Guest Reviews
- LIN (7/5): -
- Angela (10/5): Lovely historical plantation style hotel, tastefully furnished and well appointed. - Beautiful traditional style hotel, with well appointed, spacious rooms. Immaculately clean. Right in the centre of town. Nothing.
- Audrey (10/5): -
- Mayumi (7/5): -
- MOHAMMED (9/5): Short but memorable stay - Unique architecture of the building. It was very open but we still felt safe. Not many beaches around but we did see whales from the close by lighthouse. Proactive staff made sure I had the room number and code in case we were late checking in. Far from the big cities - Kona and Hilo. Town pretty much closes after sunset.
- Nicole (9/5): Really nice, a bit of a drive to get there. - Beautiful little motel. Only stayed one night as it is in the northernmost part of the island and a windy road to get there and back to the rest of the island. Rooms were comfy, clean and very nice. Lots of room. Played games in the foyer of the hotel. There was a farmer's market right outside the morning we left. Nice bakery and places to eat within a few minutes walk. Beautiful drive to get there. Slightly pricey for the location. Other places on the island were less. A bit out of the way unless you really want to be up in that area of the island.
- Dean (8/5): Ideal location for seeingbthe north big island . - Quaint Need a place in bathroom to put toiletries
- Lucinda (10/5): Peaceful stay - Quiet hotel
Wonderful front desk service and a wealth of knowledge
Soft blankets and towels were great
- Simone (7/5): - buon bagno e letto comodo Abbiamo dovuto farci cambiare stanza, quella che ci era stata assegnata era in condizioni pietose.
sebbene molto fuori orario è arrivata la proprietaria che ha risolto la situazione tempestivamente
- Alberto (4/5): - Ratones y cucarachas
- Janice (7/5): Homey - Clean, local Pets not allowed
- Rachel (10/5): - Very clean, quiet, and so cute! If you’re looking for a nice place to stay in northern Hawaii I would definitely recommend this hotel. My 18 year old son really liked the beds!
- Seldon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rebecca (10/5): - There was no coffee available. The lobby wasn't going to open until 10:00 a.m., and though it looked like they would have coffee there, none was available, nor was it the afternoon/evening before. Very disappointed about that. Otherwise the place was lovely.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Wonderful Experience - After doing a long trip around the Big Island, I can say that this was our favorite stay. It is a lovely hotel. Check in was very easy, rooms were clean and stay was very quiet.
- Loren (9/5): Superb -
- Brittney (8/5): - We enjoyed the aesthetic of the place and the location. Very quiet and clean. Very few amenities so good for only a one night stay.
- Rituparna (10/5): One night stay in Hawi - We stayed in Hawi for 1 night, The property is well maintained and clean. They have a self check in and out process which is convenient. Also the main door entry to the hotel are number locked so it is very secure. There is a common room with microwave, water dispenser and dining facility. The room had comfortable beds and bathroom was spacious and clean. There is lobby space in front of the rooms with chairs wherein you can relax. There are coffee shops and restaurants within walking distance. On Saturday they had a Farmer's Market right at the Hotel doorstep which was a nice addition. I would recommend this place to stay and will book again.
- Cynthia (8/5): Very good - Very comfortable bed and super comfortable sheets. No coffee. No ice.
- Karen Odette De la (10/5): - Amazing stay !! Old plantation vibes and relaxing!!!
- Mariette (10/5): Exceptional -
- Charlotte (10/5): - I liked that no key or key card needed, just code for keypad that was sent via email. No need to check in at a desk. Very convenient as we got in late and the front desk may have already been closed by then.
- William (10/5): - Exceptional property for viewing the volcano
- Melissa (9/5): Superb - I enjoy staying in places that are a bit different and have some historic character (I don't like big brand hotels or resorts), and Kohala Village Inn does that for me. A plantation style inn from the 1950s, rooms wrapped around an enclosed courtyard, and I liked that is was off the road, a bit hidden. Room comfortable and clean. Easy check-in process.
- Karen A (10/5): Enjoyed Kohala Village Inn - Location was close to little downtown, coffee shop and restaurants. Self Check in process was simple. Nicely decorated. Very clean. There is a community microwave and water dispenser but no coffee maker. Fridge in the room. We were very happy with this hotel.
