Guest Reviews
- Paolo (10/5): A great experience in Hakuba! Thanks for the excellent time spent there - Fantastic room and excellent breakfast
- Ognian (10/5): -
- Robert (9/5): We loved our stay for the comfort, convenience to shops and close proximity to ski fields. - Breakfast was very good without being extravagent - we had everything we wanted and in very pleasant surrounds. All staff were friendly and helpful. The balcony was excellent for post skiing discussions and drinks. Rooms were comfortable. Can't say there was anything we disliked or could have been improved upon.
- Gary (8/5): -
- Michelle (9/5): Great time would recommend - Nice breakfast good staff Bathrooms tired
- Selia (10/5): Great location beautiful country feel and large rooms. We really enjoyed our stay! - The location was perfect for ski in and ski out
- Suzanne (7/5): -
- Tatsuya (10/5): Great location for Hakuba skiing - Location, Traditional interior, German restaurant Narrow bathroom, weak wifi
- Wesley (6/5): If some focus and attention was applied to guest services this hotel would live up to its 3 star rating it advertises. - Location was good. The rooms were comfortable and clean. The service was disappointing. The staff were not interested in helping guests and providing minimal guest service assistance. Many seemed lacking in knowledge of the area and simple queries were unable to be answered. Breakfast was basic and often cold. Staff stood around chatting rather than offering to help make coffees and teas.

- Ayrin (8/5): staff was friendly and helpful, would stay again - Breakfast was a little cold, but quality was great. could use come more variety was there for 5 days. breakfast was the same. the trash in the balcony should have been cleared
- Bruce (8/5): Wonderful - Lovely staff who always help
Great location as it’s quiet & private
Away from the crowds Breakfast is ok but not fantastic
- Mary (10/5): Great location, great restaurant and staff - The location!! Ski in ski out. Also the staff in the Marillen are fantastic! So friendly and welcoming. We were very appreciative of their enthusiasm and hospitality. The bathroom in the bedroom is small
- Vladimir (10/5): - Amazing place that has exceeded my expectations. Perfect location just at the bottom of a slope. Nice design, you feel as if you were in a chalet in the Alps. Friendly staff and a good restaurant. There is also a lively apre-ski bar just in front of the hotel, seems like belongs to the same group. I would definitely love to return here :)
- Steven (9/5): Fantastic - Ski straight down to the lift. Breakfast was great. No Onsen
- Annalisa (8/5): -
- Albert (7/5): -
- Adrian (3/5): Great location but don’t expect too much from the hotel. - Great location, ski in - ski out. Balcony overlooking a slope. Close to ski lift. Pick up drop of shuttle. Staff were nice. Food wasn’t bad. Nice and warm inside. Drying room for ski gear but located down stairs. Outside bar at the end of the day was good, lots of young people, live music and a DJ. Just didn’t feel welcome, restaurant patrons have priority over hotel guests. I was on the 3rd floor, stairs only, no assistance from staff to help with large suitcases. Family of 4 and booked two rooms about 11 months ago. Rooms on seperate floors, could not put us on the same floor close to each other. Water pressure in shower a complete disaster. Small bathroom overall. Could only get into restaurant if it had been booked well in advance (very popular spot). No bar for a quiet drink at the end of the day if it was busy. Seasonal staff, they were very nice but lacked basic knowledge of the mountain. No fridge or microwave. Kettle with tea only. Hot breakfast is not sitting in a Bain Marie so not hot. Scrambled eggs only, they do not do fried or poached on request. No sitting room other than the restaurant which is closed outside of operating hours.
- PHILIPPE (7/5): - Personnel aimable et efficace. Très bon emplacement. Hotel d'un autre âge. Cabine en kit comme salle de bains. Lumière blafarde insuffisante et odeur de cuisine dans la chambre. Bruits divers, ventilation...
Prix exorbitant.
- Craig (10/5): My family really enjoyed staying at the Marillen and intend to return. It was an extremely convenient location for skiin - Outstanding location, excellent staff (extremely helpful) and delicious food at the restaurant. Nothing.
- Rod (8/5): - Location to lifts and town Small bathroom
- Jason (9/5): Fantastic stay. Will definitely come back - Amazing location - ski in/ski out. Right by Hakuba Apres Bar (which was amazing). Great staff and great food Toilet in room was tiny
- Yun (9/5): -
- Geoffrey (9/5): -
- Leah (10/5): Magical stay right on the slopes - The breakfast buffet was superb. The staff were excellent and the room was huge by Japanese standards.
