Guest Reviews
- Matea Breznik (8/5): Autentično, slatko - Autentičnost, jako udobni kreveti. Malo strme stepenice dok spavaće sobe.
- Karissa (10/5): Perfect! - We LOVED our stay here! We were here for 4 nights and although we wish it were longer, it was our favorite place that we stayed on our 2 week trip in Japan. Clean, stocked with everything you would need during a stay…the bathroom was so nice, the water pressure and toiletries in the shower was amazing! The beds were so comfortable and cozy! We were always excited to get into bed after a long day of exploring! Place is close to a lot of different things and a super short easy walk to a bus stop. There is a great little vegan cafe around the corner called SilverBacks…definitely check it out. I hope to come back to Kyoto again and hope to be able to stay here when I do come 💖💖💖

- Kyla (8/5): Overall good value for the space. It was in walking distance to some key shrines and sights but not close to a train sta - It was a large property with living space separate from sleeping. And it had a washer and dryer in unit. The staircase was very narrow.

Wejście do zaułka koło kwiaciarni, obok stoi mały obelisk.

- Carol (8/5): - Maison typique japonaise
Très calme et reposante.
Lave linge et lessive à disposition
Tous les produits de toilette nécessaire L escalier très raide empêchant de monter les bagages qui de fait restent dans le salon.
Aucune lumière du jour au rez de chaussée
- Anna (10/5): Beautiful space and great location - highly recommend -
- Mei (5/5): Passable - Quaint, great to have a washer available Difficult to find and problematic checkin. A very steep narrow treacherous stairway to access bedroom upstairs. Luckily we r able bodied but my knee n hips hurt after the stay due to the awkward position needed to climb up n down the stairs. Luggage needed 2 people, 1 to boost from bottom n I to hoist from top. Would not have booked if we were aware of the staircase
- Benjamin (10/5): A great option for first time visitors to Kyoto. - Close to a bus route that gives great access to many places of interest around Kyoto. Nice, friendly neighborhood and neighbors. Peaceful and relaxing. Stairs are steep, but that is to be expected with the architectural style.
- Thomas (9/5): Well equiped, quiet apartment on the east side of Kyoto providing good value. - The apartment is as shown in the photographs. It is quite large, compared to a hotel, with good cooking and bathroom facilities. The kitchen was well equiped. The beds were comfortable, and there is a desk area able to accomodate 2 people. The washer/dryer works well, and there was soap of all kinds. The aparment is very quiet and within walking distance of Kiyomizu-dera. The apartment is convenient to the 206 bus running from the train station and a variety of other buses. The subway is a bus ride away. There is also a taxi stand a block away. As others have noted, the stairs are very steep, but there is a banister and it was not a problem for us. The ground floor does not get much natural light. The bathroom is on the ground floor, while the bedroom is on the upper floor. The most challenging thing was finding the apartmment. From Higashi Street (the street the 206 runs along) turn east into Shibuya Dori. About 50 meters up Shibuya Dori on the left is a pedestrian alley. The apartment is down the alley with residences on both sides. The apartmentt has a blue flag over the entry with "Samerai Tei" on it. So once you find the alley, it's easy, but google maps isn't much good at showing the alley. There are restaurants in the immediate vacinity, but not a lot.
- Barry (8/5): Very good - Nice traditional style house
- Zachary (8/5): - Comfortable, well-located house in a quiet residential alley. The house was quite cold when I arrived, and it took some time to heat up. The place doesn’t get much sunlight. Cool to stay in a machiya. Stairs are narrow and more like a ladder, but easily navigable for younger and smaller bodies. For the price there are more comfortable and equally well situated places around.
- Dennis (8/5): Hope I can stay there again in April! It was great. - It was hard to heat up the living room, probably because the house is old.
- Ichiro (8/5): Very good -
- Carruth (10/5): Beautiful home, close to everything, yet removed enough to be quiet at night. - Beautiful home. Location was great for walking to nearby restaurants and temples. Easy access to bus. Quiet at night. Comfy bed made from 2 full size mattress side by side, so it was huge. VERY STEEP/narrow staircase up to the bedroom that may be tricky for some. Not a problem for us, but it's almost like a ladder.
*We had a FANTASTIC set dinner at Shiko, just a short walk away. Lovely husband, wife, and daughter were so kind and explained to us what every single thing on our plate was. Also had a wonderful evening sitting at the bar of the 60's and 70s British Rock Sake&Beer Bar WindMill just across the nearest intersection. And Smile Burger exceeded expectations - great music playing too. I was waiting to be emailed the door code, but eventually realized it was in a message within the Booking.com app.
- Cade (7/5): Enjoyable - Quiet location but not to far away from main hubs. Stairs very steep more like a ladder property not suited to less mobile people
- Carla (9/5): A highlight of our stay in Japan! Very comfortable, the kitchen was a great convenience and the bathtub was a wonderful - Beautiful little house in a quiet laneway, close to public transport and temples. The staircase upstairs was extremely narrow and steep, but this is understandably a characteristic of the local architecture. Would not recommend for larger people!
- Elise (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gaspar (9/5): Superb - Great location. Great layout. Very good ac for hot summer days.
- Alison (10/5): Charming home away from home - So charming! The perfect little home for 5 days in Kyoto. The bathtub was a highlight It was gorgeous - and the stairs are very steep, more like a built in ladder so anyone with mobility concerns be aware.
- Juliet (10/5): Except for a small glitch in communication staying was Samurai Tei was pleasantly memorable. - Perfectly situated for our interests. Convenience store very close and best coffee just few steps away. Historic Gion just 15 minute walk. Famous shrines and temples within walking distance. Property was perfect size and well equipped for 2 persons. Beddings were high quality cotton. Nothing
- Joao (8/5): Very good -
- Danielle (10/5): Beautiful machiya residence in Kyoto that feels like home. - Like living in Kyoto!
With a lovey machiya to come back to each night it was a delightful place to stay that felt like home. Property had all the amenities we needed and the owner promptly advised of an issue with the washing/ dryer machine (prior to our arrival) and organised its repair, keeping us in the loop the whole time. The shower/ bath room with large bath bowl was ideal to use each evening and with the serenity of the tiny garden and lighting to look into certainly got you relaxed after a day of dealing with the mass of tourists that is currently in Kyoto. Property was well located, close to the bus stop and Lawsons but tucked away down a small alley that it was quiet each evening. Also was nice to be in a main tourist area that meant you didn’t have to fight to board a bus each evening to get back, like the lines we saw each evening when getting some dinner 😅. Also meant we were able to easily see some sights at night and in a different light like Yasaka shrine, Hokan-ji temple and the rest of the Gion area without the masses (vast difference during the day!!!). Also easy to contact the owner if needed through a platform that he will advise you about. Was a little bit hard to find, address and Google maps sent us around to an area that was behind the property down a different alleyway, so took a little bit of walking around to find it. Thankfully keeping an eye out for the Samurai-Tei door curtains made it pop out. The little alleyway that it is down has a gravestone for the Sato brothers- 佐藤継信・忠信の墓 - which once we found it made it easier to plumb into Google maps as a point of reference.