- Kelly (10/5): No frills. Big Island vibe. Perfect. - Easy check-in. Just the basics, bedroom and bathroom. Linens were clean and fresh. Open air rooms. Affordable. Shared microwave in the common room so we could heat our breakfast. Staff were very friendly and recommended local shopping and coffee options all in walking distance. This is a no frills property. If you want to slow down and relax, this is the place with an authentic Big Island vibe.
- DANIEL (4/5): - The property itself was fine. The room was clean and bed comfy. However, the fire alarm repeatedly went off throughout the night with no apparent cause. Requesting a refund. Got little sleep there.
- Ethan (8/5): - Good stay. Secluded area
- Steven (10/5): Cute little hotel - I don’t normally take the time to review a hotel but this place is a diamond in the ruff.
I stayed in 12a&b and it was spacious and great for my family of 4 but could have easily accommodated few more kiddos.
The hotel is older but very cute and fits with the old town vibe. If you are staying in the area this should be high on your list
- Murali (6/5): Our stay in Kohala Village Inn in Hawi - Not so good. It could be made more pleasant by providing some coffee/tea. Not having a 24/7 front desk support is something we felt like concerned if something happens to the occupant.
- george (10/5): - I liked being greeted by the hotel staff. I enjoyed being shown to the room by staff. I appreciated the kindness show by the front desk
- Monica (9/5): Superb -
- Marilynn (8/5): - Funky quaint. Loved architecture courtyard. Closeness to shops
- Pamela (8/5): - I loved this place. Cute. Clean. Farmers market outside in the morning. Everyone was friendly and things were in walking distance. The only thing I would change is the beds. Not comfortable at all.
- Yumiko (10/5): - We loved brand new room and silky bed comfort
- Nan (10/5): - Patience was the greatest front desk clerk anyone could ever ask for. Kind, caring and made sure everything was in order. Thank you Patience!!
- Becky (10/5): Exceptional -
- Donna (10/5): - Staff were pleasant and helpful. Room air conditioning was great. Instructions for security locks could be better. Great location and option for our short stay in Hawi.
- Albert (10/5): - We stayed there a couple of times before. It is always clean and comfy.
We have family ( the Vinta family) living in Hawi, we were there for a family gathering.
Thank you for being there for us.

- Marcia (10/5): - This is a quiet and beautiful neighborhood. Love our stay over a weekend
- Vernon (10/5): ATV - Awesome convince close to family members and walking distance to stores and places to eat
- John (9/5): Wonderful stay in remote Hawi - Beautiful historic place, wonderful central veranda and gardens. The double queen rooms are very tight. I think the single kings should be fine.
- CLEMENT (8/5): - It reminds me of a ranch house that families gather and enjoy each others company. Very quaint, clean, and homely.
- Diane (10/5): - This property has a lot of charm and is well maintained. All of my interactions with them have been pleasant and extremely helpful. This is a top choice for a place to stay on the north coast of the island.
- Keith (7/5): Good location. - Right in heart of Hawi and close to everything. Limited desk clerk hours and information.
- george (10/5): - I like the location for the things I like to do. The climate is wonderful. Its quiet and clean, the lack of standard services offered by similar establishments is offset by the availability
of services such as resturants, shops, groceries, gas stations, etc, all within walking distance.
I also like the plantation motif.
Great place-
- Morales (10/5): Exceptional - Very clean and peaceful Everything was great
- Susan (10/5): Cute place - Fun stop on our bike tour. Had everything we needed. Clean quiet place.
- Glenn (4/5): - Other than the lack of coffee, and ice on the property, the limited staff availability (non existent for 21 hours of the day) and the cockroach visitor in our bathroom, the room was satisfactory and our stay okay.
- Sara (10/5): Hawi Gem - Such a gem! We really enjoyed our night.
- Christopher (10/5): Clean and quiet - Check in and out was easy. Room was clean and quiet. Enjoyed our stay as a sleeping spot for our time on the north end of the island.
- michael (6/5): - Insufficient staff hours, no ice, left message the day before and received no reply, insufficient horizontal surfaces for storing travel items
- Mai (9/5): In the heart of Hawi - We had a lovely, comfortable room in a great location. The main shopping area of the bohemian town of Hawi is only a block away, but the inn is very quiet and private.
- Kevin (9/5): Superb -
- Michael (10/5): - The host is great, very kind and helpful. Lovely property, would stay again!
