• Claire (8/5): Great location skip breakfast. - The Vieng Mantra is in a great location just by one of the gates in the old town. It’s in easy reach of restaurants, bars and local shops. The renowned Sunday night walking market is just at the end of the road. The bed was comfortable the room was clean and the bathroom was nice. What was disappointing was the breakfast. There was a choice of three set American breakfasts but they didn’t start serving until 7.30am if you’re going out on a day excursion it was too late. One morning we did have the breakfast and it took 45 minutes to arrive and was disappointing. Book without breakfast as there are plenty of nice places to go with a quick walk of the hotel.
• HeidiH3323 (10/5): Cute Nice Accommodation - Will stay again - Really liked this cute hotel, great location, I walked everywhere. also literally right near the weekly local Sunday night market (connects with the street accommodation is on). Nice pool and cute balcony to sit on overlooking pool. I had the deluxe pool view room and it was nice, clean and comfy with a ginormous bed. provided two free drinking water bottles every day and also replaced towels and made bed each day. Staff were friendly and helpful especially when I arrived quite stressed out as my luggage was left behind after my flight in. They helped me ring the airline to find out what was happening with my bag. They helped with Taxi booking for airport and a visit to a temple. They had bicycle rentals too which I hope to use next time come back, definitely will stay here again. and for my fellow vegans even though there's loads of vegan places around, there is literally a cute place called 'vegan meals' on the end of this street and its was delicious :) I thought that it would be great if they did have more of a breakfast option available. (even if they charged a small amount for more breakfast options, I would have most likely paid for a breakfast option). I understand they only have the limited complimentary breakfast, but for me as a vegan I could only take a banana and a piece of toast with strawberry jam. so, I ate out every time which is easy enough. But I did think they could have at least some more fruit options other than just a banana. and potentially the option of a dairy free milk alternative like a soy milk option would be good and helpful too. I think they really need to take the photos off the website of the food, as I believe they used to offer that food, but no longer do (as I mentioned above) it’s only a very simple limited breakfast option now. I wish they still offered that food in the photos as it looked good. It’s kind of a little bit miss leading still having that on the hotel page on booking.com because even I thought there was still a chance, they might have that food if I paid for it. but they do not. such a shame though they don't do the food anymore. especially the mango sticky rice, my favourite. :)
• AllTheWalkers (8/5): Lovely place to stay - We enjoyed our stay here. Rooms were great, good size, nice and clean, well maintained and good air conditioning. We had rooms that overlooked the pool. I would definitely advise to upgrade to the rooms that view the pool. You get a great veranda and it's fab to sit out on. A location of the hotel was excellent - really in the centre of everything. We would recommend this place to anyone. Staff are a little quirky. We found across Thailand that everyone was soooo helpful. Here they were polite but not up to the level you get across Thailand. Just a mention. Also, as many people have said, you can get breakfast included if you pay cash. From what I saw of the breakfast I did not miss out on anything. We paid on card and got charged an extra 3% :-) But - we liked this place and would go back quickly.
• tinkgrrrbell (8/5): Decent no-frills hotel, perfect location in Chiang Mai - Argos1909 who wrote a review Dec 2023 sounds like a big giant Karen. Worst hotel in Chiang Main and not even a hostel? Get real. I have stayed here before and plan to stay here again this year. He/she also claimed the photos are misleading...I can show you photos from my own trip and they look exactly the same as the photos you will see on the site. There's absolutely nothing wrong with this hotel, and it's FAR from being a hostel. You also get what you pay for...who choses a super cheap hotel and then rants like they're judging a 5-star resort?? It's clean, staff is friendly, and the location is perfect. There are also scooter rentals super close by. The pool is pretty small, but I didn't come to Chiang Mai to relax around a pool...I came here to join the lantern festival, volunteer taking care of elephants, and take advantage of Benny's cooking class. If you're such a Karen that you have to unplug a fridge to get some sleep, maybe save us all from your fit throwing and just don't travel. Normal people bring ear plugs on vacation if noise bothers them that much.
