Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- Georgina (10/5): - This was a very authentic Japanese Ryokan experience. The lady running the place was so thoughtful and informative it made our stay very special. A beautiful old fashioned guesthouse, with warm hospitality.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Historic Japanese inn lovingly preserved, staying here was like stepping into Japan’s past and a refuge from the bustle of Tokyo.
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Absolutely loved our stay here. A tranquil escape amidst the business of tokyo. The area is very quiet and residential but has some lovely buildings to look at whilst strolling around. The hotel itself is very lovely and charming. Room (double) was a great size and had everything needed. The bath facilities were a great bonus too. I recommend getting the breakfast add on, it was delicious! Would stay again!
- cyril (10/5): - Fantastique unique
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- Paolo (10/5): Consigliatissimo - Tutto perfetto. Ryokan bellissimo. A un passo dalle fermate metropolitane. Stanze enormi. Proprietaria gentilissima e disponibilissima.
Sehr authentische Unterkunft. Jederzeit wieder!
- Marta (10/5): - Authentic Ryocan
Perfect service
Personal super supportive in all
Made our experience in Tokyo complete adding the real traditional flavor
Thank you !
- Henry (10/5): - Better than expected , Japanese style accomodation with private facilites . Good. WiFi , hot baths close to cable car 50 metres. approx 900 Metres from town up a steep hill
- BostonBostonGirl (10/5): Lovely, clean, charming traditional ryokan - Miyoko was a wonderful hostess in this traditional ryokan with many unique and beautiful detailing and craftsmanship. This is large ryokan by japanese standards. Spotless clean. Convenient to subway (few minute walk). Lovely neighborhood. Breakfast (japanese and western) available. I highly suggest this for anyone who would like to have a traditional ryokan experience
- Verified traveler (10/5): Defo recommend - Excellent ryokan in Tokyo! Best part was the traditional Japanese breakfasts that they can make vegetarian or vegan!! Really great beginning of our stay in a quintessential Japanese style.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very quiet l like is the big room not to far from the station about 5 minutes walk.and very clean
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Our host was incredibly helpful, make our stay an absolute pleasure. What a beautiful place, easy access to Ueno. Thanks heaps.
- Rewatosan (8/5): - the hotel's manger is very nice and warm welcome. With hospitality style and charming place and good services.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Will Return - Heritage building with much charm. Old property extremely well-cared for. A minshuku that feels like a ryokan. Very close to the University of Tokyo and its lovely neighbourhood. Will return.
- Ugo (10/5): Atmosfera genuinamente Giapponese - Tipica atmosfera da Ryokan. Molto suggestivo.
Baderum i kælderen, mulighed for at gå i aflåst, private baderum.
- Rachel (10/5): Charming overnight stay in Tokyo - What a hidden gem! A friend recommended I stay here to feel what an older building would be like. Room was spacious, hostess was great with English and genuinely curious and engaging—most of the staff I met elsewhere on my trip were stand offish, but not so here. There’s an engagement and concern for well being here.
Breakfast was so tasty!
Didn’t get to use the sento, but it looked serviceable enough.
The garden out front is something to behold. Try to catch it in fall. Really sets the stage for your journey.
Good value for money!
- Kjell (10/5): A great experience - The Homeikan Morikawa gives you a taste of an older and traditional Japan. We were given excellent service. The rooms are old style with sliding doors and tatami floor. The hotel provides hot baths and lucky for us also have airconditioned rooms. This place is a must for people with an interest in Japanese culture.
- Bradley (10/5): Nice property but WAY overpriced for what you get - This is an average Ryokan or traditional Japanese Inn conviently located near Tokyo University and Ueno Station. It’s a nice property with very friendly staff, but WAY overpriced for what you get. The room and public areas are dirty and in severe need of a deep cleaning and more attention to up keep. The hot baths were so bad and odoriferous that I took one look and returned to my room. For the price I paid I was expecting a much higher quality property.