- Jiawen (10/5): - Nice place at a reasonable price, close to a cafe with really good breakfast and lunch options
- Laura (8/5): - The property itself is well maintained and very clean. It is an older hotel which is charming. It is not at all soundproof. This would be okay, but we stayed on a Saturday night when the same property hosted a live music event. It shut down at 10pm, but we had no idea when we reserved that this event would be on. As most area restaurants close early (7pm), it meant we were in our room by 7pm and listening to the distorted noise of amplified music at a distance for three hours. Had we known about this, we would not have reserved. I appreciate that this area is suffering economically and that all businesses need to be creative in finding ways to make money. Still, this combination (evening music events plus historic hotel with no soundproofing) is probably not going to work unless they only have hotel guests who know about the event when booking and attend it themselves.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Quaint, comfortable hotel worth a visit - Very quaint and cute hotel that is comfortable. Room was clean, had air conditioning, and nice old fashioned decor. They also offered some activities as this is built next to a community center of sorts, so they have hula classes or others available.
- Andrew (5/5): Passable -
- Onur (10/5): - Great place
- JOY (10/5): - There was nothing we did not like about this property. I grew up in Kohala & have stayed at this place several times through out the years when I visit home & I am always well pleased with everything.
- Lucia Rose (8/5): - Our bed was a little uncomfortable, but otherwise we enjoyed our stay. We were able to be well rested for our sons football games.
- Bruce (8/5): - The property was decent and quiet.
- mark (10/5): - Staff extraordinarily helpful
- Jeremiah (10/5): Great vibe - What a cool place to stay! Our family of 4 stayed in 2 rooms with an adjoining bathroom. There wasn’t anyone at the desk or anywhere else but they helpfully left instructions for us to enter on our own. The beds could have been more comfortable, and we felt a bit exposed to the parking lot, but the rooms were tidy and cute. This property is part of a cooperatively-owned community/farm/classroom/event space, which is so cool. We regret that we missed the Night Market on the first Wednesday of the month.
- Bonnie (8/5): - Very helpful and nice staff
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Noisy
- Albert (10/5): - We always enjoyed our stay. thanks for being there.
- Theodore (10/5): - Really neat little motel. Their check in/out system was super convenient. The rooms are a little smaller than what some may be used to but if you’re spending your Hawaii vacation in your hotel room you’re doing it wrong. Would definitely stay here again.
- Tara (2/5): - We had to cancel last minute due to medical situation and the hotel was completely unaccommodating. We are not the type to cancel last minute. But..... to not make an exception.... I urge others to book at a more compassionate establishment. Expedia was totally willing to issue a refund because we couldn't travel due to circumstances. The hotel refused. Bad business....
- Sarah (8/5): Old world charm, remote. - The room was delightful. Clean and updated. Nicely furnished. Great linens. Comfy bed. The whole arrangement of the building is old style plantation with that old charm. Light and airy, Old double hung windows rattled with the wind. Some nice outdoor features in the courtyard with picnic tables and Plumeria Tree. Nice, inviting sitting areas in lobby and hallway. Lobby always open, with dining table, microwave, some teas and water dispenser. The surrounding of the building was a bit forlorn. Hard to find the registration entrance. Outbuildings very dates. Know that the little Hawi Town has only a few good eating options. This is a remote place.
- Albert (10/5): - convenient and close to everything.
- Isabelle (8/5): VERY NOISY - The building is a one story old plantation home arranged around a central courtyard with a covered breezeway. With original wood floors, windows and hardware, it displays quite a bit of charm. The large windows on both sides of the room allow for max ventilation and we did not need AC. HOWEVER.... the quaintness has its pitfalls and all the above features make for a VERY NOISY PLACE. We had a lovely first evening when the hotel was empty but for one other room; then all hell broke loose the next evening, when the hotel filled up with guests partying and chatting in the courtyard and in the breezeway until the wee hour, other guests leaving noisily at the crack of dawn, kids playing in the courtyard and running around the covered porch, etc... Trash cans were left overflowing after the party, hence my so-so rating for cleanliness. There is no onsite management, which did not bother us, but is to be noted. There is a farmers market in front of the hotel on Saturday mornings, nice to grab pastries or fresh produce for breakfast or picnic.
