Guest Reviews
- Anthony (4/5): Poor value, the attic room was drafty, small, noisy and access was via steep stairs! - Very friendly owner and staff. It was situated close to the historic Dover Castle. My attic room was incredible small and was only accessible by steep stairs. The TV didn't work properly and the picture kept pixelating. The sound kept cutting out. It was quite noisy from traffic as the single glazed window was drafty. As solo guests I'm mystified why the larger rooms are not rented out particularly for £75 B & B pppn. We were so unimpressed that we made our excuses and left a day early. The Premier Inn on the seafront was much nicer and £71 pppn but breakfast was extra.
- Betty Ann (10/5): Lovely hostess, food good, location perfect for castle visitors. There are steps to room no lifts av - Breakfast was local food and delicious Did not try blood pudding
- Catalina (10/5): Loved Dover - It was a lovely place, quaint and cozy. Nothing
- Christer (9/5): - Comfortable, clean and cosy. Classic B&B.
- Jeannette (7/5): -
- Klaus Georg (7/5): - Frühstück war hervorragend - Dover Castle in 5 Min. zu Fuß erreichbar Zimmer extrem klein!
- Marianne (9/5): - Friendly hosts, quiet and peaceful area. The room was clean and tidy, with comfortable beds. A very good breakfast was served in the morning
- Sandra (10/5): - We liked the accommodation. It was cosy, clean and comfortable. It was close to the ferry terminal so that we could walk there easily!
Sharon was a fabulous host and gave us some very good recommendations for bars.
We also enjoyed a delicious full English breakfast, cooked by Sharon.
We had a fabulous stay.
Thank you Sharon for your hospitality!
- Martina (9/5): Gastfreundlicher, zentraler Aufenthalt. - Sehr zentral, sauber, sympathisch.
- Stephen (7/5): -
- Breda (10/5): Lovely friendly staff - Splendid place. Great breakfast .Everything as shown in description lovely Nothing all good
- colin (10/5): - Perfect for my solo stay before I took the ferry to France. Everything was clean and the host was very friendly. I was able to keep my bicycle indoors in their storage room.
- Istvan (2/5): - The breakfast started at 7 am, so when I asked any packed sandwich, it was simply refused, NO!
When I discovered at around 10 pm that the window is a single glazed, very old, without any sound-thermal isolation, asked another, more quieter room, but the housekeeper said, I can leave if I do not like it. Of course without any refunding.
So it was a very unpleasant, big disappointing.
- Tracey (9/5): -
- Janusz (8/5): Great! - Host was friendly, property was good value for money, excellent location and very generous breakfast. The room did not have much space for working, but I chose a small room.
- Andrew (9/5): -

Room was very nice spotless.

Great Breakfast and a lovely big teapot which for a tea drinker like me was great.
- Pearce (10/5): Excellent guest house - Sharon was very helpful, warm & friendly.. my room was absolutely lovely.. I would definitely stay again.
- Piergiorgio (10/5): -
- Danja (10/5): Comfy with great breakfast - We felt right at home at the Castle House Guest House, the rooms were small but comfortable, wirh everything you need and the English breakfast with vegetarian/vegan options got us a great start for our long journey home. If you are looking for a cozy stay in Dover this is the place to stay at!
- R2055YFmariannel (10/5): Quiet and peaceful area - Friendly hosts, quiet and peaceful area. The room was clean and tidy, with comfortable beds. A very good breakfast was served in the morning.
- Pauline (8/5): Comfortable overnight stop en route to cruise holiday - Very good breakfast (including great coffee!) Only drawback is steep, narrow stairs, no lifts
- Scott (9/5): Superb -
- David (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely guesthouse. Sharon is always welcoming and cooks a killer breakfast. Well worth the value.,
- Barbara (7/5): It was good for one night stay. - The breakfast was excellent and the hostess was very friendly. Our room was a little cramped and hot.
- James (10/5): Perfect Stay - Perfect location, right beside Dover Castle, on a quiet street. The owner was on site and was extremely pleasant and welcoming, even ahead of my stay, communicating with me about parking. The room was cozy, small but comfortable. The included breakfast was hands-down the best English Breakfast I had during my entire two weeks in the UK. Highly recommend, will definitely stay here again Lots of stairs to get to the room, but I did know that when I made the booking, so that's on me, lol.
- Leslie (10/5): - Very comfortable room and great breakfast. Host was very accommodating. Don’t bring heavy suitcases if you are on 2nd or 3rd floor!
- Sarah (10/5): - This was such a lovely property and the caretaker was wonderful. She made such a lovely breakfast in the morning and was such a pleasure to interact with.
- Schoen (8/5): It was the second time we were here and it was as good as the first time - It was very close to the ferry which is splendid after ad day of traveling. And the breakfast was great!
- Kevin (7/5): Good -
- Louis (9/5): Charming B&B close to Dover Castle - Great location with excellent restaurants, bars and supermarkets close by. Sharon and Vaughn were wonderful hosts and breakfast each morning was made to order and delicious. I had the tiny room upstairs and just loved how cozy it was. They have a pretty little garden area outside that is a perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine at the end of a day exploring the area. I would definitely stay again.
