Guest Reviews
- LeBon (10/5): Lovely guesthouse in a quiet convenient location. - Hosts are wonderful! We enjoyed our conversation with them. Our room was clean and cozy with a.little private garden outside our room. Absolutely loved the location with easy walk to shopping, restaurants and shrines. Subway is right around the corner. Guesthouse had everything we needed and we would certainly return. I have already recommended the inn to friends. Futon mattress was a little more firm than what we are used to but the linens were clean, soft and cozy.
- Brett (9/5): We had a wonderful stay and the hosts very so lovely and helped with all -
- Alex (10/5): Great place to stay to enjoy this amazing city - Perfect location, quiet but close to everything. Very friendly, helpful, welcoming hosts. Beautiful clean,. comfortable rooms. We loved it!
- Estrella (10/5): - Very welcoming and helpful hosts! Super location in a quieter area but still close to main attractions.
- Kaisa (10/5): Exceptional - Exellent location. Very clean and cosy, friendly owners.
- Marlène (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice inn, run by a caring and helpful couple. The place is charming, well-equipped, in a very pleasant neighborhood with everything you need (subway, restaurants, shops, etc.). Perfect. Nothing
- Jane (10/5): A lovely stay in a calm, clean & friendly place - The location was very central. Taka & Yuka were so kind and so helpful. Their places is so clean & calm. Great facilities for cooking and eating, should you wish, fridge too! Thank you 🙏🏻 Nothing at all
- Marinda (10/5): Exceptional - We had a wonderfull stay. The facilities are perfect we loved the charm of the old japanese home. The host was so warm, kind and helpfull we had some questions and needes help with booking a taxi to the station and she helpt us wonderfully. The only thing we regret is not staying longer.
- Mark (8/5): Great spot to base Kyoto visit, very cute alley - Great location, lovely hosts
- Alex (10/5): Perfect - Cosy, tidy and the owners are so lovely! It’s in a great location..close to train station, shops, nishiki market etc…
They even gave us a hand drawn map of the places to eat in the area. Overall we absolutely loved our stay here and would love to come back in the future
- Courtney (10/5): Our favourite place to stay! - This was the best accomodation we stayed at on our whole trip through Japan! Taka and Yuka are so kind, helpful and the best hosts! The whole building has a traditional charm, and we instantly felt comfortable and at home. The room is simple but lovely, and we enjoyed the traditional experience of sleeping on the floor which was also very comfortable. The bathroom was very clean and the shower was the best we’ve ever had. There are also all the amenities you need - a cozy communal lounge/dining space where you can enjoy a cup of tea or make a simple meal for yourself (although you probably won’t need to cook as there are so many affordable and delicious food options around). Highly recommend!
Thank you Taka and Yuka for a wonderful stay - we hope to be back soon :) Nothing!
- Lukas (10/5): Exceptional - Our stay at Taka and Yuka's home was wonderful. The room was extremely comfortable, and we slept very well. Everything was spotless, and the traditional Japanese house created a cozy and welcoming atmosphere.
They provided great recommendations for things to do in the area, many of which we tried and really enjoyed.
We would definitely stay again!
Thank you for everything! It could Not have been better
- Tristan (10/5): It was an incredible stay and the host were incredible - Everything was perfect ! RAS
- Xiwei (8/5): Very good -
- Ben (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely Japanese style guesthouse. You stay in a traditional style room with a newly renovated bathroom. The owners are lovely people who made us feel really welcome. It is located in an arcade with little restaurants and convenience stores close by. You can even rent bikes but be careful in the Japanese summer heat!
- Robert (10/5): Exceptional - This is a wonderful little inn at a great location in Kyoto. Our room was very comfortable and spotlessly clean, and the owners, Taka and Yuka, were very friendly and kind. We have enjoyed our stay very much and wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else in Kyoto.
- Duncan (10/5): Exceptional - The location is great! You can walk to a lot of the landmarks or take the subway next to it, yet it’s located in a non-busy area so you don’t have to deal with the crowds. The owners are amazing and super friendly. They are very welcoming! We will definitely come back.