- MorrisonLiz (8/5): Quaint, real accom - We checked in for karate training for the week. Our room was just as we imagined it would be. Tatami mats and futon mattresses on the floor. The manager, Miyoko, was so helpful and she speaks excellent English. We loved the tradition of this 60yr old building. The area is close to lots of eating places and an easy 20min walk to the centre. Very peaceful accom. Will definitely stay here next time too. 😊⛩
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Azizah (10/5): very Japanese style - I was surprised that the three-star hotel can be as comfortable as the five-star hotel in terms of the clean and silent room and friendly staff. The hotel atmosphere invites you to explore the authentic Japanese culture. Not only cozy stay but also can learn their culture. Hope someday come to this hotel again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great Ryokan experience - The staff were very friendly and could explain things in English too. Very tidy rooms.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Eduardo (10/5): A totally new experience - Was pleasantly surprised about the building and how it continues to maintain that traditional look and feel while providing the basic western amenities for those that need them.
The staff was very helpful and the Okami (manager) always looked after our needs and helped us out plenty. Extremely satisfied about the treatment.
There are enough food choices around and public transit was excellent - a 5 minute walk and you can catch a bus that goes straight to Akihabara, you can take the subway from the university, or you can walk to a more central station (only about 10-15minutes). Shibuya and other main areas were only 30 or so minutes away.
If you like to walk around, you will find plenty of modern and traditional views including to small and medium sized shrines/temples.
- Beau (10/5): Nice ryokan (Japanese Inn) close to Ueno - Staying at Homeikan Morikawa Annex was a delight. The location was excellent, within walking distance of Tokyo Dome and the many fun activities there, the beautiful campus of Todai (University of Tokyo), Ueno Park and Ueno Okamachi where I was able to enjoy reasonable shops and delicious izakaya and ramen. Other highlights included the spacious tatami room, tasty breakfast, and overall care by the staff. Something I wouldn't have expected was the attention to little details such as the wooden flowers as part of the shoji screens or the unique decorations over the different sinks or the Roman collage in the ofuro (bath). I would definitely stay here again.
- Ann0777 (8/5): Traditional Ryokan - If you are looking for a very traditional stay while in the area, then this is a nice clean ryokan, the staff are friendly and although we did not speak any Japanese we were able to communicate efficiently. It rained a lot during our recent visit and the staff were always on hand to provide umbrellas and anything else you needed. We had the traditional breakfast and it was great to try something that we would not normally participate in. Would definitely stay there again.
- martapallotto (10/5): Amazing stay - I stay athe the homeikan hotel unfortunatley only one night for a work trip in Japan, but the hotel is super clean, very confortable and the owners can speack english. Moreover, it is located in a very nice area. I would highly recommend!
- 525jacobe (8/5): A Traditional Ryokan with great service, friendly staff and high quality breakfast. - This is a very traditional RYOKAN. Shared bath and toilet, Shoes deposited in the foyer, room does not have beds, water, storage, seating, etc.
But it is a great way to experience Tokyo. My family shared the room ( 4 people ) and worked perfectly. Staff was attentative, helpful and very friendly.
Tokyo is a very big city - location matters and in my opinion this was a bit off center.
- koji6915 (10/5): University group visit in January 2016 - Wonderful ryokan--our group met Japanese high school kids about to sit their big university exams and a happy group from Denmark. Great traditional rooms-tatami, super baths. Hotel people were very friendly and helpful.
- kellis424 (6/5): Very smoky - I stayed here with a group of students. This inn was good for the group situation. They provided a nice breakfast for us downstairs each morning. The rooms were very traditional and nice with comfortable beds and excellent AC. The toilets were very cramped…not much leg room for us taller Americans. The communal bathtub was nice, but the changing room was a little gross with old carpets and moldy ceilings. The location was great, quiet and pretty convenient. My biggest complaint was the smokiness of the inn. The smoke originated from the first floor, and I'm not sure if it was the people who worked there or guests, but it was quite overwhelming and noticeable even when we stepped out of rooms on the 2nd floor.
- hashihime (8/5): charming if a bit standoffish - I've stayed in both the Homeikan and the Homeikan Morikawa bekkan multiple times. I love the quiet neighborhood near Univ. of Tokyo away from traffic noises. Both establishments are old, in the style of the 1950s or 60s, though with heat, air con, TVs, etc. Shared toilets, sinks, and bathing areas, but quite restful and far preferable to cramped business hotels. Nice buffet breakfast can be purchased at a hotel just down the street, either Western or Japanese style.
I am, however, always puzzled by the odd standoffishness of the staff. They are helpful enough but not particularly friendly, compared to other establishments. I have always found this curious, though I will stay again.
