Guest Reviews
- Benjamin (10/5): Cozy vibe down in the lounge area and comfy beds! - The staff and facilities were amazing and the dinner options were also amazing!

- Emma (10/5): Warm, confortable and perfect for our large group. - Power Temple was warm, comfortable and had everything we needed. The staff were friendly and extremely helpful. The rooms and beds were comfortable and the common area was perfect for our group of ten. Importantly, one of our group had a skiing injury and the owners and staff could not have been more accommodating to our needs. I highly recommend this property as somewhere to stay where you get value for money and you are welcome and looked after. Thank you! The property was what we expected so there was nothing that we were concerned about.
- Benjamin (8/5): Temper Your Expectations - Outstanding Staff
We had an amazing holiday at The Powder Temple, largely due to the exceptional staff and the welcoming atmosphere they created. I want to be very clear from the outset: the staff made this place what it was.
Hannah, Jack, Freya, and the two Swedish guys were outstanding hosts throughout our stay. Their hospitality was genuine, warm, and consistent. Nothing was too much trouble, the property was always kept clean and tidy, and the overall vibe they created was fantastic. Chef Freya cooked great food, the two showers that were working were reliably hot, and having a bar on site was a nice bonus (although drinks were pretty exy). It’s important to temper expectations when it comes to the physical property and amenities. While this is on the cheaper end of accommodation, the facilities are very run down and, in some cases, felt a little unsafe. There were exposed wires (I’m not sure if they were live or not), a large heavy door in the dry room fell on me at one point, and the new dining area had multiple roof leaks. At one stage there weren’t enough buckets to manage the leaks, and unfortunately my little fella slipped on the wet floor. Also to note, there are a few odour issues getting around the place.
The place definitely needs a lot of attention and maintenance. This accommodation is best suited to people who are regular campers — it’s really more like glamping than lodge-style accommodation.
- Leilani (7/5): Was a good stay - You get what you pay for. The rooms were big and bed was comfy. Staff were helpful. Rooms were not cleaned once for a 6 night stay. You are also not allowed to bring food or drink into the rooms. There were also bugs in the room and no body wash or conditioner or shampoo in the bathroom.
- Audrey (8/5): Huge thank you to the welcoming staff of Powder Temple! We had a lovely stay. -
- Whitney (8/5): Good location, nice staff. Close to all ski resorts. -
- Gavin (1/5): Bad - The staff were very polite and helpful. There were dozens of pests found throughout the hotel (ants and stinkbugs). There was an issue with the shower plumbing which caused the 1st floor and the shower rooms to flood eveytime any guest took a shower. This occured every single day. Everytime we would step out of our room we would be stepping out into a puddle. Also this caused the entire 1st floor to smell of mold, rot, and sewage as the drains would back up. Additionally, hot water was unavailable for a day due to the hot water heater giving out.
- Paige (1/5): I would not stay here again. - Nothing. The beds were extra small twin beds, and rock hard. Almost like a child's bed. The property charged an exorbitant amount of money over what a Hostel style hotel should charge. Additionally, they said that breakfast would be included and the kitchen was closed. There was said that dinner would be available and the kitchen was closed. When we arrived, the person checking us in asked for showers to be kept to 30 seconds as the bathrooms would otherwise flood. Signs on the bathroom doors said to keep showers to a minimum and that if you were looking for more bathroom time you could go to an onsen and pay for a shower. Additional signs around the property also said that they would charge a 1000 yen fee if you were found to have outside food or beverage on the property.
The bathrooms were also co-ed, which there was never any mention of. I was brushing my teeth very early in the morning to beat the crowds and a man came out of the bathroom stall wearing nothing but his underwear. This could be very alarming for someone that was not expecting this to be the case.
I would not stay here again with the lack of transparency. Additionally, this property should not be charging well over $100 US dollars per night for accommodations of this nature.
- David (6/5): Pleasant -
- Yen (3/5): Poor - Under renovation. Flooding shower, sewage smell. Small rooms.