- Lorraine (9/5): Great experience - Host was very accommodating, friendly, helpful. Excellent breakfast. Pleased with visit, great location with easy access to white cliffs and castle. Would stay again.
- Madilyn (10/5): - I had a wonderful stay - the room was cozy and perfect for the chilly nights, the hosts were lovely and recommended some great places in town to visit.
- mosesk376 (10/5): Cozy and clean, it’s a family friendly stay with some things to keep on mind. - The Castle House Guest House is homey, charming and comfortable, with a great breakfast. We were four guests in two rooms: me, my son, and my elderly parents. The stairs were a bit of a challenge for my mom and dad, as the stairways are very narrow, but the accommodations were clean and cozy.
Okay, so I rated CHGH very high because it was just what we were looking for. It’s a converted home with a wonderful home-feel, right at the base of Dover Castle. That being said, here are the things to keep in mind:
- narrow stairwells, can be tricky for lots of luggage.
- both big and small rooms, the rooms won’t be uniform in layout.
- on a hill, approach to the hotel is on castle hill so the walk is sloped.
- it’s not particularly close to the train station, may warrant a cab if walking isn’t an option.
What’s great
- It’s a lived-in space, the family that runs it is in residence
- Breakfast is delicious
- It’s a great access either to the castle in one direction or one of Dover’s main streets in the other, with restaurants and shops.
- Kimberley (8/5): Very good -
- Jon (10/5): Exceptional - Cosy room, great breakfast, great location. It's not negative to me, but the decor might not be modern enough for some people.
- Marian (9/5): Superb -
- James (5/5): Passable - Room was small but nice. The hotel arranged a taxi for us for early morning. Other hotels we stayed in arranged for us to have access to breakfast when we were departing early. No option offered to us such as a couple of items to take away with us.
- thomas (10/5): An excellent stay! - excellent location. very freiendly staff- a well cooked breakfast: who could ask for more!
- Raphaèle (8/5): Very good -
- gareth (10/5): Great little stay, recommended. - Warm and helpful welcome. Attic room is up three flights of stairs, no lift.
Location is easy to find, close by a good retail park and ten minutes walk to the seafront.
Room was very small with a small chair, but the bed was comfortable with nice bedding and everything was spotlessly clean. Windows opened fully which was nice, there was a fan provided but no air conditioning.
After a good nights sleep shower was good with shampoo and conditioner provided. Yes coffee and kettle also on hand.
Breakfast was superb and quickly served as I needed to leave early.
Overall a very comfortable stay and recommended
- Ka (10/5): Great! - Comfortable, relatively spacious for one person
Excellent breakfast by the host. Definitely worth the money! Steep stair, consider it if bringing heavy luggages
- Kateryna (8/5): Very good -
- Steven (10/5): Exceptional -
- Joanna (7/5): Good - Location to ferry crossing.
Professional host.
Tea and coffee making facilities in room. Was very hot, unable to have the window open as gulls were very noisy.
Would benefit having a fan in the room.
- Jamie (9/5): Superb - Host was lovely. Breakfast was very good. Location is ideal for anybody using the Dover ferry routes. Room was great for the price, comfy bed and nice bathroom. Very noisy seagulls all night and through the morning, struggled to sleep because of the noise. Not the hotels fault of course, but wish I'd taken some ear plugs.
- Christopher (10/5): Exceptional - The freshly cooked breakfast is amazing. Top quality ingredients. One of the best I've ever had.
- Barry (10/5): Wonderful - Great atmosphere and location
- U1257KOlindsays (10/5): Lovely stay! - I stayed in a single guest room for 2 nights prior to a cruise. The inn is cozy and charming and the owners are so lovely! The single room is small (as expected) but comfortable with adequate storage, private, and quiet - I slept like a baby. The location is perfect with the Dover Castle a short (but steep) walk away, and town center and beach/marina no more than a 10-minute walk away. The WiFi is great, and the room has everything you need. The breakfast is homemade, cooked to order, and delicious! Sharon and her husband are wonderful hosts!
- Christopher (10/5): Exceptional - Parking. Check in. Communication superb. Breakfast was amazing and cooked fresh using high quality produce. Looking forward to my return visit off the ferry next Tuesday.
- Michael (10/5): The trip exceeded our expectations. Thank you. - Ms. Sharon was very friendly. The room on the 3rd(UK)/4th(US) floor was easy to get to. The room was cozy and the sunset was spectacular, as Ms. Sharon predicted. The full English breakfast was very tasty! We absolutely enjoyed ourselves. The hotel is located near to several places to eat and a convenience store for snack and drinks. It’s very conveniently located if you want to walk around the town. I highly recommend this bed and breakfast. Parking in the area is challenging, though not in the Castle Guest House’s control. Ms. Sharon clearly explained the options available and we didn’t have a problem finding free parking after we returned from a trip to the white cliffs.
