Guest Reviews
- John (10/5): Super pleasant! Lovely rooms and great staff - Super pleasant! Lovely rooms and great staff N/A
- Louise (10/5): Lovely 🥰 - Friendly attentive staff. Clean and perfect location
- Karwacki (9/5): -
- Julie (8/5): Comfortable pub with friendly staff - Friendly staff
Quiet location and pleasant atmosphere
Clean room
Decent pub food You could only choose 1 item for breakfast i.e you couldn’t have for example cereal and a cooked meal if you wanted one which felt a bit penny pinching
- Lindsay (9/5): Beautiful accom in Oxford - The room was extremely comfortable and the staff went out of their way to accommodate our late arrival which we really appreciated. It’s in a quaint part of town, felt nice and safe. Would definitely stay again.
- Richard (10/5): - Perfect location and friendly staff
- Gilly (9/5): -
- Volkert (9/5): - Wonderful veggie breakfast!
- Andrew (8/5): Very pleasant but thought we’d paid for the facilities and the room. - The location is great and it was clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The bar and the restaurant were shut at 6pm!
- Lauderdale (7/5): Ok but not great - Nice area and pub Bit pricey for what it is, also struggled to get meals out on time plus bar closed early (10pm)
- Maria (10/5): -
- Tom (9/5): Convenient location outside OX1. Excellent room & great food. - Stunning building and excellent attention to detail. Very little.
- Nick (9/5): -
- Laura (8/5): -
- Siobhan (8/5): -
- Pauline (10/5): - Everything was perfect except not able to have a drink in the bar after 9.00p.m. The bar closing at 9.00p.m.
- Jackie (5/5): lovely, shame about breakfast service - Location for john Radcliffe Hopsital ideal and within walking distance. Room was adequate, small, but had all facilities. Food was Ok, well presented Waiting staff need training. I asked for yoghourt with granola and toast at breakfast - it all arrived on the same plate, literally toast, no butter/marmalade, as did my husbands breakfast - his cereal and poached egg [just one] on toast all arrived together so egg was cooling while eating cereal. So easy to rectify and make perception of it very good rather than adequate
- Laurie (8/5): -
- Teresa (10/5): Great place to stay with the option of lovely food and friendly staff - The pub and rooms were really comfortable. Set near Oxford but in a quiet street. It had lovely decor and rooms, whilst on the smaller side, was perfect for our purposes.
The staff at the hotel were friendly and attentive. Nothing
- John (4/5): The litmus test with any establishment is whether one would wish to return. Within the context of spending ÂŁ260 for bed, - Our bedroom was good and the bed very comfortable and it was nice having a tea & coffee tray in the room. We arrived well before check in and there was no trouble leaving our luggage, which we were most pleased to find had been taken up to our room and was there waiting for us when we subsequently checked in. Excellent! Our room rate was ÂŁ160 and my wife and I spent ÂŁ100 on our dinner. We asked for another piece of bread/toast to go with the starters and were advised, albeit politely, that that would be ÂŁ2.00 extra. We declined.
Breakfast was of a good quality but apart from tea/coffee and toast, only one further selection was possible. So, if you select the full English there’s no possibility of having, say, some muesli & yoghurt in addition. We found it most peculiar that no marmalade was available at breakfast. The gentleman serving breakfast, however, was delightful.
- Jeremy (9/5): Great place to stay - Beautiful pub. Great food. Lovely room. Staff wonderful.
- Mohamed (6/5): -
- Hugo (1/5): Complete con - so over priced - no atmosphere as pub is shut at 6pm on Sundays! - The location was sweet. Total rip off - not worth the money at all - it’s a pub hotel but we arrived on Sunday and the pub was about to close at 6pm! Totally ridiculous they don’t tell us that before hand otherwise I would never have booked! The breakfast cost £15 and was genuinely terrible - toast not even buttered. I’ve been trying to get a refund from them but they aren’t interested in contacting me - DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY STAYING HERE! Plenty of other places available for half the price!
- TIMBRELL (1/5): Dreadful - Lovely bathroom/ensuite The pub closed at 6 pm Sunday just as we arrived with no mention of this on the website! So no refreshments available!! Eye watering price!! Breakfast was ÂŁ15 and I had two poached eggs served on a thin slice of unbuttered toast! Manager was supposed to call me back yes stay but never did!! Would like a full refund!!