- Martin (8/5): -
- Vartika (9/5): Overall recommended hotel in Hakuba - The staff is friendly and location is excellent close to Happo One Gondola and various restaurants and bars. The same breakfast every days gets boring. Even the fruits don't change!
The bathrooms are tiny.
The shuttle service is a bit erratic amd needs prior booking.
- Chantelle (7/5): - The location was brilliant, right on a slope with the Apres bar out the front. There was live music every afternoon. The staff were super friendly and helpful whoever they were all very young and lacked direction.
Our bed was never made or the sheets changed, bin wasn't emptied. Breakfast was always running late, coffee machine milk broken and the Marillen looking a little tired and run down. I think they need a good manager in to lead the team.
This isnt a complaint about the staff, like I said they were all super polite however they need someone with experience to lead them.
- Dwi (10/5): - The staff are so kind and helpful There is no microwave in the hotel
- Louise (9/5): Very comfortable. Staff were so exceptional, nothing was too much to ask, absolutely made our stay! - Staff were exceptional! And location would have been exceptional also when the lower runs opened. Would have loved a spa, otherwise thought the amenities and vibe was perfect.
- Moira (10/5): -
- ARISARA (7/5): -
- Katherine (8/5): Great location - Location: right next to chair lift, kids snow school and play area. Short walk to town restaurants and rentals. No elevators. Staff service was just bare minimum.
- Julie (9/5): Superb -
- Mattia (8/5): Great spot for ski in ski out in Hakuba - Great ski in ski out hotel in Hakuba. The staff are really nice, with breakfast provided daily. The hotel rooms themselves are a little dated/ older bathroom but still comfortable. Great location
- Cvetomir (10/5): Exceptional -
- Peter (9/5): Great on-piste location, generous and friendly staff welcome - Ski in, ski out, comfortable room, access to onsen. Good breakfast and authentic Austrian menu. The 4 flights of stairs up to our room. The bathroom was awful, Beatles music every morning, it's simply too much!
- Dominic (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gareth (9/5): Superb -
- Michael (10/5): Perfect hotel for our ski weekend - Great staff, location, transportation
- Alison (10/5): Fabulous ski holiday - Ski in ski out fabulous position on the slopes of Happo Hakuba. Staff were very helpful and offered assistance and recommendations to restaurants Ni
- Anne (9/5): Superb -
- Melanie (10/5): Great comfortable rooms but bathrooms need to be updated. - Literally on the ski resort, ski in & out very convenient. Our room was huge & comfortable beds comparable to other hotels we’ve stayed at in Japan. There was lots of things happening downstairs like a band and karaoke but we did not hear any of that noise which was great. The bathroom was tiny, had a smell, the bidet didn’t work, no cover for the toilet, & our curtain had mold on it. No elevators & we had lots of luggage’s which was a pain to bring up to the top of our room.
- John (10/5): Beat location in Hakuba and brilliant service. - Brilliant location and excellent staff Small bathrooms
- Steven (10/5): Exceptional - Everything. Nothing
- Anton (10/5): Best location in Happo-one and excellent service - Great location, you’re one minute walk to the chairlift and many bars and restaurants
- Graham (8/5): Very good - Great managers, fantastic location.
- Simon (10/5): A magical week at Happo One - The location was epic. The rooms and facilities were comfortable and the staff were friendly and helpful (thanks Siena and Valentine). HHG shuttles made getting around the village a breeze. Thanks Bernd and the team at Marillen.
- Dietmar (6/5): Pleasant - Room was nice and comfortable Room charge was 418 per night; for that price I would expect an adequate breakfast!
Bathroom is tiny
- Justin (10/5): Excellent location and very firendly/helpful owners. - The Breakfast was great thank you. The toasters were a little slow during the busoer times but not a big deal
- Nicholas (8/5): Very comfortable and convienent location with onsite parking, good staff and resturant facilities. - Breakfast was good selection of options and nice view over the slopes. Nice quiet rooms, although ceiling lighting could have been brigher. Room could have more USB charing pports, especially near some of the beds in our room which had none. Comfortable beds, the bed converings were a little too hot to have on us at night, which disturbed our sleep. The option of a blanket might be useful. Liked the evening entertainment in the dining room, however, it was too loud to talk normally to others a table. Prices were higher than expected for dinner meals. Staff could have been more proactive in recognising a customers needs when order food and drinks, we had to wait at the counters and had to call to a staff member to obtain service occasionally. It would be nice if there was a lounge area near the fire for pre- or after dinner socialising.