• Argos1909 (2/5): Worst hotel in Chiang Mai - The worst place in Thailand. Beware of this place. DECEIVING PHOTOS!!!!!!. Noisy as hell after 6am, we couldn’t sleep with the staff around the kitchen working early in the morning. I don’t know doing what as they only have cereal and instant coffee. Our room was dark and awful. We had to unplugged the little fridge to try to sleep. Not even a hostel!!! We took the time to publish real photos so no one else gets tricked by this place We will never be back to this place!!! The worst.
• Runningrock (8/5): Lovely boutique hotel in an excellent location! - We stayed here for 3 nights and were very happy with the property. It's a small boutique hotel on a quiet side street just inside the Tae Phae Gate of the old city and right off a main road. About a 15 min. walk to the river. Our 3rd floor room was very clean, spacious, and comfortable, and faced the courtyard, overlooking the smallish pool. The bathroom was spacious, although the shower could use updating. The shower head is a hand-held shower that kept falling off the bracket which got the floor wet a few times. Also, there's no outlet in the bathroom (just something to be aware of). A basic continental breakfast is included, although we didn't eat at the hotel. The hotel is close to many cafes and shops. You can easily walk to any of the dozens of temples within the old city walls. There is a laundry service just around the corner that charged 60 THB/kg. and can have your laundry done by the end of the day (express service -120 THB/kg). We loved Stories Cafe for breakfast (a short 4 minute walk away). We arrived on a Sunday, just in time for Sunday Night Market! If you're in Chiang Mai on a Sunday night, don't miss it! The best thing about this property is its location.
• afdobinson (10/5): Wonderful Pub in a wonderful part of town. - Have now stayed here on and off for app 6 weeks over the last 14 months,the rooms are spacious,the beds comfy,the staff always friendly and the pool is a delight after a days walking/golfing or just chilling out. The hotel is situated in a quiet Soi close to markets ,restaurants and pubs.I can't recommend this place highly enough!
• DenimDeparture (8/5): Great option on quiet street in the middle of Chiang Mai old town - The location of Vieng Mantra is absolutely great, just inside the walls off the old town in Chiang Mai. We walked to all of the sights in the old town, plenty of great restaurants and bars within walking distance too and because it sits on a small narrow street just off the main street, it is really nice and quiet which makes from great quality sleeps. The room itself was perfect with a comfortable bed, large bathroom with a good hot shower and everything was very clean. We didn't use the pool whilst we were there but that looked great too. I guess the only thing that would've made this a 9 or a 10 would've been better breakfast options. Currently only toast with butter and jam and some bananas were on offer. Not sure if this is still post pandemic issues or something. Still great they did offer something at least but it made us have to go out for some more breakfast each morning.

• barrile_skj (10/5): Awesome property, great location! - I stayed at Vieng Mantra for 7 nights and loved it. What a gorgeous little boutique hotel down a quiet little Soi in the Old city. It is very well priced for what it delivers. The rooms are spacious with a good sized bathroom and a lovely balcony, most overlooking the central pool. Housekeeping were super efficient, the girls at reception were lovely and spoke reasonable English. There’s a little tea/coffee station near reception, if you run out in your room. Bikes are available for rent at the front. Lerts is directly opposite, his food is excellent and he’s super charming. It is literally 150m from Tha Phae gate and so many sights in easy walking distance. What more could you want. Unfortunately I had a noisy neighbour which was annoying plus it was a little frustrating that the Wifi wasn’t automatic (meant you had to keep logging in). Other than these minor things, I would return here no hesitation. Awesome value for money!
• mozlof50200 (10/5): Great hotel and location - It's in the city center just 100m far from Taphae gate. The rooms are nice and clean. The swimming pool is small but enough after a long warm day of visit. There are many nice restaurants close to the hotel.