- Gillian (9/5): Excellent and would thoroughly recommend . - Full of old world character.
Breakfast and evening meal top quality with plenty of choice
Staff very pleasant and helpful.
Bed very comfortable Shower a little small on space but excellent quality
Bedroom and breakfast area cold . A little more heat on a chilly morning .
- Hayley (8/5): -
- Di (10/5): -
- Jones (8/5): Room was comfortable.Staff friendly and helpful.Food was delicious. -
- Colin (9/5): Birthday Celebrations in March - The food was very well cooked and tasty.
Fish and Chips were exceptional.
Would give it 11/10 say no more Nothing really all good
- Graham (10/5): A very enjoyable stay. - Very cosy and great pub with good atmosphere! Beer good. Breakfast very tasty!
Parking right outside the pub was free and this is very rare in Oxford! Nothing!
- Michael (10/5): -
- Andrew (10/5): -
- Andy (9/5): A wondrous place, well worth a return - All-round excellent, with splendid staff, and the food even better than last time: will be back soon
- Dee (9/5): -
- Charlotte (9/5): - Lovely cosy place. Nice clean room where everything worked. Comfy bed and pillows, dark and quiet good fur sleep.
Great food in the restaurant. Breakfast was also good. All staff were very friendly and helpful.
- Mary (9/5): - Katie made us feel very welcome we will definitely return
- Benjamin (10/5): Relaxing - Lovely staff
- Michael (9/5): Clean, comfortable and welcoming stay - Staff were very helpful and friendly - we were Neil's first ever check-in and he did a good job.
Room was clean and comfortable.
Pub and restaurant areas are nice and cosy. Nice log fire.
Modern renovation of the room and bathroom made this a comfortable stay.
Free parking.
Short walk (<10 minutes) to the John Radcliffe Hospital Our bedroom window was next to light at the front of the building - could this be switched off late at night?
Clearer instructions in the restaurant - we didn't receive menus and were unsure if it was table service or not.
- francisca (9/5): -
- Vivienne (8/5): Enjoyable stay. - Good breakfast. Location excellent, short walk from village to get bus to Oxford.
- Thérèse (7/5): Prisvärt! - Super bra frukost!
Trevlig ägare.
Gulligt hus!
- Todor (10/5): - Nice and clean, tidy, comfortable. Great staff, food and welcoming atmosphere.
- Timothy (10/5): Really enjoyable stay, very friendly staff - Staff were really friendly and helpful, hotel was clean and comfy All was good
- Robert (9/5): -
- Fern (8/5): A great place to stay - The pub is lovely set in a lovely quiet village with great transport links into Oxford. Parking great, bed so comfy, the room was very clean and the bathroom. The only thing I can say that let it down was how cold the main pub was., could have done with fire bring lit or the heating on. Especially in the morning.
And the net curtains in our room could have done with replacing as they were very tatty compared with the rest of the room. However didn't put me off and would stay again.
- Naomi (10/5): -
- Julia (8/5): Great place to stay -
- Pam (8/5): -
- John (7/5): - It’s a good location, with comfy rooms. The bathroom is a bit basic- could use an upgrade and would prefer having personal shower gels available.
Also the breakfast menu could be a bit more generous. Adding oatmeal, and real avocados instead of pre packaged guacamole, would be appreciated!
- Dean (9/5): Great staff, lovely stay, thoroughly enjoyed. - It was a lovely pub, great atmosphere and the menu was delicious, really nice well kept rooms. Nothing it was lovely, there was some music playing early in the morning that was a bit frustrating but not sure where that was coming from.
- Elisabeth (10/5): -
- Vava (10/5): Comfortable and welcoming. Will probably return in the new year. - Excellent breakfast very good service
- Matthew (9/5): Very enjoyable stay, excellent staff, nice pub and a comfortable room. - Friendly staff, comfortable room and bed. Lovely cooked breakfast. Great location to explore Oxford from. Temperature control in room was tricky, but we worked it out.
- Husemann (8/5): Very comfortable stay! - The house and the interior design. Spacious room. Pretty bathroom. Lovely hosts. Calm location.
