- 87SCuba (10/5): Absolutely Wonderful - Extended Our Stay - This was our best accommodation experience during our week in Iceland. We hadn't booked accommodation for our last night and decided to extend at Umi because we loved it so much. The staff were all so warm and welcoming from the manager to the housekeeping team, reception, and the restaurant - and they didn't make me feel bad for breaking a wine glass in our room. Great location for exploring. We especially loved the big breakfast spread, cozy robes and slippers, and we had some fantastic Northern Lights viewings right outside of the hotel. Definitely make it out to the black sand beach while you're there! Thank you Umi team for being a highlight of our honeymoon, we hope to return!
- JennieO103 (10/5): Horses Under the North Lights - My boyfriend and I stayed here for two nights, during which we got engaged. The staff was so lovely, from the front desk keeping champagne cold in our room for our return by changing the ice every half hour, to another staff member point out the Northern Lights, to the head chef presenting us with each dish at the restaurant and his lovely wife, a waitress, sharing stories about Icelandic life with us. The setting is beyond beautiful, and we had horse visitors snuffling at our open window one night. We will never forget how we felt in this magical place.
- amgray2018 (10/5): Amazing property - From the beautiful architecture, furnishings, lovely staff, Michelin star restaurant, and setting this hotel had everything we wanted. The hotel was within 15 min of Reynisfjara Beach, Vik and Black Sands Beach. Skógafoss was also within driving distance. Their Michelin star restaurant did not disappoint, we enjoyed every bite. They have their beach that we didn’t get to enjoy but will be back!

The views of the mountains were stunning and the location is so close to many tourist locations. We will be back again!

We had dinner at the hotel, as it’s quite removed from a ‘town’ (as many other hotels in Iceland are!) and the food was so amazing (Michelin star quality and presentation). Beautiful location with gorgeous view of mountains and glacier. Very quiet.

Amenities were excellent, we ended up buying some Soley products at the airport same as what we had at Umi. Breakfast has good selection. In the morning, as a bonus, horses visited us outside our room window, they were very beautiful. Check out was at 11 but reception lady let us check out at 12. Location is perfect as near all the tourist spots we wanted to experience. Will definitely recommend. Thank you Umi!

Unlike most other hotel restaurants - especially those that you have to eat at, for lack of other nearby choices - this was, hands down, the most fabulous meal we’ve ever eaten. Unforgettable! the attention to detail of each item on the plate was extraordinaryl Yes, Iceland expensive, but a treat for the senses that shouldn’t be missed. We had the lamb and the artic char.

Comfortable bed, and robes and slippers. The breakfast was excellent and the 2 dinners we had were excellent as well! We particularly enjoyed the horses coming up to our window to visit. Also the trail to the beach was a fantastic walk in the brisk cold air. We would love to come back someday and visit if we are ever in Iceland again. Thank you so much!

My initial impression was that the hotel was boxy and unimpressive but the excellent service, serene design and fantastic restaurant quickly changed that impression. Located in a large plain, there are amazing views of the adjacent mountains. They will notify you of northern lights appearance if requested. We enjoyed the sauna. Highly recommend the hotel and would stay return if we visit the area again.

- Susan (10/5): - From the moment we arrived, we felt welcome. The staff were always attentive and friendly while still being down to earth. Both breakfast and dinner were just lovely, with locally sourced ingredients and creative cocktails. The sauna and yoga room proved necessary at the end of each day of hiking and exploring the area - it’s so close to Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Solheimajökull, Reynisfjara, and Vik. This is a beautiful property, with awe-inspiring scenery from every angle, so bring your camera. The walk to the beach takes a bit longer than they say, but it’s worth it. We got lucky early on our first evening with a short but unexpected burst of aurora activity - just standing outside looking at the stars in the right place at the right time! - but they do have a wake-up service for anyone wishing to see the northern lights when they start up. My only (minor) demerit was for the bed comfort, but it’s certainly not the worst I’ve had in Iceland or anywhere else in Europe, so it’s barely worth mentioning. I will definitely return to UMI! <3

- greggegen (10/5): Umi Experience = Sublime - This property was a wonderful surprise...setting was superb and building was quietly stylish with a sense of relaxed luxury and Icelandic character. Rooms, reception, bar, dining area and yoga/sauna area were all comfortable and nicely detailed. Very modern fittings in bathrooms with excellent shower and most comfortable bed. Outlook to the mountains or coastal plain were both stunning landscapes. Service was utterly professional and efficient but very personable and relaxed. The cuisine was extremely good and uniquely inspired by local ingredients and presentation flair.

I had one of the best dinners I’ve had in Iceland. Breakfast was also delicious, with a wide selection of products at the buffet — there’s something for everyone. After breakfast, we took a walk to their private black sand beach and were lucky enough to spot a whale by the shore! It felt like a dream. 💕 I would definitely come back when visiting Iceland again!