- Madeline (8/5): Overall we really enjoyed our stay here and will be back. - The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. They were always helpful and gave us lots of good recommendations for ski resorts, food and bars. Staff created a very homely vibe.
- Breanna (8/5): - My partner and I had a nice stay at Powder Temple. Affordable accomodation that is walkable to popular areas of Hakuba and also has bus stations to town and ski resorts out the front. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful with check in/out, tips and tricks about the area and just up for a chat. The accommodation is currently still in maintenance in some areas of the building but still a great place to stay to experience all the Hakuba has to offer. Thanks for a wonderful stay Powder Temple!
- Oosterhuis (10/5): Exceptional - Great staff on site! Kohi and Brandon really made the trip showing us the best powder runs in Hakuba.
- Steven (8/5): Very competitive priced option in Hakuba! Wonderful staff and owners. - Breakfast was great! Free with your room and buffet style. The staff was helpful throughout the entire stay!
Bonus - the hotel is partnered with Rhythm Sports for easy rental pickup and drop off for skis and snowboards. Not the most modern or up-to-date place you can stay. Shower curtain constantly blew onto your body due to how flimsy it was. Each night we had to deal with a stinkbug in our room as well. Not ideal, but not a deal breaker.
- Guo-dong (8/5): Very good -
- Oliver (4/5): - To many from the hotel staff lived there as theire were any guests.
- Fiona (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing location and friendly staff
- Douglas (10/5): Amazing staff and location, comfortable - It was an excellent stay. The staff and owner were super accomodating, couldnt have been nicer. Its super nice and comfy inside, with good facilities for drying gear and storing boards. The location being right next to the bus stop makes it one of the best locations in Hakuba. This is top choice accomodation if you want to snowboard in Hakuba.
- Brittany (7/5): good place if you’re looking for somewhere cheap and friendly but you’re not too precious. - Staff were super friendly. Even gave us a lift to get rental gear and also to the bus terminal the next morning. Yummy breakfast every morning was a bonus! It was quiet in the bedrooms at night. Bedroom didn’t feel like it had been vacuumed in a while
- Ellen (6/5): Pleasant - The Powder Temple was under renovations when we went. It wasn't too bothersome but should have been disclosed. Once those are done this will be a very cool spot! Generally a kind of loud place to stay.
- Matt (2/5): Deceptive, dirty and dangerous. Avoid - This is the worst hotel I’ve stayed in in Japan and a very disappointing stay. First, it looks nothing like the photos. It is undergoing a renovation that is half done and seems abandoned. Hazardous chemicals are stored in the hallways. (I have photos where a large container clearly marked as hazardous and flammable is being stored in the hallway). The high staircase out front has no guard rail and is unsafe. Parts of the floors are stripped and not finished. The interior staircase is stripped and unfinished. On top of that the hotel was not very clean. The bathrooms were not up to Japan standards. The ski storage room has trash about the floor. There was no soap in the bathroom and we had to request it. The staff was the only bright spot as they were kind and helpful. But otherwise this place is not safe and poor quality.
- Brown (8/5): Very good -
- Patrick (1/5): Stay away, the state of the place is a dump! - We did not like anything from this property nor the customer service. Everything! From pickup to leaving was overwhelmingly disappointing.
Pickup: Staff were 20 minutes late to pick us up from the train station, even though they were only a 2 minute drive away. The pick up vehicle was tiny and filled with rubbish. The staff member who picked us up wore what appeared to be pyjamas and her crocs (shoes). It looked like she had just woken up, even though it was 4pm.
Check in: We didn't get checked in properly. We were shown our room. We were only vaguely told where the bathroom and toilet were located, but we were never taken to them. We were told we would "figure it out".