- Ronaleen (10/5): - We loved our stay at Kohala Village Inn. Extremely clean and very peaceful,
- Robert (8/5): - Clean property --- Lack of staff on premisses was not helpful
- Hans (8/5): - Traveled with family to the northern tip of the Big Island. Hawi is a great jumping-off spot for excursions and adventure. Kohala Village Inn filled our needs. It’s a quiet Inn, even during the busy Holiday season. We did miss the lodge though, as the hangout spots now are in the hallways, or the central atrium. Hopefully it’ll be rebuilt.
- Darrell (10/5): - The staff member who greeted us, her name is Princess, was lovely and very helpful with area sites and boutique shopping.
- Kathleen (8/5): - Good for what we needed. Right in center of small Hawi. Walk to a couple restaurants and shops. Pretty courtyard, we like to hear coqui and roosters. It was quiet when we were there but the nature of the property means you would hear any other guest noise.
- leiann (10/5): ❤️❤️❤️ - This was a wonderful, clean, eco-friendly hotel. Owners are very responsive and responded quickly to all her inquiries. It was a centralized location for us to do all the activities that we wanted to do in Hawi. I highly recommend this place if you’re in the area.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Very clean and comfortable - It was hard to find the office to check in. Actually never found the office. But once I looked at my phone, I saw codes for the rooms. Played with it a few times before we actually figured out how to use the door. Rooms were very clean, and comfortable. No complaints there. Would be nice to have a coffee pot in the lobby. Overall, pleased with stay and would come back.
- Charles (10/5): - The property was superbly well kept up. It was well decorated in quiet, good taste. It had a warmth due to its use of pine on the ceiling. It was painted in warm, inviting colors. I liked the use of photographs of people showing their individuality and kindliness. Very wholesome place overall. The proprietor has taken great pains with the place.
- Lora (10/5): Hawi retreat stay - I love staying here. It feels more old school Hawaii plantation style. They did have a nice coffee station before covid. Hope they bring that back since there is a fridge only in your room. Very clean and well taken care of property.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Quiet, clean, and vintage. Great place to stay in Hawi.
- Judy (8/5): - Very nice inn walking distance to all the restaurants in the quaint town of Hawi.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Colorful painted building, doors and interior walls. Big windows that cross ventilate each room. A small, unpretentious community place.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Our stay was just for one night while we attended a function in Hawi and it was convenient. Our room was ready and getting the key was easy using the lockbox. The room was roomy enough and had enough amenities like A/C, refrigerator, and TV.
- Julie (8/5): - Our room looked out onto a beautiful garden. There was a fridge in the room but no coffee maker. However fresh coffee was available every morning in the lobby, free of charge. S
- Maryanne H (10/5): Lovely place to stay! - Awesome! Lovely spot 😊
- Mark (4/5): Bright your own coffee/tea! "Home alone" in lobby! - Lukewarm shower, no coffee, tea, or condiments available, either in the room olobby (just hot water).
Staff not present most of the time during check-in period, hard to locate where my room was.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Quiet, clean, close to everything in town, staff helpful, homey.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Property as described on site. Basic but clean and comfortable room. Quite noisy.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was lovely and quaint. Coffe in the morning could have been a bit earlier
- Zel (6/5): - Nice room comfortable beds. Bathroom cramped. Ramp coming up to instead of steps was located by our room. Very Very noisy Just made of plywood. As people pulled there luggage up early in morning or late in the evening it was very loud Would not stay here again
- Don (4/5): - There was only one person handling font desk and cleaning, etc. Did not take out trash during our stay in the name of Feed Hawai’i non-profit community programs. Insufficient bath supply for two people staying for two nights!
- D Patton (8/5): A piece of history - The Kohala is a nice little place, nothing fancy, but with period charm. We enjoyed our one night stay, as it allowed us to experience a slice of life in this small north island community.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The Inn has an easy self check-in process. We stayed one night.
- Ruth (10/5): - Charming old Hawaiian inn. Spotlessly clean, comfy bed. A great stop!
- MD (10/5): - Simple, quiet, convenient to Hawi. Simple, Plantation cottage style amenities.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Peaceful and accommodating! I am definitely going to stay here again in the future!
- Verified traveler (4/5): - I understand the eco friendly enviroment in the area but there were so many mosquitos. :(