• verubb (2/5): Prostitutes and dishonest staff - I rarely write review for accommodation. Only if I really fell I need to. BE WARE: It’s a place where Thai prostitutes are allowed to “visit” foreign men in their rooms. I saw once a young Thai woman leaving in the evening, she came out of the room where a young foreigner was staying.. Another time I saw 2(!) Thai women leaving a room in the night where an old foreigner was staying. Disgusting. It’’ a guest house that presents itself as a hotel, which is really not. The staff is dishonest, I am talking mainly about the 3 people at the reception.. And their English is very basic. I booked the room at the time of lockdown. I got stuck in Thailand on my way to Japan. The choice of hotels in the centre of Ch M was limited, and they had a swimming pool, which I wanted. Good hotels in Ch. M. were closed. Well, the staff seemed to be nice at first (the first week I would say) even though they did not understand English. very much. It was very hard to communicate with them. Sometimes they do not understand at all so I gave it up. Later we agreed on lower price as I was going to stay for about a month. With the cleaning once a week., which , by the way, did not make any sense. The first cleaning went smoothly..When I asked in week for the cleaning again, the young woman at the reception wanted me to pay extra 100 bahts. iI had to remind her about our deal I made with the other woman at the reception. She called her I did not pay anything at the end but I felt really strange. And it was not about the money. She even did not apologise for the inconvenience. The room was quite big, facing the swimming pool. The furniture was old, and room badly needed painting, most probably all rooms as I checked another one with even worse walls so I decided to stay in the bigger room. Very old towels that once used to be white. Each room has a nice balcony that I used mainly for drying clothes. Otherwise the staff were very noisy in the afternoons and some evenings. Also, there were neighbours with a child coming ALMOST EVERY AFTERNOON and SCREAMING. Not talking, but screaming. Not the child, the woman and the female staff were screaming. Either the woman and the child were swimming and screaming or screaming at the reception when they were not swimming.. So I could not use the balcony, nor the swimming pool in the afternoons. I had to close the door to the room and switch on music not to ear their scream. Once also the owners came to swim with a child and they screamed 4 hours nonstop. I also met the owners once just by the entrance to the guest house. She pretended not seeing me, he gave a strange look. None of them greeted me. The swimming pool was open 9-9. i was swimming every night.and finished before 9. The water was quite cold the first month. One night, the night male receptionist was swimming with his girlfriend from 9 pm to 10.30 pm, were taking pictures in the pool, and were noisy. It was really weird. told about it the next day to the male daily receptionist. I think he even did not understand and said - You could swim anytime… - Or, it’s normal as later the night staff brought a friend twice and were swimming in the pool after 9 pm, when he started his shift…. I also complained about the screaming local people in the pool as there was a sign by the pool saying - Quiet in this area. I just asked if they could tell the people in the swimming pool to bear in mind there were guests staying in the rooms. There was me and one man, and later another foreigner stayed. It was weird that anybody who was not staying at the guest house could come and swim in the pool that belongs to the guest house and is meant for its guests. Also the staff was swimming some afternoon in the swimming pool, making noise like we were not there. I spent most of my time in the room with air plugs or nice music on all days long and working on my laptop.…..I hardly ever could open the door to the balcony in the afternoons because of the constant noise of the staff and their friends. They behaved like they were at home. Only mornings were mostly quiet so I could get fresh air into the room and did not had a feeling I was not locked in. The night receptionist kept doing noise after 9 pm when he started his shift. One night, he was talking on his phone from 9 pm 1.30 am., when I I gave up the chance of sitting on the balcony in the evenings at least. i complained again to the daily female receptionist. She promised to talk to him. The next night was the same - he was watching movie or listening music so loud that I could not open the door to the balcony, again. I still could hear him at 10.30 pm, when I went bed with my earplugs. The I asked the next day Joy (?), the female woman at the reception if she could tell him not to be noisy in the night. She said if I was not happy in the “hotel” I could find another one! She also said they were going to close the hotel and other nonsenses. She also said that I could not use the pool anymore….. If police comes I should quickly jump out of it! Complete nonsenses. Yes, one part of the hotel had already been closed when I came. the same as the restaurant. But they were and still are open. They were open, of course and still are. She apparently wanted me to leave as I was complaining too much. And a few days later, a couple stayed for 2 nights (by the way, an old foreigner and a Thai womanI, I had to listen to their sex one afternoon, even if I closed all the door) and another coupe came to ask about the accommodate and a price and she said - We are open. I was there at the moment as I just acme to pay. So they preferred a noisy receptionist to a paying guest. I just couldn’t believe how rude she was to me. In proper accommodation they would apologise and talk to the night receptionist so that he couldn’t bother guest anymore. She even said - I need to talk to him FIRST. (??) And secondly what? The staff have no education, absolutely no training. It looks like the owners hired their fronds or people who were available. and could say Hello. and towels.