Guest Reviews
- Valery (10/5): - Can’t complain it was good for the days I needed it and the close proximity to Sumec
- Betsaida (10/5): - Good attitude of employees
- Mary (8/5): - In very close proximity to park/river.
- Raul (10/5): - Beautiful hostel in the middle of the forest
- Sandra (8/5): - This hostel is rustic and located right at the entrance to the state park. The staff was very friendly. You're only choice for food is the restaurant hotel.
- Pascal (10/5): Inside the jungle with the local people - If you want to have a local experience and get to know the local indigenous people, I highly recommend El Portal. It is owned and run by people from the local community.
It is right next to the river, the caves and the pools of Semuc Champey. So from your room you can just walk down the river and have a swim, while chatting with locals.
All the staff are very friendly and are happy to help you with anything. Make sure to not confuse their silly humor with anything negative ;)
We absolutely loved our experience here, after having seen other hostels in the area.
Few things to take into consideration:
1. The restaurant is very nice. The food is not of the highest quality, but it is delicious and gets you through the day.
2. You are INSIDE the jungle. Don't be afraid of crawling things, you are in their territory. They dont hurt you.
3. The rooms can get quite hot. And there are no fans as the electricity is very limited (only available in the evenings).
All in all, the price/ quality is just perfect. And I would love to come back! Go experience the local community, not the hippie backpacker hostels.
- Ixel (8/5): - N
- Freddy (10/5): - It is close to Semuc rivers and caves … wonderful
- EDWIN (10/5): - Amazing place in Guatemala.
- Heidy (10/5): - Excelente servicio
- Marie-Soleil (8/5): - Tres belle endroit vue magnifique!
- Nicolas (2/5): A éviter !
- Verboly (8/5): - I loved the property and the staff, I did not like the fact that there’s no AC and the power is on from 6-10 pm we were in the dark in the morning and the bathroom was super dark and cold water only.
- Negar (2/5): - I was looking for a hotel in Lanquin and the title of this hotel gave the impression that it would be I. Lanquin … our tour started in Lanquin. This is in the dead of the park with no reception or places around to offer eating options etc . We would disconnect with our group and would have to take some thing like a Tuk Tuk for 20 minutes!! I tried calling or canceling right away when I saw the actual address on the booking ! But they have I reception and couldn’t connect!! So spooky! I don’t trust this place and didn’t go ! It’s deceptive a bit
- Francisco (10/5): - .
- Edgar (10/5): - It was convinient close to main attraction.
- CARLOS (8/5): - Beautiful place on the side of the river,no electricity but x the price can ask for more, plesant and enjoyable...thanks everyone ...
- Jocelyn (6/5): - The river view and excess was great. The pool was clean and amazing view. Things I didn’t love the food prices and choices. The shared shower we got was poorly taken care of with some strange smell. The staff were not helpful during check in and throughout the trip. One night our bartender took 6 shots within 20 or 30 minutes. He messed up our order and was forgetful. One thing I noticed was they would clean the floors often in the common area but not the dining tables after every guest was done eating. The bungalow was really nice I just wish they had mosquito nets since the bungalow was an open front. If you like to eat more traditional or local food for a normal price I suggest skipping their restaurant and walking up a small hill to eat at the entrance of champey. They have delicious hand made fresh tortillas and home made salsa.
- Lia (6/5): - Beautiful location, staff could be nicer.
- Mark (8/5): Phenomenal location and staff but no hot water - The location is excellent - less than a five minute walk to the entrance to Semuc Champey and less than a 10 minute walk to the cave. And the staff was outstanding - very friendly and helpful. And the pool was great.
BUT you should know that there is no hot water and only 4 hours of electricity each day - from 6-10 pm. These things are mentioned in reviews but are not readily apparent from the listing.
But we think the convenience of being so close to Semuc Champey was worth the inconveniences.
- Mayowa (10/5): - The location of the hotel is perfect than is a super nice view and the staff is very nice.
- Carmen Elena (10/5): - Personal muy amable
- Verified traveler (4/5): I wish I had downloaded films on netflix - The place has an amazing location. I don’t understand why they can’t provide electricity and wifi. You’re stuck in the middle of nowhere and are forced to go to sleep at 10pm. The staff were nice, however, and the location made the stay worthwhile.
