- Lesley (7/5): Great stopover. - Breakfast was excellent, the staff helpful and friendly, location excellent, parking was good, dinner was good. Our air conditioning/ heating didn't work so we had a fan heater. Our bathroom was very tight on space. Mum's bathroom was huge but cold.

- Katie (10/5): Simply outstanding! - Our stay at the Crown and Thistle was outstanding! All the staff were friendly and attentive. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Our room was luxurious and the food in their restaurant was delicious. Also, as we were part of a group of transgender women with our partners, we were pleased to see that the Crown and Thistle is part of the Ask Clive scheme which helps to make LGBTQIA+ people safer. All their staff treated our group members with the utmost respect and none of us were misgendered by them - which sadly, happens far too often these days. They made us all feel welcome, valued and valuable. We are already planning to return next year! Thank you so much to all the staff at the Crown and Thistle. Nothing. It was perfect!

- PhilnPat (4/5): Not the best - Room 2 was very dark and dinghy with very poor lighting nowhere to sit and being on the front very noisy. We had breakfast quite late but everything except the undercooked eggs were obviously cooked we before orders were placed service however was good nice pleasant staff. We stayed with relatives for a family funeral having the funeral tea there in the barn in my opinion it was an embarrassing display of sandwiches on dry cheap bread with the tiniest amount of filling nd selection luke warm tea and coffee a very poor show. Overall not a good show however staff were good and attentive so the problems are with the way the place is run wouldn't stay again

A brilliant breakfast, lots of tasty, high quality products. Unfortunately the bed physically shook every time something bigger than a small car drove past which woke me up multiple times during the night. Not the noise of vehicles but the actual physical shaking of the bed when they went past. It got particularly bad at 5am when the traffic picked up. When I flagged this to staff they didn’t seem surprised. For £166 for one night, I expected to be able to sleep. May just be the room I stayed in (12) as other reviews are great.

Very handy for the river walk and they happilly organised lunch for a dozen of my friends. Best place to stay in or around Abingdon nice to have a car park in the centre of town but very tight spaces and not easy to find

There were lots of breakfast options and the meals in the restaurant were tasty. Two minor things in the room. It would be nice if there was a table and two comfy chairs. Secondly, a chest of drawers would be useful.

The food was excellent, and the service was prompt and friendly. The hot water took a long time to come, if at all. In the morning it was just lukewarm after running for 5 minutes.

- IAN (8/5): Good food, Pizza's good, beds comfy. - Great food, has its own pizza oven and they are very good, breakfast is also good, plenty of choice. Room choice can sometimes be pot luck, ie small or large. If you get a room on an upper floor then the stairs can be a little tricky with a larger case. However its an old building and a little quirky, so although it can be tricky with the stairs beds are comfy, rooms good (size depending) and it does not put me off booking again as I have done many times.

Restaurant staff friendly and swift. Good choice of dinner menu and food was excellent Bedroom has charm and very comfotable bed. Hotel has lots of character, olde worlde charm - and some of the issues which go with that Lighting in room was poor - lots of side lights and table/standard lamps but overall it was very dark. Hot water in the evening was barely tepid - and took ages to arrive. Morning it seemed better, but temperature of shower was still warm rather than hot. Tea/coffee provided - but some bottled water would be good. Morning breakfast menu is too eleaborate.- and over-priced. Only cereal available is over-rich granola/yoghurt concoction.

- Cruiser551719 (2/5): Avoid! - I went with twenty one others to a Christmas Party at the Crown and Thistle in December 2025. As I have food intolerances I spent 45 minutes in a three way telephone conversation with the chef and an employee. The camembert starter would be prepared specially for me and I had a medium rare steak with chunky chips and plain rocket and sliced tomato, no sauces and no dressings. When the waiting staff came I twice refused the normal camembert starter informing them that the chef was preparing one specially as I had intolerances. Then my steak came out, with ONION RINGS on it. I said that this could not be mine as I am intolerant to onion. The second attempt came out with peppercorn sauce which contains GARLIC. The waiter apologised and I explained I could not eat onion or garlic and I had specifically preorganised with the chef what I could eat. Finally, when most of the others had finished my main came out. I felt embarrassed to be eating and holding everyone up from their desert. A waiting staff member kept popping their head around the side of the bar to see if I had finished which made me feel quite uncomfortable. Although the food I ate in the end was good, the evening had been spoilt. I contacted the manager of Crown and Thistle on two occasions since and allowed time because of the Christmas season, but I have not received the courtesy of a reply.

- CalW93 (10/5): Exceptional as always! - Everything. The staff are always so friendly and wonderful, polite, kind and helpful, the perfect way to start a stay here. The honeymoon suite was incredible. The bed was so comfortable and I slept a full 8 hours with no interruptions even with the road outside. The rolltop bath is the best feature however, I nearly lost myself in it. The water was lovely and hot and it was just a level of indulgence you dream of. Breakfast was exceptional, and the range of ways the eggs are cooked is superb! The smashed avocado and poached eggs on sourdough toast with extra hash browns were delicious! But I imagine if you order anything off the breakfast menu it will meet, or exceed your expectations. Nothing.

- charmainep716 (10/5): VERY IMPRESSED! - We stayed overnight with breakfast next morning. After meeting up with family we all returned same day for a Sunday Roost. We had a wonderful stay in the heart of Abingdon. The bed was comfy & big, and we slept really well, no noise or light issues. The buildings are full of old world charm and so interesting. The food was really well presented and tasted great with plenty of choice. We were served by Isla who was lovely, but we were really impressed by all the staff there, they were all helpful and genuinely friendly. We were VERY impressed. We hope to stay again in the future.

Good breakfast and the coffee was really good. Waitstaff were very good . - Q2951YGjoannef (10/5): Brilliant wedding reception - We booked the Crown & Thistle for our wedding reception in September with family and friends gathered there the evening before. Phil and Ruth were amazing- taking care of everything with attention to detail and humour...putting everyone at ease. Food was brill and the extra mile taken to ensure preferences and tolerances were accounted for from age 3 to 80! Thankyou for striking the balance between formal/informal...everyone had so much fun and I've heard nothing but praise ftom our guests for the staff at the C&T. A wonderful event and the cherry on top of a beautiful day...thankyou C&T, Phil and Ruth xxx

- paulsV9080OD (2/5): Disappointing - The room was very small, poorly cleaned and dimly lit. The windows were covered so there was no view out and didn’t open. The only heating in the room was via the air conditioning unit which was sited just above the bed and was too noisy to keep on. Further fan noise was provided by the kitchen fan just outside our window. The receptionist was helpful although reception itself was not always staffed. There was no lounge so it is not really an hotel anymore. All in all, the stay was ok but it didn’t represent good value for money.

- Jack (1/5): Loud stay, little sleep - Rooms were a good size The property had a party on with a live band and did not inform us. It was extremely loud and we could not just hear the band word for word during songs but also when they were talking on the mic between songs. This went on until 11:30pm and then had music playing after with a loud bass + guests leaving where you could hear every word they said as they left. This hotel was booked a night before a marathon and this ruined the sleep before. I would not recommend this property to anyone.
- RonnieCorbett (2/5): Don't bother, we won't be back! - Visited as with our 4 year old son. The restaurant was pretty empty, I understand now why. Service was substandard. The tables were dirty, as was most of the cutlery. When our food came it was all lukewarm, except my 4 years old tomato pasta, which was scalding. The food was also pretty dire - steak frites which should have been pink but were well done, chips too salty, and tomato pasta which was literary pasta and tinned tomatoes.
