Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good central location - Central location in La Fortuna, good communal space area. The hotel has been recently rebranded to Societel - the private room was decent overall and has an A/C, but the overall room is clearly a bit worn out. There are food and drinks onsite but lots more choice in town especially if you’re looking for local food.
We didn’t book tours as we wanted to do the sites ourselves, we travelled by uber to the volcano entrance, waterfall and hot springs - which was pretty easy if you don’t have a car!
- Nicole (8/5): - Stayed in one of the cabins — it had a rip in the screen and we got eaten alive by bugs overnight. Didn’t seem worth the money, especially because the “hostel” no longer has a kitchen. Slightly weird vibe. Great location though
- Stephanie (6/5): - I stayed in a teepee, which was just as cute as pictured. It was quite small though, pretty much just enough room to lay in the bed. I struggled to sleep well because the fan was in the corner of the room by the head of the bed, and the height of the fan made it so the top of it rested on the teepee which made a less than peaceful noise when it was on, which led me to turn it off. The property itself was pretty, but the bathrooms were quite old and in need of a renovation. I have never seen a hand dryer that had to be plugged into the wall, and when I did plug it in, it still didn't work. The people who worked in the bar were not friendly (not mean, but not really warm or welcoming) which surprised me for what I had heard about Selina's/Socialtels from a friend who stayed in the past. I think for the price of the accomodation, there is room for improvement.
- Erica (6/5): - This property is cute, and fun. Not the most chic or the most squeaky clean, but a great value overall. The staff was very attentive, and there were a lot of options for everything: food, spa, tours… also very centrally located!
- Asif (10/5): - Beautiful property, garden, pool, and restaurant area. My room was nice and clean, front desk was always helpful with guidance, and arranging trips. Overall a good experience
- Ryan (10/5): Very Impressed! - Very impressed with how nice our private deluxe room was. Bed was comfortable, shower was nice and big, and everything was clean. They offered complementary drinks every day, had a nice big pool, a full kitchen space to access, and free parking. The location is right in the middle of town so you can walk to everything. Would definitely recommend this place for your visit to La Fortuna.
- Amin (6/5): - Underwhelming room in a pretty good area with lots of restaurants in walking distance.
- Andrea (8/5): - Not as good as the other Selina’s in Latin America but still good. Quiet, food expensive but overall nice hotel with friendly staff. However local children do come in to use the pool so that area is not quiet.
- Michael (8/5): - The hotel was a good basic clean room. I'd stay there again. Great central location.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We stayed in the Teepee. It was pretty cool but quite small. Also ours did not have a mosquito net...
- Travis (6/5): - Everything costs extra. There was noone in the pool because it costs an extra 20 a day
- AHMET (10/5): - Great place, I had so much fun!
- Lihi (4/5): Would not recommend - Stayed at the micro room. It is too small to fit more than 1 person. Our air conditioner was leaking all night, and the night stand fell on me in the middle of the night and my water glass broke. I complained to the reception but they didn’t care. We paid extra to move to a standard room. The room is located right by the dorms so it was very loud all day and night, we got woken up at 6 every day. There was no community life at all. Yoga was cancelled every day, Coworking space is extra charge. To conclude, there wasn’t any benefit to staying at a hostel as we ended up paying the same as we would’ve paid in a hotel and we didn’t get to meet anyone as there was no community or ambiance at all. Would not recommend
- Yang (10/5): - Comfortable rooms and lots of amenities on-premise. Slightly far from the bus stop for airport or for other places in Costa Rica (but still walk-able), but close to the National Museum and it's not like there's many other things to see in San Jose.
- Gerardine Abreu (10/5): - It was my first time actually staying in a Hostel, I was actually very happy to be Selina my first, it was a chill place so don’t expect much party, food and drinks in the restaurant were great, I didn’t use the community kitchen or fridge so can’t really comment on that,
Staff was very friendly and welcome, coming solo to La fortuna Selina made it great a great experience.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Incredibly good private rooms for a hostel and great value compared to the other town centre alternatives. For us, it felt like a hotel as we were keeping ourselves to ourselves at the beginning of the trip. Selina noted it was our honeymoon and decorated the bed with flowers which was really appreciated the night before transferring to Tortuguero.