- AshStanley (8/5): A traditional ryokan guesthouse in a lovely but quiet area of Tokyo - My husband and i stayed at Homeikan Morikawa as part of our month of travel through Asia, and it hit the right notes for us. I am trying to figure out how to review this particular stay, because while there were downsides to Homeikan Morikawa, there were, in my opinion, more upsides, depending on the type of stay you are considering. The upsides were that our room was lovely and traditional, the beds comfortable (despite the bean bag pillpws), wifi accessible, the price extremely reasonable (especially for Tokyo), and the location was in a quiet neighborhood with easy access to the metro lines which we try to use as often as possible while traveling. The ryokan had an odd charm that we enjoyed. The downsides were that the bathroom facilities were just average (although we did enjoy the family showers and bath), but we're not overly picky in that respect. Another downside would be the location for some (out of Tokyo center), but as we used the subways for easy transport around the city, we were able to go out for the nightlife to Shenjuku and navigate easily home. The ryokan is also very close to Ueno Park which houses a lovely lake, walks, many temples and the Tokyo Zoo. We visited during the cherry blossom festival, and the park was beautiful and lively and full of food vendors and absolutely worth a day visit. given the price and the loveliness of our room, we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend Homeikan to certain, less "fussy" travelers who lean towards experiences over luxury.
- Milocc (4/5): Nightmare Ryokan! - Stayed in four different Ryokans over a 11 day period in Japan. This one was shocking! Toilets were smelly and bathrooms not even to the style and standard of a ryokan.
- alexandrasQ46YB (6/5): Rustic and very affordable. Very nice staff. - Homeikan Honkan and Morikawa February 27 to March 3.
We stayed the first 3 nights of Honkan (also read my review on Honkan) and was moved last night due to Morikawa refurbishment of Honkan.
Daimachi appeared not to have family who escaped us 5 family, which was a shame because we would have liked to have had direct access to Daimachis nice garden.
Homeikan have very good prices to be living in Tokyo and could also accommodate our family of 5 persons, which was otherwise difficult to find. We also assessed that the situation was good to visit other attractions in Tokyo where there were two nearby Metro stations and lines that reached almost everywhere.
Morikawa
Morikawa We spent our last night in Tokyo after being escorted by the staff at Honkan in their minivan. It is about a few hundred meter further from Hongo sanchome and Kasuga stations.
The staff were like at Hokan, very friendly and helpful. And the reception staff knew some Swedish words!
Our family room was much warmer than the Honkan, but the room smelled a bit musty and seemed older. Whole Morikawa felt old and rustic with its wooden columns and many details.
The bathroom (women's) was smaller with only 2 showers and a total of 3 taps. The pool was smaller than the Honkan, and therefore easier to bring down the temperature of the otherwise very hot water.
We also ordered breakfast at Morikawa and payed 1000yen/person for this. Can not say the food (bowl of rice, fish cakes, susages, miso soup, cabbage with bonito/onion flakes, pickled vegetables and strawberries) was worth its price, but we probably paid more for the room service which was impeccable, of course.
We discussed back and forth on whether we should book Homeikan again when we return for our last night in Japan prior to departure back home to Sweden.
But we decided at the last minute to try a western hotel (Prince Hotel Sakura) in Shinegawa instead and then paying about 8000 yen more. But of course with a comfort that we recognise with our own bathroom, toilet, flat screen TV and 4 pieces of 120 cm beds. AND a view of Tokyo Tower.
We do not regret at all our experience in Homeikan. Homeikan offers a rustic atmosphere that feels more like home rather than a hotel. But travelling around the days after to the various parts of Japan and Japanese style accomodation, we realised that we could have better japanese style than Homeikan. But Tokyo is Tokyo, with its high housing price, Homeikan is certainly affordable accommodation for such a big family like ours.
- Denizen (6/5): Decent option - This is a reasonable option for Tokyo accomodations, especially if you're trying to limit your budget. But note that the location, next to Tokyo University, is not central and there's nothing much open at night except for a couple of combinis.
The staff are nice and the rooms are fine--nothing special, although they are a bit larger than average by Tokyo standards. The baths are located in the basement and are clean.
Homeikan has two other buildings--the Honkan and Daimachi. I think the Daimachi is supposed to be the nice one, so it might be worth a look.
