense of the place. The team at Kuraya was above and beyond, just wonderful, one of our best experiences so far with booking. I'm counting the days to return. Congratulations and thank you for everything. Nothing. Everything was perfect in our stay.
- Angelo (7/5): Great for a local experience - Beautiful property, quiet neighbourhood. Suitable if you want to experience living in local neighbourhoods and traditional spaces as such for experience. In terms of the layout, not super practical. Suitable for a small family or couple rather than a group of adults. There is one bathroom on the main floor through the living room area. All bedrooms are upstairs but two rooms are pretty much connected, so no separate privacy if you need it.
About 30-40 minutes by train to popular locations.
- Victoria (10/5): Wonderful little Ryokan in a convenient location! - Very quaint little house situated right next to a shopping strip (with restaurants and a supermarket + pharmacy), conveniently located within minutes via foot to the Nijo subway station. As we travelled with family, it was wonderful having a sitting area where we could all hang out. Kitchen was also nicely equipped for simple cooking. Bathroom was very nicely equipped. All in all a great Japanese experience! Would have been nice to have simple condiments on hand (i.e. oil, salt, soya sauce)!
- Yiming (10/5): - Such an unforgettable Japanese experience in the heart of Kyoto! The traditional house is well kept and equipped, offers us a very comfortable place for living. The place is centrally located, close to JR and metro stations. Close by there are plenty of shopping and dining opportunities, all very local. Communication with the ower was easy and responsive. Highly recommended and I will stay here again next time!
- Caitie (9/5): Superb - This was a charming traditional Japanese house, but it was warm and accommodating and perfect for our group of 5! There were thoughtful details like toiletries and yukatas available, along with a small kitchen and washer/dryer.
Perhaps the best thing was the location- a train station was only minutes away and the quiet street connected to a great covered shopping street that provided groceries and restaurants as well. This was fine for our group but the rooms are small and you are in close quarters so just be prepared to share if you have a larger group.
- Jjmamee (8/5): Very good -
- Ronnie (10/5): Excellent - Staff gave personalised checkin in person. NIL
- Arndrea (9/5): Superb -
- Olia (9/5): Just like in the pictures - + it is just like in the pictures - it is nicely rennovated, has a sense of both "old" and "new" - with comfort
+ the tea available was super good and there were some extra sweets also of good quality!
+ there is space to put legs down under the low table
+ spacious bath area and you can see the garden while taking bath ^^ and they provided us with kind of yukata too
+ and we liked the lock - no need to carry around keys - on the second floor there are two rooms and there is no partition between them in the upper part - which means there is no obstacle for light and sounds
- when we arrived, it was too hot (meaning they made it too hot before our arrival)
- the stuff that met us was not japanese, so it spoiled our impression a little bit - i mean, we arrive to kyoto and japan to interact with japanese huh :) (and we speak japanese too)
- would be nice to have some low light in the living room - because the main one is too bright
- Jordi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rika (10/5): Quiet Japanese Home Experience - Great traditional Japanese home with modern conveniences. Very quiet and not far to many sights.
- Cyril (10/5): Authentic and comfortable Japanese machiya house. Fantastic experience! - Authentic, traditional, clean, comfortable, quiet, etc. All good!
- Mali (7/5): Genuine Japanese experience - The house was clean, shower and facilities were excellent.
Washing machine was very easy to use. Wifi was not stable so it was hard to impossible at times to work during our stay there.
This is a traditional Japanese house, I think we were not 100% sure when booking what it meant so for us some of the facilities were challenging (sleeping on the floor on futton mattress, dining and working on the floor around a low table).
The location was also not perfect - although there is a train station 5 minutes walk from the place, but if you look for the tourist spots (Nishi market and shopping area), this would take 15 minutes by bus.
Bottom line - A nice experience but I think that it is much overpriced.
- Jimena (9/5): Super nice house - The house looks very nice with everything you can need. Very big (we were 6 and fitted perfectly) The rooms upstairs are connected so you can hear everything from one room to the other.
