Guest Reviews
- Lee (7/5): Lovely manager . Would do anything for you . - Quiet and spacious . Good location The breakfast wasn’t great.
Very basic no choice .
Alles super
- Robyn (7/5): We liked crossing the road and finding local places to eat . - A lovely setting across the road from Talalla South Beach. Villas set in a coconut plantation.
Very friendly staff , Mr Kumara was the Manager and he was very attentive to any requirements. No complaints
- Sach (10/5): Great venue, great value - We held a party for over 40 people here, the staff were amazing, really looked after us well. They helped set up a delicious buffet for us. They even set up a beach cricket setup for us, super fun. I think the bar was slightly under stocked but maybe just a bit of underestimating on our side too.
- NayomiAUSPR (10/5): Relaxing and peaceful - Superb location and helpful staff… gorgeous gardens and wildlife. None
- Nicola (10/5): Relaxing stay at Talalla Beach - Fantastic stay and wish I stayed longer.
- Petr (10/5): Vynikajici pece personalu, krasny pokoj a krasne prostredi. Byli jsme spokojeni - Vynikajici pece personalu, krasny pokoj a krasne prostredi. Byli jsme spokojeni
- Fredrik (5/5): Great location and potential but didn’t make it all the way - The potential is huge. Our room was nice and the garden was well kept. Close to a fantastic beach without crowds and just the amount of businesses needed to provide great lunches and dinners. Well, where to start… the staff was young and seemed inexperienced. A bunch of young guys who didn’t really know what to do and how to serve guests. It improved a little bit the last night/morning when the manager was present.
Parts of the facility wasn’t finalised. Electric cables were hanging loose from the wall, outdoor furniture around the pool and eating area was in really bad condition, our terrace sofa lacked pad/cushion, wardrobe handle not replaced when broken and they couldn’t clean our room because they didn’t have another key to our room.
- Nanett (8/5): -
- Collins (9/5): Friendly Vibe - The staff are super friendly and accommodation, attentive breakfast was super tasty. We arrived on the evening of the New Year so nothing was open on the beach, which was a shame but of course nobody's fault, only the timing was bad.
- Lorraine (9/5): A delightfully private retreat with an excellent manager just moments from the Indian Ocean. - The property and grounds were lovely, the spacious rooms were presented beautifully. It was like being in our own wild life park, fabulous pool and friendly staff. Peaceful location, private and secluded and only one minute walk to the beach. Hotel menu was delicious but it did state, beer and cocktails which were in fact not available. Thankfully there was an excellent beach bar a couple of minutes down the beach but if we could have had a cocktail in the hotel we would have enjoyed that.
- Fiona (4/5): Disappointing -
- Charlotte (7/5): Nice plot but nothing to do in Talalla. - Generally it was a nice property, with amazing land, very green. Pool is nice. It was a peaceful place to chill during the day. The staff were attentive. There was an amazing seafood restaurant on the beach (not part of the hotel), we loved it.
It was our anniversary, and the staff upgraded us to a lovely room, and made our room very special for our arrival. If you’re looking for a quiet stay, not too far from Hiriketiya then this would be perfect for you. The area was extremely quiet, like a ghost town. We made the mistake of staying in Dikwella before (10 mins down the road) so we decided to move on after 1 night out of 3. The bath in our room was rather dirty, and parts of the buildings need a clean. When we arrived the staff pretty much followed us into our room with a card machine to pay for our stay, we didn’t like this and would have preferred to have paid on departure.
- Michael (8/5): Don't miss this place - Excellent location for the beach. The accommodation was well laid out and we had an open air bathroom with free standing roll top bath in which you could relax and watch the night sky. The pool was nice and well maintained. The staff were very friendly and helpful however their English is a little lacking but you soon worked out who to see to get what you wanted. Breakfast was copious and they would always try and accommodate your requirements. The place is set in a coconut plantation so we had fresh coconut water with our breakfast. We had a couple of meals there in the evening and they offered us the opportunity to have a table on the beach, which we accepted and it was a lovely evening. The accommodation and gardens are tired and in need of a bit of TLC and we understand from the manager plans are in hand to upgrade the place. The beach bar is a bit rundown and hopefully this will be included in any refurbishment. The cover picture is somewhat out of date as there are a couple of mature trees in the courtyard.
Having said all this, would I stay there again, yes.