- Stephen Radford (8/5): - Customer service and meals were great 👍
- Nicolas (8/5): I’d stay again - Location was good; positive and friendly staff, bar area was nice and the Camden Brewery Porter…excellent. The menu was fair and the food was good value and a fair quality. The room price I thought a little on the high side but there we are. It was popular and busy. Breakfast could start at 0730 as opposed to 0800
- Jessica (10/5): -
- Elizabeth (10/5): A lovely, cosy, clean place to stay! - This pub is lovely and cosy. Our room was clean and comfortable and we enjoyed a delicious full English breakfast in the morning. We were welcomed by Abi who was friendly, attentive and professional. We really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely recommend this place to stay. Easy walk to the bus stop to get into Oxford. Nothing
- Andy (9/5): A splendid and relaxing time in comfortable surroundings - Very comfortable and welcoming
- Karen (9/5): Look forward to returning - Friendly efficient staff. All necessities provided.
- Brian (9/5): - Great location & friendly staff.
Nichts!
- Dan (9/5): A little hidden gem. - Really comfortable homely feel. Very comfy beds and pillows.
The staff are amazing! Friendly, interactive, engaging and made it a fun evening. Maybe the shower could have been a little more roomy, but that’s it. It was a really good stay.
- Vikram (9/5): -
- Daniel (8/5): - Staff really friendly, room very comfortable, breakfast was excellent Evening meal. Not great value for money. Overcooked fish, fondant potato was most definitely not a fondant potato, dessert was disappointing. Great service though and a nice atmosphere
- stephanie (10/5): Lovely stay in quiet village pub - This B&B is above a lovely pub with great food.
The staff that welcomed us were very friendly and helpful. They took us up to our room, which was lovely. Very clean and modern. The bed was super comfortable and the bedsheets really soft.
Breakfast the next day was also good - all made to order.
There is parking just outside the pub for guests as well/.
The area is very quiet and safe - its like a village but attached to the main town. a very comfortable stay, would deffo stay again. everything was very comfortable - the only teeny thing was that we would have liked to open the bedroom window... but its not unusual not to be able to in any English hotels/B&Bs etc so nothing to take a point off/
- Carine (7/5): -
- KERRY (9/5): Had a nice overnight stay we eat in the restaurant which was really good nice breakfast as well in the morning - The property was nice and inviting staff nice
- Karan (8/5): The staff were amazingly warm and friendly - Location to the hospital was excellent
- Lorraine (9/5): -
- Jill (8/5): - Great location, staff and food
- John (8/5): - The staff were extremely helpful and very knowledgeable of the area. Perfect if you want the quiet ness of Oxford but only a 10 minute taxi to the hustle and bustle of this beautiful city. Nothing
- Carol (6/5): Perfectly comfortable but nothing special. - Proximity to family, friendly staff. Bin in shower room hadn’t been emptied from the previous guests visit. The extractor in the shower room didn’t work and the breakfast was modest.
- Nick (5/5): Clean but could be better. - Clean; good shower; comfortable bed; good location - 30 min walk to Oxford. Hotel (room and restaurant) needs some maintenance. Windows in room 4 didn’t close so very cold at night. Restaurant staff didn’t seem to know what to do.
- margarette (8/5): - Food was fabulous staff excellent. Breakfast great absolutely amazing food.
- bernardo (10/5): - .
- Thomas (10/5): - Clean room, friendly staff, loved the dining options and the walkable area.
- Caroline (10/5): - All the staff very friendly, professional and supportive.
Lovely room, very comfortable bed, fresh linen and with the best shower ever.
- Peter (9/5): -
- Mary (8/5): A relaxing stay in a lovely hotel in a quiet but central location. - We had a very comfortable bed and a clean room. Food was delicious. Would have like a rubber mat inside the bath tub for safety reasons and a tissue box.
- Eline (9/5): A place to return to! :) - The hosts were super kind and welcoming. The room and bathroom was spacious and clean. We could park our car on the premisis and easy take the bus to Oxford. It was a nice quiet neighbourhood. You can also eat in the pub!