Meals in restaurant hit or miss (gnocchi was inedible not only for me but a lady at a nearby table said she had sent it back the night before). During the day, ironing boards are out in the hallway for the linens - have never seen this before. The welcome gift of a bottle sparking wine was a miniature for 2 guests. Overall disappointing and would not be back.

The hotel is easy to find, staff were incredibly kind and helpful, the hotel is clean and has all amenities needed. Breakfast was delicious and the restaurant is beautiful. We were able to use the laundry service which was an extra benefit. Don't miss the sauna - floor to ceiling windows with an incredible view. Cocktails at the bar were delicious! We were so happy to start and end each day at UMI. (Only thing we missed was having a hot tub, but the sauna was wonderful)
- Susan (10/5): - Beautiful, small boutique hotel in great location off the Ring road route near Skógafoss and 30 min from Dyrhólaey and black sand beach. Staff is lovely and dinner is great. It is somewhat isolated so dining at the hotel is the easiest as it’s probably a 40 minute drive to Vik. There is a 15 min private walk on property to black sand beach with virtually no one in sight for miles - stunning. At night horses came from the nearby farm to drink from the little pond outside our window and guests were feeding them. A great, peaceful hotel.

- JennE1101 (10/5): Amazing Stay - This was by far our favorite hotel in Iceland. It is quite small (maybe 35 rooms), and feels very remote, but it was just what we needed. Iceland was experiencing crazy weather during our visit, so driving became a chore. The staff at Umi was friendly and inviting. They took care of every ones of our needs and were very friendly. Our room needed and extra bed, so we enjoyed happy hour at the small bar. They do not have hot tubs yet, but they do have a spa where you can book a massage. My daughter said it was great. It's a 20 minute walk to the beach, but it is flat and easy. The black sand is remarkable. We ate at the hotel and the food was the best we experienced in Iceland. The rooms are clean and comfortable. Even with the "midnight sun" and insane winds outside, the room was relaxing and quite. I'm hoping to come back for the Northern Lights in the winter and will definitely book a stay at this hotel.
- MichalinaJ24 (10/5): A Vegan Heaven with End-of-the-World Views 🌋 - I arrived thinking, “Great, another trip of sad tomatoes and dry lettuce,” but wow — culinary knockout! The vegan options here are out of this world — creative, filling, and so delicious I seriously considered proposing to the chef. Sadly, he’s already married. To the lovely woman who also works there… and makes cocktails so good I forgave her immediately. The staff? Absolutely amazing — friendly, relaxed, no fake smiles, just good vibes. The views? Like landing on another planet — mountains, space, silence, and that raw Icelandic magic. Perfect spot to actually breathe for once. Highly recommended for anyone who thinks being vegan in Iceland is like being a penguin in the desert. Nope — I bloomed here like kale on a volcano. 🥬🔥

- hmaddix5 (10/5): Stay here! - My husband and I stayed here for two nights in June, as we wanted something outside of Reykjavik but not in Vik. The property is beautiful, and the service is excellent. We enjoyed a tasty dinner at the restaurant and are still thinking about the soup! The hotel is only about a 15 minute drive from Skogafoss and 35 from Vik, but you feel like you are in your own world. We can't recommend Hotel Umi enough!

The room was cozy with stunning views, and everything was spotless and thoughtfully prepared. The food was a true highlight. Dinner was outstanding, with fresh local ingredients and beautifully presented dishes. Breakfast was just as impressive, with plenty of delicious options to start the day right. The location is unbeatable. A peaceful walk to the nearby beach offered breathtaking scenery and total tranquility. We also loved the sauna experience—relaxing with views of the mountains—and the massage was one of the best we’ve ever had. Hotel Umi is a perfect mix of luxury, comfort, and Icelandic charm. Can’t recommend it enough—would return in a heartbeat!

