In Cabin 12, there were upgrades/maintenance of the main cabin space and furnishings, but the bathroom was very, very run down. The fireplace is cute and I wish we had spare time to enjoy it, but the entire cabin smelled very strongly of wood-fire smoke.

- ericrbarron (8/5): Great last minute adventure - We were lucky enough to grab the last available room at Big Sur Lodge during an impromptu stop, and it turned out to be a great experience. Samuel at the front desk was especially friendly and accommodating, setting the tone right away. The lodge has a fantastic ambiance, with a cozy lobby fireplace that really captures the classic Big Sur vibe. Our room, with two queen beds, was exactly what you’d expect from a lodge-style cabin—modest, clean, and well maintained. There were a few minor drawbacks: the screen was missing on the sliding glass door, so we had to keep it closed to avoid bugs, the beds were a bit firm for our taste, and the toilet was slow to refill. None of these were major issues, though. During our stay, there was a power outage, but the staff handled it well by providing a flashlight and lantern, which honestly made the experience feel a bit more adventurous and memorable. Breakfast at the restaurant was really solid, and the espresso bar lattes were a 5 out of 5. Every staff member we interacted with was professional and kind. Our kids especially loved the penny press machine in the lobby. With great hiking nearby and an overall welcoming atmosphere, we would definitely stay here again.

- izcla (10/5): Right in the forest - Family Trip- 1 day at Big Sur for our road trip to SF. There mini cabins/rooms. All rooms are close to each other so you can hear everything. The walls are paper thin and it was noisy but at the same time it was a quick stop and if you’re in park you want to get up early and explore. The rooms are well equipped. We really like the fire place, it gave it a coast feel.

We stayed in a pet-friendly cabin and it was exactly the condition I would expect from a state park cabin. If you are looking for a hotel experience, I’d look elsewhere. This was great for our family of 4. Loved the location and accessibility to the park trails and activities. The restaurant/cafe was excellent. It was not clear that the pool would be inaccessible so that was disappointing. Would love for there to be more area/activities for kids to play and fire pits around the cabins.

- 959davidd959 (6/5): You pay for the location. Standard cabins are average at best. - This is my fourth visit to Big Sur. We stayed one night at Big Sur Lodge and one night camping. My last visit involved two nights camping and one night at Ragged Point Inn. Overall I prefer camping to hotels, but a hot shower and quiet room is greatly appreciated. It is not fair to compare Big Sur accommodations with city hotels. Amenities are limited here. Enjoy the lodge for what it is… a place to rest in a unique location. This is not a luxury resort experience. Visit a city hotel for that.

However, upon my arrival late in the afternoon, I was given just 2 queens, no fireplace. I was too tired from our journey to complain that evening. But the next morning, I came by the checkin desk to ask about the mistake. At first I was told, I didn't book a fireplace, even though I had my confirmation that proved I did. After a few minutes, the clerk confirmed I did book a fireplace. However, there were none available, so the manager moved us to a different room without bothering to notify us. I asked to speak to her, but she wasn't in. I asked to have her call me but she never did. This is not great customer service. Again, enjoyed our stay, but wasn't pleased with the way this was handled.

- sskinnerphotos (2/5): Lower your expectations if you are booking a stay here, and don't book cabin 12 - We booked three nights because of the location (which is great) and the charming park atmosphere, but stayed only one after encountering cabin #12. What a disgusting mess! The attached photos back up what I'm saying. It's like the lodge quit trying to keep up their cabins 20 years ago. The cabin smelled so smokey, I was wondering if maybe the flu wasn't working when the fireplace was last used. The bathroom is no place you want to be without shoes. Doesn't look clean at all, and there is visible mold around the shower, and the toilet seat is literally coming apart. It was a terrible experience. Upon check out after our only night there, we told them about the issues we had with our stay and asked if all their cabins were in similar condition. They told us some had been updated, but many are like cabin 12. Regardless, we won't be back. Love Big Sur, but not this lodge.

- Amy (8/5): - Unfortunately, it was raining pretty much our entire stay. But we loved the Lodge and enjoyed being in Big Sur after having the Highway closed for 3 years. We live in San Luis Obispo, so headed to Big Sur to enjoy the opening. The Lodge is perfect and we would stay there again if the time is right. Of course, I'm sure it will be difficult to get a reservation soon as the weather improves, and more people want to travel the Highway now open to Big Sur! Rain, but he Lodge was great!

Great location w/ multiple hiking trails within walking distance. While there was a lot to like about the Lodge, the smell of wood smoke permeated throughout the room. Our room had a working fireplace so that was to be expected to some degree but it was pretty strong. The bathroom could use a refresh.