It's a place to return to! Nothing
- Victoria (3/5): Disappointing Stay Despite Good Location - The hotel is in a good location, and some of the staff were friendly and helpful, particularly when it came to advice on travel. Unfortunately, our stay was not up to standard. The room was not properly cleaned — we found hair in the shower — and overall it felt quite sparse. The bed was small and uncomfortable, and certainly not what I expected for the price.
We had one of the worst nights' sleep due to constant flickering lights from the temperature control panel and smoke alarm, which kept us awake throughout the night.
Breakfast was disappointing as the options were limited, and neither my partner nor I received what we ordered. Overall, we didn’t enjoy the experience and won’t be returning.
- Philippe (10/5): I recommand the hotel! - Nice bed, nice place and the employees were great.
- Gerd-Christian (8/5): - Sehr gutes Frühstück und Abendessen. Weitere Pubs fußläufig erreichbar. Etwas außerhalb vom Zentrum Oxfords.
- Andy (9/5): -
- Wolfgang (9/5): - The team was so committed to provide a war dinner, although I arrived pretty late. The breakfast was phantastic.
- Adrianna (10/5): Great - Comfortable and lovely place. Just perfect. N/a
- Annette (10/5): - Friendly staff , comfortable room would definitely stay again. Thank y
- Dennis (6/5): Staff were helpful. Food could be better - Pleasant staff and nice village setting. Comfortable bed. Would have preferred more buffet style breakfast. Pub meal was average.
- Andy G (10/5): Excellent accommodation just far enough outside city for easy access, lovely staff, lovely breakfast -
- Marcus (9/5): - We enjoyed the breakfast especially.
- Lilia (10/5): - Lovely stay thanks to wonderful staff, though not as quiet or restful as I would have liked.
Location is convenient for Oxford Brookes University and bus stops with routes into Oxford Centre.
On arrival, I found out breakfast is served between 8 and 10, so I would miss breakfast on the two mornings of my course, as I had to leave at 7:30 on Saturday and 7:45 on Sunday. For Saturday there was nothing to be done, but for Sunday the incredibly lovely and attentive staff made me an early packed breakfast + lunch (as an alternative to make up for missed breakfast on Saturday). I am so grateful for the staff's kindness and flexibility, arriving early on Sunday to make sure I was fed - this is why I'm rating with 5 stars.
I was only able to enjoy the delicious breakfast served on site on Monday - great variety and everything super tasty.
Room and bathroom was super clean, nicely decorated and with welcoming touches: complimentary still and sparkling water, coffee, and biscuits.
Mattress was uncomfortable, pillows were nice.
Important to know: the rooms are right above the pub and three of them (mine included) face the street. Windows are not double glazed, so it is quite noisy until 11 pm on Friday and Saturday (car noise from street, conversations, laughter, music, and doors slamming). Lack of double glazing also makes for draughty rooms, and for some cigarette smell to sneak in from outside.
- Lena (10/5): Perfect, wish we could have stayed longer. - We loved our stay here. The pub and rooms were lovely. Having parking available made it perfect. Great WiFi - which stood out as that has certainly not been the case in many places we have stayed.
We ate dinner and breakfast here and thoroughly enjoyed both meals.
Location is excellent- easy stroll to bus stop for a short ride into Oxford centre. We got an Uber back, less than 10 minute drive and same cost as bus at ÂŁ10 for the 4 of us.
Staff were just lovely. So accommodating. We arrived well before check-in, but it was no problem for us to leave our car parked and head off for the day - which we really appreciated!
We were staying on a Saturday night - so pub had a lovely lively feel, a little bit of noise as to be expected, but all wrapped up at a very decent hour and was of no concern.
We thought our stay was very good value for room, breakfast and parking. There was nothing we didn’t like and will recommend to friends and family.
- Keith (8/5): A very pleasant stay at the Black Boy. - The staff were pleasant and helpful, the breakfasts were very good, room comfortable. Overall, a very pleasant experience. If you want to go to bed earlier in the evening, you may have to wait for the noise from the outdoor pub patrons to die down, at least during the warmer weather. By 11 pm it was nice and quiet, however.
- Kathy (10/5): Staff friendly and welcoming, most comfortable bed ever! Room clean, great food. - Staff friendly and welcoming, most comfortable bed ever! Room clean, great food. nothing