- Mark (10/5): Greta stay. One of the best in our trip to Japan - Hidden in a lane way next to the subway station, this place is a real gem. It is a short subway trip from Kyoto station so easy to access. We had a downstairs room which has its own private garden which was very nice. The room is traditional Japanese room and has everything you need. Not heaps of room so don’t bring your big suitcases 😀. Yuka was our host and she was amazing. Very friendly and super helpful. She speaks very good English. So I would absolutely recommend this place if you are looking for somewhere to stay in Kyoto. Nothing
- Kate (10/5): Exceptional -
- Eunice (10/5): Quiet & Charming traditional Inn, but Central Stay in Kyoto - Super helpful host and English is very good! He gave us all good bakery and food recos! Our room has little garden, automatic toilet and shower with complete amenities (shower gel, fresh towels, shampoo, warm water). The floor mattresses are comfortable! It is tatami room so it feels so traditonal! The location is central, walking distance to Yasaka Shrine (less 10min) and Kiyomizu Dera where we rented Kimono from, can take the bus to Gion. We found a nearby hidden gem which is the Gyobashi bridge by shirakawa river. None
- Benjamin (10/5): Exceptional - There is a really wonderful couple that runs the inn and they are super welcoming and happy to help make your trip better with suggestions. Everything is very clean and staying here is like being in a traditional Japanese house but with a modern Japanese bathroom adjoined to each room. Lovely little garden and traditional style common living dining kitchen area. I'll definitely stay here the best time I'm in Kyoto!
- Harmsworth (10/5): An awesome local authentic experience - The hosts were amazing Nothing.
- Li (9/5): Superb -
- Emma-lee (10/5): Couldn’t have asked for better. Great base to explore Gion and lovely hosts. -
- Juno (10/5): Charming place at a perfect location - The architecture is beautiful and clean. The location is fabulous: it’s quiet even though it’s on a shopping arcade. The street comprises of residences, local shops open from 10am to I think 6 or 7pm, and a couple other inns without feeling touristy. It’s not at all like the overly tourist places near Kiyomizu temple. The street is a small pedestrian street and the main thoroughfare is very accessible by bus and subway. The mochi place around the corner on the other side of the canal is amazing!!!! The garden is private and so you can keep the screens open and wake up to sunrise. The futons are super comfortable and I slept deeply every night I’m grateful I came to Kyoto with just a tote bag and a backpack and had my suitcase shipped to our next location. My spouse brought his carry on suitcase and a backpack and he was very careful to not roll it onto the super clean tatami. The room is small and so don’t expect to be able to explode out! The house is more than a century old. Also, I think the bathroom could use
hooks or a second towel bar to the left of the sink.
- Madeleine (10/5): Exceptional - spacious, newly renovated Ryoken style accommodation in a great location with an excellent host (with great English!)
- Julian (10/5): Exceptional - Absolutely charming! Taka and Yuka's cozy guesthouse is a tranquil haven. The Japanese-style rooms exude warmth and authenticity, offering a serene retreat. The attention to detail is remarkable, from the traditional décor to the impeccable service. Staying here feels like a genuine immersion into Japanese hospitality. Highly recommended for an unforgettable and delightful experience
- Chloe (10/5): The best place to stay in Kyoto! - Everything. The room is so comfortable, especially with the en-suite bathroom that is brand new. Taka & Yuka are so kind and friendly and helpful. The location is excellent, in a cute little street with bars and restaurants and close to the main areas. We could only stay 2 nights but would have loved to stay longer! Nothing!
- Eloise (9/5): Beautiful stay, 100% recommended - We loved this stay, absolutely the best of our trip. The owners were so generous and understanding, and there were only a few other guests so no noisy disruptions ! The bikes were fantastic especially for exploring Kyoto and giving our feet a break from walking. Perfect location, perfect hosts, perfect facilities and spaces, perfect privacy ~(˘▾˘~)
Absolutely will return when we're back in Tokyo ! The only issue would be the stairs - they're fairly steep - but it's miniscule in comparison to everything being homey and comfy. Some doorways can be kind of low too so be aware if you're about 170cm and taller ! :D
- Kirsten (10/5): A true gem! - Extremely cosy place and wonderful helpful and interested owners. Great location too, close to subway and close to beautiful surroundings. Amazing bathroom facilities, and the room is just Japanese fairytale, with the little private garden and all. In many ryokans the futon beds are very thin, but here the futon has got extra cushioning so the futons are nice and soft. Overall, my son and I had a wonderful stay! Thank you Taka and Yuka!! That I had to leave ;-)
- Sebastian (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice and authentic accommodation run by a lovely Japanese couple. We really enjoyed it and definitely recommend it for an authentic stay in Kyoto
- Syed (9/5): Great Japanese style living experience at a clean and friendly place. - Very friendly couple running the Inn. They were very helpful. Very clean room. Close to the station.