- Ewa (10/5): Exceptional - Fabolous city house close to station.
It has unique character.
My family loved it
- Saori (10/5): - 駅近なのに静かで過ごしやすかった。部屋や風呂が広く、庭の眺めも良かった。
- Bridget (6/5): Charming property in a great location. - Wonderful freshly prepared breakfast every morning Wished there were at least one chair per person in the living area....
- Maywald (8/5): Lovely traditional stay in Kyoto - Location is convenient with some great local restaurants nearby. House is spacious and the stay was a wonderful traditional experience. For three guests there were only two chairs. That meant one of us was always sitting on the floor without any comfort - which is difficult for middle aged western tourists. I would suggest the owners incorporate some more comfortable seating (at least enough chairs for the number of guests).
- Stephanie (10/5): Exceptional - A work of art
Close to everything.
So clean and comfortable.
A very unique experience.
They made everything so easy. Lots of extra gifts. Love it! My whole family of 8 .we are going to stay again when we come back!
- Mette (10/5): So Nice! My family was so thriller with this experience. - Everything. It was so Nice and Authentic. Nice rooms, garden and dinning room incl. bathtub with look to the garden. Relaxation in japanese kimonos in japanese surroundings! Dont want to change anything. Choose another place if you want af combi japanese/ western experience.
- Federica (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ismail (8/5): Very good - Japanese style living & location very convenient Would have liked a few more chairs near the garden area
- Elijah (10/5): Very comfortable and the place looks amazing. - The design of the house and it’s very spacious. None
- Lee (10/5): Exceptional -
- Joshua (10/5): Exceptional -
- Serene (9/5): Superb -
- Madhavi (10/5): Exceptional - Old charm of Japan Nothing
- John (10/5): Exceptional - Wonderful interior design and delivered breakfast. Good location in residential neighborhood
- Aity (10/5): Exceptional - In a quiet neighborhood with many hidden gems to uncover.
It gives you feeling living like locals.
Train station is within walking distance.
The owner is very kind to help arrange forwarding luggage to the next hotel.
- Raegan (10/5): We will be back for our next trip to Japan, everything was perfect. Thank you again! - This home is worth every penny to stay in. It’s just a short, few minute walk from the train station and surrounded by lots of amazing food and shopping options. When you walk into the home you are taken back by how beautiful it is. Every detail of the decor, linens, chairs, were simply stunning. Honestly, I’ve never seen such a lovely and welcoming space. I only wish we would have known how perfect it would be, we regret only staying for 2 nights. Thank you for leaving tea for us as well. We will be back!
- Weijie (10/5): Great! - Interior is beautiful Area is quite residential, not easy to get to from Kyoto station only one train route.
- Keith (10/5): - Excellent property right in the middle of Kyoto. If you want to be immersed in the neighborhood in a traditional yet historic property this is the one. We traveled from USA with 7 people (3 adults and 4 kids aged 9-13). 15 minute walk to Nijo castle and 5 minute walk to Nijo station (which is 10 minutes to Kyoto station or Arashiyama). There is also a massively long pedestrian commercial street a stone's throw away that offers countless local dining and shopping experiences. We chose to have breakfast included which was also neat as it is delivered but traditional. The bath is something to experience too so take the time to learn how to operate and fill it. This was a great home base for our 5 days in Kyoto thanks!
- Frederic (10/5): - Great property! Staff was welcoming and friendly. I would definitely recommend this accommodation to anyone visiting the area.
- Henry (10/5): Exceptional -
- Trudy (10/5): Oustanding. - Awesome traditional home, excellent location, quiet street, loved the immersive experience of staying in a Japanese house. Hosts were great, so easy to deal with. Thank you! Extra pillows available.
- James (10/5): Exceptional -
- Shamsa (8/5): Very good -
- Anthi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Li (10/5): Exceptional - Machiyo is definitely worth experiencing, they did a great job renovating the place.