Would I recommend the place, yes because the people make up for the tired, but clean accommodation
- Steven (10/5): Paradise found! - The very quiet Gardens, the lovely breakfasts, beautiful empty beach, lovely pool and courteous attentive staff. We had a gorgeous room with an out door, roll top bath. If you're looking for a quiet beach, this will hit the spot. The waves are strong so probably best for confident swimmers though you won't have to be an Olympian! The main house is also gorgeous with an airy colonial vibe. Evening meals can be taken at the beach restaurant over the road ( not a busy road). The place is gated with a 24hour watch for the security minded. Various swings, hammocks and board games dotted around. Peacocks, bee-eaters, monitor lizards and chipmunks abound. Heard a Coppersmith Barbet but didn't see it. Fruit bats fly over at sunset. Heaven! That I couldn't stay longer!
- Brett (1/5): Bad -
- Anand (3/5): Great staff in a horrendous property. - Ajit and his merry team of workers are fantastic - proactive, humble, efficient and always smiling. This is not villas for hire - these are rooms in a slightly dilapidated, musty apology of a resort. Ajit and his team deserve better infra - the room was smelly, the hot water barely there, the water itself kept getting turned off, the wifi - less said the better. No way should theee be marketed as villas or premium properties.
- Steven (8/5): very austetically pleasing. and great to experinece proper local cuisine. - beatifull large plot. looks absolutely charming. also the pools is spectacular, albeit not temp controlled. on side cooking local dishes was very tasty. limited food, drink menu. apart from the look of the location when we visited there was not much acitivities on site nor the surounding area to do. great for 1-2 nights woudl not reccomend longer stays unless its like company retreats.
- Chris (10/5): Exceptional -
- John (10/5): Beautiful and a Serene location - Beautiful and a Serene location
- Hansa (10/5): Had a fantastic holiday. Also the staff were super friendly. - Meals were super nice and the beautifully garden. Nop
- Chamaka (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nayomiauspr (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was excellent specially the team & the serene surroundings.
- Ruwina (10/5): Will come back again for sure. - The view from pool was marvelous and love the first sight of the room. Beach we didn't get the opportunity to view the Beach. Nothing to complain, everything was beyond expectation
- Tanya (8/5): Very good -
- Egidijus (10/5): Exceptional - Our stay in Handun Villas was amazing. The rooms were very clean. And The staff was very helpful. Helped us to organize TukTuk and even cross the road ro beach. The beach is empty, you could rarely see someone passing by. Like a holiday in paradise with peacocks around. Wifi speed could be stronger.
- Camilla (10/5): - Dejligt hotel med et smukt værelse. Top service
- Jon (10/5): loved the place - Really nice hotel. Big rooms, good pool and the best food we had in Sri Lanka
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Very dirty and dated. Bedding had stains and felt dirty when sleeping in it and the safe in the room didn’t work. The staff didn’t speak English so communication was difficult with the staff. Beach towels looked old and dirty.
- ChrisM (4/5): - Handun Villas is in a good location, close to the beach. This is about the only positive thing I can say about it though I’m afraid.
The bathrooms are outdoors, so we had cockroaches in our shower.
The bed linen was not clean, and the mosquito nets were poor, although thankfully we did not have too many mosquitos.
I was surprised to see how small it was and how different it looked from the pictures. I also am a bit sceptical about some of the positive reviews for this place because there is no way it gets any more than 3 stars for cleanliness...
The staff were friendly, but none of them spoke very good English so it was quite difficult to make requests or ask questions.
I probably would not recommend people to stay at this place right now, but if improvements are made (like putting a proper ceiling over the bathrooms!, and doing something with the land behind the pool and not just leaving it full of burned bushes and grass), then perhaps I could change my mind.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely small boutique hotel near the beach with a lovely restaurant on the beach too. Staff were lovely,
gorgeous breakfast, small but clean rooms. Pool we’re beautiful and the courtyard was relaxing. A real little gem and excellent value for money. Talalla is a must much quieter then other beach towns and more beautiful!
- MK (10/5): - Very Friendly staff, great location with restaurant on the beach
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very friendly staff and good location. Excellent food!
- Alex (2/5): Nightmare.. - This place was nothing like the photos, it's listed as a 5 Star but is actually 2 Star at most. The Pool was dirty couldn't be used, there were no management on site. we weren't shown around the complex., we were just shown to our small room. The worst part was Hotels.com refused to offer me a full refund, they only offered £78 back... I use Hotels .com for work and must spend £1000's every year..and they wouldn't even give me my money back, I'm done with Hotels.com. We refused to stay and left within 20 mins and found somewhere else to stay.. wasted day, miss advertised, this accommodation is a complete fraud.