- CTownBob (10/5): A truly enjoyable experience! - When traveling it is often easy to pass over local establishments for the larger chain hotels.
While you may feel comfort in expected amenities, you miss however the charm, comfort and historical value of local accommodations.
Such is the case with the Castle Hill Guest House in Dover. The room was comfortable, our hostess warm and accommodating, the location central and the morning offering a true English breakfast.
We definitely recommend a stay at the Castle Hill Guest House when in Dover.
- Leocadia (10/5): Great place - Excellent location just below Dover Castle. But best of all was the calm graciousness of our hostess. Breakfast was magnificent
- Sydney (10/5): Exceptional - Breakfast was outstanding! The room was small but great for one person. Loved the location.
- Paul (8/5): Very good - Excellent breakfast and friendly host.
- Oscar (10/5): Exceptional -
- Glen (10/5): Wonderful hosts. Would definitely stay there again - Wonderful hosts, great breakfast, and convenient location to castle and ferry.
- Huw (8/5): Pre ferry stay. - Close to the town centre and very handy for the ferry terminal. My attic room was compact but very clean with tea making facilities, a tv and ensuite with good electric shower, comfortable bed. Stairs are quite narrow so may not suit people with mobility issues. Overnight Parking on the street nearby. Situated on the road to the castle so a busy road with associated noise and a fast road, care to be taken.
- Olga (8/5): Very good -
- Nafty (7/5): Good -
- Denis (10/5): Exceptional -
- James (8/5): Brilliant for an overnight to 'do' the castle etc. - Fantastic cooked breakfast included. Wonderful location for Dover Castle or walking to town. Great value for money. Very helpful staff. it's a Georgian building with a narrow staircase which is tricky if elderly or with mobility problems, like me.
- Richard (9/5): Superb -
- Silvia (9/5): Superb - The breakfast was delicious! The room was very nice, large and clean. Great location, very close to the castle!
- Brian (10/5): - The staff was wonderful! Our room was quaint and cozy. The breakfast was great. We hope to visit again soon!
- Frances (8/5): Great place for a weekend trip - A very convenient location. Super comfortable bed and great breakfast. Also I really appreciated how kind and helpful they were in allowing me to check in early and to leave my bag after check out so that I could explore until it was time to catch the train. I had an attic room so there wasn't much space in the room or ensuite. But everything I needed was available in the compact space.
- Jamie (9/5): Superb -
- James_clough (9/5): Lovely guesthouse, very central within a few minutes walk of the seafront. - Great location, lovely breakfast. This was my second visit here. This time I was in a single room on the second floor. Television and or the remote control were a bit temperamental and changing channels was difficult.
- Tib (9/5): A clean quiet relaxed stay, a great breakfast and welcoming friendly hosts. Couldn't wish for more! - Clean and quiet. Great breakfast and a friendly service. For visiting Dover, the guest houses is perfectly located, close to the Dover Castle and the White Cliffs walks and also close to shops and good pubs and restaurants. Thumbs up also for storing safely our push bikes overnight. Thank you!
- James_clough (8/5): Comfortable stay in a good location - Great location near the centre of town. My attic room was quite small but I was expecting that to be the case. The bed was very comfortable and I had a good night's sleep. Breakfast was very tasty.
- Victoria (9/5): Superb - Lovely, traditional guest house in a nice part of the town. Great value, would stay again if in Dover.
- Maggie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Twamoghna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Adam (9/5): Well worth considering! - Breakfast was great, owner was friendly and welcoming, property was easy to find and well-situated. To be recommended. A little noisy, and too many pillows!
- William (7/5): Good - 3 flights up narrow stairs is hard.
- Paul (9/5): Superb -
- Denise (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hilary (8/5): Convenient for what we wanted and satisfactory - Excellent breakfast, just how we both liked it. Very friendly people. Facilities in the room were fine. We were up in the eaves and the stairs were dangerously narrow in places - perhaps not too suitable for older women like ourselves. Beds were situated under the eaves too so we had to be careful not to sit up and bang our heads.
- Frome (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ria (8/5): Very good - Very kind host
- Jeffrey (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marcia (8/5): Very good -
- Tim (9/5): Great location to visit Dover Castle. - Staff were great and the location was perfect. White Horse Pub around the corner was outstanding. Oldest Pub in Dover. Breakfast was very well done
- Rich (10/5): Wonderful place to stay. - Location was great as down the road from Dover Castle. The breakfast was gorgeous and the host was so nice and helpful. We only stayed one night.
- Jason (10/5): Exceptional - We both had the full English breakfast. The host was wonderful and made a great breakfast in a nice, cozy dining room. The coffee was served in a french press which was a great surprise for Americans traveling in England.
- Nick (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rajashekar (9/5): Superb -
- Hope (10/5): - Great hospitality made room for bikes !!
- Lindy (4/5): - Not very welcome the bed was like sleeping on bricks and told to leave by 10am even though we were the only guests there. But the breakfast was fantastic
- Kim (9/5): Great stay in great town - Great location, Great breakfast, Nice touch in the coffee centre in room