- Victoria100000 (2/5): Find another hotel - ⸻ Unfortunately, this hotel did not meet our expectations. The atmosphere felt more like a dormitory than a relaxing getaway. The blackout shades were also insufficient. We dined at the restaurant and ordered the Arctic char, gnocchi, and lava cake—unfortunately, each dish was so underwhelming that we could only manage a few bites. The coffee was equally disappointing and practically undrinkable. Overall, the experience fell far short of what we had hoped for.
- artisright (6/5): Find somewhere cheaper to stay - This hotel, relative to others in the area, is not worth the price. They aim to be a higher-end boutique hotel, but one where the staff and services fall short of true luxury. A boutique is typically described by its size. We checked in a bit late; there were no front staff people, only one kitchen staff member. When asked when breakfast is, they don't know and can't provide an answer. When asked for the Wi-Fi, they are unsure. This hotel is quite expensive, even for just a one-night stay. With late check-in and moderate checkout, there are properties nearby that offer better value for a cheaper price. Also, if you insist on staying here, don't book the ocean view; you'll mostly see land and a sliver of the ocean before you see the sky. You are better off booking the mountain view because it is gorgeous. But like I said, I don't recommend a stay here. The staffs need to improve a lot. Also, the floors in the hallway give me a double-take, at first it looks like unfinished concrete, but it is a different material.
- mytraveldiaree (8/5): Nature and peace follows you here - Opt for this place if you want to follow nature with inner peace. The hotel is away from the highway and away from any other property but close enough to nature. All rooms structured on ground floor facing the mountains or the open grasslands towards the sea. The laundry opens at 9am and closes at 5pm at a charge of 6000 ISK for a bag full of soiled clothes. Unfortunately the rooms donot have telephone. So everytime you need anything, one has to walk down to the reception.

I was also amazed by the food in the restaurant. Very fresh and high quality. Hotel and restaurant are not cheap and believe it would therefore be better to make the sauna free (not the private one). On top it was a pity the bikes advertised were not available in the hotel at all. Staff was nice so overall a great stay.

The staff was professional, efficient, and friendly and we had a lovely experience from the moment we checked in to the time we checked out. The rooms were nicely furnished and had every amenity as well as excellent views. The bed was very comfortable and breakfast was included. The hotel is also in a great location just a few minutes from Skjoagifoss and the Skogar museum.

Nestled in breathtaking Icelandic nature, the views are unreal, a perfect blend of ocean, mountains, and tranquility. The service is truly world-class: warm, attentive, and personal without being intrusive. Every detail is thought through. And the food? Absolutely Michelin-worthy. Every course was a masterpiece, locally inspired and executed with precision. Umi sets the bar for what luxury should be, if you’re traveling to Iceland, this place is a must. The have a unique sauna where you can Enter the nearby river to ice bath between the hot times! Absolute amazing!
- tjstruhs (10/5): Outstanding - We spent 7 days in Iceland, staying at 6 different hotels from Reykjavik to Glacier Lagoon. The Umi Hotel was a stand out stay for us. The staff was welcoming and generous. The location was superb and the facilities were outstanding. We had a great dinner with them and the breakfast was everything you could want. In talking with friends and family after our trip we speak fondly about our short but excellent stay here. Thank you for the memories!

- vygurl (8/5): Hotel in Hvolsvollur, Iceland - Stayed here recently for two nights—the standard room is small! And even requesting for 1 bed, they gave us two twin beds side by side. The bathroom is small too. But the overall decor was modern. Their ventilation system in the bathroom must connect directly to the outside because when it was windy outside the vent kept making banging metal noises which was super annoying—even closing the bathroom door didn’t help much. I complained to the front desk but they said this was normal. Service was good. It’s seems like the staff there do multiple jobs, running around doing everything. Staff were friendly and helpful. There’s a small bar right by the front desk—they have happy hour too from 3-5pm! Didn’t get to try the restaurant since we stepped out every evening to Vik, but I saw the complimentary breakfast buffet and it looked appetizing—but only got a cup of coffee. The hotel is secluded off the road and the road leading up to it is super bumpy with tons of potholes so if you’re not careful you can really mess up your tires—not sure why they can’t fix this. The hotel itself is small but looks peaceful all by itself—even with all the empty land around, its seems like hotels in this area are just overall, small. Also, they advertise that they have a “spa” but in reality it’s just a sauna—I asked for a massage and they said there was no masseuse that week onsite.

However, the room was uncomfortably warm, and the duvet was excessively thick, making it difficult to sleep comfortably. Adjusting the temperature didn’t seem to help much. Despite this, the hotel’s sleek design, quiet ambiance, and convenient location make it a good choice for travelers looking to explore Iceland’s stunning landscapes.

So grateful for the “wake up call” service when the Northern Lights were present as this was a bucket list experience for me. Excellent area to stay for exploring the waterfalls, exploring Vik and going on a glacier excursion. I highly recommend and thank you to Umi for a dreamy stay!
- Sheeni (4/5): - Quite a disappointing experience given the stellar reviews. We were very excited to visit. When we got there, we were given a twin bed room (vs double) without asking which really ruined the experience for us on the first night. While they fixed this quickly day 2, the biggest disappointment was that we signed up for a wake up call to see the northern lights and they didn’t knock on our door. We travelled thousands of kms to come see it and while they appeared that night (as confirmed by the reception) they missed knocking on our door. If they didn’t offer that service we would have been alert on our own but we depended on the hotel and was disappointed by the service.

The bar is a vibe and the restaurant had some of the best food we’ve had on our trip. The location and surroundings of the property make you feel like you are the luckiest person in Iceland.
