Guest Reviews
- Patricia (10/5): Lovely mother and daughter visit in lovely surroundings. - Beautifully situated overlooking the River Ouse, a few minutes walk from York Station. Very fresh, bright, clean and comfortable and within easy reach of the Shambles and other landmarks. The host, Martin, friendly and helpful. The house was generously warm during a cool spell in the city. Nothing to dislike
- Helen (9/5): Our two night stay was was easy and relaxed and I would definitely stay again - We were lucky to arrive in sunshine and the location was perfect. We arrived by train - station very close. A regatta was happening on the river, entertaining. We sat and relaxed in the garden watching the regatta. The room was a good size and clean and the en suite was great. The host was very welcoming, friendly and gave us good information about the best things to see and do Nothing! Although less able visitors might find the steep stairs a challenge. Good handrail - just something to know before you go, not a criticism at all.
- mark (10/5): Looking forward to booking afain - Great location friendly welcome and very knowlegdable
- Katherine (10/5): Perfect location with a great host - Location location! A 5 minute walk to town centre. Quite with lovely river view and walking path at our front door.
Martyn, our host was brilliant. Very helpful and gave us great local knowledge of everything from food to tours. The stairs! 🤣. They are steep, but hey welcome to Victorian England.
Not a problem really.

- Jacqui (9/5): Excellent location and good nights sleep. - Excellent location and very comfortable bed. Good shower and plenty of room. Good to have a fridge and good selection of teas. Nothing
- max (10/5): - Everything was bang on. Nice tidy house in a lovely spot, right on the river and right by the train station
- Catherine (8/5): -
- Kevin (8/5): Clean, effective and functional. - Overall very positive. One practical problem was that there was no way to access the river path on that side of the river, due to flood gates everywhere (signs say do not open!). Only way to avoid a large diversion if on foot is to go through the York Museum Gardens, which is fine, but the gates here close at 6pm, so if you are out in the evening, a long walk awaits you.
- Nadia (9/5): - Comfortable, clean, warm, nice extras: mini fridge.
- Jo (10/5): Lovely short stay, great host - Location, cleanliness, facilities Nothing
- Dominic (9/5): Comfortable and convenient - The location was great easy access to the city lovely location next to river
- Marketa (6/5): - It is very close to the centre of York and staff go above and beyond to recommend good locations. It is very tiny and the Victorian staircase felt dangerous.
- Phil (10/5): - Location was lovely, pleasant garden for sitting over looking the river, owner joined us for a drink & a chat.

- fuller (10/5): Our stay was fabulous. Very pleasant young gentleman greeted us upon arrival and ran us through what we needed to know a - Beautiful property inside and out in a picturesque location and local to all attractions We would of loved a view over the river having discovered the location but that’s all we can fault
- Costello (9/5): - Clean,quiet & good location Nothing !
- Joanne (10/5): Our second time stay here, location is fantastic and the host is so knowkedgable and helped out with a small issue strai - Fabulous location right in the heart of York

- Martin (8/5): -
- ANDREW (8/5): -
- Robert (8/5): Suited us perfectly for 2 nights, but it was very compact for the price. - Very convenient, comfortable bed, good shower, welcoming owner Very small room, bijou bathroom. Had expected view over the river.. steep staircase.
- Arvind (9/5): -
- Gillian (10/5): Excellent - Peace and quiet Found the stairs steep and narrow
- Shaun dusty (3/5): -

- Andrew (7/5): Great location, more than made up for the weaknesses. - Location was excellent, easy and pleasant walk along the river to the city centre. Martyn also welcomed us, showed where to park and helped take our bags to the house and (thankfully) up the very steep stairs. We would have preferred a room over the river rather than over the carpark. The room was rather small and despite staying four nights there was no attempt to replace milk etc or to wash the cups and glasses (this may just be a UK practice). There are no laundry facilities, but Martyn said that is planned for next year.
- Alyson (10/5): - The location was wonderful, so nice to walk along the river to get into town, with the bonus of a parking permit for a little extra. Our room was so cosy, the bed really comfy and we loved having access to a lounge (and outside seating if there for a warmer time of year!). Martyn was friendly and helpful. We will definately be back if the event we attended is back in the same place next year. Nothing!
- Jessica (10/5): - Excellent location. Clean, comfy bed, nice and warm, good shower. Nothing
- Colebrook (10/5): - The location was very good.
- Adam (10/5): - Location was fantastic. Staff were very helpful and knowledgable of the area. The bed was very comfortable and spacious