- Jane (9/5): Superb - The staff were so accommodating and friendly. The shuttle bus was a great boon.
- Cecilia (10/5): Magical, what a location! Our hosts made us feel us so welcome, like a home away from home - Our Hosts Naoko and Bernd were so warm, welcoming and made our stay magical
- Claire (8/5): A wonderful week at picturesque location. Great staff. Ski in. - The room was spacious and light, a had a lovely feel. The balcony had a lovely view. The bar was great, breakfast was good and the staff were excellent. Ability to ski in / out. Right next to apres ski. The bathroom was tiny and felt like a caravan.
- Glen (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was fantastic. Stayed at a few places in Hakuba. This, by far, is the best. Great location. Great facilities. And the owners are the best. Having to leave and go home......
- Gamlin (10/5): Amazing place, friendly and I would definitely recommend - Really nice hotel, perfect for what we needed Nothing
- Fiona (10/5): Loved it. Would highly recommend. - Location was stellar. Breakfast was great and beds were very comfortable. Communication before our stay was excellent.
- Ian (8/5): An enjoyable stay in an old style Chalet with lots of character. - A great ski in/out location at the bottom of the Nakiyama Run with a short walk into town.
Very friendly and helpful hosts/staff.
Restaurant has good food & snacks with a vibrant atmosphere in the evenings. Rooms are small but adequate with compact Japanese style bathrooms, making it a challenge for taller guests.
There are no lifts so be prepared for flights of stairs, including down to the ski storage/ drying room area.
- Mary (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jacob (9/5): Couldn't have asked for a better place to stay - The buffet breakfast that came with the hotel was excellent. The location was excellent and we were able to freely move and do things thanks to the hotel. Maybe a more modern bathroom would have been good, but the facilities in the bathroom were very clean and worked well.
- Qiang (10/5): The most enjoyable ski trip in Japan! - The location, the hostess, staff, food, I like everything there. nothing
- Falko (8/5): Great authentic German experience directly at the ski pist - Amazing location directly at the bottom of Happo One slopes. Cozy rooms and great traditional and authentic German atmosphere: the Schnitzel was almost like in Vienna. Most importantly: Naoko and Bernd are great hosts who care about your experience. A table and two chairs in the room would have been nice. The breakfast was tasty but we were missing some more healthy options a bit.
- Tay (7/5): Good -
- Jeff (8/5): Very good -
- Sam (9/5): Superb -
- Jane (10/5): Exceptional -
- Brendan (10/5): Amazing stay with the most wonderful hosts! - Service, views, food, people Nothing
- Harry (9/5): Was a great hotel for the purpose of snowboarding at Hakuba. Would stay here again. - Service was great, easy to communicate with staff, food was delicious for breakfast and dinners. Room was a good size for 2 people.
- Katherine (10/5): Exceptional - Fantastic location at the base of Happo One Ski field. Cosy, friendly, Austrian-style hotel with lovely staff who make you feel very at home. Owners Naoko and Bernd are so welcoming. Highly recommend.
- Roger (10/5): Brilliant Hotel - Bernd and Naoko who own the hotel are the most welcoming of hosts. The Hotelis brilliantly located on the edge of the snowfield so truly ski in ski out. Accomodation is very good with a very good breakfast and the restaurant serves “Austrian” dishes in the evening (which are also very good). Close to a number of restaurants and a short walk to two major ski hire companies (which will deliver you skis to the hotel). There is an onsen at the Happo Hotel that residents have free access to. This is the place to stay in Hakuba. Nothing
- Chris (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anthony (9/5): We will come back 👍 - Staff, location and position. More power outlets and milk would have been good. En suite is basic and small.
- Ml_go (7/5): 2024 March - My Stay at Marillen Hotel - Marillen Hotel is truly ski-in ski-out on an intermediate slope, very near to Nakiyama 2 & 3 Ski Lifts. They serve delicious breakfast. The hotel has no elevator. Dry room to store skis and boots is at the basement level and the guest rooms are on level 2 or 3. Therefore, there are many stairs to climb. Carrying heavy luggage or skis to climb stairs is not fun. The bathroom and its door are smaller than expected.