- Rachel (10/5): - We had a great stay at Handun Villas. We only stayed 1 night as we were breaking up a longer journey but were very pleased with the cleanliness of the room. It had good air conditioning and a lovely outside bathroom. We were greeted on arrival with a delicious fruit smoothie and the Sri Lankan breakfast my husband had for breakfast was among his favourite on our trip so far. We ate dinner at the hotels restaurant on the beach and had a local curry and grilled calamari - both delicious. The road outside the hotel is a busy and noisy road but you can’t hear this noise when you close the doors to the villa. I would recommend!
- Sandra (10/5): Great location, lovely hospitality - a great stay - We stayed for 6 days at Handun Villas and we are extremely happy with the stay. The hotel is built around an old dutch manor, being the center piece and main building of the hotel. Spread throughout the fenced-in area are various cottages / villas which is the rooms you stay in. The architectural style looks amazing and invites relaxation and a cozy atmosphere. The pool area with hammocks further build on the chill vibe of the hotel. Throughout the property are mango trees which ripen in April.
We stayed in a room on the easternmost part of the area, room nr. 7 Kiri Palu. It was a 'Standard Room' consisting of a main room with a bed with mosquito cover, a desk with coffee/tea brewer, a TV with decoder and a wardrobe. The room also had a fairly large bathroom, with a toilet, a shower and a sink. There were two shower heads - one normal, one 'rainfall'. Seperate water heaters per room, and a bit on the small side. The beds were comfortable. The sockets are sri lankan, but you can use European chargers by fooling the top hole (grounding) with a pen /pencil. The wifi was good during the night, but slow during daytime.
Both the hotel manager, Damian, and the assistant manager showed fantastic hospitality and helped us out a lot. Anything from transportation and excursions, laundry, cooking classes and day-to-day questions were handled with elegance and a fantastic hospitality.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We loved our stay at Handun Villas. We found that the location and beach were easy to access and that the staff at the Villa were very accommodating and friendly.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property has been immaculately restored. It is clean, bright, quiet, beautiful and most importantly has a warmth and charm to it that is uniquely Sri Lankan. Damien, the manager, went above and beyond to take care of me and my friend. I very much appreciated his attention to detail and timeliness...a rare commodity on the SL hospitality circuit. The food was fantastic as well! I highly recommend a stay for a few nights and I certainly would love to revisit.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Thank you Damien for your hospitality during our stay at Handun Villas. I will definitely be back to stay with you next time I visit Sri Lanka.
- Rachel (10/5): - Talalla is one of the best place to do nothing - just relax all day to recharge and nourish both your body and soul. Handun Villas is the perfect spot to do this.
The building was an old manor refurbished into luxury villas, our villa was located in a beautiful garden, with a very serenity looking pool, where we hear sounds of tropical birdsong, see peacocks and chipmunks appearing from time to time. I personally think that this may be a good spot for a memorable destination wedding. There were couples got engaged and doing wedding photography here during our stay.
The general manager deserves a huge compliment, he is truly an asset to Handun. As they don't seem to have many staffs working here, Mr. Damien literally takes care of everything, always with a genuine smile on his face, even if it means working over his normal hours. It is best to let him know about your plans in advance so he can make proper arrangement for you without tiring him out.
Handun serves really delicious home cooked meals, we got the opportunity to do a cooking class to learn about making local Sri Lankan cuisine. It was a very lovely experience.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great hotel with lovely grounds and pool. Very close to beach. Villas are beautiful and clean with good air conditioning. The food is amazing, both breakfast and dinner we were very impressed. The chef is very kind.
Damien the hotel manager is so so wonderful! He did everything to ensure we had a nice stay and he really makes this property great. I would stay here again because of him and the other staff.
- K (8/5): - 5mins walk to Talalla Beach
Property is beautifully designed and landscaped with various fruit trees. Quiet and peaceful and chef cooks delicious foods!
Only negative is the bathroom for the standard rooms don’t have enough light.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Beautiful Hotel with Pristine Beach - Beautiful hotel, good air con and tv in rooms. Outside bathrooms were fun, not good if you are scared of bugs! Stunning pool - very clean. 5 min walk across the road to a beach which is pretty much deserted and really beautiful, sea is sometimes rough so you can’t always swim.
- Dunstan (10/5): - Great! Friendly staff.
- Bryan (10/5): I'll be back - Great place, clean and large rooms.friendly staff I recommend