- Fiona (9/5): -
- Sheena (9/5): -
- yan (9/5): 不错,下次可以再来 - 位置很好,在河边,有小庭院,去哪里都方便,干净,提供了丰富的游玩信息,及时主动沟通,可以停车(需付费)。 房间有点小,Wi-Fi信号一般
- Teresa (10/5): - Friendly helpful owner who gave us lots of information about York. We had a comfortable large bed and everything was spotless Nothing
- Bharat Bhushan (10/5): Brilliant stay - Lovely property Martin is an excellent host. Made us very comfortable
- Laura (9/5): - Great location- close to the train station.
- Hans (8/5): - Zeer enthousiaste en informatieve ontvangst door George. En dicht bij centrum en station Geen
- Jane (8/5): Room very clean and comfortable. Would definitely stay again. - Location close to railway station and city centre.h Stairs very steep and sloping angle. Not meeting the owner.
- Amerik Singh (10/5): - Nice guest house. The host was really helpful and friendly. Great location and clean accomodation.
- Kachina (10/5): Perfect stay! - First time visiting York and this was the perfect place to stay. City centre is within 5-10 mins walking distance and it's a lovely walk alongside the river. Hosts were really friendly, they don't live on-site however so if you're looking for somewhere providing 24/7 attention then it's probably not for you. Room was a good size and has a mini fridge plus the usual tea/coffee provisions. Would recommend this place and will very likely stay here again. Not so much of an issue for us as I sleep with earplugs anyway, but it's worth noting the guest house is near a train line. Trains don't run through the night but they do start up again early morning so if you're a light sleeper it's something to consider.
- Kirsti (10/5): Great location - Perfect base for our short stay. Very clean and comfortable. Really friendly owner, very chatty and helpful.
- karen (9/5): Perfect - Location was perfect. Room was great. Teas coffees etc were replenished daily, the cold water in the room was really appreciated after a day out. The person who met us was so helpful. Information book in room was really informative.Would definitely recommend this guest house and we’d definitely stay there again.
- Angela (10/5): - Very, comfortable and clean. The hosts were so friendly and went out of their way providing information about where to visit in York and also where to visit on our way up to Northumberland. The property was situated in great location overlooking the river and close to the centre. I would highly recommend Abbey Guest House as a place to stay. Nothing not like
- Beverley (10/5): -
- Shaun (10/5): - From the moment we got there we were made to feel welcome N/a
- Grant (10/5): Excellent location and accommodation - A fantastic host and location. Excellent communications before checkin made it easy and seamless. Fantastic location just outside old town with easy walk to everything you need. Also had a great garden to have a refreshment whilst watching the world go by.
- Victoria (10/5): Great location - Great location and Martyn was very supportive guest
- Rachel (7/5): Good -
- Anita (8/5): A gem - Clean, comfortable accommodation. The location is excellent. Nothing
- Edith (9/5): It was lovely. Abbey Guest House was a wonderful place to stay and we fell in love with York! - The location was perfect for walking to our York destinations.
- Anthony (10/5): Next visit to York, we'll be checking here first - Location great. Room was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was clean and the shower large and powerful. Bed very comfy. Pillows a little flat, could do with one or two new ones.
- Daryll (10/5): Convenient and comfortable place to base yourself in York - Great location right on the banks of the River Ouse about 200m from the walls of the Medieval City centre. Takes 10 minutes or so to get to a variety of restaurants and pubs. The bed was very comfortable and the room was clean. Owner arranged for parking permits for 5 pounds which was quite useful. Our room looked out over the river. Very steep staircase with narrow treads if you're staying upstairs.
- Colin (10/5): Handy for the railway station. Great river view. - Nice touch fresh milk available for each room. Perfect for those travelling by train as the Guest House is just across the bridge form York station.
- Colin (10/5): Relaxing - The location on the river is excellent, and within a 5 minute walk of York centre.
- Robert (9/5): Superb -
- Pcloete (9/5): Superb -
- Graham (10/5): Exceptional - Perfect location, on the river, close to train station, close to town
- Greg (9/5): Great!! - Location and welcoming staff. The walk along the River Ouse was very nice/relaxing and close to great food and site attractions!
- Kim (9/5): Superb -
- Kevin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jennifer (8/5): Great property - Lovely location with easy reach of York centre.
Friendly host and comfortable clean room Quite steep stairs if you are less mobile, happily my mobility is fine.
- Jane (9/5): Perfect place to stay when you are exploring York. - We loved the location- walking distance from the train station and downtown. We also liked the patio where we could sit and watch the Ouse River. The stairs are very narrow and steep and require care. It would also be great if they served breakfast but the small fridge in the lounge let us bring some of our food.
- Andrew (8/5): Very good - Excellent location, just across the river and within walking distance of both the train station and the city centre. Very clean and comfortable and an attentive host.
- Mark (10/5): Top Hotel - A splendidly located hotel, very comfortable room...well appointed and expertly managed and maintained by our host. Super room overlooking the River Ouse and a stone's throw from the Minster, Shambles, Betty's and the National Railway Museum! Highly recommended. Will definitely stay here again when I'm next in York
- Suzanne (10/5): Great stay would recommend - The location is great especially if travelling by train only a short few minutes walk along the river to the town. Room was very clean & the bed was very comfortable, Rob provides a communal fridge with chilled water in for each room and tea and coffee facilities in the room. We also forgot one of our souvenirs and he very kindly is posting it to us as well. Honestly would 100% recommend Abbey Guest House Nothing
- Claire (9/5): Superb -
- Edmund (10/5): Perfect place, perfect location, perfect service! - Perfect place, perfect location, perfect service! Located within 5-10 min walk of York Minster & the City Centre, Art Gallery, Museum Gardens, at least 3 Michelin-starred & other great restaurants (Manetti's eggs Benedict breakfast are to-die-for!), and overlooking the River Ouse. With great prompt service from Rob: would highly recommend to anyone visiting York!
- Michael (9/5): Superb -
- Rebecca (10/5): Would stay again - Great location, 5-10 minute walk and you're in the old city. Comfortable room and bed, clean, we had a view of the river which was nice. Rob was welcoming and friendly.
- Dawn (9/5): Superb -
- Jasmine (10/5): Exceptional -
- You (9/5): Superb -