- Dianela (10/5): Everything about this place is top notch! - The place was indeed in a strategic location. It is in the heart of Gion, near to heritage sites, markets and public transit. The customer service is top notch and I will definitely go back here if I am going to visit Kyoto once more. Thank you, Taka and Yuka for making our first trip to Japan a very wonderful and unforgettable experience. Can't also miss to thank you for those surprise coffee treats!
- Tony (10/5): Exceptional - The warm and friendly hosts were so kind and hospitable and the guest house was a fantastic experience.
- David (10/5): Gotta love it! - We loved everything about Oki's Inn -- a lovely 100+ year-old guesthouse with a mix of traditional accommodations and excellent modern bathroom facilities. Perfect! The A/C is so quiet, you don't even know it's running. The sweet smell of the woods when first entering Oki's Inn is a very pleasant surprise - a sensory experience! Taka, Yuka and young Lisa are lovely hosts. Taka and Yuka took our travel-bags up and down the stairs upon our arrival and departure without our asking. This place is very quiet, so it is not a place for partying and playing loud music. Please note that this is a professional rock&blues guitar player writing this review. The walking-street atmosphere is a treat with several convenient places to dine at. There is a 24 hour neighbourhood super-market and convenience store just around the corner. If you want peace, serenity and a sense of well-being at a traditional Japanese family-run home-base as you venture out to explore Kyoto, look no further. As I like to say when I'm totally pleased, "Gotta love it". dcb I am a little out of shape and overweight, so when negotiating the 10-step stairs to and from the upper floor, I didn't like the shape I let myself get into during the pandemic. I will be better the next time when we return to this wonderful place. I promise myself.
- Julie (10/5): We loved our stay - Wonderful place, incredibly kind and friendly staff, perfect location in a quiet street next to the subway station. We rented the bikes for a day which was a great idea! -
- Patrick (10/5): Exceptional -
- Julia (10/5): Fabulous - A fabulous traditional timber house with newly built guest rooms and bathrooms. An oasis of calm in the hustle and bustle of Kyoto.
The hosts were delightful and gave us great recommendations for cafes etc nearby.
The stay at Oki's Inn was definitely a highlight of our trip to Japan.
- Jessica (8/5): Unique Kyoto traditional stay experience - - Interesting experience to try out traditional Kyoto stay. Hosts are super friendly and helpful.
- There are nice shared kitchen and eating area which you can hang out at.
- Good location with restaurants nearby. - Washroom is very new and clean but the floor is too cold (we went during spring/summer time). Can't imagine for those who travel during autumn/winter 😅It's probably due to the tile's material.
- Heidi (10/5): Exceptional - The owners are so kind and the place itself is very cute and traditional. The newer bathrooms are wonderful and large. The location was fantastic, nestled close to many temples and gardens, a relaxing river walk, and right by the subway.
- Sally (10/5): Loved our stay at Oki's inn, we hope to be back one day for a longer stay! - We loved this inn, located in a very nice neighbourhood, easily accessible to everywhere. Taka and Yuka were so friendly, generous and helpful and the accommodation was perfect with lots of thoughtful touches. The room and bathroom were nice and big, which is a welcome change from many of the places we've stayed in Japan. We hope to be back one day, can't recommend Oki's Inn enough!
- Mich (10/5): Amazing, beautiful, unique and unforgettable stay in historic Kyoto! - An absolute must to book for your stay in Kyoto! This place is absolutely amazing from start to finish. First, the home is a historical piece of beauty from the Taisho period which the owners definitely take great pride in caring for the house and making it beautiful without sacrificing the history of it. I am in love with the shared kitchen and eating area and we enjoyed relaxing there and having our meals. You will definitely feel so relaxed just listening to the silence and staring out into the zen garden. The husband and wife are super friendly and helpful and can speak good english and treated us warmly. Our room was clean and warm with our futons already ready for us and the bathroom looks to be newly renovated with a very nice style and all amenities working fine. The location is amazing too as it's right beside the metro station, in a unique shopping street and not too far walking distance from temples and shops. Truly a local gem that needs a lot of love and we enjoyed every minute of our stay here! If we come to Kyoto again this will be our first place to look to stay in!