We also stayed two days in a premium room prior to staying at Tabacon for one night and returning back. The previous Selina booking was via another booking provider and the more premium room was one of our favourites in Costa Rica as it had a balcony, was spacious and had a huge smart tv!
Breakfast options were limited but were good. One can sit at high tables that overlook the small river to the rear of the property. Wear insect repellent in the earlier hours as insects were a little energetic. You can watch leaf cutter ants decent the tree, birds fishing and even otters play in the water.
The reception staff could have been slightly more enthusiastic and knowledgeable of the local area :)
Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend staying her to anymore.
- Meghana (10/5): - Very accessible
- Sudarshan (10/5): - 4 bed dorm is close to the road and super noisy. People are good, wonderful stuff.
- Bonnie (10/5): - Would stay again
- Bonnie (10/5): - We enjoyed our stay very much would recommend
- Fatima (10/5): - Limpio, baños compartidos pero privados
- Cindy (10/5): - Very happy with how spacious and clean the Selina was! Staff were very friendly and welcoming. It's right in the middle of town so everything is walking distance and they have a lot of organized tours available. Would stay again!
- Olivia (10/5): Welcoming and chilled - Really well set up. Gorgeous pool and open kitchen for hanging out. Staff are super friendly and helpful. I hadn’t stayed in a hostel in over 10 years, so was unsure about what a dorm would be like. No worries - totally chilled. To any other solo travelers in their mid-30s - this place is fab.
- moussa (10/5): - Absolutely incredible experience. I would love to stay here again. BOOK NOW!
Downtown is a few steps away and the volcano is literally on the same street.
- Jordan (10/5): - Selina is an amazing hostel experience, no matter where you stay. We always enjoy the stay
- Camilo (8/5): - Nice property but felt they lack to execute on VIP Benefits commitments. They tried to pull off the welcome drink as their 2 drink commitment — After discussion manager agreed but this should have never been the case. I did not get credit for the previous night when they failed to tell me about my free drinks. Also when asked about room upgrade as part of VIP membership they told me they would look into it and never executed. Lastly the room was to have daily cleaning (service) and this was never done. Overall very disappointing!
- Hazel (10/5): - Selina’s in La Fortuna is amazing! I had a single room with a great view of Arenal Volcano. I slept like a baby in the comfortable bed!
My only tiny issue was how dark the lighting in the bathroom was. Overall I had a fantastic time and made new friends!
- Shania (10/5): - Amazing place, close to the town and such kind people working and staying there too
- Verified traveler (8/5): Comfortable but not clean - Great location, space for parking, comfortable room but pretty noisy and the floor was filthy and sticky. Made the mistake of wiping it with the white bath mat and it really wasn’t white anymore after that. The lighting looked cool but rather dark, which could be improved.
- S (10/5): - Great hostel.
- Kayla (10/5): My Personal Experience - Selina was nice, however a little more expensive than I think it was worth. I felt that the staff were a little disorganized. They were very friendly though and I appreciated the help I got with bringing my bags to and from my room! The breakfast was alright, however I think could use a little more flavor!
I didn'y use the pool. It was a nice size though and the parties there were fun. I didn'y spend much time on the property during my 3 nights there.
I was in a room with my own bathroom. The whole room was nice and a good size. The bed wasn't as comfortable as I would like and the pillows were also not great for my neck!
Overall a great place, I just think maybe they should charge a little less for the type of room I booked.