(One day there was another cleaner who did not understand the words “toilet paper”…. There is no management or anybody I could seriously talk to. Just the dishonest receptionists. And cleaners and helpers. . 3 of the male staff (helpers) never greeted me. Most of the time the staff were resting or sleeping on sofas by the reception. They were even talking to me while lying on the sofa! I am a woman, 57. You might be thinking about f I left. No. I did not find anything suitable. Most of the hotels were closed. I found some good hotels on agoda and booking and went to see them in person. They were closed! Plus, I had my vegan food delivered by a lovely Thai family from their restaurant nearby . It was close to a fruit market. Plus the swimming pool at least as there is no nature in Chiang Mai. So I stayed and dealt with the situation. Fortunately, I was very busy. I am a doctor and was writing a book about holistic healing there. 1 day after my last complaint about the night guard they talked to him and he calmed down. Joy asked me if he was quiet but did not apologise for the inconvenience. He was quite quiet. then. They have some terrible references. Then very nice references from this year. I thought the staff had been changed. No, it was not. .I could hear the other guy who was staying on the other side of the building on different floor when he was talking on the phone or moving the furniture. Cannot imagine the hotel being full. The 2 building are very close to each other and the swimming pool, too No privacy at all if the guest house is full or if there are more guests. I had a feeling I was staying in a psychiatric clinic, honestly. They were mostly on their phones, playing shooting games etc.Sleeping and resting on the sofas, doing nothing. It was UNBELIEVABLE. They only 2 nice people there were two cleaners, a woman Mali and a male cleaner. They were the only people there who always greeted me, even with a smile. They were also the only staff there who were sitting normally on the sofas when I cane to the reception. When Mali was there she also always brought me fresh towels, water and a toilet paper without reminding it every day. When she was off, it was pain. I always had to as them and remind them to bring me what I needed every day. i Once I asked the girl at the reception to bring me a few thing I needed. She came with a toilet paper.. So i had to ask her again to bring me towels and a mat and something else, that I had already asked for…Every day when Mail was not there for a few days. Really annoying. Plus, they cleaned the corridors where we as guests were staying very rarely. (I stayed almost 2 months, I was almost all the time in, and saw cleaning them the corridor and stairs with water twice……But they cleaned the empty room often… The palms on the balconies were crying for water… i was watering palms in the building we were staying at least. I travel a lot around the world for my work and pleasure too. 55 countries and still counting. From backpacking through Central and South America to upscale hotels in Dubai and Tahiti. But THAT WAS ONE OF THE WEIRDIEST EXPERIENCES EVER. WOULD NEVER STAY AGAIN. Not sure for whom is the guest house is. I would say it’s suitable for the staff. They seem to be home there. The reception is their living room. The swimming pool is open for them and everybody from outside so the guests have to watch when the pool is free and immediately jump in… I do not think this place is suitable for accommodating foreigners, honestly By the way, the night receptionist does not speak English at all…. fortunately nothing happened and I never needed to talk to him. Plus, the wifi was unstable.
• adamh977 (10/5): We loved our week long stay at Vieng Mantra. - We loved our week long stay at Vieng Mantra. The hotel is perfectly located near the Thae Pae Gate in Old City. The area is very walkable and there are countless restaurants, bars, markets and temples nearby. We recommend Youngfolk for coffee and the hotel's own Cooking Love restaurant for lunch and dinner. Superb local food at great prices. Our room was spotless, spacious and peaceful with a lovely balcony and a comfortable bed. I particularly enjoyed the high pressure shower. Staff were always friendly, smiling and quick to sort out any issues. We were given two bottles of water a day and the mini-bar prices were very reasonable. The centrally located pool was fantastic! We came back mid-afternoon everyday for a refreshing swim and a cool down. The complementary breakfast was nothing special, but did the job. The only downside was the intermittent wi-fi. Despite this we would highly recommend staying here and will certainly return on our next visit to beautiful Chiang Mai.