- Akshay (10/5): Excellent location, and super value for money - Excellent location, close to most tourist attractions and well connected. The room is spacious, and the ground floor has a small attached garden space. You can bring your food in the dinner area and eat on the tatami mat. Yuka (the owner) is very helpful, and gave us a hand printed map as well. Highly recommended.
- Thomas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Eduardo (10/5): Exceptional -
- コルニュファニー (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (10/5): Excellent - Everything was so nice here. Yuka and Taka provided the best services for us. Definitely gonna stay here if come to Kyoto again.
- Alysia (10/5): Best place we have stayed - Beautiful location, room, hosts, communal facilities... best place we have ever stayed 😍 Nothing!
- Nadine (10/5): Exceptional room, facilities, location and hosts! - Extremely friendly and helpful hosts, super clean, comfortable and quiet room with private facilities and garden, great facilities, plus great location.
- Edward (10/5): Exceptional - Taka was extremely friendly, helped us book meals and made recommendations for local places.
Japanese style futon beds were very comfortable and cozy. Private bathrooms were large and modern, particularly for a guesthouse/machiya-style accomodation.
Short walk from Gion and right next to a metro station.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend.
- Siobhan (10/5): Charming and comfortable - We loved this place - all the old dark wood and so much helpful hospitality and a great map of the local area! We enjoyed a delightful few days exploring Kyoto on our honeymoon and would definitely recommend this accommodation, especially if you’re keen for a private bathroom.
- Katarzyna (10/5): Perfect stay in Kyoto - I absolutely loved my stay at Oki’s Inn. Futons were incredibly comfortable (although I like hard mattresses), room was nicely decorated, bathroom was very new and clean, common areas were lovely and owners were the nicest people ever with very good English. Location is excellent- quiet and peaceful, and a short walk away from major tourist attractions and metro. I will definitely be back one day :) I loved everything but it’s worth noting that walls are thin so you have to be respectful of your neighbours and talk quietly. I slept like a baby and usually have a problem with noise - but you may take ear plugs just in case. Also, we went there in nice hot weather- I guess it can get bit cold in winter although there is a heating/AC unit in the room - I’m just not a big fan of AC. But for me this stay was 10 out of 10, and I hope to be back one day.
- Adam (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rr (9/5): The perfect Kyoto experience! - Loved how a traditional Japanese house is packed with modern amenities to make for a comfortable stay!
- wonderful hosts, a very warm and thoughtful couple
- super comfortable bedding
- private bathroom & toilet (newly built)
- excellent location in the beautiful & well-connected neighbourhood of Higashiyama.
- many restaurants, laundry, convenient stores, etc nearby nothing - it’s perfect
- Morgane (10/5): A hidden gem that provide the experience of a traditional Japanese experience. - The place was very clean and quiet - the room was really cute, recently renovated and well designed (such as a small heater added in the bathroom to keep you warm when you step out of the shower). The common area is really comfortable and charming - lovely to get a cup of tea after a long day of visit. The staff was absolutely marvellous: helpful with good tips on what to visit and where to eat. Cheap and easy rent of the bicycle available. The location is perfect, 2 min away from the metro and very close to all sightseeing areas: either by walk or bicycle Nothing - all was brilliant
- Anonymous (10/5): Amazing place with helpful and nice owners, comfortable and beautiful, great location. - Oki’s Inn was a perfect place stay in Kyoto. The people are very nice and welcoming, the room and building were beautiful and renovated with good taste, the bed was very comfortable, and there’s wifi and the basic amenities one would need. The common area was also very comfortable and inviting. Easy access via subway and bus and great location for sightseeing. Overall the atmosphere was amazing and I hope to come back one day!
- Rob (9/5): Superb -
- Sonata (10/5): Exceptional -
- Adrian (10/5): Greates experience we had so far! - Everything was clean, the atmosphere was typical Kyoto style and just amazing. One of the best places I ever stayed at. we even got a gift as a goodbye. We loved it!