- avi (6/5): - The explanation of the place's services is not given. Just a key. I did not know that I deserved breakfast and not on all the activities
- Setareh (6/5): Maybe Never Again - As beautiful as the property is, our stay was somewhat disappointing. To start off, masks are not enforced at all here, most of the staff did not wear masks when near guests. Fine. We got a teepee room which was advertised with A/C. The teepee has little to no room for yourself, let alone luggage and has a fan, but no A/C, which is sweltering, especially if you are with another person. Everyday, the river near by begins to smell like feces, which infiltrates the teepee making it completely suffocating. Luckily, we voiced our concerns and they moved us to a deluxe room which was great. Upon a few hours in our new room, a front desk staff member (not a maid) opened our door and saw me naked. Don’t know why he was coming into our room, or why he did not knock. At the restaurant, the food was very inconsistent. I didn’t like my frozen banana bowl because it was warm and soupy. I asked for oatmeal instead, but they just brought me back a cold soupy banana bowl. I scheduled a spa day 2 days in advance. When I checked in to my appointment, it seemed as though they forgot they scheduled me. They called the masseuse because she was not on the premises, which led to my appointment being pushed to half an hour later. The masseuses was very nice and my massage was great. It seems as though the front desk functions off of personal laptops. To end things on a good note, the premises are nice. the tourist desk girl was very helpful and they offer fair prices. Maybe never again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great staff, location. Teepee room was adorable, comfortable & clean. The property has a fun, local character. Staff made it easy to book excursions. I met great people. I saw a toucan in the tree above my teepee. That was amazing!
- Caroline (10/5): - Amazing space with a great gathering area & happy hour! Our deluxe room had amazing artwork & was very thoughtfully decorated. The staff was super nice & I very much enjoyed my time in La Fortuna
- stephanie (10/5): - Our stay at Selina was amazing! We liked it so much we ended up extending our stay several nights. We had a private room that was very cute and clean. Amenity spaces were great. Luis at the front desk was always available to help and very accommodating. Also a good place to stay if you want to meet other travelers.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Como siempre un excelente servicio y lugar, muy buen ambiente
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Modern, funky, fun place to stay. Comfortable bed and pillows. We stayed in the deluxe room, a little more spacious and private. They seem to have a lot of options for travelers of all budgets, hostel type rooms and camping. If I was a young backpacker on a budget the shared bathrooms and kitchen areas looked really nice. Many nice lounge areas and pool. Pretty quiet too. Close to the center of town, so very walkable to eateries and shopping.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Extremely expensive. The tent is super tiny and cost around $150 per night. The picture is fake.
- ynah (10/5): - A great place to meet fellow travelers. Perfect fit for young and middle age travelers
- Benita (6/5): It’s a hostel - This is a hostel, not a hotel so make sure your aware of that before booking. In our experience people were very loud and constantly slamming doors in the hallway. The towels have orange/brown stains supposedly because other guest take them to the springs. If this is the case then it’s not the hotels fault. The staff is very nice except for the guys at the front desk at night, not friendly, not welcoming and not helpful (don’t have their names) The rooms are ok and kind of small. The common area feels dirty and it’s always crowded, so if you are there to meet people it’s a good thing. The location is great.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Great location and views. The single room in this Selina was ok by hostel standards but not as nice as the one in La Fortuna.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location, very comfortable common areas, room was great.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Weekend stay - We came for a few days while visiting the area. I didn't realize it was going to be so quiet. We thought it might be a bit rowdier but it was good for what we needed. Big focus on working remote and tourism. I would go back for a weekend for sure.
- VALERIE (10/5): Beautiful, but... - I had a private room, it was clean and comfortable. Overall place is clean and beautiful. However, my room was in between a shared bathroom and a dorm, meaning it was always very busy and noisy. Also the swinging chairs in front of my room make the most horrible sound, especially when drunk people just hang out there late at night...
Restaurant on site is good but reaaaaaally pricey, especially at night. A simple nachos was 5500 colones...
- Mari (10/5): - This was the first time my boyfriend and I stayed on a hostel and we loved it. We spent two nights in a tepee and it was great. The staff is very friendly and the food is amazing. It is budget friendly and delicious.
- Bryan (10/5): Awesome experience! - Our stay at Selina was excellent. We stayed at the tepes and they are magical, lovely and totaly recommended. I have a toursim tours company called Spotin tours in Puerto Rico so to me customer service is a must. The crew at Selina was a 10/10 as they did a great job. Very good location.
- Matthew (10/5): - Very comfortable, good value, nice facilities and helpful staff
- Eduardo (10/5): - The reception team was amazing! One of the reasons why I am visiting again!