- Laura (6/5): - The room was ok. Basic, but that’s what we signed up for. However, there is no shared kitchen but a pricy restaurant. Also pool was not clean at all. It’s an ok stay but only for max 2 nights
- Krystal (8/5): - It was an okay stay. The staff were very helpful and nice. However, make sure you know that this stay does NOT have wifi, and the cell service is almost non-existent. This is great for unplugging, but we didn't know this ahead of time.
Also, the electricity is only on for a couple hours a day. My husband sleeps with a CPAP machine, and we did not know this ahead of time.
- pablo orlando (10/5): - Very honest and friendly staff… lost our wallet, they found it… all money in it… they even shipped it to us… Checha, Sergio and Carlos were great… unforgettable experience… highly recommended… beautiful place
- Verified traveler (10/5): Very good (no wifi neither using Hotspot) - The hostel is amazing, the location, the kindness, the river view swimming pool and terrace is really unique, unfortunately they don't offer a simple Hotspot internet on demand, and this nowadays nobody likes. I mean, such a good hostel like this slip on this has to be mentioned.
- Mario (10/5): - Ok
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The perfect spa to visit semuc champey
The entrance is around the corner.
Don’t buy the tour from the hotel. You can walk to the entrance yourself and paid the entrance fee.
- farhad (8/5): - This hotel located in the best part of the beautiful Semuc. It is in walking distance from the famous Semuc pools (pozas) and also the cave tour which we highly recommend. The area is really beautiful and our room (more like cabin) had a great view of a river.
- Amanda (8/5): - The property is very cute and the bungalows were nice except we had some very loud people underneath us. The bed and pillow weren’t comfortable but the showers and bathrooms were shared but clean
- sonya (10/5): Amazing! - The whole experience was amazing and the cabins was so cute. Literally right at the entrance. The staff was so attentive. Happy hour was top notch. Will def return.
- rigoberto (10/5): Great adventure on Semuc champey - Great place, very nice staff and very good food, impressive quality of the preppie working on the hotel and what a nice adventure, my kids were thrill and will never forget this place.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent service and installations.
The whole staff are very polite and friendly.
I will come back to this place for sure
- Julien (6/5): - To go to the hotel is a nightmare by car. The view and the park is amazing but the hotel is not that great.
- Jason (10/5): - Good service staff and fabulous view from the dining room.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Prime location. Great staff, well maintained property, nice amenities.
- Robert (10/5): Disconnect yourself - The staff is great and very accommodating. They are always available and I felt they were honest when you ask them for information. The location is 5 minutes to the National Park where you hike to see Semuc Champey and another 5 min walk to see the caves. There are only two periods when there is electricity since they have to run generators. There is no wifi so this is a great place to disconnect from the world. In the evening, they make your experience fun by putting music and interacting with guests until it is time to turn off the generator. If you are driving there, be ready for a very rocky drive, I only recommend pick up trucks or SUVs.
- Yvette (10/5): Amazing Getaway! - The hotel and staff were amazing! The hotel does not have any hot water and minimum electricity (6-11pm only). Food is alright but the happy hour from 7-9pm is great since they have a 2 for the price of one drink, I'd recommend the Caipirinha drink.
The location is 2 minutes away walking distance to Semuc Champey. Very convenient if that's where you are heading.
- Brian (8/5): - No hot water but right at the entrance to the park and the food was good.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The property is beautiful and in a great location only about 300m to the entrance on Semuc Champey. Really cold showers :/
- Stuart (8/5): Gorgeous Jungle Retreat on the river - Staff happiest I’ve ever met. Reminds me of the good ole days in BALI in the 80’s. It’s remote and cold water only with limited electricity. But this is the jungle and this is how it is. Food was great. Staff even better. Location unbeatable
- Verified traveler (6/5): Cloest hotel to Semuc Champey - Nice time.Beautiful place. Only difficulty was no reimbursement. Booking was for two night stay. Stayed for one night was told Expedia keeps the money since it was pre-paid you forfeit 2nd night Hotel could not reimburse.