We were able to check in at 3pm. Normal check in is 4pm. Staff was friendly enough, but not overly friendly. We had a king bed with a deck and we loved it. Weather was perfect and we were able to sit on the deck and enjoy the evening. We would love to come back and stay longer.

Cabin was set back from the highway so very quiet and amazing sleep. Had a nice sitting area so you could relax in the evening. Loved the tall ceilings too. Rooms were basic, had what you needed. Starting to look a bit tired and could use a little paint and some repairs to freshen up. Overall would come again.

- Gordon (8/5): Surrounded by redwoods - Big rooms,quiet location in the woods. Great trails to hike right from our room. Good coffee shop at the lodge. Friendly staff. Older cabins,but well maintained. Sketchy internet. Had to go to a lodge area for internet access.
- Lora (9/5): Had an amazing stay and loved being able to walk out of our room and start hiking beautiful trails. - The property was in an amazing location and the room was so spacious and comfortable The smell of smoke in the room was overwhelming.
- poonamt660 (4/5): An unsatisfactory stay (see review details) - The Check-in staff person ( a male) read through all the instructions very swiftly and impersonally. On Check-out, the same staff member presented the checkout key bucket without a Thank you or any appreciation. Overall, a poor and robotic experience at the Reception Desk. The room while being a Deluxe King Room, was poorly furnished. It lacked any sense of warmth. The closet was missing the door. It looked unattractive. An unattractive and Work-in-Progress feel, which added to the lack of warmth in the room's ambience. The coffee station didn't have napkins nor stirs for the coffee/tea. Overall an unwelcoming stay at the Lodge.

- Irma (10/5): Will be back! - I like the feel of being a campground without having to camp! The cabin was large and comfortable.The staff was helpful for what sightseeing we should do, very happy with our stay there. Of course I'll say not having a TV in the room was different for me but I grew to get accustomed to it and realize that it was a good breakaway from my everyday routine.

- jazmineev17 (10/5): Beautiful Big Sur! - Big Sur Lodge was great! The staff at the front desk were very helpful and informative. The rooms were the coziest, with a great skylight that allowed us to see the stars at night. We chose the room without the fireplace because I don't like the smell of smoke, so I was worried it would smell smoky, but it did not. We loved our patio, which we enjoyed in the mornings for our morning coffee. If I ever come back, I am definitely staying here again!

- kim (10/5): Great little getaway. - I left my jacket with a key fob and expensive sun glasses in the room after we checked out. We got them back a couple days later from housekeeping. Very honest, hard-working staff, clean room. It was nice and quiet. Enjoyed our stay immensely. We ate at the lodge for breakfast. Good hiking right outside the door. Went drove down to Pffifer beach. They need better bath mats with drainage holes so you don’t slip in the bathtub. The one they currently use ,covers the drainage hole and the water starts to pool.
- L8973DIerind (10/5): Great getaway - Great, convenient location for our weekend getaway. We had a 1-bedroom suite with 2 queen beds, private balcony, wood burning fireplace. They left a Scrabble game for us which we used. there is little wifi, no TV. Wifi is available at the lodge. They gave us 2 bundles of firewood and we brought some extra with us, so we had plenty. More is available for purchase at the lodge. Cozy, quiet and reasonably priced. It was Jan/Feb, so maybe off-season rates. They even gave us a $10 gift certificate to use at the gift shop. No complaints, we had a wonderful time and the weather was amazing.

- JackinSF (10/5): Winter 1 night, Summer 2 or 3 nights to enjoy the coast and redwoods. - We took a trip from northern California to visit Monterey and whale watching. The Big Sur Lodge was an excellent place to stay. The room was clean with a fireplace and plenty of room. While the pool was closed for the winter, it looked inviting as well as the option to walk the trails of Pfeiffer State Park. The reservation and checkin process was efficient and the front desk staff were welcoming.
- 598genep (6/5): Rooms are a tad tired - We reserved a room with a fireplace but could not stay in there due to the heavy smell of smoke. The staff was able to put us up in a room with a gas fireplace that also had a kitchen. Overall it was satisfactory but you can tell there’s not money used for updating the facility.

- Andrew (7/5): Nice countryside stop off on highway 1. - Great location, comfortable room. Good heater. Clean, well presented and helpful friendly staff. A great walk to a stunning valley view to the ocean and also some falls. Nothing too taxing but a pleasant way to spend an hour or two. It’s, a camping lodge facility so expect a cabin in the woods and you won’t be disappointed. It’s a little tired. Breakfast wasn’t great, the smashed avocado was basically a low grade guacamole spread on some toast.