- Charles (10/5): Great Environment and Location - Staff Not So Much - Great environment and location. Really enjoyed our visit in La Fortuna. Staff was not very welcoming or friendly, but the rest of our experience was great.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - My boyfriend and I are still raving about our experience at Selina. The inviting decor created such a fun community where travelers of all types could have fun relax and party.
The facilities and amenities were amazing. They have it all, quiet work space, yoga, movie room, library!
Their cocktails were excellent (i liked the sunburnt pina colada)
The location was also perfect. Right in town and lets you experience La Fortuna like a local.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We enjoyed our stay at Selina La Fortuna and loved the atmosphere of the hostel! Our room was very clean and the property was beautiful. The food and drinks were excellent as well.
Unfortunately I did not enjoy one warm shower during my stay, which was a major disappointment.
The staff were also very unfriendly and unprofessional. On many occasions 4-5 of the staff members would be huddled around the front desk, caught up in their own conversation and would not acknowledge us for 5 minutes. When we did get their attention, they seemed annoyed that we interrupted their fun.
- Roque (10/5): A must when you travel to Costa Rica! - Well...SELINA hotels have just become our favorites around the globe! Each one of them offers eclectic rooms and very originals! The guests create a great vibe having drinks together and playing board games, volleyball and many other activities! It is also clean, spacious bedrooms and perfect wifi and aircon! The breakfast are perfect and big and their own brewed beer cannot be missed!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lots of people, super cute decor, friendly vibe, great food & drinks
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Selina was perfect for our stay in La Fortuna - amazing location in the centre of town and close to all the restaurants and attractions, the room and common areas were really nicely designed, and overall great value. We stayed in the deluxe room which was perfect for a couple, and even had a balcony! The downsides were the parking - the car park wasn’t big enough which meant a lot of back and forth with reception rearranging parking and one night we had to park our car on the road. It’s also very loud at night with noise from the bar so probably not the best choice for light sleepers.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Everything the staff is amazingly professional. The place is always clean, although they were doing renovations.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - We had stayed at Selina Monteverde which was amazing so we assumed Selina La Fortuna would be as well. We stayed in a private queen bed room. The bed was actually a double and very firm mattress, not a queen, and they put us in the wheelchair accessible room. Honestly I don’t know how a wheelchair could even fit in there, the only part of it that was wheelchair accessible was the size of the door and the wheel in shower.. there wasn’t even enough floor space to put our luggage down. We stayed there for two nights but on the second day we had asked if there’s a chance to move rooms. They seemed a little annoyed but moved us to another available private room. This private room did have a queen bed and it was a lot more comfy, this room was a lot larger and more comfortable. It is a hostel, but Selina is one of the higher end hostels so don’t be afraid to ask for something that’s more comfortable for you. The check-out went smoothly and the lady at the front desk had apologized for the inconvenience of the first room. A refund would’ve been nice but that probably wasn’t an option for them since we had pre paid. The bar and lounge as well as the pool were great!! Didn’t spend much time at the hostel though! So much to see!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This property is really unique and clean. We got a private room and both the bed and the shower were amazing. The only inconvenience was the lack of a hairdryer, but I guess I can survive without that.
- JOE (10/5): - The atmosphere was fun and chill. You could prop up in a hammock or hammock chair and relax, or play pool, watch a movie on the outdoor screen, play volleyball in the pool, etc. plenty of activities available. Great drinks and food at the bar. Staff was very helpful in discussing tours.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property was gorgeous. The teepees at night are magical.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Disappointed - The staff is pretty rude and not able to help in many occasions. Their facilities are great (cinema room, pool, bonfire pit). The restaurant won’t let you sit with your food. The kitchen is usually messy and dirty. Shared bathrooms are pretty small.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Its was a glorified hostel, in a good way! So much fun to hangout with people your age and get to know others from around the world
- Michael (6/5): - This is a youth hostel, with the emphasis on 'Youth'. It is a young party place! If you want that vibe, which we did, it is an ideal place to stay. We had a few issues though; the front desk staff were absolutely useless, on 2 occasions our shower just ran out of water and stopped working, the tour agency in the building tried to rip us off with taxis, the walls are paper thing so you hear everything from your neighbors.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Stayed at the room right next to the reception. It is a nightmare when trying to sleep at night. Very very loud noise until 1am. People are screaming and talking very loudly. More like a bar rather than a place to rest your body and get ready for next day’a adventure. Complained to the people in reception at about 12am, and they said they couldn’t do anything about it. The window in the room can’t even be fully closed. The reception also is not helpful at all, they don’t have bandaids. Stay here if you are ok with few hours of sleep or you want to make friends or you are ok to sleep after 1am.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - good for the price. you pay for the experience and the people.