- Emma (9/5): Ideal base for exploring York - Peaceful, clean rooms and v comfortable beds. Big fluffy towels too! Owner was very welcoming and helpful
- Aaran (10/5): Amazing would reccomend and will be returining! :) - Location was amazing, a short walk away from the city center. Check in was easy and straight forward. Rob was super friendly, offered a warm welcome and gave a great insight and information on the city.
- Ian (9/5): Superb - Excellent location in close proximity to the train station, glorious view onto the River ouse, short walk into city centre, Rob was a fantastic host couldn't do enough for us, even booked our taxi to the York barbican before we arrived.,we stayed in room 2 front facing onto river, room was very clean and well presented, had a lovely night's sleep after a busy day all in all would definitely recommend staying again on our next visit to York and we have also recommended to friends and family. There was nothing we could find fault about abbey guest house.

- Holmes (8/5): Very good -
- Emma (10/5): Exceptional - Great central location and permit parking was very close also. The room was comfortable and clean.
- Christine (9/5): York was terrific and a day trip to Harrogate was great. Rob was the perfect host and nothing was too much trouble nothi - It was very clean and a modern bathroom in an old dwelling The only negative was being so close to the train station you could hear the trains a bit . The double glazing helped and ear plugs were provided but not needed . If you needed the windows open it might have been different ! But a great location if you arrived by train
- Tim (9/5): Superb - Super clean room and communal areas, safe parking, easy walk into town and lovely staff. Room was tight but that's what we expected. Absolutely no complaints.
- Terry (9/5): Superb -
- Douglas (10/5): Brilliant host, fabulous location and spotlessly clean. - Extremely friendly welcome from Robert, very accommodating and nothing seemed to be an issue.Train! ( another story) was not until much later in the afternoon, despite this we were allowed to leave our luggage and pick it up much later.
- Christopher (9/5): Superb -
- Michael (10/5): Lovely room I would stay again. - Rob, the host was super friendly, positive and helpful. The room was nice and clean the bed was comfy and the shower was good and powerful. Tea and coffee was provided in the room. The location was perfect for me as I had to attend an event at the Historium. Rob kindly organised parking for me as well, I couldn't ask for more. It was about loud in the morning due to the trains going by which may affect light sleepers, ear plugs were provided
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was perfect on out 2nd visit to the abbey

- Anthony (10/5): Exceptional - Location was excellent
- Andrew (9/5): Superb - Great location, friendly knowledgeable staff. Clean and tidy. Bed a bit too soft for my liking but if that's the worst thing I can say it means it's a great spot.
- Alison (10/5): Exceptional - A fantastic location, host and room. Being able to leave our bags and have a shower after the marathon was absolutely amazing! Everything was great.
- Stanley (8/5): Great value guest house - Convenient for train station
Close to museum gardens
Riverside location and wildlife and great views from the windows
A few minutes walk to town
Free milk every day
Free water chilled every day
Chocolates
Relax and dine area
Outside seating area
Great big fluffy towels
Superb hot shower We would have preferred a fridge in the bedroom
- Martyn (9/5): YORK ESCAPE - Central to railway and historic centre. All within walking distance. Rob, the host, was amazing and had a great knowledge of the area and restaurants. The history of flood gates very interesting. Double glazed windows kept noise of close train activity out. Had upper level room facing canal which was great. However, with no sheers to pull across windows, the room lacked privacy from those on walkway looking up and into room at night when lights on.
Note-no safe or air conditioning. Stairs very steep and shallow. Rob kindly took suitcases up and down.