We looked around the room and found a half empty tube of sex lube and used toilet roll in the drawers next to the bed. The room was very dusty. Our allergies and asthma immediately flared up. The pillows on the bed had several different coloured hairs on them. Long and short hairs of different colours. How long had it been since these pillows were actually washed? Our booking was for a shared bathroom toilet. The toilet/shower on our level was located in another room, which was empty at the time. The first thing I noticed was the half-empty packet of toilet paper sitting in the middle of the room. The toilet, sink, mirror, and shower/bath were disgusting. I've seen public toilets cleaner than this.
We went for a 3kms walk to the ski rental shop, during which I was still very itchy and found it difficult to breathe.
During the walk, we spoke to bookings.com. They informed us that they would contact the owner of Powder Temple. Upon returning to the property, the "manager" was busy celebrating his birthday rather than talking to us. We had to interrupt the festivities to talk about any communications with the owner and bookings.com. The manager stated that he had spoken to the owner and that we would get a full refund. Continued next section------------- We were invited to stay there for our duration for free. The fact that we didn't should tell you something about the state of the place. Who would turn down a free week of accommodation in the snow?
We packed up all our stuff and frantically searched for a new property to relocate to. This was all at the end of a long day, having left home at 7:00AM and having travelled to Hakuba, it was by this time about 9:00 PM. We eventually found a new place to move to and while we waited to be picked up by the new accommodation, another staff member came down to the reception area. She asked if we were okay. I told her this place is disgusting and that my asthma had worsened and that my oxygen level was low and that my skin was inflamed and very itchy. Her unsympathetic response was, "Goodluck".
Throughout the establishment there were no bins. There was rubbish and dust everywhere. The unfinished renovations were apparently due to an unscrupulous tradesman who had decided not to finish his job. Still, while that might explain the loose tiles in the lounge room and other half-baked things, it does not explain why there were no bins, dust, rubbish and equipment such as vacuum cleaners and other cables absent mindedly left in the corridors.
We have not received any direct apology from the owner. Instead, the owner sent an obviously depersonalised copy/paste message on our last day in Hakuba, which asked us to not post any negative reviews. Instead of accepting responsibility, the owner blames the contractor for everything. This place is a complete joke. The reviews are absolutely false. No one of sound mind could stay there and consider it to be clean or suitable, except, of course, they are cave-dwelling troglodytes with scant regard for sanitation.
Due to word count, this review was shortened. Regrettably, photos were only taken frantically while waiting to be picked up.
- Simon (7/5): Good -
- Mahesh (4/5): if you go to only ski, you don’t need any ther facilities this play Mach you.but if you go to not only ski you don’t go - I like loction andOtherwise there is nothing.and owner help me to cancel one of my room.(cancel policies very tight) rooms are not cleaned.,pillows not washed, door locks not working, when I go to check in there was no one in reception ,they wrote a note and leave and one of gust help us to find our rooms, check in time 9-23.30 we went there in 19.30. and they haven’t any phone number in japan. if you want to contact them only way is massage.and provided phone number work but not answer.and they haven’t any responsible person, next day morning I complain our room door lock problem and they said sorry.and I ask fixed or can your exchange any other rooms-they said we can’t do anything.
breakfast:- not good .first day bread only we ask butter again sorry we don’t
staff :-friendly
promises:- under construction
bathroom:- good
toilet:- only one don’t see any other : I think new one under construction
room price:- cheap and cannot be canceled.( before 2 month you stay can be cancel)
if you think your vacation stay here think twice.
- Jonty (6/5): Renovations currently underway - Couldn’t speak more highly off the staff - made our stay really enjoyable and were super accomodating. Good location and reasonable value. But the current condition of the hotel is nothing like the photos. We were completely surprised to find the renovations currently underway in the hotel. Then the associated inconveniences like issues with heating, plumbing, electricity and the flooring. Both my friends slipped / cut their foot on the stairs that are currently unfinished. Overall, still a very reasonable option but expect some inconvenience without any notice from the owner.
- Lina (8/5): Very good - Friendly staff and good location!