- edith (10/5): Fun at selina - Amazing time! Fun place to stay! great food:) Chill and friendly atmosphere. Had a great experience here, that we booked selina in another location as well!
- Abigail (10/5): - Gorgeous hotel / hostel / coworking space conveniently located in La Fortuna. Helpful, friendly staff who can organize excursions and give good recommendations of what to do in the area. I stayed in one of the teepees and had a fabulous glamping experience, with the pool, restaurant and amenities just steps away. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area as a great value and good place to stay if you want to meet other adventure seekers!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great stay in La Fortuna - The hostel was very clean and well decorated. The bar/restaurant is convenient, but a little overpriced for breakfast. The staff is very friendly and easy to communicate with. I highly recommend this hostel!
- Charlotte (10/5): 10/10 - Overall it was a brilliant hostel, lovely rooms (although the teepee’s could have been bigger) and the facilities were all fine. Would stay there again, had everything a hostel needs.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - So the place looks amazing, no doubt about that, BUT, we left very very disappointed.
We took the private room with shared bathroom and it's tiny - 9sq meter (our fault for not checking, looks big in the picture).
On trip advisor someone left a review saying there was no hot water in the showers, so before booking, I called to make sure that there is hot water. I was told that in a part of the place there is a problem but they will put us where there is no problem. Checked that again at the reception, went to the shower to check, and there was hot water.
When I showered at 23:00, I had hot water for 30 seconds, then freezing 4-5 minutes, again 30 seconds hot water, and 4-5 minutes freezing. It was awful...
The hostel looks great but is made of "shipping containers" or at least that's how the ceiling looks. The walls between the rooms are made of cast, you can hear someone whispering outside your room and people walking in the room above you.
Close to the reception there is a staff member who sells tours. We got sold a 55$ (each) !!!! night tour of the jungle and were told that it includes a dinner (seemed expensive, but dinner included sounds good) with a local family. The "dinner" was 2 small black beans empanadas and a sugar cane ginger drink.
Parking - there are 7 parking spots. We got lucky and one was free when we got there, but that's up to luck!
TL;DR - place looks great but not even close to being worth the 59$ that we paid for it.
- CATravels (6/5): - The atmosphere at Selina is great; however throughout my stay there was no hot water at all. Additionally, during my final night staff came in the room around 1:00 am turned on all the lights and woke everyone up because the guest that arrived for the last bed was unsure of which bunk to take despite there only being one left. I feel like the situation could have been handled much better with no lights and loud talking so as not to disturb the 9 sleeping guests. If you’re planning a tour or transportation make sure you book it through the desk and not through the app or website or the staff will try to charge you multiple times.
- Kell (10/5): Beautiful Salina! - A great hostel with almost everything a reasonable person could want, all at a great price. Loads of the young and adventurous, but even an old dude like me can enjoy a beautiful spot like Selina 😁
- Verified traveler (10/5): Very nice place - Amazing tent, new and clean.
- Cecilia (10/5): Photoshoot-worthy hostel - Be prepared to take lots of pictures. This place is adorable!!
I personally enjoy the privacy & comfort of a hotel, but I prefer the demographic of a hostel. Selina was perfect for all my needs! I opted for the deluxe room with a private bathroom & it was spacious, modern, clean & gorgeous. From the friendly staff, to fun, young people (locals & fellow travelers), to the amazing food, Selina is the perfect place for young adults to come and feel like this is the place to be. I’ll definitely be back. I hope to find more Selina hostels in more parts of the world very soon!
- Jose (10/5): Nice place, nice staff - Great place, near everything and awesome staff. I stayed at the tepees and they are really nice, even under a heavy rain I felt warm and secure