- Abbey (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bruce (8/5): Friendly family hotel with a cosy guesthouse feel, nice restaurant in house, friendly staff always happy to help. Beauti - beautiful location near ski slopes, comfortable room zero
- Anthony (10/5): Great location and staff *********** - Location and staff Nothing
- Deborah (9/5): Great place to stay right on the snow - Lovely chalet right in the ski slopes. Great location. Amazing staff, most helpful and accomodating. Great room, loved the balcony too. Good drying room and delicious breakfasts No complaints at all
- Mark (8/5): We lucked out with the snow and the warm “hospiz”-style hospitality. Will surely return, despite the dated mountain infr - Convenience to slopes.
Comfortable, homely, welcoming. Unpretentious
A touch of Bavarian hospitality in Japan.
Brilliant owner couple Bernd and Naoko go out of their way! The management company (Hakuba Hotel Group) were unethical in failing to notify us that our longstanding reservation would conflict with the alcohol fuelled Snow Machine festival - an event bringing a few thousand vomit spewing, foul mouthed, music thumping louts into town, doing nothing to enhance Australians’ reputation nor showing any respect for Japanese politeness. Should have come with a “Beware of the Bogans” warning🥲
- Jodi-lyn (9/5): Superb - Breakfast was great. Excellent location- walking distance to multiple bus stations, places to eat and ski in- ski out. Hotel provides free shuttle service to and from a few locations. Access to the Onsen at their sister hotel- The Happo. Friendly and helpful staff. The bathroom is a little tight, if you're over 6 foot tall.
- Danxiang (10/5): Exceptional -
- Forterre (8/5): Very good -
- Adrian (8/5): awesome trip - fantastic location great staff breakfast finished at 9 am
- Ye (10/5): Exceptional - Location is superb, a ski in /out hut. Beautiful dining room with great breakfast. Room is super comfortable and cozy. Looking at the slope directly. Free shuttle service can be reserved.
- Marcia (9/5): Very comfortable place with very welcoming staff and an excellent restaurant . E - Near eateries, shuttle bus stops and the advanced ski slopes. Delicious breakfast is included. The bathroom was a little cramped.
- Rachel (10/5): Exceptional - Great location! Ski in and ski out, plus super close to restaurants and main areas of town. The staff is incredible and super helpful with organizing transportation and any reservations needed.
- Hollie (10/5): The staff and owners were very friendly - The hotel is really nice. I love the view of the mountains and the fireworks every Saturday in winter. I think it is a wonderful that the hotel provides toboggans for kids that stay at the hotel. Nearly all staff go out of their way to assist wherever possible with information, transfers or ordering taxis. There wasn’t really a bit that I didn’t like about the hotel. Perhaps the restaurant staff could advise last ordered when the kitchen is closing so that desserts can be ordered. We missed trying the chocolate fondue & creme brulee cheesecake.
- Katherine (9/5): Great location, staff and facilities, was the perfect place to stay for our first time in Hakuba - The location is perfect, facilities are great, staff very helpful and great restaurant. Everything in Hakuba village is close and 2 chair lifts right out the front door. The owners are very hands on and helpful. Nothing, all great!
- Norman (10/5): Great location, great staff and management - Everything was great and staff was excellent Not applicable
- Li (9/5): Superb -
- Mark (10/5): Fantastic warm hospitality from the owners - It’s very well located and within easy walking to restaurants and cafes as well as the physio plus the fact there is a laundry facility foc in the hotel which is a real blessing. The cheese fondue was exquisite we had to have two helpings We liked it all
- Mark (10/5): Our hosts were at the hotel daily and together with their staff made our stay very enjoyable - Hotel was nicely located and not too far from the gondola and walking distance to the chair lifts which eventually opened
- Jackie (10/5): Glad we stay there. Rooms and properties just like pictures - Location, the staff, the bed, cleanliness, the dry room. The bed is extremely comfortable . Within walking distant to Happo bus terminal ; can hop in shuttle to the ski slopes . We are too early for the ski season, the slope just next to hotel wasn’t opened yet , but have own transfer to other resort. Front desk extremely helpful to book dinner reservation and booked taxi during our stay there. 1.The bathroom. Maybe the smallest bathroom that we have ever stayed in.
2. No elevator . Luckily we have a few young men, Remy and Joey at front desk to help us with all our luggages to third level.
Not deal breaker .
- Jennifer (10/5): Exceptional - Breakfast was amazing, dinner was amazing, the staff and owners made you feel so welcome! It was the best ski trip/family vacation we've ever had! Nothing.
- Anonymous (9/5): Lovely property run by welcoming staff! - Lovely property run by welcoming staff!
- John (8/5): Very good -
- Ivan (8/5): Very good -