- David (8/5): Snow Shuttle out front, local restaurants nearby, great hospitality. - Even thought Powder Temple is in the process of renovation ( delayed from Covid), Jake and Callum showed over the top hospitality, offering to pick us up and drop off to get snow gear and transport. There was a good vibe. The snow shuttle is right out front and there are 7 eleven and two lovely local restaurants a short walk away. We most probably wouldn't have found these ( Haris and Garlic) without them sharing this local knowledge. Due to renovations the heating was Kerosine based which took me back to my childhood.:). This place has so much potential and should be great when the renos have finished.
- Charis (10/5): really cool little budget hotel close to the centre of the village. - my 3 teen daughters and I stayed at Powder Temple for the past 4 days and we had a really great time. The owner and hotel staff were Australians and went out of their way to make sure we had a really nice time, even dropping us to the ski lifts each morning. The hotel is 5 minutes in a taxi from the centre of Hakuba so we just took a taxi home each evening which was $15 with 4 people and 4 skis. there was a 7/11 5 minutes walk away and the hotel had a really cosy bar / lounge area where we chatted to other guests and the staff each evening. I’m so glad I stayed there with my girls we had such a relaxed and nice time! thank you again Jake and Callum. nothing - it was better then I expected for the price we paid.
- Monica (10/5): - This property was so convientiently located and comfortable to stay in. Thier contintental breakfast was above and beyond and i dont know how i am going to go back to reality without my daily crossiant. The beds were super comfy and had a bar that we could access whenever we wanted. The Valley snow buses stop right out the front so we didnt have to walk too far in our snowboarding gear. Jake, the owner, was super helpful and friendly. We have already booked in for 23/24 season.
- Ryan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dermot (9/5): Superb - The owner, Jake, couldn’t have been more friendly and accommodating. Picked up and dropped up several times in our short stay. The lodge is in need of a few jobs done at the time of writing, but this is reflected in the pricing. It was one of the most reasonably priced lodges over the new year 2023, so if you’re looking for a cheap, clean room to sleep, friendly staff, good breakfast and easy access to the shuttle bus, you’ll be fine here! Looking forward to another stay!
- Wing Lok (10/5): - All staffs there are very nice and helpful.
- Elsa (10/5): - Good vibes, very helpful and nice staffs!Don't hesitate to stay here!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great staff and awesome hang out area. The room I was in was rustic but the price is right and I am not complaining. Good location to walk around Hakuba.
- Stephen (10/5): Right at bus stop for several local slopes - The lodgers about a 20 min walk to Ecoland, where all the eatery’s etc are. Although we were a little way from this, we were very happy with this location. The bus to the slopes in right outside, the stop is at this hotel, so fantastic, accommodation was good, we are a family of 4 and stayed in the apartment. Coming from Sydney we were slightly cold at first but the manager provided us with extra heating, so nil issues. Breakfast was basic, but enough and they made an effort most days with a little extra something ie pancake. There is dinner at the lodge for else there are places to eat that are close by. I would recommend this lodge to anyone and I would stay again. There is a 7/11 close by too
- kara (8/5): Great Stay - Powder temple was the perfect vibe , location was awesome with bus stop right out the front, however was a 10-15min walk to get to bars etc. Service was awesome and overall a great place to stay
Only negative was that breakfast was pretty average just bread and condiments or cereal and yogurt, don't expect a hot breakky.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- CHIH-YUAN (10/5): Good stay - Friendly welcome and environment introduction, the public living room is huge and the bed were soft. The shuttle bus station just in front of hotel very convient.
- Andrew (10/5): Great place, great people. - The staff are wonderful people, helpful, knowledgable, and kind. Thanks so much for your help. :)
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Clean rooms, friendly staff who give good tips on the best snow runs. Wi-Fi is quick and strong.
- yi (8/5): Nice hotel cheap price friendly staff - The host of the hotel is very friendly and welcoming. He picked me from the train station. and upgraded me to a room with on suite bath room. The room is on the small side but is very standard in Japan. The price is very cheap and bus stop is nearby.