• mandylou1981 (8/5): Great place to stay - We really enjoyed our stay here. The staff were so friendly and smiley. The location was perfect. Cooking love restaurant food was fantastic quality. Huge bed in the room. Pool was a great bonus. Air con could be cooler and pillows but otherwise absolutely nothing negative to say. Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable.
• roses4me2 (10/5): Little Gem - We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. It is well located near to the Thae Pae Gate so very handy to Wororot market and the Night Market and the Sunday walking street. Our room overlooked the pool and was spacious and well presented. No elevator so you do have to climb the stairs but worth the effort for this hotel. The restaurant Cooking Love served a good breakfast and we loved our dinners there. The pool was a bit cool but apparently it is Well Water and it was pristine and clean with no overpowering chlorine smell so worth the initial shock! The staff were very efficient and friendly. And Ernie went out of his way to make some enquires about where to source fabrics for me. We would definitely stay here again if we are fortunate enough to travel back to Chiang Mai.
• NiamhC2 (8/5): Nice for quick trip - Very nice staff, pool area. Location, breakfast and rooms ok. Perfect for a short trip. We stayed for 2 nights, you get what you pay for. I would recommend this as you’ll spend more time out of the room than in the room in Chiang Mai, not only that but you are supporting a Thai business instead of a chain hotel. I would come back. Thank you to the friendly staff.
• roleycsl (10/5): Loved our 15 day stay - We absolutely loved staying at this hotel. The staff were so helpful, kind, and polite. On our first night, were having debit card issues with our bank back in United States. We couldn’t get through to our bank until Monday and they were gracious enough to let us stay until everything was worked out with the bank. It’s a perfect location to the Sunday night market, restaurants, bars, and pharmacies, and coffee shops, etc. Every room comes with a small balcony it just depends upon the few that you want. Our balcony was facing the street which is great, so we could sit outside, sip coffee and watch all the people go by. It took us about 12 days to realize that there were three different Internet access points. When we first arrived they gave us the Internet password just to the registration desk. That Internet would come on and off sporadically throughout the day and night. Use the Internet codes that are listed in the restaurant area those stay on all the time and are stronger. The pool in the morning and the afternoon was very refreshing and very nice just to sit out and relax. Even though the breakfast was the same type of items each day it was always fresh and tasty. as others have stated, we’ve never ate in the restaurant for lunch or dinner but they were always packed and most the times you had to have a reservation to eat there. We would highly recommend staying here.
• PKyi (10/5): A Comfortable place to stay, conveniently located in Chiang Mai old city. - If you are looking for a comfortable place with reasonable pice, conveniently located close to the Sunday night walking market or the Chiang Mai main night market, Vieng Mantra is the place to stay. We stayed here for 2 nights and 3 days at the hotel. it happened to be on the weekend so we were able to catch then Sunday night walking market which was on the same Rachdamneon Road as the hotel. Many Chiang Mai old city sites are within walking distance. We had a pool view room, where our balcony overlooked the pool. The bed was comfortable and the room was very clean. The "Cooking Love" restaurant served authentic delicious Thai food. There is also a BBQ restaurant across the street from the hotel that was cooking delicious looking pork skewers and whole fish. Take the time to walk along the narrow "Soi"s (streets) around the hotel to be a good sense of Chiang Mai.
• MarkKingscliff (10/5): People keep coming back - Vieng Mantra is a great place to stay in Chiang Mai. Charming and helpful staff at the hotel and the ground floor 'Cooking Love Restaurant' which serves excellent meals (with a separate Cooking Love just down the road). Rooms are well equipped, quiet, clean and comfortable (I had a room in the back wing overlooking the pool). Located in the old city, it is close to walking markets, street food and local attractions, but be careful when choosing which ethical animal parks to visit.
• jacquelineeeeeeeeeee (10/5): Was very happy....:) - The Hotel is in a great central location and the rooms were very nice and renovated. I had a nice balcony with pool view and a confortable bench... Bed was super confortable, which is very important for me! The restaurant down in the groundfloor is delicious (I had Mango curry and coconut curry the other day, which was served in a coconut ;) the staff was super nice, thanks Aom, Ten and Nut!!
